Verizon’s wireless business shines; ‘Comfortable’ with FiOS adds

Verizon topped its second quarter targets Monday courtesy of a strong wireless business and executives said demand is holding up despite economic concerns.

The telecom giant reported second quarter earnings of 66 cents a share and 67 cents a share excluding integration costs. Wall Street was expecting earnings of 65 cents a share. Revenue was up 3.7 percent from a year ago to $24.1 billion, a tally that was roughly in line with expectations.

Verizon's big story–as is the case with most quarters (statement)–was the company's wireless business, which continues to enjoy decent subscriber growth and low churn. AT&T also had strong wireless results. The takeaway: AT&T and Verizon are taking share from other carriers, but not necessarily each other. In fact, Verizon said it hasn't seen any defections due to AT&T's iPhone launch (despite what you could argue is a weaker phone lineup). more

NC ranks among top states for business climate The Business

Texas, North Carolina and Georgia have the best business climates among the 50 states, according to a recent survey of executives by Development Counsellors International.

North Carolina ranked second among the 281 respondents, with 30 percent saying the state has the best business climate.

Texas was No. 1 among 41 percent of survey participants, while Georgia was third (20 percent). They were followed by Tennessee and Florida (15 percent each) and Nevada (14 percent).

Executives frequently cited a strong labor market and low operating costs in selecting the top states.

The poll placed California, New York and Michigan at the bottom.

China, India and Mexico were selected as the top countries outside the U.S. more

Merriam named "small business champion" by trade association

The president of a Schenectady insurance firm has been named the state's 2008 "small business champion" by the National Federation of Independent Business.

The honor for Brian Merriam, president of the 113-year-old Merriam Insurance Agency, was announced July 28. The business lobby group gives the award each year.

Merriam is the fourth generation to run his family's insurance business, which has a staff of about 20 people. He is also the former chairman of Center City Sportsplex, a multi-use facility in downtown Schenectady.

Mike Elmendorf, president of NFIB's New York chapter, called Merriam "loyal, tireless and reliable."

"Despite his considerable obligations running his own business, he continuously makes himself available to join our battles in Albany," Elmendorf said in a statement. more

Chains are marketing to young shoppers and teens through the media. Kmart is sponsoring the new reality show, "High School Musical," on the Disney Channel. Various scenes will be in Kmart stores and Kmart products will be featured. Hi guys, I have done piano performance for 13 years and finished one year university and quit. I thought I should do any sorta of business course to get a good-money career. I also have an idea of doing my own business in the future when I have enough fund. What should I study in University? What qualification would be recognised and/or beneficial for me after 3 years of study to get a job that pays me fortune? I am also curious about Information System Technology course. What do they actually learn and what can they do after graduate? I am good with computers and people come to me to gain new information and stuff. I am also interested in science. but Time and Money won't allow me to study space science for example... I'm creative and work well. I do well anything that's given to me to do... :S I am thinking about Accounting&Finance / International business/ HR management/ Entrepreneurship. I thought about Management and Marketing as well but it seems rather dull. Or am I completely wrong? I looked through all the books and it talks about all the common sense that most of people would be able to do without the education. The more I think about it the more I like it. Let's divide the US into Liberals and Conservatives. We've become like a party of hikers stranded on a mountain slope. Half want to stay put and wait for rescue, and the other half want to get as far back down the slope as they can. Both sides could be right, both are willing to stake their lives on their ideas, and both are ready to kill the other side for resisting what must be done. So, let's split up. The Liberals get the Northeast and both coasts: the blue states. If we get all the blue states from 2008, that includes New Mexico, Colorado, and Florida. Also, Hawaii. I'd throw in Florida for the Conservatives just to sweeten the pot. I suggest we name ourselves the Social Democratic States of America. The SDSA. During the partition there will be some messy splits, and a lot of dramatic exoduses and ethnic cleansing.
