Taking Stock Of Tech Startups In Paris

In some ways, being an entrepreneur in Paris is like being an entrepreneur anywhere. The odds are against you, nothing comes easily, and most people think you are crazy. It???s harder to be an entrepreneur in Paris than it is in Silicon Valley. It also seems harder than NYC or many cities in the US. And I suspect it???s harder than London as well.

Entrepreneurship is a French word and modern day venture capital was invented by a Frenchman named George Doriot. If you don???t know about Doriot, you haven???t been reading this blog recently. But even though the French have a historical connection to entrepreneurship and venture capital, the French economy and society doesn???t seem to be particularly supportive of entrepreneurship.

It starts with the economics of being an entrepreneur. more

US stocks head for higher after employment reading

Dow Jones industrial average futures rose 78, or 0.69 percent, to 11,451. On Tuesday, the Dow rose 266 points, more than wiping out a nearly 240-point loss from the previous session.

Standard & Poor's 500 index futures rose 8.30, or 0.66 percent, to 1,270.00, and Nasdaq 100 index futures rose 15.00, or 0.81 percent, to 1,857.00.

Bond prices fell after the Fed announced its plans and as stock futures advanced. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 4.11 percent from 4.04 percent late Tuesday.

The dollar was higher against other major currencies, while gold prices fell.

Wall Street will continue to watch oil after it hit a two-month low Tuesday and led to the rally that more than made up for a sharp pullback in stocks Monday. more

After 200 years, Adam Smith is honoured in Edinburgh

The invisible hand of a Calgary entrepreneur helped build a monument to a neglected free market economist. Matthew Johnston - July 18, 2008

On July 4th, a ceremony was held in Edinburgh, Scotland to unveil a statue of economist Adam Smith, 200 years after his death.

While the monument, paid for entirely with private money, was erected by the London-based Adam Smith Institute, a Calgary entrepreneur played an early and important role in honouring this neglected free market economist and Edinburgh's most illustrious son.

Voting Question: What do US citizens think about their own country being one of the worlds largest manufacturer of landmines?

I find myself perplexed at the issue of landmines still being used today. They are indiscriminate killers and remain dangerous decades after being deployed, and long after the wars have ended, still killing people to this day, many of which were not even born when the war was is progress. Each year in Vietnam to this day, as many as 1000 civilians are maimed or killed by US deployed mines or unexploded ordinance. Mines being the most common cause of death or dismemberment. Tragically, this is almost 40 years since the US left Vietnam. More alarming to me, is that the United States is credited as being the largest producer of land mines second only to Russia. http://www.colby.edu/par/Fall 98/LandMines.html From 1969 to 1992 the United States exported nearly four and a half million antipersonnel landmines to at least thirty-four different countries (including Afghanistan, Angola, Vietnam and Iraq). For these landmines America received on average one hundred twenty-five million dollars per year. Over forty-seven American companies manufacture APL, their components or delivery systems. Landmine production contracts in the late 1980s and early 1990s have earned companies upwards of three hundred thirty-six million dollars (Alliant technologies; 1985-95). While currently American corporations are adhering to the American moratorium on landmine production (America's stockpiles are full), the American defense industry is no doubt reluctant to lose such lucrative business relationships with the Pentagon and the foreign countries who also purchase these landmines. In the Television Documentary "The world according to Bush", it was quoted that former President George W. Bush is the largest individual shareholder in the US companies that produce landmines. They being... Raytheon, Honeywell, Rockwell, Texas Instruments and Lockeed-Martin. http://www.icbl.org/index.php 120 Countries sign a treaty to ban land mines - but not the US. The US remains the only western country not to sign the current treaty, and has refused to sign all previous invitations to do so. http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/mines/background-apercu/making-mines-fabrication.aspx?lang=eng The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) says 13 countries have not banned anti-personnel landmine production: Burma, China, Cuba, India, Iran, Nepal, North Korea, South Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Singapore, United States and Vietnam. Some of these countries have not actually made AP mines in recent years, but refuse to ban production officially. http://www.icbl.org/index.php/icbl/Library/News-Articles/Universal/us_shameful_lm_policy By refusing to join the Mine Ban Treaty, Obama shows disregard for international humanitarian law Last Tuesday, just before the Thanksgiving holiday, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly revealed that President Obama would follow in President George W. Bush's footsteps and not sign the international Mine Ban Treaty. Many of us had hoped he would embrace President Clinton's pledge that the U.S. would join. The United States produced a policy in 2004, but they are yet to commence following their own policy... http://www.state.gov/t/pm/wra/c11735.htm See also.... http://www.banminesusa.org/ US based campaign to have the US Government ban landmines. I have traveled South East Asia extensively and have met so many people, predominately young people in Vietnam and Cambodia missing arms and legs as a result of US landmines. I was in the South Vietnam town of Vung Tau in 2007 when the discovery was made. As workers were digging the ground for a new fence around a school, a US made anti tank mine was uncovered only 18 inches below the surface of the ground, and directly under a well worn path that children walked on daily. It was a tragedy waiting to happen. I learned also while in Vietnam, that volunteers from Australia, New Zealand, United Kindom and Thailand were working together for over 20 years to remove or detonate the unexploded ordinances and mines left behind by the United States, but it was only in very recent years that the US Government provided funding to do it. I turned to read some books and credible references to learn that the majority of landmines deployed by the US were dropped from aircraft and their locations are unknown, but the other allied countries that deployed land mines during that war, deployed them by hand and map the location of each one, thereby removing all of their mines within 2 years of the end of the Vietnam war. I visited a small town in Southern Vietnam near the Mekong River. Near the middle of the town, surrounded by housing was a piece of land measuring around 8 acres in size. Signs about the heavily grassed area warn to stay out. The block was a former US base. I was told that straying dogs and cows once or twice a year set off the unexploded ordinance left behind by the US. I was also told that to this day, no work has been done by the US to clear the more

Resolved Question: What do you think about these proposed bank regulations that keep investors in the dark?

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601039&sid=aP4uPeND1UH4 Sept. 11 (Bloomberg) -- The financial results that companies give investors are supposed to paint a picture of how things are. Banks and their regulators want to turn that notion on its head so they can spin a smooth tale of how they would like things to be. Sadly, some accounting rule makers may be ready to appease banks and the politicians who back them. If that happens, financial results will change from a vital tool for investors to a vehicle catering to managers, regulators and employees. This would undermine the idea that the needs of investors drive markets, replacing it with a more corporatist outlook favored by companies and politicians in continental Europe and Japan. In other words, the goal of providing unbiased, impartial information about a company’s worth would be trumped by a company’s business model and the broader needs of the financial system. This battle over financial reporting is playing out in the debate over proposed accounting rules for how banks value things such as loans and bonds. The International Accounting Standards Board is hoping to have new rules in place by year-end. The Financial Accounting Standards Board in the U.S. is moving at a slower pace, though the boards hope to eventually agree to similar rules. Both groups have come under fire from banks and regulators in the past month, although the IASB has drawn the most heat. That’s happened even though the IASB has already bent too far to please the industry. Listen to Government In late August, French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde wrote to the European Commission decrying some of the proposed rules while saying the independent IASB must be made “more responsive” to government wishes. Banks and their regulators meanwhile have claimed that proposals from both boards rely too much on mark-to-market accounting. The American Bankers Association yesterday wrote to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke asking that they bring up the issue at the meeting later this month of the G-20 industrialized nations. The attacks go deeper, though, seeking to change the underpinnings of financial reporting and who it should serve. The accounting-rule changes should gauge the worth of a company’s holdings based on its business model, according to a letter from the ABA last month. This would allow banks to overlook short-term changes in the value of a security because they decide to call themselves a long-term holder. No. 1 Audience The rules should also “improve the decision usefulness and relevance of financial reporting for stakeholders, including prudential regulators,” according to a document issued last month by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, a group whose members are central banks. In other words, investors should no longer think that they are the main audience for financial statements. The practical result of such approaches would be to allow banks to report smoother results that supposedly reflect their long-term prospects. For banks, smoother profits would presumably lead to higher share prices. For regulators, less volatile results would supposedly make it easier to maintain financial stability. The problem, as investors know, is that life, and markets, aren’t smooth. Conditions change, as do financial values. Because of this, investors need financial statements that provide information about the current state of a company’s business and worth. The past two years, replete with unexpected failures of supposedly solid firms like Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., have shown how vital that is. Creditors Count Plus, investors aren’t just shareholders. They include creditors such as bondholders, who need to know what a company is worth today in case it goes under. Banks argue that their intent should matter. If a bank plans to hold, rather than trade, a security, it shouldn’t have to worry about daily fluctuations in its value, they say. Both the IASB and FASB have given ground to this business- model view, although the FASB’s changes aren’t as onerous for investors. The IASB, on the other hand, wants to give banks more chances to show holdings at their historical cost. In doing so, it also plans, unlike the FASB, to allow banks to completely ignore changes in the market value of some securities. This may result in banks reporting puffed-up equity, giving investors a false sense of comfort. Two banks, for example, may hold the same AAA-rated security, which has fallen, say, $5 from a face value of $100. One might report a value of $95, the other, $100. This would make it difficult for investors to make apples-to-apples comparisons among companies. Predicting Trouble It may also leave investors in the second bank smarting if it turns out markets correctly predicted looming trouble for the bond’s value. Oddly enough, the IASB has still come under fiClick on the link to see the rest. more

Resolved Question: When Obama nominated tax-cheat Geithner, did he know Geithner wanted to go after OTHER tax cheats?

Obviously Turbo Timmy made a mistake. (sarcasm) But when the IRS comes for you, do you think that excuse is going to work?? This seems wrong. A tax cheat helping lock up other tax cheats. What do you think?? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090521/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/us_geithner_budget_2;_ylt=AmQCXcZtpUHh4biSPhlcBxxH2ocA;_ylu=X3oDMTE2bzA5djE5BHBvcwMyBHNlYwN5bi1yLWItbGVmdARzbGsDZXYtZ2VpdGhuZXI6 WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says the majority of additional money he is seeking for his department will be devoted to improve tax collection efforts. The Treasury's $13.4 billion budget request for fiscal 2010 represents a 5 percent increase over current spending. Geithner told a House appropriations subcommittee $332 million would go to new enforcement by the Internal Revenue Service and $90 million to protect taxpayer records from Internet hackers. The enforcement emphasis means that tax returns — particularly those from businesses and high-income Americans — will face greater scrutiny in hopes of closing an annual $300 billion gap between taxes owed and taxes actually collected. Geithner also said he wants to boost international tax compliance. more

Resolved Question: Should people that still owe taxes be given until the end of Obama's first term to pay?? (4 yrs like Geithner)?

Since Treasury oversees the IRS and the current Treasury Secretary didn't feel compelled to pay back taxes for FOUR YEARS without consequence?? Just doesn't seem quite right that Geithner the tax-cheat wants to INCREASE SPENDING (which requires tax dollars) so the IRS can better collect taxes from those who haven't paid?? Shouldn't we all get four extra years like Turbo Timmy got?? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090521/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/us_geithner_budget_2;_ylt=AmQCXcZtpUHh4biSPhlcBxxH2ocA;_ylu=X3oDMTE2bzA5djE5BHBvcwMyBHNlYwN5bi1yLWItbGVmdARzbGsDZXYtZ2VpdGhuZXI6 WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says the majority of additional money he is seeking for his department will be devoted to improve tax collection efforts. Resolved Question: Do you agree with Geithner that we need MORE bureaucracy and MORE spending so IRS can take money faster?

Since the IRS isn't collecting tax money quickly enough, tax cheat Geithner (who didn't pay back taxes for FOUR YEARS) wants to INCREASE FEDERAL SPENDING (which obviously requires more tax dollars) so that he can take your money more efficiently. Obviously the rules for Average Americans are different. Tax cheat Geithner also wants to establish an "independent agency" to enforce financial services regulations. (Independent like the Federal Reserve which is an unchecked hybrid corporation/govt. entity??) So what do you think, is more bureaucracy the solution?? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090521/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/us_geithner_budget_2;_ylt=AmQCXcZtpUHh4biSPhlcBxxH2ocA;_ylu=X3oDMTE2bzA5djE5BHBvcwMyBHNlYwN5bi1yLWItbGVmdARzbGsDZXYtZ2VpdGhuZXI6 WASHINGTON – Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says the Obama administration is considering an independent agency that would set and enforce financial services regulations to protect consumers. Geithner said the administration is studying the structure and how much authority such an agency would have. Geithner's comments Thursday were the most specific acknowledgment yet that such an entity could be part of the Obama administration's broader effort to overhaul financial sector regulations. Geithner was testifying before a House appropriations subcommittee. The head of the Securities and Exchange Commission has objected to a watchdog that would chip away at the SEC's powers. Geithner told House members that the administration is looking at how a consumer protection agency would relate to "authorities that exist across agencies now." THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below. Resolved Question: Isn't there a fundamental problem with tax-cheat Geithner increasing govt. spending for better IRS collection?

Tim Geithner didn't pay his back taxes for FOUR YEARS. The same rules DO NOT apply to Average American tax payer. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090521/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/us_geithner_budget_2;_ylt=AmQCXcZtpUHh4biSPhlcBxxH2ocA;_ylu=X3oDMTE2bzA5djE5BHBvcwMyBHNlYwN5bi1yLWItbGVmdARzbGsDZXYtZ2VpdGhuZXI6 WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says the majority of additional money he is seeking for his department will be devoted to improve tax collection efforts. Resolved Question: Yo hip hop wake up !!! What do you know about politics? I just read this below about your tax loot..whatdadeal?

http://www.thenewamerican.com/economy/commentary-mainmenu-43/915 Newspapers are fixated upon $160 million in bonuses given to American International Group (AIG) executives. And it’s nice to know where the millions are going (note: the bonuses could have been cancelled had the federal government let the company go bankrupt, as officials should have). But where are the trillions in TARP, TALC and Federal Reserve Bank bailout funds going? The man in charge of administering the bailouts is Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who served as a staff member of the New York City-based Council on Foreign Relations before being hired in 2003 to head the New York City branch of the Federal Reserve Bank (Fed). As the vice chairman of the Fed’s Open Market Committee, Geithner is probably a poor choice to get the nation out of it’s current economic mess. He served as Alan Greenspan’s number two man at the Fed, so Geithner is as responsible as anyone for facilitating the severity of the real estate and financial bubble and its subsequent collapse. After all, the Fed was the driving force behind the asset bubble, inflating the bubble larger and larger through artificially low interest rates and an inflationary easy-money policy. Under Geithner and his predecessor (former Goldman Sachs CEO Henry “Hank” Paulson), the majority of bailout funds have been awarded to high-level donors to Geithner's former employer: the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). Here’s a survey of TARP bailout awards to the CFR’s corporate members (there are a total of only a little more than 200 corporate members at all levels): Among the “Founders,” those who give $100,000 or more to the CFR, can be found: •American Express Company: $3.389 billion TARP •Goldman Sachs: $10 billion TARP, plus a separate Federal Reserve bailout and more than $13 billion of the allotment to AIG (below) •Merrill Lynch: $45 billion through its corporate parent, Bank of America, which is also a CFR Premium corporate member, plus $6.8 billion of AIG’s bailout funds “President’s Circle” CFR members ($60,000 or more) received the following bailout funds: •American International Group (AIG): $182 billion in total TARP/TALF funds to date •Citibank: $50 billion TARP •Morgan Stanley: $10 billion TARP Premium members ($30,000 or more to CFR): •Bank of New York/Mellon Corporation: $3 billion TARP •Freddie Mac: Sharing with Fannie Mae $1.25 trillion — that’s $1,250 billion — in mortgage securities being purchased from the Federal Reserve Bank •Chrysler: $4 billion TARP, plus $1.5 billion TARP for Chrysler Financial •JP Morgan Chase: $25 billion TARP •CIT Group: $2.33 billion TARP That’s a total of more than $1 trillion in bailout funds for CFR corporate members, easily the lion’s share of the total bailout funds awarded to date. CFR Membership seems to have its benefits, and then some. So why is no one asking questions about why most of the funds are going to the former employers of our Treasury secretaries? Perhaps because many of the entities who should ask "why" are also CFR corporate members. Among the financial press, the CFR counts among its members Bloomberg, General Electric (NBC, CNBC, MSNBC), News Corporation (Fox, Fox Business), Standard and Poor's, ABC News, Time Warner (CNN, Time magazine, etc.), Moody's, and McGraw Hill (book publishers). Somebody should ask the question why the same people who brought us this financial crisis are now bringing us the "cure," and why that cure necessarily involves financing former employers of the people making the decisions. more

Resolved Question: Is the Federal Reserve innocent in all these troubles America is having? If so, what can we do about it?

http://www.thenewamerican.com/economy/commentary-mainmenu-43/915 Newspapers are fixated upon $160 million in bonuses given to American International Group (AIG) executives. And it’s nice to know where the millions are going (note: the bonuses could have been cancelled had the federal government let the company go bankrupt, as officials should have). But where are the trillions in TARP, TALC and Federal Reserve Bank bailout funds going? Resolved Question: Is the gap between mainstream America and the political class bigger than that between Dems and GOP? E.G. AIG?

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/business/federal_bailout/most_americans_say_let_aig_go_out_of_business_political_class_disagrees "Fifty-nine percent (59%) of American adults say it’s better for the economy to let American International Group (AIG) go out of business rather than providing federal subsidies to keep the insurance giant afloat. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that only 18% think it’s better to provide the subsidies while 24% are not sure. But those who align with America’s Political Class have a fundamentally different view. By a 70% to 11% margin, the Political Class believes it is better to keep AIG in business through subsidies. At the other extreme, 73% of Populists say it’s better to let AIG go out of business. Populists represent a majority of the country and it’s reasonable to consider their views as the views of Mainstream America. Those who find themselves in the middle, between the Political Class and Mainstream America, say it’s better to let AIG go by a 44% to 22% margin. (Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls.) Rasmussen Reports updates also available on Twitter. Beginning this week, Rasmussen Reports will periodically release data highlighting the gap between Mainstream America and the Political Class on issues of the day. From the mainstream, or populist, point of view, big government and big business are political allies rather than political opponents. As defined by recent research, 55% of Americans are Populists. Another 20% lean in that direction, meaning the 75% generally hold the attitudes of Mainstream America. Only seven percent (7%) are aligned with the Political Class. Another 7% lean towards the Political Class views. It’s worth noting that the gap between Mainstream America and the Political Class is far bigger than the partisan gap within those groups. Among Republicans who share the mainstream view, 77% say it’s best to let AIG go out of business. So do 70% of Democrats in this group and 72% of those not affiliated with either major party. There are roughly equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats holding the mainstream, or populist, view. Overall, just nine percent (9%) of Americans believe that any additional money should be provided to AIG. Populists reject the idea of more money for the insurance giant by an 85% to seven percent (7%) margin. Those in the Political Class are more conflicted: 45% are opposed to more money for AIG while 24% support it. AIG has already received $170 billion as a bailout from the federal government to stay in business but has triggered public outrage with reports that it gave its executives $165 million in bonuses after the bailout. Seventy-six percent (76%) of Americans say those who got the bonuses should be required to give them back. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of Americans also now believe most of the taxpayer money given out as bailouts is going to the very people who created the country’s current economic crisis. What do you think? Is our political class completely out of touch with us, and more in touch with the special interests they are bailing out with our money? more

Resolved Question: My chances of getting into pepperdine?

What are my chances of getting into Pepperdine? I want it so badly. This is me in a nutshell. (A pretty big nutshell. I'm sorry if it's too long! This is all there is to know about me, nothing more and nothing less.) - I'm an international student (Dutch) - I'm a christian - My parents can pay full tuition - I am on the youth board of the Dutch organisation of Foster Parents - I'm going to work in an orphanage in Sri Lanka for 2 weeks - Did a Cambridge advanced and Cambridge proficiency course (so i have professional english certificates) - Will receive a list with social competetences from my high school that describe the following activities i have participated in or positions i have held and the skills and qualities i have obtained by participating in them. (which are counselor-assistant, junior-coordinator, social traineeship, leadership course, given leadership lessons to freshmans) - On the school news paper - Giving singing performances for disabled children - Have set up an alcohol awareness project - Participating in an international China project with the principal - If everything goes according to plan i will be on another board at my school next year - Job experience (also tutoring kids in latin) - GPA 3.0. (but i'm going to a top 10 school in the nation, it's way more difficult than a regular high school in the US. But is that going to be a problem??!!! I hope not!!) - Will write an essay about when i fell from the stairs and got into a coma for 48 hours and how i had changed into a totally different person when i woke up (went to wearing only black, cut my hair, paralysed, had to take ritalin) but i fully recovered and how that has changed me and has made me a fighter and a leader - Planning on getting recommendation letters from the principal and the person directly beneath te principal and the person beneath that person. ( i have very good relationships with them. They have all three said they are happy with me as a student. And that is not something they say all the time.) I'm also planning on getting recommendations from my economics teacher, english teacher, counselor and the coordinator of the youth board of foster parents. - Spanish course (i'm learning spanish outside of school) - These are my current subjects: English, French, Dutch, German, Latin, Math, history, philosophy, art and economics ( i have also had physics for three years and science for one year and greek for two years and some more subjects) - Passion: writing. I have been writing since i was 8, have got 2 poems published when i was 12 - My dad's going to learn me how to trade with money on the market. (I thought that would be pretty rigorous if i want to get into Pepperdine's business school?) - I must be the most motivated person in the world. I have dreamed of Pepperdine my whole life. So do you think this is good enough? Do you think i have a shot? There is no college i'd rather go to! I hope you can help me out Thank you ps. i'm sorry if i've made any grammar mistakes, i'm very tired and english is not my native languageAlso doing a World United College course for two weeks this summer more

Resolved Question: Hows my essay looking so far?

hey im a freshman in college(so its a college paper) so far its at 683 words and im kinda stuck, any advice, hints or anything i can use to keep this going? and i chose to write about the contaminated products sold around the world by china, by the way. thanks if you read it! -heres the topic- Choose a current world event (2 sources) that is currently receiving coverage in the media. The paper should be at least 1000 words and should include a brief summary of the event/issue and your reaction to the topic. -essay so far- Hearing about contaminated products from China in today’s news is not an uncommon thing. China has come under the spotlight over the past few years with issues regarding the safety of many of their products shipped throughout the world. Although China has recently emerged as a world super power; dominating many of the worlds markets, they don’t seem to have a grasp on managing the quality of their products sold, causing them major repercussions. Chinese products First Came under heavy fire in 2007 when many of their toys were found to be laced with Lead causing illness in many children. On a single day over 400,000 toys were recalled across the United States. (The Associated Press, 2007) The Issue is not just a problem in the United States; all across the world Countries have been receiving laced products. Tens of thousands of tubes of toothpaste were recently taken off shelves across Spain and Italy; they were reportedly laced with a toxin called diethylene glycol (International Herald Tribune, 2007). I did some research and discovered that diethylene glycol in even small doses can cause kidney failure. The fact that something as dangerous as diethylene glycol being in some Chinese made toothpaste is shocking and appalling. The Food and Drug Administration recently discovered that several Chinese companies have been selling contaminated Heparin in 11 countries including Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the United States. (HARRIS, 2008) Medications like blood thinners should always be top quality when sold, but the report showed that the FDA does not have an adequate enough budget to oversee all of the products shipped from these Chinese drug plants. Although China is to blame over the whole product contamination situation, many Chinese officials have been trying to remedy the situation and bring down those who are responsible. The most recent contamination involving the industrial substance melamine being put into milk was not so much accidental, 22 individuals of an underground group were accused of intentionally putting melamine into the milk. The perpetrators were consequently arrested, showing Chinas attempt to put a stop to the massive food contamination epidemic. I found the whole Contamination situation to be very shocking. It’s amazing that such a large amount of Chinese made and manufactured products ranging from toys to food, to even blood thinners could be contaminated with many deadly and unsafe chemicals. It angers me that the Chinese industry is all about the business; it’s all about just trying to make money without thinking of the consequences of their actions. For example meat from China is prohibited due to being way below FDA standards, but many in the business label the meat as a vegetable which sometimes allows them to slip it by the inspectors to be sold in the US market. (Weiss, 2007) Selling meat that doesn’t pass basic FDA requirements is a very bad business practice and downright unethical. It’s very ironic that although Chinese products keep showing up as being laced with dangerous chemicals the American population keeps purchasing these products every day. Since it’s so much cheaper to make many products in China we keep getting products made over there as opposed to in the States. Of course we Americans are getting what we pay for; we ask the Chinese to produce goods at ridiculously low prices and in turn get products at even lower than poor quality that happen to be laced with dangerous chemicals. At what point has it gone too far? We need to stop depending on China for every little product and start focusing on our own industry; the cost saved by buying Chinese products is not worth the cost of lives, specially those of the innocent children primarily affected by the contaminations. I feel somewhat bad for the Chinese Government, they have been trying to boost their name as a nation in order to become an important world power but keep meeting major setbacks such as this scandal. If they want to be on par with other nations then they have a lot of work to do  more

Resolved Question: Why would we build any more nuclear power plants?

A lot of people, including John McCain, think nuclear power is the best solution to the US's energy problems. However, the cost of nuclear power has been skyrocketting. From 2000 through October 2007, nuclear power plant construction costs -- mainly materials, labor and engineering -- have gone up 185%. http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/06/02/nuclear_power_price/ Last November, Nuclear Engineering International ran a story entitled 'For some utilities, the capital costs of a new nuclear power plant are prohibitive.' http://www.neimagazine.com/story.asp?storyCode=2047917 Duke Energy won't even reveal the cost estimate for a proposed nuclear plant in the Carolinas because it's so high. http://www.newsobserver.com/business/story/1054171.html According to some analysts, a reasonable estimate for levelized cost range of nuclear power is 12 to 17 cents per kilowatt hour lifetime. The California Public Utilities Commission estimates new nuclear plants would cost 15 cents per kWh before transmission and delivery costs. In comparison, the same commission puts the current cost of concentrated solar thermal at 13 cents per kWh. And the cost could drop by as much as 20% within the next 10 years as the technology improves. And concentrated solar thermal has storage capacity, which means it can follow power demand, unlike nuclear, which produces constant energy output. Jigar Shah, chief strategy officer of SunEdison, said he could guarantee delivery to Florida of more power with solar photovoltaics -- including energy storage so the power was not intermittent -- for less money than the nuke plants being constructed there cost. According to the Bush Energy Department, Americans could get 300 gigawatts of wind by 2030 at a cost of 6 to 8.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, including the cost of transmission to access existing power lines. http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/06/02/nuclear_power_price/index1.html And the risk of nuclear construction projects going into default and costing taxpayers tens of billions of dollars is very high. http://redgreenandblue.org/2008/09/11/mccains-nuclear-energy-plan-may-cost-315-billion/ So why should we build any more nuclear power plants when they're more expensive, more risky, and not as clean as renewables like wind and solar thermal?Cactus Jack - nuclear receives far more subsidies than renewables.Bob - nuclear plants take far longer to build than renewable energy plants.eric c - the IPCC advocates a 2% increase in nuclear vs. a 15% increase in renewable energy by 2030. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPCC_Fourth_Assessment_Report#Mitigation_in_the_short_and_medium_term_.28until_2030.29 more

Resolved Question: Calderon vows to restore Mexico's appeal but will it work ?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070306/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/mexico_curing_migration MEXICO CITY - Mexican President Felipe Calderon won't be fighting for migration reform when he meets with President Bush next week. Instead, he will be be spelling out what he intends to do to keep Mexicans at home. ADVERTISEMENT Calderon, who was inaugurated on Dec. 1, has pledged to take 100 actions in his first 100 days in office, many of which represent the first steps toward "curing" Mexico's long tradition of illegal migration to the U.S. If implemented, his proposals could help transform Mexico from a labor-exporting country with relatively low growth, productivity and wages into an investment-rich, job-producing economy with better living standards for its 107 million people, nearly half of whom still live in poverty. "We are laying the foundation for a more just, healthy society with better and more equal opportunities for all," he said. Even a modicum of success for Calderon would improve on the record of his predecessor Vicente Fox, who failed to persuade the United States to accept Mexican guest workers and also could not put in place proposed reforms. Like Fox, Calderon faces powerful Mexican monopolies and oligopolies, union leaders and old-school politicians who have resisted changes to a system that concentrates power and wealth in a small number of hands and blocks attempts to improve competition, lower consumer prices and open the job market to more people. Unlike Fox, Calderon has shown he can rally lawmakers and others behind his plans: Congress unanimously passed his 2007 federal budget and he has united state governments behind a nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking. Among other things, he has proposed labor, energy and judicial reforms to encourage investment, promote competition and create jobs; improved tax collection to generate more revenue to fight poverty and improve education; universal health care and support for small and medium-size businesses. "Curing" migration will take many more than his six years in office, Calderon says. With this in mind, he set the goal of boosting Mexico's per-capita income from the equivalent of about $8,000 today to around $30,000 by 2030. "It won't be easy. It won't be fast, but yes, it is possible," Calderon said. Calderon and Bush will meet in Merida, the capital of Yucatan state, on March 13 and 14. Officials have not disclosed in detail the talks' agenda, but in addition to migration, the two are expected to discuss drugs and unresolved trade disputes over trucking rights and agricultural products. U.S.-bound migrants include not only poor and poorly educated unskilled laborers, but also middle-class entrepreneurs, college graduates and professionals. Many actually have jobs in Mexico, but the salaries don't match their talents and experience, and workplace discrimination is widespread. "I think he's on the right track, but migration is a long-term problem," said Jorge Chabat, an international affairs expert at Mexico City's Center for Economic Research and Instruction. Jose Antonio Perez, a 27-year-old college graduate from the oil-rich Gulf coast state of Veracruz, has a degree in mechanical engineering, but no real career prospects in Mexico. His jobs have included a five-month, unpaid engineering internship at a boat-repair company; a two-year job with a telephone company that offered no benefits and no chance of advancement; and his current teaching job, which requires little of his engineering skills and offers no insurance benefits, vacation, or job security. Perez works 12 hours a day Monday through Friday teaching high school mathematics and computers — a post that pays $12,000 a year. He supplements his income with odd carpentry and bricklaying jobs, or selling clothing and even cars. "I sleep four hours a night," he said. "I can't even think of having a family until I get something more secure." More than a year ago, when several of Perez's friends were working illegally in the United States, they earned as much as $26,300 a year pumping gas or working in carpentry. The friends have since returned, but their stories have inspired Perez. If his situation doesn't improve in six months, he plans to cross the border as well. "I could be a carpenter or a locksmith," he said. Calderon — who often notes that he has relatives in the United States, although he has not revealed their legal status — says he is well aware of the difficulties Mexicans face trying to live and work in their own country. He recently told the American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico: "The ideal situation for Mexico is not to have Mexicans migrate." ____ On the Net: http://www.presidencia.gob.mx/en more
