£2.5 billion funding for region’s businesses and communities

Richard Ellis, chair of EEDA said: "EEDA will be working closely with EERA and regional partners as well as businesses and other partners to develop a clear and effective plan on how this £2.5 billion of funding is best invested for the region’s prosperity and to ensure everybody living and working in the East of England has an improved quality of life. Lawmakers Updated On ICARE

Updates on a popular health insurance program for small businesses and a new program to help Kentuckians in long-term care receive Medicaid were given to state lawmakers.

Insurance Commissioner Sharon Clark spoke to the first meeting of the Interim Joint Committee on Banking and Insurance since taking her new job on July 16. The ICARE program has been steadily growing since it was first passed by the General Assembly in 2006, she said. More than 20 companies each month have signed up for the program, which grants small businesses funds to help pay for health insurance for their employees.

In order to qualify for the pilot program, the businesses must employ 25 or fewer people and not currently offer health insurance. The small businesses may also qualify if they have an employee with a high cost condition. more

MARIETTA - An undercover agent for the watchdog group Jobs for Georgians has worked as a bricklayer the past three months on the construction of the new Cobb County Superior Courthouse, and told the Cobb Board of Commissioners on Tuesday he has evidence that illegal immigrants have been employed and paid in cash by a subcontractor on the project. Commission Chairman Sam Olens said that the county would take "immediate action" if the allegations of illegal employment prove to be accurate, but added that right now they are only allegations. Jose Alvarez may have looked like just another bricklayer, but he has been gathering evidence for Jobs for Georgians that he says substantiates the group's suspicions that illegal immigrants are working under the watch of one of the project's subcontractors. Alvarez, who is also a business agent for the Washington, D.C.-based organization International Bricklayers, said he and another construction worker with Jobs for Georgians, Frank Lozano, began working on the site in November. Posing as bricklayers, they formed relationships with the workers and subcontractors and continued their work into January. He was told subcontractor Zebra's policy is for workers to show up at the job site in order to obtain work. But Alvarez said he could not get "a straight answer" from Victor Candelaria, a contractor hired by Zebra to oversee workers laying the blocks at the courthouse, about how much his workers were being paid. Alvarez said Candelaria's reluctance to give him answers aroused his suspicions. After discussions with other workers, Alvarez and Lozano learned they were being paid $10 an hour, as opposed to $18 an hour, which Alvarez said is the normal hourly rate. He said he soon found out there was a reason for the unreasonably low pay. "I have a recorded conversation with Damian Perez, a bricklayer from Canada with legal status, who told me that he asked Victor when he was first hired whether he needed to present them with his papers, and he was told no. He said all he would need to do is go through a drug screening and the safety training set up by Turner, and that was it," Alvarez said. "So I asked him why everyone was getting paid so low, and he told me Victor would take the checks issued to him by Zebra, cash them, then pay the workers in cash. He told them they were being paid less than usual, but that it was OK because there would be no taxes taken out. I can't say I was surprised, because we knew this was going on not only with Zebra but with others, but it was good to finally get it on tape." I find myself perplexed at the issue of landmines still being used today. They are indiscriminate killers and remain dangerous decades after being deployed, and long after the wars have ended, still killing people to this day, many of which were not even born when the war was is progress. Each year in Vietnam to this day, as many as 1000 civilians are maimed or killed by US deployed mines or unexploded ordinance. Mines being the most common cause of death or dismemberment. Tragically, this is almost 40 years since the US left Vietnam. I visited a small town in Southern Vietnam near the Mekong River. Near the middle of the town, surrounded by housing was a piece of land measuring around 8 acres in size. I was told that straying dogs and cows once or twice a year set off the unexploded ordinance left behind by the US. Acorn has its own Political Party other than the democrats. Above is a word cloud of the associations in the Bertha Lewis contacts list we received. Some are legitimate business dealings. Forest City Ratner, for example, is both bailing out ACORN and relying on its support for its construction projects. But others are more intriguing. The larger the name, the greater the frequency of the name appearing in the contacts list. For many years it has been speculated that SEIU and ACORN share a common foundation. This seems to suggest as much. In fact, in at least one appearance on the contacts list, an SEIU official has an ACORN email address. But were this picture a tree, the trunk would be the Working Families Party. Roger Stone has suggested the Working Families Party is ACORN. Bertha Lewis’s contacts list suggests as much. Lewis is both the head of ACORN and also the Co-Chair of the Working Families Party. As you can imagine, ACORN would have us believe that those are separate roles. However, information suggests otherwise and we also know that ACORN has a habit of creating political parties for its own ends. To understand how the Working Families Party is part of ACORN, we need to understand the concept of “fusionism.” I’ve written about this concept before and it is essential to ACORN’s political strategy. As I noted back in 2008, ACORN played a vital role in the Chicago area New Party — the far left political party that endorsed Barack Obama. From my 2008 article on Obama’s New Party ties: Fusion is a pretty simple concept. A candidate could run as both a Democrat and a [Working Families Party] member to signal the candidate was, in fact, a left-leaning candidate, or at least not a center-left DLC type candidate. If the candidate, let’s call him Barack Obama, received only 500 votes in the Democratic Party against another candidate who received 1000 votes, Obama would clearly not be the nominee. But, if Obama also received 600 votes from the [Working Families Party], Obama’s [Working Families Party] votes and Democratic votes would be fused. He would be the Democratic nominee with 1100 votes. The fusion idea set off a number of third parties, but the New Party was probably the most successful. A March 22, 1998 In These Times article by John Nichols showed just how successful. “[The Wall Street] Journal’s editorialists fretted last fall about how the New Party was responsible for a labor movement that was drifting leftward …. As [openly declared socialist] Rep. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) puts it, ‘If the Wall Street Journal editorial page goes after you, you can pretty well bet you’re doing the right thing.’” ACORN knows all about Fusion because it worked with the New Party in Chicago as if the New Party were ACORN’s political party. In These Times reported on February 17, 1997, that “the [New] [P]arty, with 80 members in the [17th] ward, many of whom are also active in the Service Employees International Union and the advocacy group ACORN, has begun to build a parallel precinct organization.” With the experiences it garnered in Chicago, ACORN knows how to deploy fusion in elections. That brings us to the Working Families Party (”WFP”) in New York. In this “fusion” system, candidates appear on the ballot lines of all the parties that endorse them. The WFP, thus, leverages power by selectively awarding its line to candidates who support its agenda. So, for example, Hillary Clinton in 2000 received 102,000 votes for U.S. Senate on the WFP line, meaning 102,000 people sent her a message that their support was contingent on her supporting the WFP’s agenda. According to WFP Executive Director Dan Cantor, this message gets louder down the ballot. “We brand our endorsed candidates right on the ballot so that voters who might not know the candidate still know how to vote on the important issues,” he says. According to Elizabeth Benjamin in the New York Daily News, Even the Democrats - who have become the WFP’s closest allies since the party helped them win a slim majority in the state Senate - are looking to distance themselves. They’ve got plans to build their own field organization. That would enable Dems to rely less onthe WFP’s controversial for-profit arm, Data & Field Services, which has drawn scrutiny from the city Campaign Finance Board. This is important because, following ACORN’s pattern of practice, the WFP set up Data & Field Services to skirt around election laws as a for-profit entity. Resolved Question: Lisbon, Europe and Ireland. Yes or No?

After reading an article on Yahoo News..and listening to other similar conversations and points (You could say agreements...) on the radio. I would like to see what people think in Europe itself. Apparently Ireland wants a Yes vote..apparently. All I hear is that it is good for business. The thing that I don’t hear is that it is good for the consumer. Now, in my honest opinion, I don’t want our country to join into something (With also the only chance not to) and to be damn stuck in it, with doing little or no help to the little person. This ultimately is the reason why we would join it. The article is short and sweet and I’ll just ‘c+v’ it: Business group Ibec revealed 84% of chief executives believe Ireland's rejection of the Lisbon Treaty damaged the country's international reputation. Ok, that makes sense that it sort of tarnished our rep with other businesses in Europe. But how about Europeans’? A study of 300 bosses also showed 98% felt EU membership had been important to the success of Irish business. They don’t say what businesses would prosper from this. I can bet you it won’t be the common small business. Nono, it will be the large (as good as) multi national company (Tesco, Dunne’s, Halfords…) that will get the best of this. I know Ireland will vote Yes this time around. I know it because I hear it everyday on the radio etc.. It is being pushed everywhere. And you know where it’s not being pushed? By, again, the common man. Protesters for this aren’t politicians, nor are they businessmen or women. These people are like you and me. And they don’t want it. But like I said many times before, the Irish are like sheep. Point and they will go. The government is trying their damn best to get a good stake in this treaty. And they will get it. One thing that has been bugging me though, is how persistent they are. Like a child, a parent will eventually give in if their poked enough. That’s what’s happening here. Vote? No. Vote? The House has passed a war funding bill which had tagged onto it a completely unrelated provision to hand over $5 billion to secure $108 billion in loans to the IMF. The chamber voted 226 to 202 yesterday to forward the legislation to the Senate, which may take it up later this week, reports Bloomberg News. The measure in the bill will also increase the U.S. member contribution to the IMF by $8 billion and authorize the United States to back the IMF’s plan to sell 400 tons (12.97 million ounces) of gold. It was placed in the bill at the behest of the Obama administration in order to fulfil the president’s pledge to the G20 in April, to contribute toward a $500 billion boost for the IMF, which it says will go toward “helping poorer nations” during the economic downturn. A third runway would increase Heathrow's capacity from 480,000 flights a year to more than 700,000. The Government's aviation White Paper made the case for expansion by citing figures showing that the number of passengers using UK airports would double to 460 million by 2030. However, the latest figures from Airport Co-ordination, which oversees take-off and landing slots at Heathrow, showed a small decline this winter. "This is a reflection of fuel prices and weakening economy leading to airlines making tactical flight cancellations," said James Cole from the co-ordination firm. But airport operator BAA, which has been working very closely with the Government on the plans for a third runway, insisted that long-term passenger numbers would rise. "History very clearly demonstrates that aviation recovers well from short-term events such as this economic downturn," said a BAA spokesman. John Stewart, chairman of anti-expansion group Hacan, argued that the changing economic climate meant another runway was now "a bit of a gamble", adding that the policy was "drawn up in 2003 when aviation was expanding and the economy was booming". This oral presentation will explain to you how “women in sport gain sufficient recognition by the media in the 21st century than in previous decades” and how this can still be improved. The relationship between sport and the media has become so close that without the media the sporting world would collapse. The main income for sport comes from the media, as the media attracts big money through sponsorship and advertisements. The money from this helps clubs to be able to buy and import better players to make the game allot more interesting, the clubs can also use this money to upgrade, build and repair stadiums along with giving the players salaries. Without promotion of sport through the media there would be no new young talent coming through and the sport would become boring and people would loose interest in it. Media has a large impact on games and often games will often be revolved around add breaks. Ever since sport has been broadcast on television games have been changed to attract a wider audience, like one day cricket for example was formed in 1977 because of the media influence to attract a wider audience. A quote from the editor of, the economist (20 July 1996) “The lure of money is already altering sport and will change it more. Increasingly games will be reorganised to turn them into better television.”(p 367). The Medias involvement in sport is constantly becoming more important. Sports relationship with the media started out small but become much closer with advancement in technology. Ever since the media has become involved in sport it has rapidly become a very profitable business. Sport was first introduced into the media in 1956 but had a minimal affect due to lack of communication tools and technology. Then in the 1970’s with the development of technology sport had another go with the world cricket series being televised for the first time to a television audience of 1 million people, from then on the relationship between sport and the media blossomed and were then inextricably linked. Quote Jacques Marchand (1994) “At the start, the marriage of sport and the media was a love match. It later became a marriage of convenience and today, with the advent of [global] television, it has become, in addition, a marriage based on money.” (p 367) Since the beginning of sport it has been male dominated and it is only really in the past couple of years women have started to gain some recognition. The messages the media send about women and women’s sport have a large influence on how female athletes and sports are accepted in society. Women have come a long way in sports from only being able to view sporting events if they were unmarried virgins or prostitutes to now being able to participate and compete in almost every kind of sport, but they still get almost no recognition whatsoever. Women often have to pose either nude or in bikinis due to lack of coverage and promotion. For example in 2000 to gain media publicity, the Australian soccer team had to pose nude in a calendar shoot. In the courier mail on the 12 of November 2008 there were only three news articles on women’s sport out of the thirty eight sport articles there. One of the articles was about tennis player Daniela Hantuchova here is the article I have highlighted the parts I believe that women in sport constantly have to endure (pass it around the room) look at the bottom of that one it says. “Hantuchova has sustained her carrier well after many years in which a battle to keep weight on her thin 181cm frame was closely monitored by the international media.” That is an example of the media controlling how sporting women look. The last time a female was on the front page of a news paper or featured on the news was during the Olympics, but still it was images of the girls wearing their tight swim suits or other tight clothes and only featured the attractive girls, yet another example of sexism. The other articles are about the Firebirds net ball team and it mainly spoke about re-signing Tasmin greenway the “English stunner” the article was alright but focused on her looks, And the other article was about the sports stars of the year with a tiny space in the bottom of the page and a photo of Stephanie Rice even though the actual article mentioned her once and was mainly about men. The media have so much control they can do almost anything they like, for example with the women’s beach volleyball they have changed the design of outfits to tiny bikinis, and use many different camera angles to let guys have a “perve” when the girls go to serve, there is a nice close up of their bums. Female beach volleyball has a predominately male auidence due to the media changing the rules to attract a male auidence. Women need to get more recognition for what they have done for the sporting world, often they are the higher achievers then the males. During the Asian Financial Crisis in the 1990's, the International Monetary Fund injected $20 billion into the South Korean financial market with the expressed warning not to bailout failing banks or businesses. With IMF oversight and financial backing South Korea was able to emerge from its financial crisis, but not without some major overhaul of their government-backed business model. The US now is in deep financial trouble, and what it once told South Korea to do, it is doing the opposite. The US is also running out of money. The IMF and the World Bank, usually assisting Third World Nations and Developing Nations, stand by ready to help, though they will make it clear, bailing out ailing companies is not the long-term solution to problems. You see, we don't like the idea of the US playing international police, butting into our lives everytime we try to do something to better ourselves. Byrne covered an area from Louth to Wexford, but said she had problems winning new accounts because of time spent in traffic. The company hired a new representative to cover the south-east of the country, but Byrne said the change could cut her sales by half and mean a €20,000 drop in her income. Byrne, of Lindisfarne Avenue, Clondalkin, Dublin, said she was called to a meeting in September 2006 where she was accused of having the worst sales record and being the ‘‘weakest link’’. O.K. just read on yahoo news how this little girl is being worshipped as a living goddess as is customary to the Buddist religion. She retired early and all that blah blah blah.... The seaplane operator, with headquarters at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, has not flown since Sept. 3". The Bahama Journal quotes Chalk's General Manager as saying "the airline has discontinued service into The Bahamas during this season." CLU wants the university "to begin drawing a line and not keep covering everything with freedom of speech." Israel lifted its sea blockade of Lebanon on Friday, releasing its last major chokehold on the country since war broke out in July. Fishing boats, their crews hoping to salvage what was left of the season before winter set in, chugged out to sea while water skiers and wind surfers skimmed the waves without worry for the first time in nearly two months. More important for the Lebanese economy, ships loaded with cars, food and oil steamed toward Beirut. Trade routes to the country were cut in mid-July during the opening days of the war, and Israel had maintained the blockade even after a cease-fire was declared in mid-August. The embargo has cost the country hundreds of millions of dollars in lost trade. Israel said it had turned over responsibility for patrolling the Lebanese coast to Italian warships, which would help the Lebanese Navy enforce a United Nations-mandated arms embargo against Hezbollah. Italy's foreign minister, Massimo D'Alema, said in Tel Aviv that the number of peacekeepers in southern Lebanon could reach 5,000 by the end of next week. ''It will be possible to have an agreement on the withdrawal of Israeli troops in the next 10 days,'' he told reporters. A spokesman for the United Nations force said that peacekeepers from Guyana, part of the earlier United Nations presence, had begun patrolling in the central and western sectors of southern Lebanon, while Indian peacekeepers were patrolling in the southeast. He said the force had turned over three sectors north of Naqura to the Lebanese Army. Agence France-Presse reported that troops from Lebanon's Sixth Brigade, supported by tanks, entered 10 villages in the region on Friday. Israel sent thousands of troops into southern Lebanon during the war, and they have been steadily withdrawing, though some remain in the border area. Israeli troops detained four armed men on Friday in a southern Lebanese village controlled by Israel, Reuters reported, citing an Israeli Army spokeswoman. But the Israeli news media reported Friday that military officials hope to complete the withdrawal before the Jewish New Year, which begins Sept. 22. In another development, Mr. Olmert said that if Lebanon fulfilled its obligations under the United Nations resolution that ended the fighting, then Israel would be willing to discuss Shabaa Farms, a disputed piece of land near where the borders of Syria, Lebanon and Israel converge. Israel captured Shabaa Farms from Syria as part of the Golan Heights in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. However, Lebanon now claims the 10-square-mile swath of land, which overlooks Israel's Hula Valley. When Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000, the United Nations, which marked the border with Israel, did not put Shabaa Farms in Lebanon. The land has been a point of contention since then, and is often mentioned by Hezbollah as a continued Israeli occupation of Lebanese territory. Resistance to Israeli occupation is the principal reason Hezbollah gives for keeping its arms. Mr. Olmert's remarks, made Thursday night at a meeting with the visiting Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, suggested that Hezbollah would have to disarm before any negotiations took place.
