String of break-ins plagues downtown

At least five downtown businesses have been burglarized during the past week. The rash of burglaries plaguing the downtown business corridor has resulted in a greater police presence in the area.“Between U.S. Highway 90 and Railroad Street is where (burglars) are hitting," said Lake City Police Department public information officer Lt. Joe Moody. “They've hit Tucker's (Steak & Seafood) about three times."Moody said Peloni's Plumbing, 330 NW Railroad St.; Club Mansion, Marion Avenue; Flowers Sunbeam Bakery, 504 NW Main Blvd.; and A Company of Angels, 277 N. Marion Ave., have all fallen victim to burglars. In addition to the burglaries, a car was stolen from Ruppert's Bakery & Cafe, 184 N. Marion Ave., during the weekend. Authorities arrested a local man for the car theft, and the car has been recovered. more

BP approves Willets plan

To date, the city has announced agreements with four businesses, and the other property owners have claimed the city is not negotiating in good faith with them.In addition, a number of City Councilmembers and business owners continue to blast the city for holding the spectre of eminent domain over the businesses. For many in Queens, Marshall's approval did not come as a surprise as she has frequently trumpeted the benefits of the project during appearances throughout the borough during the past two years. However, City Councilmember Hiram Monserrate, who represents the Willets Point area and has been a critic of the city's current plans for the site, jumped the gun by releasing a statement on Friday, July 25 criticizing Marshall's recommendation - five full days before her recommendations were finalized."This process has successfully disenfranchised the Queens community from a project that will determine their future for decades to come," read part of Monserrate's statement on Friday, July 25. more

Two IndyMac Customers Caught Unawares Offer Lessons For All Of Us

She kept her business accounts at IndyMac Bank, including a checking account for receivables and for disbursing payroll, and a savings account.

Thanks in part to the timing of the FDIC takeover -- at that point, clients had deposited payments into her checking account but her payroll had not yet paid out, plus she was temporarily holding funds to pay into a 401(k) -- Quittel lost thousands of dollars in uninsured deposits.

Meanwhile, Andrea Bruno, a San Francisco-based marketing manager for a software company, faces a very different problem. Unrelated to the bank's financial troubles, Bruno contacted IndyMac on Thursday, July 10 -- the day before the FDIC took over -- to close out a Certificate of Deposit that was about to roll over into a new term. more

Voting Question: I don't know what to do about school anymore?

I used to be an international student in the States and got a bachelor's in finance. It took me quite a long time and I had to go back in between because it was very expensive. When I was done I got to work there for a little while after my studies, but then had to eventually return back home for good to Europe. Now I can't find a job here and it's been more than 1 year!!! The main reason for that is that they don't see the bachelor's as a degree and require a Masters all the time for everything. But that degree would take me another 2 years and I really really need work experience. Nobody in the world even cares about some stupid regular Masters in business (IT's NOT AN MBA!!!), but in my country they do. I'll be an absolute educational idiot by the time I would be out because I'm pushing 30 already right now and don't have any good job experience at all beside my job in the States before. I don't really have a clue what to do anymore. Originally I wanted to keep on working, work myself up a little, and potentially do the MBA. But how should I do that with no real work experience and such a long unemployment gap. I have no clue what to do now and really struggle with money as well. more

Resolved Question: Should I take an entry level job at an advertising firm or pursue a master's in college student affairs?

I graduated from college in May 2009 with a bachelor's degree in business marketing with a minor in international relations. While in college I was in a sorority and had the opportunity to work in the admissions office. I was involved in a lot of student activities, studied abroad, and did a few internships. I haven't had any luck landing jobs in my field. I moved back in with my parents and have been working in retail until something comes up. I was recently accepted into graduate school for a master's degree in college student affairs, but I also interviewed for a full-time entry level job at a global advertising firm. I am very unsure of what direction to take, and just wanted to get some input about each direction. I definately enjoyed the college experience, and I think it would be neat to work at a college, but it is all I've known. I like learning, and the college environment. Part of me thinks that I might just be attracted to it because it's all I've known. However advertising/marketing is what I went to school for, but since I haven't worked in it, I'm not sure direction I can take with it. There's a lot that I want to do in my life, but I'm not sure what my end goal is. I feel like I'll figure out what my "dream" is as I go, but I need to start somewhere. I'm also unsure if it would be unwise to turn down a full-time to pursue grad school. I know I'd like to get a master's degree someday for sure and work on the international level but just not sure what direction. Suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Why do I only get this problem with African Americans?

I'm Mexican, I own a laundromat here at the border. I studied college in the USA, I know laundromats are very common in the USA. As cheap as laundromats in the USA are, college students are sometimes too cheap to go to laundromat, so they often do their laundry at friend's house. Even so, laundromats are common in the USA, and they are very cheap compared to laundromats in Mexico. Laundromats are a luxury in Mexico, so they are more expensive. All of my machines are American, and they work with quarters. The machines work with 3 quarters, BUT the price of a machine it's clearly stated on the walls in HUGE BOLD letters; a machine costs 20 PESOS (1.53 US Dollars.) My laundromat is very close to the International Bridge, so a lot of American people come my laundromat. Whenever White people come, they look at the prices, they pay me, and I insert my quarters into the machines. It's a simple business transaction. Whenever Black people come here, they go straight to the machines, and insert their own quarters. I tell them they have to pay me 20 PESOS per machines, and I'm the one who inserts the quarters. Then they always start yelling telling me they are American, and that's the way it's done in the America. So I have to tell them they are not in the States, and that they need to pay what's stated on the walls. They always either: 1.- Pay me, and won't stop cursing the entire time. 2.- Get angry, start cursing, and storm out. 3.- Get angry, refuse to pay me, and force me to disconnect the machines, give them their quarters back, and ask them to leave. I've had this business for over 2 years. I've never EVER had this problem with White people. But it has become expected whenever a Black person comes by. Why does this happen? more

Resolved Question: What exactly is a business school?

I always thought it's for postgrad students that want to do an MBA or some business relevant masters. That's what I thought. But now I'm a bit confused. For instance. Macquarie University in Australia offers a Master of International Business and a Master of Commerce. But it's taught by the faculty of Business & Economics and not their business school. At other schools the same majors are taught by the business school. So why are some of these Masters offered by the university and others such as the MBA always by the Business School? more

JNU has provisions for SAARC students. Whereas, I studied 3 years Bachelors in Business Studies(BBS) from Tribhuvan University. more

Voting Question: Is it legal to volunteer at businesses in the US if you are an international student?

International students are not allowed to work in the States, so I was wondering if it's legal for them to volunteer at businesses without getting paid for the work in order to gain experience. I heard once before that it is and another time that it's not. Does it depend on the state? more

Resolved Question: can you find any mistakes in this translation?

this is a translation from italian to english. can you tell me if there are any mistakes, please? (Sorry if it is long) 4- Institute computerized joint training courses, putting to use in project the knowledge and the means to develop them, making the most of the mutual excellences of people operating in the same professional field. 5- Nowadays the English is used like an International communication language, forcing people from different country to speak a language not their own, creating discomforts, practical mistakes and troubles of understanding and speaking. So, we propose to create cultural exchanges directly from language to language, avoiding the obstacle – otherwise required – to speak a third language. So, everybody can speak and listen to in his mother language. 6- Facilitate the search of a qualified translator both the institutions and privates, creating a network of professionalism based on our acquaintances and experts operating in the specialized translation field. The above-mentioned goals become doable through some proposes about the organizational, management and strategic activities of our company. The propose, that we expect to complete within a very short time, can be summarized as follows: 1- Development and strengthening of the website: we think that a valid support on the web, accessible to all, enabling the data storage and the intuitive search of video lessons and training aid, can be a decisive step forward for our project. The service, that the students who are not part of the association will access only on payment, will be available in different languages, depending on the members and relationships. All this is aimed not only to financial gain, but also to an increase in the prestige of the institutions involved. 2- Creation of a database: thus the users can register autonomously, and insert their curriculum vitae, which will be translated into several languages and will be organized systematically by sector and area of responsibility. Creazione di un database: in questo modo gli utenti potranno registrarsi autonomamente, ed inserire i loro curricula vitae, che saranno tradotti in più lingue e verranno organizzati sistematicamente per settore e ambito di competenza. The database can be accessed easily by businesses looking for staff in order to encourage the exchange and the mobility of International professionals. In this way companies may have provided the most competent people to perform a particular activity, setting the search according their most functional criterions. 3- Huge possibilities for the use of associated: we can handle a very large number of translations (the language groups are: (Albanian, Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Slovak, Spanish, Ukrainian, on the rise) on many areas in which we are competent, such as: - telecommunication - tourism - hospitality industry - food - fashion - automotive industry - field of art and literature As a matter of fact people who already have work experience in these areas are part of our association – split into language groups led by native speakers – and who have accumulated a considerable background of knowledge in the field mentioned above. One of the beliefs of our association is the necessity and the opportunity to think big, opportunity – how our work will demonstrate – don’t have to be denied to anyone, especially when, behind a project, big dreams and estimated life are hidden. The peculiarity of GRADg is that, unlike other associations of mediators with similar purposes, it doesn’t work only “from” and “to” the country of origin, but it intends to put in touch different countries, sometimes with little connection between them. more

Voting Question: High School Schedule Dilemma?

I’m a junior in high school this year, and I’m anticipating a rejection from my guidance counselor for a request for my senior year schedule. I’m not sure whether I should take her advice this year, given responses she’s given me in the past. I go to a relatively big high school which offers a variety of classes to its students, and I am interested in taking classes such as International Business, Arabic, Chinese, Comparative Religions and (that’s right - AP) Comparative Government. I have never taken a single AP class in my life, and this is largely in part because I performed poorly my freshman year due to having a difficult transition from switching from middle school to high school. Ever since, my guidance counselor placed me in ‘regular’ classes and rejected any requests from me to take more challenging classes. I had to fight to take a class in Arabic and Chinese, but was rejected from taking AP US Government and AP English Composition because of my previous courses lacking ‘rigor’ due to her placing me in lower-level classes. I feel betrayed by my guidance counselor and insulted that she thinks so lowly of me and of my potential to learn and my capacity to understand academic material, that she thinks I can’t manage a balanced course load and that all my classes need to be watered down simply because my freshman year marks weren’t ’stellar’. Please, correct me if I’m wrong, but at this point, I deserve to take the classes that I want to take, regardless of how I did 3 years ago, regardless of what my guidance counselor thinks of how I perform based off a superficial grade point average or standardized test scores, and that now more than ever I need to take more challenging classes. Please, tell me if it isn’t appropriate for me to advocate for myself and say that this year I deserve to take the classes I want to take. more

Resolved Question: Aston University (UK) and future job prospects?

Resolved Question: Help....translation i don't know if it is correct?

is this translation from italian correct. can you tell me the parts to change. (sorry if it's long) Dear Rector, We wish to inform you about the activities and the objectives of our brand new association. Naples, the city where GRADg is located, constitutes today a crucial hub for Mediterranean and international migration flows, calling to mind, in a way, some aspects of New York in the last century, constituting a real “melting pot”, inhabited by different ethnic groups, cultures and customs. It is within this scenario that the GRADg project has been set up, on the initiative of graduate and undergraduate students of the Università degli studi di Napoli L’Orientale, one of the centres of academic excellence in Italy in the study of foreign languages. Most of the members of our association comes from this university, which also contains students from Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, La Parthenope and Suor Orsola Benincasa. The GRADg constitutes as a youthful anti-unemployment search party, pursuing young recent graduate and undergraduate students whose goal is to enter the world of work. Through arrangements with universities from all over the world and, relying on the work of a large body of native speakers – as well as competent and qualified experts representing various continental and international languages – the GRADg intends to serve as a bridge between nations in achieving cultural, financial and commercial changes. It further purposes to set up arrangements between universities and companies for professional exchanges among young graduates from different countries, which will be fruitful for all parts involved. The association is constantly seeking new skills to be included in the circuit, and the University "L'Orientale" is an inexhaustible supply of young people who have achieved a high academic level. The structural and economic crisis – that according to many analysts is far from over – has created very high levels of new unemployment, while professionals have ceased altogether to exist. In this context, our goal is to create incentives and means to generate jobs through a network which connects businesses and institutions with experts in various fields. Then, the expansion beyond the borders – young people seem to have understood – represents the new frontier which will allow everybody to face this raging economic crisis, especially if it is addressed to the developing countries, or newly industrialized, along an idea of cooperation and collaboration which will be useful to both players of these exchanges. In fact, one of the most concrete and important purposes of the GRADg is precisely to provide support to companies which have interest in expanding abroad through the growth and outsourcing of the market, addressing mainly to areas that offer a very wide range of commercial possibilities and intend to be potentially one of the main actors of the world affairs of the next decades. Moreover, supporting the government entities which deal with the integration of the immigrants on the national territory is not secondary. The GRADg is anti-unemployment search, through open-minded projects, willingness to be open to new culture in a productive dynamic, promotion of opportunities of work, internships in repertory companies on the territory, development and expansion of activities abroad: our association offers all means (language skills, affability, sector-based and bureaucratic knowledge) as well as the necessary skills for a serene and correct integration between people while respecting the interests of all. Let’s summarize schematically all the goals that our association intends to pursue: 1- Provide, the education system of MESI, the possibility to train the students both Italy and other countries: activate, for each one of them, projects and concrete contacts. Let them study in other countries, developing a system for distance learning too, by using new technologies – videoconferences and other data transmission devices – in order to exchange information, applicable skills in the world of work, and by creating synergies between the different realities and their procedures. One of the main innovations is properly to use technology to make models of instant interaction, which will allow you to avoid practical, bureaucratic and economic problems, inherent in the geographical shift. 2- Propose – thanks to a deepen knowledge of the national territory – projects and internships to those interested in enlargement and development of their own skills, through a continuous process of updating that also involves cooperation with other institutional and private. 3- Capitalize the skills gained in the process of obtaining the qualification: it offers a continuous exchange of information and knowledge between experts of various countries, who have conducted a study path in the same field, to get the different methods and their limits, and then complement each other at last. 4- Ins more

Voting Question: Best MBA programs with supply chain and international business specialization?

What are some of the best European MBA programs that give students the necessary education and skill sets to move into international business and supply chain |& procurement? I have done alot of research already on Financial Times, Wall Street, Business Week, and The Economist but cannot locate any info on programs that have concentrations/excellence in supply chain. Because of their cost, we have ruled out IMD, Insead, Cambridge, IE, IESE, Oxford. Brand name (to European firms especially) with a great campus recruiting program is a must. Where should we be looking at? more

Resolved Question: Which oil companies is it okay to accept funding from?

In another question I linked to a site (www.co2science.org) which listed various studies on the Medieval Warm Period. I was criticised for this choice of site as it has accepted funding from Exxon (which i already knew, having checked Sourcewatch). From what I can gather, the criticism is that any organisation which accepts funding from a big oil company is, by that very fact, dubious. Now, I'm not sure that's particularly true (it may just be that the company feels that the organisation's efforts or research is likely to coincide with its own) but if that's the case, then what about the research from the Climate Research Unit and the Tyndall Centre who as we now know have approached Shell for funding, as the email below shows: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ""SHELL INTERNATIONAL Mick Kelly and Aeree Kim (CRU, ENV) met with Robert Kleiburg (Shell International’s climate change team) on July 4th primarily to discuss access to Shell information as part of Aeree’s PhD study (our initiative) and broader collaboration through postgrad. student project placements (their initiative), but Robert was also interested in plans for the Tyndall Centre (TC). What ensued was necessarily a rather speculative discussion with the following points emerging. Shell International would give serious consideration to what I referred to in the meeting as a ‘strategic partnership’ with the TC, broadly equivalent to a ‘flagship alliance’ in the TC proposal. A strategic partnership would involve not only the provision of funding but some (limited but genuine) role in setting the research agenda etc. Shell’s interest is not in basic science. Any work they support must have a clear and immediate relevance to ‘real-world’ activities. They are particularly interested in emissions trading and CDM. Robert seemed to be more interested in supporting overseas (developing world) than home/EU studentships, presumably because of the credit abroad and their involvement in CDM. (It is just possible this impression was partially due to the focus on Aeree’s work in the overall discussion but I doubt it.) It seems likely that any support for studentships would be on a case by case basis according to the particular project in question. Finally, we agreed that we would propose a topic to this year’s MSc intake as a placement with Shell and see if any student expressed interest. If this comes off we can run it under the TC banner if it would help. I would suggest that Robert and his boss are invited to the TC launch at the very least (assuming it will be an invite type affair). Question is how can we and who should take this a step further. Maybe a meeting at Shell with business liaison person, Mike H if time and myself if time? I’d like to/am happy to stay involved through the next stage but then will probably have to back off. We didn’t cover the new renewable energy foundation. Mick Kelly 11 September 2000"" uea-tyndall-shell-memo.doc ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What "role in setting the research agenda" did Shell get, and why is it not a problem that the Tyndall Centre accepts money from Shell, BP and other oil companies, and lets them shape the "research agenda" but when a website accepts a donation from an oil company, then any study it so much as refers to is suspect? Double standards? .EDIT - @ Don't Panic. You wrote: ""It's a question of the driving force behind the research. Who wants the research to be done and for what purpose. "" ~ So it's okay for the CRU to take money from those nice people at Shell because their intentions are pure? (Like justifying emissions trading, eh?) The driving force behind my question? I want to understand why some people feel its fine for big oil companies to have a role in shaping the research agenda (when it's clear that their only motivation is making money from emissions trading) when the research agrees with what they believe. But when the an oil company funds research or a site that says stuff they disagree with, all of sudden that connection means we can't believe any of it. .---------------------------------------------------- EDIT @ Dawei Good point. I should of included a link to a cached copy of the (now deleted) CRU History page at the University of East Anglia. http://66.102.9.132/search?q=cache:http://www.cru.uea.ac.uk/cru/about/history/ As you will see, Shell, BP - and Greenpeace - are listed amongst their sources of funding (scroll to bottom of page for list). . more

Voting Question: can i transfer to UPenn or Yale or stanford? (stat's are given)?

i now attend Brandeis University. I will be applying for junior transfer spots. I am primarily interested in those three schools (yale, UPenn, stan). As an international student i really dont fit in this school. the general lack of 'opportunities' for non-jewish student could be the main reason. also, i want more challenge. i came to US after 8th grade to start HS here. i had major english problem, so i couldnt apply to top notch schools (higher than Bran that is) due to low average GPA (tho the improvement is obvious). now i am as fluent as a native and i want more challenge. i majoring in econ right now. here are the stats: College GPA: 4.0 ACT: 32 composite (11/12 for essay, 36 for math) HS (IB program) GPA: 3.3 / weighted: 4.3 I am especially interested in Wharton business school. please give me some chances and suggestions Thank you very much more

Resolved Question: What is the best opportunity: College Admissions, Global PR/Marketing, Grad School-don't want to burn bridges?

I graduated in the spring of 2009 with a bachelor's degree in public relations and minor in international relations. While attending college I was able to work in the admissions office, which is also a form of public relations. However my coursework concentrated on pr/business. I would definately like to get a master's degree quickly, especially since I have the drive at this age to do it. I have been interviewing for quite a few jobs both in higher education and with an international pr agency. Working in admissions, I could get a master's for free from the college I work at, and at the agency, they would pay for you the master's degree. However, I already submitted 8 graduate school applications (both for a master's in international communications, and college student affairs), so I am wondering what happens if I get a full ride there. So much to think about.. What is the best job opportunity?? College admissions, a global pr firm, or going straight for a master's?? My problem is I'm not sure what I want to do exactly. I think it'd be fun to work at a college, but I also think I'd enjoy working in international public relations. I know that I want to work on the global level, but working at a college I could grow into international admissions or study abroad. Global PR there is a ton of growth in that too. I know as an end goal I'd like to be a professor of cross cultural relations. More than anything though, I just want to get out of the state that I live in. Most of the opportunities that I've been offered are in the state... Suggestions? What is the best route to take with this economy? more

Voting Question: International Student-But What University?

I'm trying to figure out what university would best suite me. I'm going to be going for business and have looked at Waitako in new zealand, and Leeds in the UK. But I'm having a tough time deciding which one to pick and if there are any better options that better suite me. I like Waitako because they have tons of sports to do and it sounds like there its a decent night life. (snowboard, surf, rock climb, wake board etc). But I still am not sure about either. So I'm open to any suggestions or advice. Thanks in advanced. *and this isn't study abroad really I plan on moving to either europe or nz and staying there for the remainder of time* :POh and I'm American, dunno if that plays a factor but just putting that out there.Haha thank you J makes me feel more comfrotoable about that. Resolved Question: Study abroad in Seoul, South Korea or Sao Paulo, Brazil?

I am a Business (Supply Chain Management) major at Arizona State University and am looking to stud abroad for 6 weeks this summer. The two programs I am looking into are: Seoul, South Korea: Korea University's International Summer Campus (ISC) serves as an international hub for academic dialogue during summer - For Korean students, it is a gateway to experience quality education that prepares them for global leadership. For International students, it is an opportunity to learn about Korea and Korean culture, politics, economy and history. ISC opens the door to globalization and increases mutual understanding among people with diverse backgrounds. ISC provides an opportunity to spend six weeks in one of Asia's most dynamic cities, while taking courses alongside Koreans and other international students (taught in English) that will fit directly into an ASU degree. Sao Paulo, Brazil: This program will focus on doing business in Brazil with a special emphasis on building cross-cultural relationships in the Brazilian context. Students will have several lectures in English from the Brazilian faculty members of IBMEC and lectures from Dr. Jane Carey of ASU. There will be visits to Brazilian companies including Unibanco and a model farm and Brazilian cultural venues in Sao Paulo. There is also an outing to Barro do Sahy which is a resort area near Sao Paulo more

Resolved Question: Is getting an international business minor worth an extra semester?

I'm a student looking to join the international business field and planned on graduating this May. I have a lot of room for extra credits this semester so I was thinking about adding a minor in international business. I can squeeze in the whole minor this semester at the cost of putting my capstone course off one more semester (summer semester). Do minors really make me more marketable or not? I have studied abroad, know French, Spanish, and Norwegian fairly well. My advisor also brought up the idea of taking most of the minor classes and just using that for my resume as an emphasis. I have been in school a little longer than some from making a large jump to a different major years back. So, do I enter the job market as soon as possible or wait it out 3 more months and hope I'm more marketable, and also worry about the costs of being a student? more

Voting Question: What is my chance of getting a U.S Study Visa (F-1)?

I am an International Graduate of Business, with a major in Marketing. I currently reside outside United States. I intend learning more about Digital Business. I do not need certifications alone. I need the degree. Currently, Digital Business is not in the curriculum of the Marketing Department or Business Administration Department of the Graduate school I wish to attend. I can only take Digital Business, as a concentration area in the department of Management Information system. With my business degree, and a major in Marketing, I applied to study management information system at a graduate school. My wish remains to concentrate on digital business. I was accepted, and now I have my I-20. I told my friends that I have been accepted into a graduate school in the U.S, and I am preparing to apply for my student Visa. They told me that since I major in Marketing, and I intend going for a Masters Degree in Management Information system (which they consideras IT related), that I would be denied the Visa. Most of them are saying thesame thing, and I have been worried ever since. The school knows my career plans, and that was why I was accepted. I am interested in the digital business aspect of the program, and not just strictly the IT degree alone. Please I need your response. Is it true that I could be denied the visa, because I majored in marketing, and now want to study Management information to specialise in digital business? Please I need quick response. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Which of these courses will give me a better chance of finding a job?

ok. I just recently graduated college with a diploma in general business which really means nothing. So I am going back to school this month and I am not sure what to study. I am thinking of specialising in something like Financial Planning (also a diploma). However I think a lot of people are graduating with degrees in the business field and someone like me with a diploma would not have much of a chance in getting a job. My other option is the Information Technology Applications and Technical Support course. But this is only a 51-week Certificate program. Since its a technical skill I probably have a better chance of getting a job after graduating. What do you guys think? This is the course description if you are interested; "The program will address fundamental skills in a number of areas including operating systems such as Windows and Linux, Health and Safety, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Electrical/Electronics, Soldering, Customer Service, Networking, Computer Maintenance, Job Search, Web Page Design, and Documentation. The graduate will be able to participate in technical conversations, install, configure, and operate standard office software applications and maintain the hardware components of office personal computers. They will be qualified to setup and maintain a standard networking system, create a full document system for tracking hardware/software and service calls, control and safety measures, and be capable of training staff. They would also learn how to design and maintain interactive web sites. In some of the program courses, students follow the curriculum from the International Computer Driving Licence program. Those students who successfully pass the ICDL examinations will receive International Computer Driving Licence Certificates from ICDL." more

Voting Question: How important is a minor when applying for jobs / grad school?

I'm double-majoring in Spanish and International Business, and considering a minor in Economics. I'm about to start my last semester. I work part-time and takes classes - to get the minor I'd need to take an extra 6 hours of classes this semester, bringing my total to 18 hours. In the past I've taken 15 hours and been able to balance the workload, but the one time I tried to take 18 I ended up dropping the extra class because I didn't have time for it all. I could, in theory, try to work a little less at my job to make up for the extra hours in class, but it would still probably be my most grueling semester in college - something I'm not interested in doing unless I know it's worth the effort. So my question is - how important is a minor when applying for jobs and, eventually, to grad school? In looking through the questions already posted here the majority of the answers seem to range from "Not important at all" to "It can help, in certain cases". So, how important is it for a student who will already have two degrees, one already from the business college? more

Resolved Question: About Boston University?

If you attended, visited, know students/alumni, live near BU, I would love to hear what you think or have heard about the school. Pros and Cons. How challenging are the classes (particularly Honors Program)? What is the environment like? Is the location good or bad (being in a huge city)? I know it's a long shot, but if anyone knows about the International Business program, particulars about that major would be greatly appreciated. Is it focused, or basically just a general business major? How are the professors (are they qualified? have they had real-world experience? etc)? I'm a high school junior looking at colleges and Boston U is on my list of potentials, so I would really appreciate any feedback from people with knowledge about the school. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: statement of purpose, please help me with it, i welcome any change, thank you!?

As an international Chinese student in the United States, I believe that I have a great deal of business, academic, social, and cultural experience that will allow me to fit in well and contribute to the international flavor of Lund University. One of my most distinguishing characteristics is the diversity of experiences I possess. I am a business student with a flair for the arts. I am a woman with technical aptitude and an interest in entreprenership. I also have a passion for traveling and understanding different cultures of the world. All these elements have given me a very broad outlook, with varying degrees of knowledge in a range of topics. I strongly believe that although some are not related directly, all these qualities will influence my graduate work. My Business degree has given a strong foundation to my analytical skills since business issues research involves a lot of complex and intricate relationships among parties who are aiming at different goals, and the application of basic math, communication and psychology skills. Over the past four years in college, I have been working part-time with my own business, Shining SIM Card, set up when I just became a college student. I was the president of student government and am also an active member with SSE - Siemens Solar Energy. I have assisted my father in his project to supervise and monitor the process in his company during my breaks. More than what I have studied in school and college, it has been these experiences that have shaped the person that I am today. I believe that this unique blend of experiences has made me a woman with an original point of view. This blend has given me a broader perspective to and a good understanding of life and a goal to aim for. Among other things, I have this diversity of experience to offer Lund University. My most substantial accomplishment has been the success of Shining SIM Card that I managed in Dalian, China, where I have been working as a manager since 2005. Entreprenership, as a field, had always fascinated me right from my middle school days, and being an entrepreneur to contribute its utilities to mankind is the life long dream and career objective I persue, it is worthy to devote energy and commitment to found my own business and lead it success. Shining SIM Card, my first big step on my enterprise career, compared with prior experience, grew up from only one employee to fifteen, the main consumers from one campus were enlarged to other 6 big universities and also some small schools of the local city when I graduated. Most of my customers were college students, as a student myself, it was easy for me to do surveies, to know the popular tastes, and the most impressing way to promote the business with very limited resources. The advertisement form developped from hand writing poster on wall to big colorful advertisement scroll and products propaganda for freshmen annually. The goal for advertisement is let 60% of the students consider my products first when they are about to purchase, and let them to introduce us to the rest 40%. Also I had an online sale shop for the convenience of customers, which has been in operation for 5 years. Run my own business required me to believe in myself and in what I thought was good for the company. I had to take a pro-active approach, take the initiative and play a leadership role in motivating people and executing events to completion. A good manager is one who can figure out where problem lies and may happen, deal with it effectively by involving all the members of the company and improve the overall culture of the company. The problems I saw at Shining SIM Card had to be resolved to sustain the company. The fact that I was able to pull off this task alone has boosted my confidence in my abilities. The business climate has never been more friendly toward entrepreneurship than it is today. However, enterprise and creativity alone are rarely sufficient to bring an entrepreneur's ideas to fruition. Though, venturing off into Entrepreneurship is a challenge, one which I think some formal education can help solidify and provide a stronger foundation for success. So that leads me to my application for an entreprenership program at Lund University, and I wish to develop an idea based on research from Lund University, during the master year. more
