BUSINESS IN BRIEF 27/5
At a workshop entitled “Opportunities for Vietnamese businesses to list on the US Stock Exchange" in Hanoi on May 26, a representative of the SSC said the commission will finalise new legal foundations, invest in market infrastructure and enhance cooperation with other regional management agencies on information exchange and supervision work.
Many Vietnamese businesses has shown keen interest in listing in foreign countries such as Singapore and the US , Head of the SSC's International Cooperation Department Nguyen Ngoc Canh said.
The businesses see an opportunity to advance their international reputation and mobilise lucrative sources of capital.
When listed in foreign markets, the Vietnamese businesses would need to abide by international standards in capital, investors, expenses, accounting systems and information transparency regulations. more

As the founder of Kreager Towing Inc., Richard C. Kreager is remembered by loved ones as a man dedicated to his business and community.

New Research Highlights the Business Benefits of Continuously
IT governance, risk and compliance (IT GRC) is about striking an appropriate balance between business reward and risk. The maturity of IT GRC practices and capabilities are having a direct impact on the fortunes of organizations.
Primary benchmark research conducted by the IT Policy Compliance Group shows that the way to improve business results and reduce financial risk, loss and expense is to increase or enhance the competencies, practices and capabilities governing the use and disposition of IT resources. The report, which incorporates responses from more than 2,600 global organizations, measures the impact that improvements to data protection, regulatory compliance and IT service level resiliency have had on business results, including: customer satisfaction, customer retention, revenue, expenses and profits. more
Brunner gets few changes by panel
Among the proposed changes in the bill, which now goes to the full Senate: Bipartisan teams must transport ballots and machine memory cards from the polls, and absentee ballots postmarked by Election Day can be counted if they are received up to the 11th day after an election.
But the bill also includes provisions that Brunner didn't seek, including allowing the secretary of state to issue only temporary directives 90 days before and 40 days after an election, and requiring public review before any permanent order.
Brunner caused a stir among some election officials earlier this year when she ordered counties using touch-screen voting machines to make paper ballots available at the polls, and election officials also have complained about last-minute directives from former Secretary J. more
Spy chief warns business to tighten IT security
The head of ASIO has urged business to assess IT security because individuals and nations are targeting the private sector to steal sensitive information.
"The widespread use of the internet in government and business presents opportunities for state agencies to gain covert access to information," Paul O'Sullivan, the director-general of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), told the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce in Sydney today.
"And a range of non-state actors — hackers, criminals and other foreign entities, acting independently or on behalf of groups, networks, or states — are engaged in nefarious cyber-activities, whether for profit, to cause damage, test for vulnerabilities or acquire sensitive information.
"Such actors are targeting business and government alike."
O'Sullivan warned the attacks were not always obvious, mentioning the use of so-called trojan horse attacks where a seemingly innocuous piece of software is attached to an email and then makes its way into a computer network. more

OK here is the problem with US government, it’s corrupted to the bone with greasy corporate lobbyist’s money who typically line politician’s pockets with money to turn them into their personal political puppets. That is no surprise right? Amazingly we Americans seem to be able to accept that our political system is heavily influenced by big business. We all know that when a political candidate gets huge campaign contributions from a corporation, or co-op of corporations, he/she will ALWAYS serve the needs of their campaign contributors over the needs of their actual constituents. (Corporate campaign contributors vs. voters) A perfect example is all the pork barrel spending we see politicians attempting to keep tagging onto recent Health Care reform bills. This proves as a perfect example of how corporate interests are put ABOVE the taxpayers who actually fund all these programs. We pay the bills, so why don't we get to control how OUR tax dollars are spent? Because corporate lobbyists are who put politicians into office through campaign finance. This is nothing new, but I think I have a solution to fix this rotting system, partially, and without being labeled as a 'socialist' by regulating how private enterprise conducts its day-to-day business. So here is my solution, since we won’t EVER get big businesses greedy hands out of our tax dollars, we can at least curb these ravenous money vultures, and this is how: ALL corporations have one primary objective; to generate profit for their shareholders, at all costs. This is accepted behavior in business these days, even if it means stepping on the tax-payer’s toes and screwing us out of OUR OWN MONEY to accomplish their primary objective, to return a profit to their owners. That is just the reality of business as usual here in the U.S. We can’t tell the corporations what to do because they would have PR firms screaming 'Socialism!' within seconds. But what we U.S. citizens need to remember is that corporations founded here in the USA in the early 1900’s like Ford, Dow Chemical, and Exxon-Mobil were created here, but these are NO LONGER owned by solely Americans. A majority of investors are now foreigners. Most of the best performers in the U.S. stock market have a higher percentage of foreign investors than U.S. investors. People like the Saudi Royal family, the Chinese, and MANY rich Europeans own a higher percentage of these corporations now, and THEY are the ones profiting off of U.S. corporate success. These U.S. headquartered corporations are not owned 100% by U.S. citizens, and outsource most of their work to the Chinese, so why are they treated with the rights of a U.S. citizen? They don’t deserve free speech in OUR country. We Americans should NOT allow ANY corporation which has over 50% foreign investor ownership to have ANY influence on our political system. When we allow these foreign-owned/U.S. based corporations, like Exxon-Mobil, to legally corrupt our political system through political lobbying, we are allowing international investors steal our tax dollars so they can earn more money per share. MY SOLUTION; we need new laws to pass to curtail corporate lobbyists. All corporations, organizations, or businesses who want to donate political campaign contributions should be REQUIRED to be 100% transparent. All the investors, stock-holders, owners can remain anonymous, except for their citizenship status and exact number of shares owned. Any corporation that is owned 50% or more by foreign investors should lose ALL rights to lobby our government. We cannot let the communist Chinese or Arab oil barons to affect our government any longer. Any PAC or hedge funds that donate campaign contributions should also have to report all their current clients/contributors and their citizenship status. The only time corporations, hedge funds, and PAC's should be allowed to contribute to our political system if they can prove they are owned OVER 50% by American citizens, if not, then they should be blackballed from our political system to prevent foreigners from corrupting our political system and steal our tax dollars. Foreigners should have ZERO influence on OUR AMERICAN way of life. So we can’t pass any laws regulating business, per se. We just go over big businesses head. We need to pass strict laws to regulate our political system and determine EXACTLY where and who exactly campaign contributions come from. Right now we only see vague data outlining which companies or industries as a whole contribute to individual politicians, but not who owns these companies making the contributions. We need to control which lobbyists are able to grease the pockets of political puppets. If they are not American owned (50% or more) then they need to keep out of our government. Otherwise we might as well let Kim Jong-il or Fidel Castro to provide campaign contributions to U.S. candidates running for office. Do you think the American people would approve of communists or s moreVoting Question: Economics: Corporations, Mergers, and Other Organizations?

I'm currently getting my MBA, and it's about that time to start applying for a Ph.D. program as I'm graduating soon. I have a BS in Biology & Chemistry, a general MBA, and was originally planning to get the Ph.D. in Healthcare Administration. Well, now I'm having second thoughts. I am now thinking of getting a Ph.D. in International Business. I would love to work for an international non-profit company, top picks being the World Health Organization or the International Justice Mission (rescues women from the sex slave trade, etc). The reason I'd like a Ph.D. is because I do enjoy research, although it's not what I want to do for a living, and I feel it would prove to future employers that I am dedicated and go the extra mile. Plus, I'd like the option of becoming a professor if I need something to fall back on. Dilemma- I've read a lot about degrees (mostly bachelors) in international policy, etc, and hear that it doesn't get you a job. With my BS, MBA, Ph.D. combination, would I get a job? The job of my dreams? moreResolved Question: What is your opinion on this? Global Currency?
kinda scary.. Head of IMF Proposes New Reserve Currency IMF's Strauss-Kahn suggests IMF may one day provide global reserve asset By HARRY DUNPHY Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON February 26, 2010 (AP) The Associated Press Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the International Monetary Fund, suggested Friday the organization might one day be called on to provide countries with a global reserve currency that would serve as an alternative to the U.S. dollar. "That day has not yet come, but I think it is intellectually healthy to explore these kinds of ideas now," he said in a speech on the future mandate of the 186-nation Washington-based lending organization. Strauss-Kahn said such an asset could be similar to but distinctly different from the IMF's special drawing rights, or SDRs, the accounting unit that countries use to hold funds within the IMF. It is based on a basket of major currencies. He said having other alternatives to the dollar "would limit the extent to which the international monetary system as a whole depends on the policies and conditions of a single, albeit dominant, country." Strauss-Kahn, a former finance minister of France, said that during the recent global financial crisis, the dollar "played its role as a safe haven" asset, and the current international monetary system demonstrated resilience. "The challenge ahead is to find ways to limit the tension arising from the high demand for precautionary reserves on the one hand and the narrow supply of reserves on the other," he said. Several countries, including China and Russia, have called for an alternative to the dollar as a reserve currency and have suggested using the IMF's internal accounting unit. Strauss-Kahn said the IMF also needs to do a better job of tracing how risk percolates through the global economy. "Here it will be essential to improve our ability to monitor several dozen large complex financial institutions that make up the `plumbing' through which global capital flows," he said, while leaving national regulators the job of monitoring the solvency of individual institutions. http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory?id=9958995 moreResolved Question: What job should I do?
Since graduating in 2005 I have spent time travelling and working in various jobs (please see my CV attached). I have a lot of ideas about things I want to do and achieve, but have been reluctant to follow a particular path fully for fear of closing off others. As a result I haven't progressed in jobs, rather remained static and moved around different organisations on a similar level. I'm not 'career driven' in the typical sense, so career progression for me is less about working my way into a senior position, and more about realising my potential, experiencing new things, learning and contributing to society. The following things are important to me in a job: Variety - this is really important. I don't want to remain static in a job, and I really dislike routine. I like experiencing new things; achieving something and then moving onto the next. This is the main reason that I've not fulfilled my ambitions since graduation, even though I've had options to progress higher in almost every job I've had. I feel like committing to a path will cut off others. And geographical variety is important too, not just variety of the work I'm doing. I don't like being sat in front of a computer all day doing repetitive tasks. I really enjoy travel, seeing new places, learning about different cultures, meeting new people. Working abroad or being in a job that involves international travel would be good. Altruism - I don't see a job as a means to money alone. I need money to live (obviously) and I do want to be more than comfortable financially, but I want to feel like I've achieved something positive with my day - not just making money for people. I enjoy working with people and helping individuals, but I’m not sure if that type of career (e.g. social work) would meet my needs. I imagine that, again, I’d feel tied down to one path, to a specific ‘career’. I feel like I may be happier achieving things on a bigger scale, that help lots of people. Public sector or charity work appeals to me more than the private sector for this reason. However, I get very frustrated by bureaucracy and I'm attracted by the freedom and potential to achieve that the private sector offers. Creativity – I feel like a creative job would stimulate me far more than the opposite (though I am quite an analytical person). I like writing, and I have a lot of ideas. People – Ironically the jobs that I’ve enjoyed most have been the worst match to my ambitions. E.g. a call centre in Australia and admin work at Greene King. This is because the people I’ve worked with quickly became friends, and the working environment was very social. Here are some of the jobs/career paths I’m considering: Journalism – magazine journalism, BBC etc International development/politics – working for an MP, civil service Charity work (e.g. lobbyist, researching) – Oxfam, Amnesty International etc Post graduate study (e.g. MA in Politics) Research (e.g. doctorate) Teaching English as a foreign language International work (e.g. UN, disaster recovery) Volunteering overseas (e.g. VSO – teaching, community development projects) Writer (books, plays, poetry etc), travel writer, columnist Business analysis (my degree was in Information Systems. I don’t really enjoy this type of work and so haven’t pursued it) Working with young or disadvantaged children (e.g. duke of Edinburgh style outdoor trips) Starting a business There are aspects of most of these professions that appeal to me, and some of them I definitely want to achieve at some point (i.e. starting a business, writing, studying a masters, volunteering abroad). However, there’s not really one career path that stands out above the rest, and I’m not sure what the best direction to go in is at this point in my career. Can you recommend any career paths/jobs that would suit my aspirations? Do you have any advice about how to resolve my fears about not pursuing potentially interesting paths? Can you advise me on the most logical/best career move at this stage, which would allow me to gain a wide breadth of experience and then to specialise or move into different areas in the future? I think it’s important that I don’t waste time in jobs that don’t contribute anything to my goals/CV: is there a logical job type that would allow me to build up useful experience while I’m working out what to do longer-term, and that might help me decide this? Perhaps TEFL? moreResolved Question: What are the best organizations to volunteer with / Groups to belong to ?

MARIETTA - An undercover agent for the watchdog group Jobs for Georgians has worked as a bricklayer the past three months on the construction of the new Cobb County Superior Courthouse, and told the Cobb Board of Commissioners on Tuesday he has evidence that illegal immigrants have been employed and paid in cash by a subcontractor on the project. Commission Chairman Sam Olens said that the county would take "immediate action" if the allegations of illegal employment prove to be accurate, but added that right now they are only allegations. Jose Alvarez may have looked like just another bricklayer, but he has been gathering evidence for Jobs for Georgians that he says substantiates the group's suspicions that illegal immigrants are working under the watch of one of the project's subcontractors. Alvarez, who is also a business agent for the Washington, D.C.-based organization International Bricklayers, said he and another construction worker with Jobs for Georgians, Frank Lozano, began working on the site in November. Posing as bricklayers, they formed relationships with the workers and subcontractors and continued their work into January. He was told subcontractor Zebra's policy is for workers to show up at the job site in order to obtain work. But Alvarez said he could not get "a straight answer" from Victor Candelaria, a contractor hired by Zebra to oversee workers laying the blocks at the courthouse, about how much his workers were being paid. Alvarez said Candelaria's reluctance to give him answers aroused his suspicions. After discussions with other workers, Alvarez and Lozano learned they were being paid $10 an hour, as opposed to $18 an hour, which Alvarez said is the normal hourly rate. He said he soon found out there was a reason for the unreasonably low pay. "I have a recorded conversation with Damian Perez, a bricklayer from Canada with legal status, who told me that he asked Victor when he was first hired whether he needed to present them with his papers, and he was told no. He said all he would need to do is go through a drug screening and the safety training set up by Turner, and that was it," Alvarez said. "So I asked him why everyone was getting paid so low, and he told me Victor would take the checks issued to him by Zebra, cash them, then pay the workers in cash. He told them they were being paid less than usual, but that it was OK because there would be no taxes taken out. I can't say I was surprised, because we knew this was going on not only with Zebra but with others, but it was good to finally get it on tape." Alvarez and a dozen other members of Jobs for Georgians voiced their concerns during Tuesday morning's Cobb Board of commissioners meeting. Alvarez provided the commission with invoices that he said show Zebra even cheated Candelaria out of his $9,000 retainer. http://www.mdjonline.com/view/full_story/5903006/article-Report--Illegals-working-on-courthouse?instance=home_news_left moreResolved Question: 3. In another question I linked to a site (www.co2science.org) which listed various studies on the Medieval Warm Period. I was criticised for this choice of site as it has accepted funding from Exxon (which i already knew, having checked Sourcewatch). From what I can gather, the criticism is that any organisation which accepts funding from a big oil company is, by that very fact, dubious. Now, I'm not sure that's particularly true (it may just be that the company feels that the organisation's efforts or research is likely to coincide with its own) but if that's the case, then what about the research from the Climate Research Unit and the Tyndall Centre who as we now know have approached Shell for funding, as the email below shows: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ""SHELL INTERNATIONAL Mick Kelly and Aeree Kim (CRU, ENV) met with Robert Kleiburg (Shell International’s climate change team) on July 4th primarily to discuss access to Shell information as part of Aeree’s PhD study (our initiative) and broader collaboration through postgrad. student project placements (their initiative), but Robert was also interested in plans for the Tyndall Centre (TC). What ensued was necessarily a rather speculative discussion with the following points emerging. Shell International would give serious consideration to what I referred to in the meeting as a ‘strategic partnership’ with the TC, broadly equivalent to a ‘flagship alliance’ in the TC proposal. A strategic partnership would involve not only the provision of funding but some (limited but genuine) role in setting the research agenda etc. Shell’s interest is not in basic science. Any work they support must have a clear and immediate relevance to ‘real-world’ activities. They are particularly interested in emissions trading and CDM. Robert seemed to be more interested in supporting overseas (developing world) than home/EU studentships, presumably because of the credit abroad and their involvement in CDM. (It is just possible this impression was partially due to the focus on Aeree’s work in the overall discussion but I doubt it.) It seems likely that any support for studentships would be on a case by case basis according to the particular project in question. Finally, we agreed that we would propose a topic to this year’s MSc intake as a placement with Shell and see if any student expressed interest. If this comes off we can run it under the TC banner if it would help. I would suggest that Robert and his boss are invited to the TC launch at the very least (assuming it will be an invite type affair). Question is how can we and who should take this a step further. Maybe a meeting at Shell with business liaison person, Mike H if time and myself if time? I’d like to/am happy to stay involved through the next stage but then will probably have to back off. We didn’t cover the new renewable energy foundation. Mick Kelly 11 September 2000"" uea-tyndall-shell-memo.doc ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What "role in setting the research agenda" did Shell get, and why is it not a problem that the Tyndall Centre accepts money from Shell, BP and other oil companies, and lets them shape the "research agenda" but when a website accepts a donation from an oil company, then any study it so much as refers to is suspect? Double standards? .EDIT - @ Don't Panic. You wrote: ""It's a question of the driving force behind the research. Who wants the research to be done and for what purpose. "" ~ So it's okay for the CRU to take money from those nice people at Shell because their intentions are pure? (Like justifying emissions trading, eh?) The driving force behind my question? I want to understand why some people feel its fine for big oil companies to have a role in shaping the research agenda (when it's clear that their only motivation is making money from emissions trading) when the research agrees with what they believe. But when the an oil company funds research or a site that says stuff they disagree with, all of sudden that connection means we can't believe any of it. .---------------------------------------------------- EDIT @ Dawei Good point. I should of included a link to a cached copy of the (now deleted) CRU History page at the University of East Anglia. http://66.102.9.132/search?q=cache:http://www.cru.uea.ac.uk/cru/about/history/ As you will see, Shell, BP - and Greenpeace - are listed amongst their sources of funding (scroll to bottom of page for list). . moreVoting Question: PhD Industrial/Org. ok i have had to do this essay 4 times and i don't want to do it again. so if you have any advice on how to improve it. the thing in the parentheses are in-text citation. so here it is: BOOM!! Everyone turns and look and down goes the World Trade Center falling, before their eyes. This epic event has changed our life forever. It caused major heath issues for many people. It also started what is now called The War On Terrorism. As well as making big safety precautions come into play. This distressing event has changed our lives forever through heath issues, a war and safety measures. After the attack people started having heath related issues. Some now are now dying of lung disease 8 years later. There is not much they can do about it at this point(Eight). There was also a report that 30% of New Yorkers suffered post-traumatic stress disorder. Over the next six months this came in the form of sleeping disorders, nightmares, alienation or estrangement and depressions. This is an unverifiable incidence since PTSD sufferers may not be aware (9/11). Whether or not a person can be medically classified as such, there is no denying that there are major emotional effects for many people. A cataclysmic event has a subconscious consequence of making us aware of the fragility of our existence. This is a moment to gain perspective on life and focus on those things that really matter. Most prominent is the need to connect with loved ones. Patriotism, altruism and religious spiritualism figure too. This has affected the lives of many new Yorkers who have an impact on us at a distance. And the list of heath related issues are huge. Who knew so much sickness could come from one event. This also started the war on terrorism the stated objectives of the war in the US are to protect the citizens of the US and allies, to protect the business interests of the US and allies at home and abroad, break up terrorist cells in the US, and disrupt the activities of the international network of terrorist organizations made up of a number of groups under the umbrella of al-Qaeda (War). this effected us by sending troops into Iraq and Afghanistan and taking them away from their families and not giving them real jobs and possibly effecting the products we rely on everyday. And putting money towards the war in a bad economy and wasting money.(War) as well as possibly make enemies with other countries by fighting on their soil and starting future wars. The war on Terrorism continues today and remains the main story in the media as people sit and watch the war against terrorism. More safety precautions came into play after the attack and these are still are a big part of our normal life today. The airport wont allow you to have any bottles 3 oz. or bigger (prohibited). The event also started the US Patriot Act. The Act increases the ability of law enforcement agencies to search telephone, e-mail communications, medical, financial, and other records; eases restrictions on foreign intelligence gathering within the United States; expands the Secretary of Treasury’s authority to regulate financial transactions, particularly those involving foreign individuals and entities; and enhances the discretion of law enforcement and immigration authorities in detaining and deporting immigrants suspected of terrorism-related acts (USA). We lose major privacy and have to be careful about what we say and no one wants to think while they talk. Another thing that was created after 9/11 was the Department of Homeland Security is a Cabinet department of the United States federal government with the primary responsibilities of protecting the territory of the U.S. from terrorist attacks and responding to natural disasters (United). So now the government is trying to be safer and make sure that another disaster like this will never happen again. On a last note the 9/11 event still effects us today and will continue to do so. So much pain and suffering has come from this event, with heath issues as well as a war. But has made America stronger with the USA patriot act and homeland security. So even in dark times there will always be a light at the end of the tunnel, we just have to keep going. moreResolved Question: I REALLY need help in choosing my university major. I want to be an Industrial Organisation Psychologist!?
I just graduated from a Graphic Design degree but I decided to do an extra 7 years *sigh* of torturing studies to become what I want, an Industrial Organization Psychologist (IO PSY). I got accepted to do a double degree in a Bachelor of PSYCHOLOGY and Bachelor of BUSINESS. I'm enrolling now and must choose only ONE major. I was wondering which one would be the best option to take me to where I want to be: - Accounting (YUK) - Advertising (This interests me because I'm a graphic designer) - Economic (YUK) - Fiance (TRIPLE YUK) - Human Resource - International Business (Can someone tell me what I can do with an INT.BUS major?) - Management (I thought this may be too broad and not specialized enough) - Marketing (Whats the diff between advertising and marketing???) - Public Relation Since I'm interested in design, I was interested in advertising but I don't know how changing major may effect what I learn and where I end up specialising in. Thanks!!!!Sorry for the misunderstanding. I'm really interested in Designing and ALSO Industry Organisation psychology. I decided to do my first degree in designing then I finally decided to also take a pathway in I.O.Psy. I can do freelance graphic design whilst I study. I hope i made senseedit again: I already completed my degree in Design and I AM already a graphic designer but I just decided I want to take up another diff career. :) moreResolved Question: Why is Dr Rajendra Pachauri Head UN's climate change panel making a fortune from carbon trading company's?
You will recognise this man from the television as no one in the world exercised more influence on the events leading up to the Copenhagen conference on global warming than Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and mastermind of its latest report in 2007. Although Dr Pachauri is often presented as a scientist (he was even once described by the BBC as “the world’s top climate scientist”), as a former railway engineer with a PhD in economics he has no qualifications in climate science at all. What has also almost entirely escaped attention, however, is how Dr Pachauri has established an astonishing worldwide portfolio of business interests with bodies which have been investing billions of dollars in organisations dependent on the IPCC’s policy recommendations. These outfits include banks, oil and energy companies and investment funds heavily involved in ‘carbon trading’ and ‘sustainable technologies’, which together make up the fastest-growing commodity market in the world, estimated soon to be worth trillions of dollars a year. Today, in addition to his role as chairman of the IPCC, Dr Pachauri occupies more than a score of such posts, acting as director or adviser to many of the bodies which play a leading role in what has become known as the international ‘climate industry’ Read more from the Telegraph here... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/6847227/Questions-over-business-deals-of-UN-climate-change-guru-Dr-Rajendra-Pachauri.html moreResolved Question: Social Studies: Geography help quick?

Part 1 - Analyzing Primary Sources: (2 points each / 10 total points) Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. The passage is an excerpt from President Bill Clinton’s State of the Union address in January 1998. . . . As we enter the twenty-first century, the global economy requires us to seek opportunity not just at home, but in all markets of the world. We must shape this global economy, not shrink from it. In the last five years, we have led the way in opening new markets, with 240 trade agreements that remove foreign barriers to products bearing the proud stamp “Made in the U.S.A.” Today, record high exports account for fully one-third of our economic growth. I want to keep them growing, because that’s the way to keep America growing and to advance a safer, more stable world. . . . I know there is opposition to more comprehensive trade agreements. I have listened carefully and I believe that the opposition is rooted in two fears: first, that our trading partners will have lower environmental and labor standards, which will give them an unfair advantage in our market and do their own people no favors, even if there’s more business; and, second, that if we have more trade, more of our workers will lose their jobs and have to start over. I think we should seek to advance worker and environmental standards around the world. I have made it abundantly clear that it should be a part of our trade agenda. But we cannot influence other countries’ decisions if we send them a message that we’re backing away from trade with them. 1. According to President Clinton, what accounted for one-third of U.S. economic growth? 2. What opposition to comprehensive trade agreements does President Clinton acknowledge? 3. What did President Clinton make “abundantly clear” should be a part of the trade agenda? 4. Why does President Clinton want to keep trade agreements going? 5.
