The Seven Sins on the Big Screen

Producers Moritz Borman and Peter Graves have licensed film rights to the novel "The Seven Sins: The Tyrant Ascending" from Las Vegas entrepreneur Fabrizio Boccardi's King Midas World Entertainment, says The Hollywood Reporter. Jon Land's action thriller, published last month by Tom Doherty Associates' Forge imprint, centers on a Las Vegas casino owner, Michael "The Tyrant" Tiranno, the adopted son of an Italian crime lord who is called upon to defend the gambling mecca from terrorist attacks. Land has said that the character is loosely inspired by Boccardi's life story and is designed as the first of a series of James Bond-like adventure tales. Borman would produce, with Graves serving as executive producer.

Andrew Keen on New Media: Kids with cameras lead the way in giving

Jason McCabe Calacanis, web 2.0 entrepreneur, A-list blogger and tech trendsetter, has retired from the blogging game.

Calacanis is the first major league blogger to hang up his keyboard, in what may be an augury for the next chapter of the digital revolution.

"It's with a heavy heart, and much consideration, that today I would like to announce my retirement from blogging," Calacanis wrote on his blog, calacanis.com, on 11 July. Calacanis, it seems, has grown tired of the radically democratised nature of the blogosphere, with its incessant backbiting and all-too-public nastiness.

Calacanis said on his final post: "I'm looking for something more acoustic, something more authentic and something more private.". If openness was the mantra of web 2.0, Calacanis's bombshell suggests that exclusivity might define the next internet age. more

Resolved Question: How possible is it to close down a bad business?

I live in the Bay Area of California, as well as my daughter. Recently, my daughter walked into a cellular store with her old [diconnected] phone asking for a plan with unlimited calls, texts, and web service. The rep offered MetroPCS service, but my daughter's old phone was not a MetroPCS phone, therefore she would have to purchase one. Since her phone costed her plenty and it would be a waste, she asked if there was any way to use "it" with a plan that covered unlimited calls, text, and web service. The rep then offered a sim card by Simple Mobile, which states on the package UNLIMITED NATIONWIDE TALK, UNLIMITED US/GLOBAL TEXT, MOBILE WEB, EMAIL, MMS, SOCIAL NETWORKS, INTERNATIONAL LONG DISTANCE, NO CONTRACTS, NO CREDIT CHECKS. Now... supposedly, she needed to "choose a package", but the rep didn't tell her that part... and altho "I" personally know better than to accept something without reading the package (&/or pamphlet) to its completion, and question anything I "don't" understand, she didn't do so because the rep did all the talking and convinced her this particular chip would do what she wanted (instead of explaining to her that it merely served for "activation purposes"). 3 days later, my daughter's web service was cancelled, so she phoned Simple Mobile, and at this point they explained how it works. My daughter explained to "that rep" exactly how the whole conversation & thus sale actually went. The rep told her that if she was unsatisfied with the chip, she needed to go back to the store and request a refund based on the fact that the store rep didn't explain the functions of the chip correctly. My daughter went back to the store, and the rep (who obviously didn't speak English) denied anything my daughter requested, including a refund, an exchange, or even an explanation. Since Spanish is my 1st language, my daughter then asked me to accompany her, which I did. The rep was very rude to me, did not give any explanation about anything, simply cut me off telling me to do whatever I wanted about the situation. He walked away from me to help another customer, and I asked him to please continue our conversation as we were not done yet. I also asked him not to be rude to me (because he continued to be) because we were customers as well. He simply kept telling me he didn't care, and that he didn't care what we did about it either. I asked him for a business card and the name of the owner of the establishment, and he gave me one, telling me the owner was his brother. He then "shooed" us away with his hand, and I told him I could very well have the business closed due to his unprofessionalism and rudeness to me, especially in front of other customers. What do you Yahooligans think? Should I call his brother? It's been about a week, because I needed to "cool off", as in the past I would've grabbed him by the collar and decked him. But I know we get nowhere that way, in fact, I'd get in trouble is all! So, I decided to wait a few days for the situation to cool off. However, he wasn't rude when he "took" my daughter's $80... and he should be well informed about each of the products he sells! How possible is it to close down a bad business? Thx! more

Resolved Question: Please provide me with some advice on ordering online by transferring money directly through PayPal?

Someone explain the PayPal thing to me? I have to send someone some money directly through PayPal to company? I want to buy some products from MNPCTECH.com (computer parts) It says on the website: "We Accept International Orders! International orders cannot be processed in store, you must email us. Include item description, size and quanity in your email International payments by Paypal Only. First Class mail can take 7 - 24 business days. No tracking capability." So I emailed them with a list of products I require, They replied with: "Hello, Here is your item total with shipping. You must send payment in U.S. Dollars via Paypal 1x PC Cable Sleeve Kit, Blue @ 9.99 1x 6ft u-channel @ 2.99 1x 120mm wire fan grill @ 2.99 2x set of 8/32 - 5/8" SS fasteners / nuts @ 2.99 = $5.98 Subtotal = $22.95 Shipping & Handling = $13.75 Total = $36.70 First Class typically takes 7 - 24 business days. No tracking capability with First Class. Send total of $36.70 in U.S. dollars via Paypal to this email address, "sales@mnpctech.com" Please list the above item details I listed in Paypal notes. International orders are typically processed and shipped within 1 - 3 business days after receiving payment monday - friday. Notify me asap when you've sent your payment by replying to this email after making payment. Otherwise your order may take several days before it's shipped." So do I have to create a PayPal account, then "send" $36.70 to "sales@mnpctech.com" through PayPal? Will that transfer the money from my account to theirs? Will I have proper proof that I have paid or is this a dodgy money transfer? Should I go ahead? These specialist parts are hard to find in the UK. THANKS! more

Resolved Question: Job titles for entry level jobs with a BBA in Finance?

I graduated in December with a Bachelor of Business Administration. I double majored in Finance & International Business. I am trying to look for a entry level job related to finance and/or accounting, but I am having trouble which job titles to look for. Most positions I find required at least two years of experience. I would appreciate if you let me know what job titles can I look for an entry level position. PS. My job experience consists in two officers positions in students' clubs, an internship at Merrill Lynch, and part-time job experience as administrative assistant in an university, and managerial assistant in a small hardware store in my country (Colombia). I went to college in Miami, FL but relocated to Northern NJ (25 minutes from New York City) a couple months ago, so I am a little lost to what kind of jobs I should look for. In advance, thank you all for your help. more

Resolved Question: Should I just run away from it all?

Caution, this is a rant: I'm 22 years old in my last semester of college. I just want to be done already. I'm studying Business and International Relations which don't really have an interest in..I guess I did at one time..but not really anymore. I don't really want to do anything and i don't really have a direction in my life. I'm thinking that when I graduate in May, I should move somewhere far far away. I signed a lease with a friend last month. Last week, her boyfriend basically moved in for an unknown period of time. He quit his job and does have some upcoming interviews. So it's not like he's not trying to get another job. Her bf ate some of my stuff..but then went out to the grocery store and got me replacement food. So he is trying to not get on my bad side. He does attempt to clean up after himself even though his stuff is in the common area and bathroom. I didn't sign up for living with him. I have to constantly hear them bicker and I basically stay in my room. I'm fed up with the snow, my living situation and school. more

Voting Question: I want to start a small business and I need some advice...?

There is an empty store on a popular street in my town, which is next to a university. Can you offer good ideas for kinds of stores to open there? And how much will opening this kind of store cost? On this street there is currently various international restaurants, FedEx printing, two coffee shops, a club, a pizza place/bar, a book store, and a jewelry store. All of these are currently not options for me, as there would be too much competition. Thanks in advance! more

Voting Question: I ordered some Uggs from Nordstrom for delivery to UK. Any one else used this service? how long did it take?

Ordered Ugg Australia Ultimate Tall Braid in Black from Nordstrom and used their international delivery option since I live in the UK and am unable to get these boots anywhere in the UK in Black, even in Ugg flagship stores. Just wondering if anyone had ever ordered anything from Nordstrom overseas and how long delivery actually took. On their site it says delivery is 8-15 business days, which is not very specific. Resolved Question: How do I ask someone if...?

I am 20 and never had a girlfriend. I have no experience with girls. Some people could say I was desperate but the truth is I am far from desperate because if all else fails, I will take up to $50,000 and buy myself a girlfriend off the international human trafficking market. The Russians are the best suppliers of quality girls. I want to make an effort to get an actual girlfriend instead of resorting to desperate and illicit methods but don't know how. I never had success with girls at my HS, and now being in college with it almost over, and not having a girlfriend here either it is horrible. I'm not into the "love game" people play to get with a girl and I do not compete. If a girl wants to walk out of a relationship, I would not care because I know there would be others who would appreciate me. Without the ability to date peers and coworkers, and all the online dating websites being Bull$#!t, how could someone ask a random girl within their age range out if they never met before. Like, a girl at a beach, or sitting at a cafe, or someone in a store or a waitress? It seems I'm more business oriented, I like to stick to plans and methods, and take things formally. Like, I do not know what to do when it comes to relationships. I know how it should be in theory and according to written methods but that isn't the case. How can I talk to a random girl somewhere and ask her if she'd like to maybe hook up sometime? more

Resolved Question: Where in the Northeast should I live?

I'm looking to get some ideas of cities/towns I should research to make a possible move to. I'm 27 and single and would like to move somewhere that I can afford to purchase my first home. I don't want to live in the boonies, I need to live somewhere that is no more than a half hour drive from a decent mall and less than 10 minutes to the necessity stores -- grocery stores, Home Depot/Lowe's, Target/Wal-Mart, etc. I don't mind the snow (as a matter of fact, I love it!) and I'm going to be starting my own graphic design/letterpress business out of my home in whatever town I move to. A decent arts community would be a plus, though not required. I'd also like to live within an hour's drive to an International Airport. And I rely heavily on my car...I don't like relying on public transportation to get me where I need to be. I'd like to be as close as possible to friends and family living in Upstate NY, Northern VT, Central/Eastern PA and New Jersey. I currently live in Frederick, Maryland and I like the proximity to shopping and DC/Baltimore from here...but housing prices are ridiculous and not affordable for a single person and I think that people are generally unfriendly here. Ugandan refugee turns hotel soap to hope Nearly two decades after he arrived in this country, Ugandan Derreck Kayongo is still bowled over by one subtle display of American wealth: the endless array of soaps available in stores. In his African homeland, the cost of soap is out of reach for many, often with tragic consequences. In 2004, the World Health Organization found roughly 15 percent of deaths among Ugandan children under age 5 resulted from diarrheal diseases, many of which could be prevented through hand sanitation. Now America's bountiful soap bars have prompted Kayongo to launch the Global Soap Project, an effort to help his country's poorest - one used bar of hotel soap at a time. An Atlanta-based anti-poverty advocate, Kayongo has collected several tons of lightly used soap bars under a plan to melt them down, sterilize them and reshape the soap for shipment to refugees in Uganda to help curb disease. For Uganda's destitute, soap is a luxury. "Most people find it very hard to spend money on something like soap which could actually help them prevent diseases," Kayongo said. A bar of soap can run 500 Ugandan shillings - about 10 American cents - on a continent where many refugees have a dollar to live on daily. Cleaning up with used soap sounds, well, dirty. But Kayongo said soaps will be separated by hotel brand and gently washed to remove makeup and other surface dirt. Next, bars will go into a high-temperature oven where they will melt and transform into a soapy, sterile, slurry. Kayongo said the mixture will go into molds to harden and emerge as large bars of soap. "All it needs is just cleaning and re-melting and remolding," he said. Soap for charity Each day, in millions of American hotel rooms, the cleaning staff replaces soap and other toiletries. Patrick Maher, a consultant to the American Hotel & Lodging Association, said hotels usually throw away used soap. But he said nonprofits have begun stepping up to recycle soap for charitable purposes. "It's one of the new things this year," Maher said. One such charity, Florida-based Clean the World, says it has collected about 17,000 pounds of used soap since February for distribution in impoverished countries worldwide. For the Global Soap Project, Kayongo says he has gathered 10,000 pounds of used hotel soap from 60 hotels in Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. Hotels collect lightly used bars which they place in bins. One of Kayongo's 10 volunteers takes the bars to a donated warehouse near Atlanta that he's using. Kayongo's own family had once thrived off his father's business making soaps and running a printing press in Uganda. But Kayongo said they went from being members of the middle class to refugees, losing everything under the harsh rule of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. The family fled to Kenya, where Kayongo said life without basics became the norm. Now Kayongo wants to give other refugees a small item that can make a big difference. He plans to send off his first shipment in late October. Kayongo, a senior advocacy field coordinator for CARE International, has committed about $5,000 of his own money toward the $13,000 cost to send the soap and is seeking donations to make up the rest. CARE International, a global anti-poverty group, is not sponsoring the project. The luxury of soap Since June, just one Ritz-Carlton hotel in Atlanta's Buckhead neighborhood has turned over 3,000 pounds of soap which otherwise would have gone into the trash. "When I heard Derreck speak about it, I thought it sounded really easy and why haven't we been doing this all along?" said Olivia Brown, a manager at the hotel. Kayongo got the idea back in the mid '90s. He'd recently arrived in America and when he settled into his hotel, Kayongo was surprised to find packages of soap. He used the bars, but was confused the next day when he found they'd been replaced. "This went on for two or three days," said Kayongo, who finally called his father back in Africa and chuckled about it. The men talked about how the soap could be melted down and reused. Kayongo sat on the idea for a few years, until his father recently brought it back up. "If you live on a dollar a day," Kayongo said, "what are the chances you spend even one cent of that dollar on buying a luxury like soap?" more

Resolved Question: How much swine flu infested illegal poultry is entering into the US b/c of Obamas laxed conditions on customs?

Picking their way through a refrigerator at the back of a Chinese grocery store off a piazza, the agents found their quarry: bags of duck feet. This followed a similar raid at a Milan warehouse a few months ago that yielded three million packages of chicken meat smuggled from China. There is increasing evidence that a thriving international trade in smuggled poultry — including live birds, chicks and meat — is helping spread bird flu, experts say. Poultry smuggling is a huge business that poses a unique threat: The (A)H5N1 bird flu virus is robust enough to survive not just in live birds but also in frozen meat, feathers, bones and even on cages, though it dies with cooking. more

Resolved Question: Why Do We Need Cars At All?

Before WWII, very few Americans owned cars. Cities were dense, walkable, and well-connected with electric trolleys. MUCH less energy was spent on the simple act of getting around. Our national train system was the envy of the world, so people could travel to most destinations without a car and businesses could ship merchandise without the need for trucks. Once again, MUCH less energy was spent for travel and shipping. We now live in a society where you almost HAVE to own a car to function. Car companies dumped the cost of road building and maintenance on us to keep this system running. Retailers have dumped the cost of shipping/delivery on us as consumers. We have to buy a car, maintain it, insure it and fuel it just to go to work, school, church and the grocery store. It makes no sense. We could do all of these things without cars, save ourselves the money, and enjoy better health and air quality. Sprawling suburbs are directly correlated with growing rates of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Kids can't walk to school or any other civic function anymore. I've heard it said that corporations such as Wal-Mart require this living arrangement, calling it an "economy of scale". Well, cities can be scaled up as well as out, and logically, why should we foot the bill to keep Wal-Mart in business? Why do we need cars? Why not highly-efficient mass-transit, biking and walking (like many international cities)? If you feel it's because of "the market", please explain why most American cities have zoning laws that prevent walkable, car-free neighborhoods from being built. Please explain why car-free environments such as Disneyland or Venice are so popular. I want to know why we really NEED cars (not WANT them). more

Resolved Question: Do you plan to boycott or support Whole Foods in light of what the boss said about 0bama?

Monday, August 24, 2009 Boycotting the Boycotters (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong) Rick Watts, 49, protests outside a Whole Foods store in West Hollywood, Calif., Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009. The protest took place after John Mackey, the CEO of Whole Foods Market, wrote an op-ed piece for the Wall Street Journal about health care reform. John Mackey - the founder, CEO and marketing genius behind Whole Foods - finds himself in an organic, unsustainable mess with his carefully cultivated affluent, liberal customer base after penning an Op-Ed in the Wall Street Journal titled, "The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare." For starters, Mr. Mackey opens with a line from known-liberal-allergen Margaret Thatcher that features the dreaded "S" word: "The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money." Then he goes on to provide eight sensible free-market solutions gleaned from his company's well-regarded employee health care program. Mr. Mackey, a free-market libertarian, is now at the mercy of an unforgiving grass-roots mob intent on destroying his company. More than 25,000 people have signed on to a Whole Foods boycott on Facebook. "Whole Foods has built its brand with the dollars of deceived progressives," the online petition reads. "Let them know your money will no longer go to support Whole Foods' anti-union, anti-health insurance reform, right-wing activities." A complementary Web site, WholeBoycott.com, features unintentionally comical video testimonials from aggrieved former customers. The mainstream media have picked up on the story and fanned the flames. The success of Whole Foods is largely built on Mr. Mackey's understanding of the liberal mind. It wants the good life - but with instant absolution for the sin of conspicuous consumption. Whole Foods is marketing at its best. Iconography and slogans throughout the store - not unlike those Barack Obama used to win the presidency - tell the shopper they are saving the planet in large and small ways. The product is so good even conservatives and skeptics are willing to play along. But Mr. Mackey missed the key ingredient of modern liberalism: intolerance to the ideas of nonliberals. And this miscalculation may prove to be devastating to his multibillion-dollar business. Everywhere one looks these days, the intolerance of self-avowed liberals is on display. Especially since Mr. Obama came to power. The purportedly open-minded and empathic among us who now run everything - save for NASCAR and Nashville - openly wage war against those who dare disagree. Witness Steny Hoyer and Nancy Pelosi's joint-penned editorial in USA Today in which the House's two top Democrats describe those publicly questioning Mr. Obama's proposed health care system overhaul as "un-American." One need not go back too far in the political time machine to recall a time when the same people were claiming that the term "un-American" was being tossed at liberals for opposing the Iraq war, and that Republicans were stifling free speech. Examples were rarely, if ever, given. It just was. And we were told this was a very, very bad thing. The Dixie Chicks brilliantly used this sob line to become a Rolling Stone magazine cover staple, a blue-state crossover and an international cause celebre. A chorus line of would-be liberal celebrity martyrs took a similar marketing tack proclaiming McCarthyism was again afoot - as conservative Hollywood kept its collective mouth shut knowing that support for President Bush or the war was an instant career-killer. Yet amid the cries of "dissent is patriotic" - a phrase seen on the bumper stickers of cars in the Whole Foods parking lot - the antiwar movement grew and grew, unfettered by the war's supporters or by the party in power. As the Hollywood Left churned out antiwar film screeds, it was creating a narrative of its victimhood as it victimized Mr. Bush and his administration with the false accusation that dissenters were being persecuted. But now that they are in power, Democrats are brazenly wielding punitive weaponry against dissenting Americans and are using the power of the state to shut up citizens. The Democratic leadership - and its friends in the mainstream media - seem determined to brand opposition to the president's legislative agenda as illegitimate, even racist in origin. Individuals and grass-roots organizations are helping the statists' cause by advocating boycotts and other means of stifling dissent. The strategy is clear: Intimidate people from speaking up or from attending public protests by telegraphing that anyone can be made a demon for standing up and exercising basic, constitutional rights. To call these people hypocrites would be a grave insult to those who fail to live up to their own standards. Liberalism has never been ab more

Voting Question: America, The right to profile?

Shah Rukh Khan, Apparently an International Movie Star in India was taken aside at Newark's Liberty International Airport on Friday for Routine Questioning. Well, this sparked an uprising throughout India and atleast one American Flag was burned. I honestly dont get why these people are so full of hatred. Heres what it looks like to me, Foreigners can bomb our World Trade Center and Pentagon and crash a plane full of Americans into a field and Murder near 4,000 People and expect us not to question or profile potential threats at the airports. We operate Routine Questioning at the airport and it causes an uproar when a supposed Star is at the helm of questioning and the American Flag is Burnt. after 9/11/2001, America the right to profile? If your like me, you wont give these guys any business at the convenient stores this month and let them suffer for burning the American Flag. Im going to find an Ameircan store each time to buy my fuel and soft drink and overlook or just go in and go out of a foreign store and not let them earn my American Dollar. Many of you differ your opinion and thats what I want to hear, what is your opinion.Joe, thats some relevant insight, If I was to burn an Indian flag though, it would be India. I wouldnt burn it in the comfort of my Country, I'd burn it in the Country that the Flag Represents and the fact of the matter is, A Potential burning of the American flag in America is worthy of Death by whoever deems to do so. But lets move past the flag burning because it was cowardice on India's part. Rasputin and Asd make good and valid points to a degree, but Asd, Every American flying in there own Country has to go through security checks and special scanning that is almost like being stripped naked before boarding a plane and Americans did nothing to Our Own Country to deserve to suffer the security issues, but, we do. We do, so all people weither American or here on a visa, and even illegals can be in A Country of Promise that is Terror Free. Does that mean we lose some liberty for a short time due to Al Quaeda's Mass Murders? Yeah, religion isnt an issue, PEOPLE are. more

Resolved Question: What is your attitude concerning tax-exempt foundations?

It is common knowledge that the super-rich of America's corporate world avoid taxation by channelling their money into tax-empt foundations. David Allen Rivera gives us a clearer picture of what is going on in his book "Final Warning." "According to Rep. Wright Patman, in a report to the 87th Congress, it is because of the existence of foundations, that "ONLY ONE-THIRD OF THE INCOME OF THE NATION IS ACTUALLY TAXED." "Before 1900, there were only 18 foundations; from 1910-19, there were 76; during the 1920's, 173; the 1930's, 288; the 1940's, 1,638; and during the 1950's, there were 2,839 foundations." "United Press International (UPI) reported on July 19, 1969, that the top 596 foundations had an INCOME THAT WAS TWICE THE NET EARNINGS OF THE COUNTRY'S 50 LARGEST COMMERCIAL BANKING INSTITUTIONS." (That's correct. Read that last statement one more time.) "The worst offenders in this racket are the openly Communist Rockefeller family. Among their major holdings are: Chase Manhattan Bank, American Telephone & Telegraph (AT & T), Eastman Kodak, IBM, General Electric, Texas Instruments, Xerox, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, Monsanto Chemical, Aluminum Co. of America (Alcoa), Armour, Bethlehem Steel, Chrysler, DuPont, General Motors, International Paper, Polaroid, Sears and Roebuck, Standard Oil of California (Chevron), Standard Oil of New York (Mobil), Standard Oil of Indiana, U.S. Steel, International Basic Economy Corp., International Harvester, Quaker Oats, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, Itek, Federated Department Stores, Walgreen Stores, Transcontinental Gas Pipeline, Consolidated Edison, Anaconda Copper Co., General Foods, Pan American World Airways, Colgate-Palmolive, E. I. du Pont de Nemours, W. R. Grace, Inc., Corning Glass Works, Owens Corning Fiberglass, Cummins Engine, Hewlett-Packard, R. R. Donnelly and Son, Dow Chemical, Teledyne, Inc., Warner-Lambert, Westinghouse, International Telephone and Telegraph (IT & T), Motorola, S. S. Kresge, Texaco, National Cash Register, Avon, American Home Products, Delta Airlines, Braniff Airlines, Northwest Airlines, United Airlines, and Burlington Industries." Yet they pay no taxes. The rationale of such scheisters is that foundations are devoted to philanthropic work. Here are examples of the causes endorsed by such foundations. "The Rockefeller Foundation provided over $50,000 to fund the Building America textbook series, which played up Marxism, and sought to destroy "traditional concepts of American government." Over 100 communist organizations contributed material, including the writings of over 50 communist writers. The California Legislature said that the books contained "purposely distorted references favoring Communism..." The Foundation contributed money to the pro-communist New School for Social Research in New York City, and funded projects for the communist-staffed Southern Christian Leadership Conference, led by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Rep. Cox said that the Rockefeller Foundation has "been used to finance individuals and organizations whose business it has been to get communism into private and public schools of the country, to talk down to America, and play up Russia..." The Foundation also funded the Kinsey Report, which heralded a new era of sexual immorality." Resolved Question: How badly do your dreams clash before it becomes a real problem?

I've been trying to get my career going for a while. What I do requires an international airport and a diverse business community (ie, large city). My husband is a professor in a specialized area. He's been on the market getting only one-year appointments for the past six years. We've moved around and put off children. Last year we lived separately. Now we are only an hour from KKK headquarters and there are no jobs here except working the food court at the university or tending the cash register at the local hardware store. The lack of choices in my life is getting very difficult. more

Resolved Question: Guillermo's furniture store scenario?

Guillermo’s Furniture Store Scenario While many people know that Sonora, Mexico is a beautiful vacation spot, it is also a large furniture manufacturing location in North America. Guillermo Navallez made furniture for years near his Sonoran home. The area had a good supply of timber for the variety of tables and chairs produced by his company. Labor was also relatively inexpensive. In addition, he priced his handcrafted products at a slight premium for the quality they represented. Overall, life was good for Guillermo. All of that was true until late in the 1990s when two forces combined to cause a large dent in his business. First, a new competitor from overseas entered the furniture market. Using a high-tech approach, this foreign competition provided furniture to exact specifications and did so with rock-bottom prices. Second, the sleepy communities in Sonora woke up. One of the largest retailers in the nation’s headquarters was just a few miles down the road, and its influence had expanded considerably. With inexpensive housing, mild weather, beautiful scenery, un-congested roads, a new International Airport, and plenty of development, an influx of people and jobs raised the cost of labor substantially. Guillermo watched his profit margins shrink as prices fell and costs rose. After doing some research on his competition to see how they are handling these changes, it is clear that many of them are consolidating into larger organizations by merger or acquisition. Being independent, Guillermo does not relish the idea of being acquired by a larger competitor and then retired as the new company squeezes every peso it could out of the overhead costs. Guillermo also is not looking to expand his management responsibilities by acquiring another organization either; that could affect his time with his family in ways that he will not enjoy. Guillermo then spent some time looking at the foreign competition and their high-tech solution. Essentially, their production utilizes a computer controlled laser lathe to produce exact cuts in the wood. Highly automated, the plant in Norway uses very little labor as robots even perform the precise movement and assembly functions. The cost of the technology is immense, as is the reduction in the labor needed for production. In addition, the production can move between products quickly, and it runs on a 24-hour basis, as the shift-differentials are more than offset by the reduction in labor. Converting his production to this model would be expensive, but he saw how he could also decrease dramatically his production costs. When talking to some of his distributors about their wants, he had another idea that appealed to him. A second competitor, currently operating only in Norway, has been looking for channels to distribute in North America. This second potential rival, however, did not operate furniture outlets favoring instead to rely on chain distributors. Perhaps Guillermo could coordinate his existing distributor network and essentially become a representative for this other manufacturer. While he may retain some of the high end custom work, he could move his company from primarily manufacturing to primarily distribution. Guillermo also has a patented process for creating a coating for his furniture. In producing this product, the process first creates a common flame-retardant, and upon further processing, the coating is complete and stain resistant. There is market for the flame retardant, but not as much of a market for the finished coating. There is another product that Guillermo could buy to apply to his furniture as well that would add the same amount of value for the furniture. # Read the Guillermo’s Furniture Store Scenario. # Write no more than a 700-word paper explaining the finance concepts found in the readings and how they relate to the context of the scenario. more

I need to send a copy of my income tax return to my family abroad. They told me to fax it international to a local store over there, but I don't know that's safe. I was thinking about scanning the papers and converting them to pdf format, then attach them to an email so that they can open it and print it. What stores offer this service? By the way, I don't have a scanner, that's why I'm looking for a business that offers this service. more
