Women business leaders honored

Overton, a shareholder at Greenberg Traurig LLP, received the honor at the magazine's annual Who's Who in Business luncheon at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix.

Overton told the crowd of about 800 that she's often asked how she juggles everything - a high-profile job, three children and her community commitments.

"You do the best you can do and keep a positive attitude," said Overton, one of the founders of Fresh Start Women's Foundation.

The magazine also honored Hope Ozer, publisher of the CITYSunTimes in Paradise Valley, with the Golden Heart of Business award. This award celebrates a woman who gives back to the community and nurtures and develops relationships with her employees and customers.

For two decades, Ozer has worked with Valley Youth Theatre, helping to bring it from a $13,000-budget operation to one with a $1.5 million budget, a myriad of awards and star-studded alumni. more

This week, Jean-Francois Veilleux talks about cash flow problems and learning to export his cranberry products to overseas markets.

---

Mere months into launching his business, Jean-Francois Veilleux had a problem: cash flow. There wasn't enough to facilitate his vision of growing his company, Nutra-Fruit Inc.

The Nutra-Fruit products he had developed -- cranberry-based condiments including salad dressings, con-fits, coulis, salsa, chutneys, ice cider jellies, vinegars, teas and mustards -- were selling only seasonally, largely as gifts. more

Resolved Question: Regarding Adoption, how would you classify yourself?

Because the opinion demographics of this section seem to be particularly one-sided, at least based on what I've seen. Very simple question: when it comes to the topic of adoption how would you classify yourself? An Adoption Advocate? Anti-Adoption? Experienced Adoptee? Anti-International Adoption only? Fence-Sitter? :) "Open-minded" Advocate? "It's peoples own business" Advocate? Or come up with something on your own...perhaps you agree with me that such labels might be a little too simplistic and that there's truth in lots of classifications? You don't have to give a lengthy reason why, just what would you classify yourself concerning the topic of adoption. Very simple. Only doing this because I want to get a feel for how the users here see themselves. Thanx :)Allanas - it's whatever you want to call it :)LinnyG - I realize the answers often speak for themselves, but thank you for humoring me anyways :)Dorian - fantastic answer, thanks! Glad to see that most people who have answered so far realize that there's more to it than a left side and a right...there's a mighty big "in-between" that we often overlook! more

Resolved Question: Which oil companies is it okay to accept funding from?

In another question I linked to a site (www.co2science.org) which listed various studies on the Medieval Warm Period. I was criticised for this choice of site as it has accepted funding from Exxon (which i already knew, having checked Sourcewatch). From what I can gather, the criticism is that any organisation which accepts funding from a big oil company is, by that very fact, dubious. Now, I'm not sure that's particularly true (it may just be that the company feels that the organisation's efforts or research is likely to coincide with its own) but if that's the case, then what about the research from the Climate Research Unit and the Tyndall Centre who as we now know have approached Shell for funding, as the email below shows: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ""SHELL INTERNATIONAL Mick Kelly and Aeree Kim (CRU, ENV) met with Robert Kleiburg (Shell International’s climate change team) on July 4th primarily to discuss access to Shell information as part of Aeree’s PhD study (our initiative) and broader collaboration through postgrad. student project placements (their initiative), but Robert was also interested in plans for the Tyndall Centre (TC). What ensued was necessarily a rather speculative discussion with the following points emerging. Shell International would give serious consideration to what I referred to in the meeting as a ‘strategic partnership’ with the TC, broadly equivalent to a ‘flagship alliance’ in the TC proposal. A strategic partnership would involve not only the provision of funding but some (limited but genuine) role in setting the research agenda etc. Shell’s interest is not in basic science. Any work they support must have a clear and immediate relevance to ‘real-world’ activities. They are particularly interested in emissions trading and CDM. Robert seemed to be more interested in supporting overseas (developing world) than home/EU studentships, presumably because of the credit abroad and their involvement in CDM. (It is just possible this impression was partially due to the focus on Aeree’s work in the overall discussion but I doubt it.) It seems likely that any support for studentships would be on a case by case basis according to the particular project in question. Finally, we agreed that we would propose a topic to this year’s MSc intake as a placement with Shell and see if any student expressed interest. If this comes off we can run it under the TC banner if it would help. I would suggest that Robert and his boss are invited to the TC launch at the very least (assuming it will be an invite type affair). Question is how can we and who should take this a step further. Maybe a meeting at Shell with business liaison person, Mike H if time and myself if time? I’d like to/am happy to stay involved through the next stage but then will probably have to back off. We didn’t cover the new renewable energy foundation. Mick Kelly 11 September 2000"" uea-tyndall-shell-memo.doc ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What "role in setting the research agenda" did Shell get, and why is it not a problem that the Tyndall Centre accepts money from Shell, BP and other oil companies, and lets them shape the "research agenda" but when a website accepts a donation from an oil company, then any study it so much as refers to is suspect? Double standards? .EDIT - @ Don't Panic. You wrote: ""It's a question of the driving force behind the research. Who wants the research to be done and for what purpose. "" ~ So it's okay for the CRU to take money from those nice people at Shell because their intentions are pure? (Like justifying emissions trading, eh?) The driving force behind my question? I want to understand why some people feel its fine for big oil companies to have a role in shaping the research agenda (when it's clear that their only motivation is making money from emissions trading) when the research agrees with what they believe. But when the an oil company funds research or a site that says stuff they disagree with, all of sudden that connection means we can't believe any of it. .---------------------------------------------------- EDIT @ Dawei Good point. I should of included a link to a cached copy of the (now deleted) CRU History page at the University of East Anglia. http://66.102.9.132/search?q=cache:http://www.cru.uea.ac.uk/cru/about/history/ As you will see, Shell, BP - and Greenpeace - are listed amongst their sources of funding (scroll to bottom of page for list). . more

Voting Question: Summarize This Please!?

Soda fountains contained fecal bacteria, study found By Madison Park, CNN STORY HIGHLIGHTS * In university study, 90 samples were taken in a 22-mile radius of Roanoke, Virginia * 48 percent of beverages from soda fountains had possibly fecal coliform bacteria * Some of the soda from beverage machines tested below U.S. water drinking standards * Only one outbreak linked to soda fountain in a 1999 incident in U.S. Army base RELATED TOPICS * Contagious and Infectious Diseases * Health and Fitness * Consumer Protection (CNN) -- It fizzes. It quenches. And it could also contain fecal bacteria. Nearly half of the 90 beverages from soda fountain machines in one area in Virginia tested positive for coliform bacteria -- which could indicate possible fecal contamination, according to a study published in the January issue of International Journal of Food Microbiology. Researchers also detected antibiotic-resistant microbes and E.coli in the soda samples. "Certainly we come in contact with bacteria all the time," Renee Godard, lead author of the study and professor of biology and environmental studies at Hollins University, a private liberal arts college in Roanoke, Virginia. "It's simply that some bacteria may potentially cause some disease or gastrointestinal distress. One thing we hesitate with is that people get afraid of bacteria. Many of them are benign or helpful, but certainly, I don't want E.coli in my beverage." The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's drinking-water regulations require that all samples test negative for E.coli. Many of the soda beverages from the dispensers fell below U.S. drinking-water standards, according to the findings. "The large number of beverages and soda fountain machines containing E. coli is still of considerable concern... and suggests that more pathogenic strains of bacteria could persist and thrive in soda fountain machines if introduced," the authors wrote. Godard and her colleagues acquired 90 beverages of three types, (sugar soda, diet soda, water) from 30 fast food restaurants in a 22-mile area near Roanoke, in southern Virginia. They surveyed beverages from both self-service and employee-dispensed machines and the samples were tested. There were no reported outbreaks of food-borne illness related in the Roanoke area at the time of the study. They found that 48 percent of beverages obtained from soda fountains contained coliform bacteria, 11 percent contained E. coli (which are mostly harmless, but some can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia), and 17 percent had Chryseobacterium meningosepticum (which could sicken newborns or adults with weakened immune systems). Dean Cliver, professor of food safety emeritus at University of California Davis, said it would be premature to draw broad conclusions about all soda fountains from a localized study. "How sanitation regulations are promulgated and enforced in a community are different," Cliver said. "Some communities are more on to it than others. How much of a threat it represents? It's probably limited. Once again, it's a matter of what regulations are in place, who pays attention and whether it's being followed." The samples were contained in petri dishes and the bacteria multiplied within 48 hours, so much so that they became visible to the naked eye as 300 to 400 tiny dots, Godard said. A Hollins undergraduate microbiology student accidentally discovered that water from a restaurant beverage dispenser contained bacteria while completing a homework assignment. When the results came back, this piqued the interest of faculty and students. The researchers are uncertain how the bacteria got inside the beverage machines. "It could be from dispensing with a hand that wasn't clean or using wet rags to wipe down the machine," Godard said. "We haven't done the work to really identify those potential sources and how these bacteria get established." Manitowoc Foodservice, one of the leading manufacturers of ice and beverage equipment, did not have the opportunity to review the study, but released this statement in response to CNN.com's questions: "We emphasize in our product support material proper methods for and the importance of frequent, thorough cleaning and sanitizing of foodservice equipment. In food equipment as in any environment where microorganisms can occur naturally or be spread by contact, it is essential to follow proven steps for cleaning and sanitizing." The National Restaurant Association, a business association for the restaurant industry, e-mailed this statement in response to the findings: "While the results of this study are disconcerting, we feel that it isn't representative of our industry and that our guests can safely enjoy beverages from dispensers and single-serve containers alike." The American Beverage Association made this statement: "Fountain beverages are safe. more

Resolved Question: statement of purpose, please help me with it, i welcome any change, thank you!?

As an international Chinese student in the United States, I believe that I have a great deal of business, academic, social, and cultural experience that will allow me to fit in well and contribute to the international flavor of Lund University. One of my most distinguishing characteristics is the diversity of experiences I possess. I am a business student with a flair for the arts. I am a woman with technical aptitude and an interest in entreprenership. I also have a passion for traveling and understanding different cultures of the world. All these elements have given me a very broad outlook, with varying degrees of knowledge in a range of topics. I strongly believe that although some are not related directly, all these qualities will influence my graduate work. My Business degree has given a strong foundation to my analytical skills since business issues research involves a lot of complex and intricate relationships among parties who are aiming at different goals, and the application of basic math, communication and psychology skills. Over the past four years in college, I have been working part-time with my own business, Shining SIM Card, set up when I just became a college student. I was the president of student government and am also an active member with SSE - Siemens Solar Energy. I have assisted my father in his project to supervise and monitor the process in his company during my breaks. More than what I have studied in school and college, it has been these experiences that have shaped the person that I am today. I believe that this unique blend of experiences has made me a woman with an original point of view. This blend has given me a broader perspective to and a good understanding of life and a goal to aim for. Among other things, I have this diversity of experience to offer Lund University. My most substantial accomplishment has been the success of Shining SIM Card that I managed in Dalian, China, where I have been working as a manager since 2005. Entreprenership, as a field, had always fascinated me right from my middle school days, and being an entrepreneur to contribute its utilities to mankind is the life long dream and career objective I persue, it is worthy to devote energy and commitment to found my own business and lead it success. Shining SIM Card, my first big step on my enterprise career, compared with prior experience, grew up from only one employee to fifteen, the main consumers from one campus were enlarged to other 6 big universities and also some small schools of the local city when I graduated. Most of my customers were college students, as a student myself, it was easy for me to do surveies, to know the popular tastes, and the most impressing way to promote the business with very limited resources. The advertisement form developped from hand writing poster on wall to big colorful advertisement scroll and products propaganda for freshmen annually. The goal for advertisement is let 60% of the students consider my products first when they are about to purchase, and let them to introduce us to the rest 40%. Also I had an online sale shop for the convenience of customers, which has been in operation for 5 years. Run my own business required me to believe in myself and in what I thought was good for the company. I had to take a pro-active approach, take the initiative and play a leadership role in motivating people and executing events to completion. A good manager is one who can figure out where problem lies and may happen, deal with it effectively by involving all the members of the company and improve the overall culture of the company. The problems I saw at Shining SIM Card had to be resolved to sustain the company. The fact that I was able to pull off this task alone has boosted my confidence in my abilities. The business climate has never been more friendly toward entrepreneurship than it is today. However, enterprise and creativity alone are rarely sufficient to bring an entrepreneur's ideas to fruition. Though, venturing off into Entrepreneurship is a challenge, one which I think some formal education can help solidify and provide a stronger foundation for success. So that leads me to my application for an entreprenership program at Lund University, and I wish to develop an idea based on research from Lund University, during the master year. more

Resolved Question: Would you help me to correct my ENGLISH essay?

Would you help me to correct my ENGLISH essay in the respects of grammar, the accuracy of vocabulary, coherence, logistic and so on? The topic is: With the increasing globalization in business and trade, long-distance air transportation is often used to export types of fruit and vegetables to other countries where those plants cannot grow or are out of season. Some people think it is a positive development while others consider this use of air transport unjustified. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. No less than 250 words My essay is: International trade is growing at a startling pace, and has increasingly impacted the business of agricultural products. For example, thanks to the new technology like long-distance air transportation, people living in China now can enjoy the same delicious fruits and vegetables as their American counterpart do. While in terms of whether it is appropriate to use air transport in this way, is still open for debate. Some people believe that using airplane to import farm products is justified. The fruits and vegetables from abroad can significantly enrich the local markets. In other words, new kinds of vegetables and fruit appear to arouse the curiosities of local inhabitants, which are able to stimulate people to consume healthier foods, such as these plants being rich in Vitamin C, rather than meat which can result in heart diseases. Better yet, imported foods could be more valuable than indigenous ones. Empirical evidences abound in this respect that some foreign fruits contain special nutritious substances which can contribute to curve some diseases caused by eating habits. So although the air freight may extravagant, considering it is the only way to avoid the plants deteriorating, transporting foods by air is reasonable. Some people, on the other hand, think that freighting fruit and vegetables by air to countries where those plants cannot be produced or are out of season is kind of waste and can lead to severe pollution. Admittedly, in some cases plants are imported just because their strange shapes or smells while without a serious consideration not only of the huge cost of air transport, but also of the risk of exhausting resources and air pollution. However, in view of this, the authority, should involve in balancing the potential negative impact of purchasing plants from other areas via airplane and implement special and feasible measurements to overtaking these drawbacks, rather than simply banning the importing of plants by air. In conclusion, the advantages brought by air transportation for fruits and vegetables far more likely remarkably outweigh their disadvantages, and importing plants by air freight is a positive development. more

Hello, in my world culture unit in school we are doing a project on how each race has unique talents which make them a valuable demographic to a larger unified world. I chose to convey this doctrine by showing a variety of different ethnic groups with specific examples and what they excel at. So far my project incorporates Michael Phelps(Caucasian-USA) as the best swimmer and proven greatest athlete of the world of all time, Hussein Bolt(n^e^g^r^o-Jamaica) as the up and coming short distance superstar and arguably the second greatest athlete of all time, Yao Ming(Han Chinese-China) as one of the most dynamic modern basketball players in the National Basketball Association, George St. Pierre(Caucasian-Canada) and Anderson Silva(n^e^g^r^o-Brazil) as the single two greatest mixed martial artists to grace the sport (I'm not talking about theatrical spectacle such as Jacky Chan or Bruce Lee, rather actual proficiency in the sport of MMA), Mark Spitz(Caucney Jew-USA) as the second greatest swimmer of all time after Michael Phelps, and a plethora of less notable examples from a variety of different ethnicities. What I have noticed is that Muslim people haven't achieved anything at all in the realm of sports, and I am trying to understand the reasoning behind this. I know ultra orthodox muslims do not partake in a lot of sports because it conflicts with their extremist beliefs, especially the women who can't really wear any sort of athletic uniform without being beaten in the streets by their "owners". But I go to school with a lot of Muslims, and they really aren't good at anything pertaining to athletics; I am on the wrestling team there are a few muslim kids in my weight class and a few in heavier weight classes, and I have never had trouble plowing through them. I don't intend for this to sound hateful or vulgar, rather I'm pursuing an explanation as to why muslims suck at sports. Also I was hoping that Muhammad Ali was muslim so I could use him as an example for my project, BUT ethnically he is n^e^g^r^o not arab, and as it turns out he is an agnostic, not muslim. So no Muhammad Ali is just another black guy who is great at his chosen sport. Edit: Yahoo answers is flawed and changed the word n^e^g^r^o to ******. N^e^g^r^o is the ethnic classification of my people, I don't understand why YA! would conflict with this. Instead, due to the insufficient knowledge and unsophisticated tools, the way ancient humans struggled with some tricky problems was kind of awkward, or could even be totally wrong. In the second place, even if the knowledge of previous generations is reasonable, it may no longer be feasible in terms of contemporary society. Such as the old style of constructions or the traditional educational strategy are all unjustified and out of date for the current human lifestyle. In the third place, if people always obey and regard the historical path to understand and handle present challenges, there would be no more innovations and the progress of development would cease. Imagine that, if Columbus followed the sailing line of former pioneers, it would be impossible for him to discover the American land. Admittedly, studying historic events may take advantage to present generations in certain aspects. For instance, in view of the current financial crises, we can obtain valuable data and information by learning from previous cases. However, with the constant change of the international business atmosphere, the historical experience can be considered as a mere reference, rather than as a magic weapon for overwhelming this crisis. To sum up, as change is an inevitable fact, it is inappropriate that modern people rely on history to tackle current issues. People should spare no effort to adopt existing methods and pursue new methodology for overcoming the obstacles they encountered at this moment and in the future. more

Resolved Question: helpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp?

Part 1 - Analyzing Primary Sources: (2 points each / 10 total points) Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. The passage is an excerpt from President Bill Clinton’s State of the Union address in January 1998. . . . As we enter the twenty-first century, the global economy requires us to seek opportunity not just at home, but in all markets of the world. We must shape this global economy, not shrink from it. In the last five years, we have led the way in opening new markets, with 240 trade agreements that remove foreign barriers to products bearing the proud stamp “Made in the U.S.A.” Today, record high exports account for fully one-third of our economic growth. I want to keep them growing, because that’s the way to keep America growing and to advance a safer, more stable world. . . . I know there is opposition to more comprehensive trade agreements. I have listened carefully and I believe that the opposition is rooted in two fears: first, that our trading partners will have lower environmental and labor standards, which will give them an unfair advantage in our market and do their own people no favors, even if there’s more business; and, second, that if we have more trade, more of our workers will lose their jobs and have to start over. I think we should seek to advance worker and environmental standards around the world. I have made it abundantly clear that it should be a part of our trade agenda. But we cannot influence other countries’ decisions if we send them a message that we’re backing away from trade with them. 1. According to President Clinton, what accounted for one-third of U.S. economic growth? 2. What opposition to comprehensive trade agreements does President Clinton acknowledge? 3. What did President Clinton make “abundantly clear” should be a part of the trade agenda? 4. Why does President Clinton want to keep trade agreements going? 5. In the following quotation, what “decisions” is President Clinton referring to? “But we cannot influence other countries’ decisions if we send them a message that we’re backing away from trade with them.” Part Two – Interpreting Graphs: (2 points each / 6 points total) Use the graph below to answer the following questions: oWhat does the graph show? oWhat trend (pattern) do you see? oHow can you explain this trend? Voting Question: COLLEGE ESSAY; read first paragraph? [revised]?

i posted this earlier, and took the advice of what a couple people had said. hope this is better. (: TOPIC: Imagine you have graduated from Temple University. You are preparing to attend your 10-year reunion, and the alumni office has asked you to write a one-page essay about your personal and professional accomplishments since graduation. What would yours say? Ten years ago, I would have never imagined myself living aboard working as a public accountant partaking in international business. Yet, here I am, residing in Paris; the heart of France. This was an opportunity that did not just arrive at my door - it was achieved through the hard work and assiduous effort that I made as a student at Temple University. After earning my MBA in accounting at Fox School of Business, I have not only achieved my goals, but managed to surpass them as well. I would not be standing where I am today if it had not been for Temple University. SUGGESTIONS? comments? am i on topic completely? cause i feel in some parts that im not. any suggestion is VERY much appreciated. best feedback gets 10points!Cheese - you're feedback is very helpful, and I will edit this later on. You're right, I do come off as slightly a kiss@ss, especially near the end. XD I'll fix that. But immature and ignorant? So the Paris thing was a bit over optimistic. But you should keep in mind that Temple reads thousands of these essays. I just need a way to make mine stand out. I can't stick with the whole "Oh, I have became a successful CPA at a [blank] firm in my hometown of [blank]." I want them to at least get through my essay before they hit the snooze button. more

Honest Question? The above was sent to the below as an email. [sent to four religious teachers] Thank you for your e-mail. I will be out of the office through November 22 while I'm away doing continuing education. I will be sure to get back to you as soon as I can on my return. God bless, Nathan -- Nathan Erdman Director of Religious Education for Youth and Family Ministries Christ Church, Georgetown 3116 O Street NW Washington DC 20007 202-333-6677 nathan@christchurchgeorgetown.orgIt is Jehovah God who answers ALL questions, Jeremiah 29:11-14 American Standard Version "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope in your latter end. And ye shall call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. And I will be found of you, saith Jehovah, and I will turn again your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places wither I have driven you, saith Jehovah; and I will bring you again unto the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive." If we do not seek with all our heart that God with that hallowed name Jehovah, we stay in captive to this Devil's world and bad ways! Many Bibles rightly keep that divine name in. (See Revelation 22:18,19)Revelation 22: 18,19 King James Bible "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, [Jehovah] God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, [Jehovah] God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." If Jehovah's divine hallowed name was in his own word near 7000 times at one time, it was in there by divine law and therefore needs to stay there or be put back so all will be able to call on the right God for help. The Devil wants people to call on any god but Jehovah. And the greater number of people are in deed doing what the Devil loves having them do! Genuine theocracy is from Jehovah God! Counterfeit theocracy is from the Devil! Everlasting life comes from Jehovah not the Devil! But the choice who we worship is our free will! more

just to get this clear i'm asian-american born in the US, but frequently, sometimes twice a year, go to asia to help my asian-born uncle's growing international architecture business as an apprentice/assistant. thus i've traveled nearly everywhere and can definitely notice if something catches my eyes/ears. one such topic is oriental/white relationships since a lot of our business involves travel between nations of such people. i notice there are many relationships between white dudes and asian-american women (who are born in US) but those relationships usually seem pretty normal because both partners are able to speak american english well and share each others' thoughts and feelings well. but i notice some white dudes are in relationships with asian ladies who aren't good at english. these relationships usually happen if a white dude goes to an asian country (like china) to "teach english" or gets stationed in a US military base (like mayba japan, south korea, phillippines). it also happens if the lady goes to the US or similar non-asian country probably as an international student in college. i find such relationships seem okay but a bad idea. yes my current girlfriend is american but a big factor in that is that i was born and spent most my life in the US and english is the language i speak best. but if i was only able to speak mandarin well i probably wouldn't be in a relationship with a person who wasn't good at communicating in Mandarin. thus if i wanted a relationship with a white/caucasian lady she'd have to speak Mandarin well it would seem pretty weird and not like a true soulmate if both partners don't share a strong affinity/ability in a common language. more

Resolved Question: What should I do to become an expert in International Business?

I'm currently doing a MBA with a concentration in International Business but I think I won't get from it what I need to become an expert in this area. Which topics should I focus then on learning, which books should I be reading, which organizations should I'll be joining? And most importantly, which companies and positions should I be targeting to get a job at? more

Voting Question: Poli Sci people only!?

I need help finding a topic for a 10 page paper in my upper-level international negotiations course. Essentially, I'm looking for a case study in international negotiations to analyze, if it's contemporary that's great, if it happened some time ago I must discuss the affects it has on today. The only requirement is that it must be government to government (not government to business or vice versa). I'd really like to do something related to economics so any help would be great. Resolved Question: Should I get my High School Diploma or G.E.D? [MENSA Member]?

I am 18, and I am still in High School, and have some current issues about my High School Education and where I should go. I have about 12 Credits needed out of 24, soon to be 27. However, I haven taken upper level Classes: - AP Physics - AP Chem - AP Calc AB, BC - AP Music I have also won international awards for playing Clarinet, Math Awards and I am a Member of MENSA. (Please don't leave comments about I should be smart and know what to do - we are people too.) The credits that I am missing are a lot of the "Humanity Classes" and English Credit. I am well inclined in Science and Mathematics, but still lack Science Credit. But I am still missing about 2 years worth of credits. I would like to attend University as I feel High School is very oppressing and to my maturity level. I also disapprove of current teaching techniques. Or at least attend Community College to correct my GPA which I am sure is awful. I would enjoy learning about my topics at much higher levels. I am also very scholarly, and I know I will end up perusing a live in Academia and Research. So I really don't mind spending extra years in school. I also operation my own business and I make enough to support myself, profits of around 30K/year so far, but Research is where I belong, and I wish to attend a Top University in Genetics and Scientific Research. I am unsure if I should just take my G.E.D, and then apply to Community College to correct things, as I know I will perform just well on entrance exams. I even have AP Credit (But Failed the Class as I did not like the way things were going.) Thank you for your time! - Christopher more

I am taking a class called "Business Essentials', in hopes of making my college application look more revealing to the business management administrators at the colleges I will apply for. Resolved Question: Need some help with topics for a research paper?

We are given 5 broad topics and we must narrow it down to a specific category to write 7-12 pages for a research paper. I would appreciate any sub categories I could write on for the following: 1. Business 2. Justice/law 3. National/international politics 4. Media 5. Technology And topics we can't write about are: abortion, capital punishment, cloning, euthanasia, gay marriage, or legalization of marijuana. I was thinking about a topic on how hybrid cars how they are beneficial, but overall the production is a scam and causes much environmental harm. It really boils down to the fact if i can write 7 pages on this. more

Resolved Question: Why do some people not believe in global warming and that it is partially man made?

I try and be open minded and listen to people who have differing views than my own and understand where they are coming from. I often learn a great deal from listening to a variety of opinions. But the resistance to accepting global warming as a fact and that it is partially caused by the actions of mankind has gotten me stumped. I wonder if I understand the topic correctly and the point that the nonbelievers in global warming are making. I know many people who do not believe in global warming tend to be conservative in their political beliefs and I wonder if there is a connection. But I have not been able to find a good answer for why they believe this. I have heard them say that the earth goes through cycles of cooling and warming and this is just one of them. But the global warming we are experiencing at the moment is seen as different by the majority of the scientific community and not caused from a natural cycle. Since 2007 no scientific body of national or international standing has maintained a dissenting opinion about global warming. They all say that it is real and that it is at least partially caused by man. The New York Times reported: "The world's leading climate scientists said global warming has begun, is very likely caused by man, and will be unstoppable for centuries.... The phrase very likely translates to a more than 90 percent certainty that global warming is caused by man's burning of fossil fuels. That was the strongest conclusion to date, making it nearly impossible to say natural forces are to blame." Also On May 2, 2006, the Federal Climate Change Science Program, commissioned by the Bush administration in 2002, released the first of 21 assessments. “Studies ... show clear evidence of human influences on the climate system (due to changes in greenhouse gases, aerosols, and stratospheric ozone).... The observed patterns of change over the past 50 years cannot be explained by natural processes alone, nor by the effects of short-lived atmospheric constituents (such as aerosols and tropospheric ozone) alone.” And in a May 29, 2008 assessment, they stated: “It is well established through formal attribution studies that the global warming of the past 50 years is due primarily to human-induced increases in heat-trapping gases.” There also seems to be a link to global warming and the recent economic problems the world has been facing. Cap n' tax is one way the government has decided to deal with these linked issues here in the United States and in Europe they have dealt with it by creating the European Union Emission Trading System. I wonder if it is just a political conservative view here in the USA to attack anything that might hold businesses back from making a prophet. But if that is the case then why isn’t the conservative argument just focusing on how to deal with global warming and not try and argue against the idea of global warming as a whole? I feel like I am missing something. Why would apparently rational, intelligent people argue so strongly against something that seems self evident? I am still trying to be open minded about people not believing in global warming and that it is partially manmade but I have not been able discern why they make these claims. I would very much appreciate an explanation. more

Resolved Question: Does anyone know any little known quotes about genocide and/or injustices?

I recently graduated from college and double-majored in Business and International Relations. I was recently asked to speak at an upcoming symposium focusing on modern genocide and/or injustices. Out of the list of quotes which I compiled, I settled on Elie Wiesel's quote: "We are on the threshold of a new century, a new millennium. What will the legacy of this vanishing century be? How will it be remembered in the new millennium? Surely it will be judged, and judged severely, in both moral and metaphysical terms. These failures have cast a dark shadow over humanity: two World Wars, countless civil wars, the senseless chain of assassinations - Gandhi, the Kennedys, Martin Luther King, Sadat, Rabin - bloodbaths in Cambodia and Nigeria, India and Pakistan, Ireland and Rwanda, Eritrea and Ethiopia, Sarajevo and Kosovo; the inhumanity in the gulag and the tragedy of Hiroshima. And, on a different level, of course, Auschwitz and Treblinka. So much violence; so much indifference." Being a college grad, I know better than to comprise my presentation almost exclusively of quotes and be the basis, but I just want to provide background information. I realize that some of the topics mentioned aren't exactly contemporary, but does anyone know of any interesting little-known quotes of this nature? Thanks for whatever you can provide... more

Resolved Question: To be a senator which form of political science would be best?

I have studied other senators but i can't really find exactly what they branched off in to.. thanks for feedbackk. Comparative Politics (Most courses satisfy X area multicultural requirement) Introductory course and prerequisite to upper-level courses in the field: CPO2002 Comparative politics studies the domestic politics of countries throughout the world and develops an understanding of how politics works by observing the differences and similarities among various political systems. Comparative politics is interdisciplinary because to understand the politics of a country, we must also understand something of its economy, social system, international position, history, and culture. International Relations Introductory course and prerequisite to upper-level courses in the field: INR2002 International relations is the study of the political relationships among the world’s national governments. Courses in international relations look at many of the problems and issues of world politics and provide possible explanations for the events we witness. Topics include such things as the causes and effects of war and peace; the difficulties faced by nations in making agreements; the role of international organizations such as the United Nations; the formation of foreign policy; and global responses to contemporary social problems. American Government (Note that some courses with the POS prefix are not American Government courses) Introductory course and prerequisite to upper-level courses in the field: POS1041 The study of American politics aims to answer important and enduring questions about politics and government at the local, state, and national levels. Various courses consider such topics as political participation and voting behavior; the conduct of elected politicians, both in campaigning and in governing; and institutions like interest groups, bureaucracy, and the courts. Courses use theoretical, historical, and analytical perspectives to illuminate the workings of the American political system. Public Policy Introductory course and prerequisite to upper-level courses in the field: PUP3002 The study of public policy focuses on what governments do, how and why they do it, and what the consequences are. Such studies may focus on governmental decisions made at any level and in any nation, and can range from studies of specific government actions or programs to more general assessments of government performance. Public Administration Introductory course: PAD3003 – a good first course, not prerequisite to upper-level courses Public administration courses are taught by the Reuben Askew School of Public Administration. The PAD internship is the only one of their courses that cannot count toward the political science major. Public administration studies the role and functioning of bureaucracies in the formulation and implementation of public policy. It looks at the legal, financial, and managerial aspects of government activities, with a practical and applied approach. It can be thought of a business administration for the public sector.IM NOT ASKING HOW TO BE A SENATOR. Resolved Question: Which of the two major US political parties should I join, and where on the political spectrum do I stand?

I'm going to list my position on a few common "hot topics" and I need you to tell me: 1. Which of the two major US political parties I should register with (I'm not wasting my time with any third party. Tell me whether the GOP or the Democrat party is **most** in line with my views). 2. Where I should say I stand on the three dimensional political spectrum (this involves more than just a simple bipartisan label. As I understand it, with respect to economic issues one is somewhere between "statist" and "libertarian", while with respect to personal issues one is somwhere between "liberal" and "conservative") SO HERE GOES: Abortion: I'm 100% pro-choice for the first two trimesters of pregnancy. Abortions should only be procured in the third trimester due to health risks of either the fetus OR the mother. Gay rights: I'm in favor of extending the federal right to marry to gays, lesbians, and transgendered people. Separation: I firmly believe in the complete separation of church and state. The government (and all its subsidiaries) should in no way shape or form endorse anything religious. Likewise, government must stay completely out of church business. Embryonic Stem-Cell Research: Obviously since I'm pro-choice I'm pro stem-cell research. Military: I firmly believe that a world superpower **must** have the strongest military possible. That military must be a noble and moral military though; one that does not torture or abuse its power. Israel V. Palestine: Israel has an innate right to exist. If I had to put an arbitrary number to the amount of guilt to be foisted on the two parties, I'd say some 85% to 90% of the conflict rests squarely on the Palestinian shoulders, especially while they have HAMAS representing them. Health-Care: I believe access to basic health care should be a civil right. I hope to see a **Single Payer System** implemented while the actual **rendering of service** be left to the private sector. Government should pay for health care, but doctors and hospitals should compete. Education: I take a very similar position on education as I do with health care. I wish to see a **Single Payer System** replace our current socialist system. The Government should front the bill for education however we the consumers deserve to have a choice in who renders the service. The Government should not provide education, only the money for it. I hope to see schools COMPETING for students and funds. Environment: We ALL have to live in the same environment on the same planet. NOBODY NO MATTER HOW MUCH MONEY THEY HAVE has a right to destroy our collective environment. Though I typically consider myself a "free-market" advocate, the environment is where I draw the line. Anti-pollution laws, carbon-emission laws, etc. I 100% favor. Hate Crimes Legislation: 100% against them. A crime is a crime is a crime and a legal victim is only those who are DIRECTLY affected and accosted by the crime. Free Speech: This is a BIGGY to me. Europe and Canada with their "hate speech" statutes and their howbeit subtle forms of censorship can go to hell. Every person should have complete freedom in expressing their ideas no matter how ugly, bigoted, and revolting such ideas are. The government should in no way impede on such speech. Trade: I advocate international free trade. SO..... Where do I stand? 1. Should I register with the Democrats or the Republicans? 2. Am I a "Liberal-Libertarian", a "Conservative-Libertarian", a "Liberal-Statist", or a "Conservative-Statist"? more

Resolved Question: Zeitgeist on the Federal Reserve, What can I do?

Well, I just spent the past hour watching a video that has drastically changed my opinion on certain topics beyond a doubt. If the international bankers do indeed continue with their plan to unify the world under a one world government and take away our freedom, who we are, what we stand for with the RFID chip, is there anything I can do. I am a simple AMERICAN without any ties to politicians or big businesses but am willing to fight for the freedom and liberties that was bestowed upon myself by our founding fathers. What the Rockefeller's, Rothschild's etc are doing is out right madness and HAVE TO BE STOPPED. Who is going to stop them when they control everything though, from our currency to our media they are controlling our world as we know it. Should we go back to the Gold Standard, if so what can I do to help. I do not want to sit on my @** as the dumbed down american public is being swindled by the ones who we think are out there doing our country a service. How can we get our government to come out with the truth?Does any one else believe that all these cash for gold businesses going on are set up by large groups to collect a substantial portion of gold so when the time comes to move to the amero the thought of using gold would not even be in contention. more

Resolved Question: Best way to learn about investment management and practice it?

I've become very interested in finance/international finance and all related topics (Investment, private equity, mutual funds, hedge funds, stock market, portfolio, securities, trading ect), this has come to me since starting to work at a bank. Someone taught me that I can self teach myself all the skills I need for the topics listed above and has given me a list of books I should buy, implying that paying for college might be unnecessary. Resolved Question: 1984 by George Orwell essay?

So my topic is to talk about if i believe our u.s. government is going to be like that of 1984's. I talked about how the surveillance technology is one reason we could become like the book and another is how the economy is bad and the gov. has to take over the companies. But, by doing that, the government has control over those companies which controls the salaries, like 1984. In Winston’s world, 1984 was a time where no one could be trusted, nothing was what it seemed, and thinking was considered a violation by law. Winston’s world was a society in which the government had absolute power and dictated the daily lives of the citizens through the use of technology and economic control. Telescreens, camera-like devices, were placed in rooms to observe people’s every movements, speakers listened in on people’s conversations and little things such as a person’s breathing, and spies were hiding in every direction. The government also had total control on the economy, controlling salaries of all citizens. Today, the government has cameras placed almost everywhere, they could listen to and trace anyone’s calls, and are pushing for RFID (Radio Frequency ID) tracking microchips to be placed inside of humans and everyday-items. The government is supposedly using surveillance for “security” purposes, but if under the wrong hands, they could use the sophisticated technologies to control people’s everyday activities, similar to the world of 1984. In addition, the bank and automotive bailouts making the headlines today further strengthens the government power of the U.S. economy. Government intervention allows them to control the salaries and bonuses of both the financial and automotive industries. In public bathrooms, malls, schools, buses, streetlights, buildings – Cameras are placed almost everywhere. Wherever a person goes, there is a high probability that a camera is around and watching. Even a person’s conversation on the phone or email to a friend may be read without the person’s knowledge. Months after September 11, 2001, President Bush signed a law that “broadly expanded the government’s authority to eavesdrop on the international telephone calls and e-mail messages of American citizens without warrants” (Risen 1). The law was signed due to the infamous tragedies of 9/11 caused by the attacks of terrorists. The surveillance program, also known as the Patriot allows the government to screen telephone and internet communications for possible terrorist activity. About three years later, Bush intensified the law by legalizing “certain types of physical searches on American soil and the collection of American’s business records” (Risen 1). The emergence of the Surveillance Act is stated that it is for the security of the United States and its people, but some people debate if the federal legislation have “reduced American freedom without increasing our security” (Bovard 1). In 2002, a FBI agent came into a library and had the list of all users surrendered because someone “smelled something strange” about a library patron of Middle Eastern descent. The intensifying of government surveillance throughout the years proves that the government is becoming like that of 1984’s. As this is happening, people’s rights are decreasing and their freedom is becoming limited. These days, the economy is devastated and numerous businesses that once flourished are now in great trouble, are near bankruptcy, or are already bankrupted. Recently, big financial and auto companies, Bank of America, Citigroup, General Motors, and Chrysler.... So i don't know what to say after that... my only sources i can use are periodicals (newspapers) and the book, 1984. So I'm looking at this one article to talk about the government owning companies but i'm confused by it and don't know how to explain it in the paragraph. please help T.T http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/03/30/AR2009033003409.html more

Resolved Question: 3 Questions about (so called) Armenian Genocide?

1.Why does not any government accept/deny any other scientific controversial theories (i mean like German government accepting the Big Bang Theory and French governments saying "Nooo! We, in France, do not accept that theory and we will send anybody who accepts it to prison!") but they insist on accepting (so called or not) Armenian Genocide which actually is a business of history, "a scientific discipline" and while there are remarkable historians who disagree? Doesn't that restrict the independence of scientific constitutions? 2. How come the parliament members of a government "who are neither historians nor scientists" can decide on a controversial topic? this last Q is for Turks 3. Why does Turkey not found an international institute whose aim will be to study genocides and such controversial cases all around the world, so that (maybe)... one day science winsOMG look how many trolls we have here... more

Resolved Question: How do I study abroad for my MBA at (University of Western Sydney) US and what Jobs can I work? (BSME)?

Okay. So I have read up on the costs of studying abroad and it seems to be a great way to save a lot of money on a graduate degree, as well as learn some international business experience while immersing myself in a different culture. I am currently a student at the University of North Carolina Charlotte completing a 4 year degree in Mechanical Engineering in approximately 2 years or so, and plan on obtaining an MBA at UWS (University of Western Sydney) after I have completed my degree here. I also realize there are many of tests and regulations that are required, such as the TOEFL and IELTS, as well as having to study the GMAT (it is an MBA after all) I am fluent in English already, while also delving into the studies of French, Spanish, Mandarin, and Cantonese languages. I heard this will improve my chances of acceptance into the area. I was curious as to which visa I should/can apply for if I intend to look for a job while I study there, Hopefully in Mechanical Engineering or a translator if I can't find that. I am not sure what regulations they have and would incorporate while you are a student in that area, and if we are allowed to work. I am hoping to study part time for the MBA during night hours while working so that I don't just run completely out of money, and hopefully obtain work experience as a Mechanical Engineer in a local company or branch. I am assuming that western Sydney has a lot of job offers in this occupation of course, which I am not very certain of. If there are any Aussies in this area and have knowledge on this topic, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again in advance, I know it is quite a long and complicated question. Anyone? Resolved Question: is this normal for people to act this stupid at my job?

some quick details without giving too much info. i have worked at a helpdesk for a major international company for the past 2 years and my current position is to serve as a sort of team lead. ive been doing this for the past year. when our helpdesk analysts have issues, they come to me and i usually fix them/point them in the right direction. anyway, this sets me up for lots of interaction with my coworkers. most of the people that work here are fat and have horrible body odor some of the fat people like to walk up to my lunch and just help themselves - i cant eat after someone has touched my food any time someone says something they think should be funny or cool, its just totally freaking retarded and off topic. i will tell people how to do something multiple times per night, several days a week...and they will continue to ask me how to do it. example ' how do i tie my shoes' then i show them how.... 5 minutes later ' ok, but how do i tie my shoes? ' the leadership has been hiring more black people (nothing against blacks!) as a more affirmative action motion. the only problem is that they are hiring these ghetto thug guys and since 100% of our business is done on the phone... you'd think they would be required to speak professionally. they constantly use that 'thugspeak ebonics' tone and nobody (except the other ganstathugs) can understand a damn thing they say. i feel like im taking crazy pills. nobody else seems to notice these idiots but me... do i not belong? or am i the crazy one? more

Resolved Question: Very Important Career Path Guidance Needed?

Hi, this is a lengthy question but please could I have the best possible answers from people who may have done what I want to do with my life, or are very knowledgeable in this field. I'm currently 16 years old and live in the UK, finishing my final year in secondary school in the next two months. My predicted grades are good on the onset (As & Bs), and I'm strong in Maths. My dream is to one day move out to the USA and live and work there as an airline pilot. I have come to love aircraft over the years (from around 5) as I fly at least three times a year and know all the types etc. etc. very well. For college, I will be studying Maths, Further Maths, Physics & Business Studies (are these good choices for my career path?), but after this I have no clue at all as to where next, when and what to study, and how. I would love to train in the USA to fulfill this dream, but the Internet just returns hard to understand information on the topic, and I would like some advice I can count on about my college subjects and most importantly where to next. Is it possible for me to train in the US, cost effectively? What is a green card? How can I get one? Do I need one? What else would I need? Would someone other than my low-middle class parents be able to fund the expenses? Could I ever live along the North Shore in Chicago and work for like AA or Continental, based at O'hare International Airport? Please give me some valuable advice as to how to do this after college and I will seriously consider it, because at the moment I haven't a clue. Many, many thanks Tom. more

Trust me this class is not easy but academics shouldn't be easy. I want to get into the Finance field. Investment banking, Investment managment, or even one day go in for business myself in real estate investment and securities. Right now as a sophomore my weighted GPA is 3.77. Please you don't have to tell me. I already know it is low. I have over 200 hours of community service. I'm invloved in Amnesty International (treasurer), Film team (we film school sporting events and announce), Math League, I'm looking to start a debate team and chess club if the school will every fund me but that is a whole nother issue. If I do well on the SAT's, Get even more community service hours, raise my GPA. I"m taking 2 more AP's next year and there topics that interest me unlike biology. In addition to a good essay can I get into schools such as Cornell, UC Berkley, Michigan State, UCLA, Columbia, George Town, Boston College. I know a few that I mentioned are pushing it but I still have another year to improve along with this quater that I'm currently in so I'm trying very hard. Excuse the spelling. I type fast and I don't really check for spelling unless it is an important paper or document. more

Resolved Question: Is this what we want to saddle ourselves with in an Economic Depression (see below)?

Turkey's industrial output plummets, economy slows 18 mins ago Hande Culpan Print Story Turkey's industrial output plunged by a record 23.7 percent in February compared to activity 12 months ago, official data showed Wednesday, strengthening expectations that the once-booming emerging market economy is heading into recession. The data, published by the Turkish Statistics Institute, showed that the biggest contraction was in the automative sector which plummeted by a staggering 58.7 percent. Manufacturing industry output was down by 25.9 percent in total, the institute said. "We expect a similar output performance in March. However we expect some recovery starting in April as the recently introduced tax cuts have led to inventory depletion in some of the key industries such as the automotive," Yarkin Cebeci, a senior economist at JP Morgan, said. Last month, the Turkish government announced tax cuts in the housing, automotive, appliances and electronics sectors for three months in a bid to revive falling demand. The February figures also increase pressure on the central bank to cuts its key rates as the decline in demand pulls down inflation which hit 7.89 percent in March. "This result supports the case for another 50 basis point cut by the Central bank in this month?s monetary policy meeting," Cebeci said. In March, the central bank trimmed its key borrowing rate to 10.5 percent in the fifth consecutive cut since November. Analysts underlined that the figures point to a deeper contraction in gross domestic product (GDP) in the first quarter of the year after the economy slumped a massive 6.2 percent in the last quarter of 2008. Gains the first three quarters of 2008 helped GDP end 2008 with a 1.1 percent growth. "We expect gross domestic product to plunge 9.0 percent in the first quarter, 5.1 percent in the second quarter and 3.1 percent in the third quarter and then grow 3.6 percent in the last quarter of the year," Cebeci said. The scenario sees Turkey's economy contracting by 3.4 percent in the whole of 2009, he added. The Turkish economy had been one of the strongest in the region in recent years, having grown by 8.4 percent in 2005, 6.9 percent in 2006 and 4.7 percent in 2007 under recovery programmes backed by the International Monetary Fund in the wake of two severe financial crises. The government is under pressure to finalize a long-delayed fresh deal with the IMF to weather the crisis and has said that it will invite an IMF team this month to conluded negoations which had been suspended since January. Financial markets and business circles have long been pressing for the deal, but the government is under fire for dragging its hells on the deal ahead of local elections on March 29 which saw the ruling party lose support for mismanaging the economic crisis.Beefy - don't play with the grown ups then, go back to play school.Obama & the EU want to add Turkey to our problems - why ?!Ray - i was probably referring of the ass-licking of our leader Brown toward Obama.only 3 answers when celeb trivia gets loads? speaks volumes !! more
