Resolved Question: Which oil companies is it okay to accept funding from?

In another question I linked to a site (www.co2science.org) which listed various studies on the Medieval Warm Period. I was criticised for this choice of site as it has accepted funding from Exxon (which i already knew, having checked Sourcewatch). From what I can gather, the criticism is that any organisation which accepts funding from a big oil company is, by that very fact, dubious. Now, I'm not sure that's particularly true (it may just be that the company feels that the organisation's efforts or research is likely to coincide with its own) but if that's the case, then what about the research from the Climate Research Unit and the Tyndall Centre who as we now know have approached Shell for funding, as the email below shows: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ""SHELL INTERNATIONAL Mick Kelly and Aeree Kim (CRU, ENV) met with Robert Kleiburg (Shell International’s climate change team) on July 4th primarily to discuss access to Shell information as part of Aeree’s PhD study (our initiative) and broader collaboration through postgrad. student project placements (their initiative), but Robert was also interested in plans for the Tyndall Centre (TC). What ensued was necessarily a rather speculative discussion with the following points emerging. Shell International would give serious consideration to what I referred to in the meeting as a ‘strategic partnership’ with the TC, broadly equivalent to a ‘flagship alliance’ in the TC proposal. A strategic partnership would involve not only the provision of funding but some (limited but genuine) role in setting the research agenda etc. Shell’s interest is not in basic science. Any work they support must have a clear and immediate relevance to ‘real-world’ activities. They are particularly interested in emissions trading and CDM. Robert seemed to be more interested in supporting overseas (developing world) than home/EU studentships, presumably because of the credit abroad and their involvement in CDM. (It is just possible this impression was partially due to the focus on Aeree’s work in the overall discussion but I doubt it.) It seems likely that any support for studentships would be on a case by case basis according to the particular project in question. Finally, we agreed that we would propose a topic to this year’s MSc intake as a placement with Shell and see if any student expressed interest. If this comes off we can run it under the TC banner if it would help. I would suggest that Robert and his boss are invited to the TC launch at the very least (assuming it will be an invite type affair). Question is how can we and who should take this a step further. Maybe a meeting at Shell with business liaison person, Mike H if time and myself if time? I’d like to/am happy to stay involved through the next stage but then will probably have to back off. We didn’t cover the new renewable energy foundation. Mick Kelly 11 September 2000"" uea-tyndall-shell-memo.doc ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What "role in setting the research agenda" did Shell get, and why is it not a problem that the Tyndall Centre accepts money from Shell, BP and other oil companies, and lets them shape the "research agenda" but when a website accepts a donation from an oil company, then any study it so much as refers to is suspect? Double standards? .EDIT - @ Don't Panic. You wrote: ""It's a question of the driving force behind the research. Who wants the research to be done and for what purpose. "" ~ So it's okay for the CRU to take money from those nice people at Shell because their intentions are pure? (Like justifying emissions trading, eh?) The driving force behind my question? I want to understand why some people feel its fine for big oil companies to have a role in shaping the research agenda (when it's clear that their only motivation is making money from emissions trading) when the research agrees with what they believe. But when the an oil company funds research or a site that says stuff they disagree with, all of sudden that connection means we can't believe any of it. .---------------------------------------------------- EDIT @ Dawei Good point. I should of included a link to a cached copy of the (now deleted) CRU History page at the University of East Anglia. http://66.102.9.132/search?q=cache:http://www.cru.uea.ac.uk/cru/about/history/ As you will see, Shell, BP - and Greenpeace - are listed amongst their sources of funding (scroll to bottom of page for list). . more

Voting Question: Would someone please give me an informative breakdown on the subject of "International Relations"?

I'm choosing college classes at the moment and the "International Relations" course looked interesting because I perceived it as a class similar to International Business or International Governments or something of that nature. It was listed under Political Science. Here is the school catalog entry: "An introduction to basic factors, concepts and theory of international relations. The objectivs, methods and capabilities of modern states and other non-state actors will be surveyed. A study will be made of the institutional form of international relations, ideological orientations and objectives. Emphasis will be on the trends and transformation of the international system during and after the Cold War." The entry seems to lack a clear definition or picture of the subject I don't know what to make of it.Giving it the time frame of after the cold war makes it sound more like a modern history class. Can someone please explain to me what is learned in an International Relations course? Thanks! :) more

Resolved Question: About Boston University?

If you attended, visited, know students/alumni, live near BU, I would love to hear what you think or have heard about the school. Pros and Cons. How challenging are the classes (particularly Honors Program)? What is the environment like? Is the location good or bad (being in a huge city)? I know it's a long shot, but if anyone knows about the International Business program, particulars about that major would be greatly appreciated. Is it focused, or basically just a general business major? How are the professors (are they qualified? have they had real-world experience? etc)? I'm a high school junior looking at colleges and Boston U is on my list of potentials, so I would really appreciate any feedback from people with knowledge about the school. Thanks! more

Over the next six months this came in the form of sleeping disorders, nightmares, alienation or estrangement and depressions.   This is an unverifiable incidence since PTSD sufferers may not be aware (9/11). Whether or not a person can be medically classified as such, there is no denying that there are major emotional effects for many people.   A cataclysmic event has a subconscious consequence of making us aware of the fragility of our existence.   This is a moment to gain perspective on life and focus on those things that really matter.   Most prominent is the need to connect with loved ones.   Patriotism, altruism and religious spiritualism figure too. This has affected the lives of many new Yorkers who have an impact on us at a distance. And the list of heath related issues are huge. Who knew so much sickness could come from one event. This also started the war on terrorism the stated objectives of the war in the US are to protect the citizens of the US and allies, to protect the business interests of the US and allies at home and abroad, break up terrorist cells in the US, and disrupt the activities of the international network of terrorist organizations made up of a number of groups under the umbrella of al-Qaeda (War). this effected us by sending troops into Iraq and Afghanistan and taking them away from their families and not giving them real jobs and possibly effecting the products we rely on everyday. And putting money towards the war in a bad economy and wasting money.(War) as well as possibly make enemies with other countries by fighting on their soil and starting future wars. The war on Terrorism continues today and remains the main story in the media as people sit and watch the war against terrorism. More safety precautions came into play after the attack and these are still are a big part of our normal life today. The airport wont allow you to have any bottles 3 oz. or bigger (prohibited). The event also started the US Patriot Act. The Act increases the ability of law enforcement agencies to search telephone, e-mail communications, medical, financial, and other records; eases restrictions on foreign intelligence gathering within the United States; expands the Secretary of Treasury’s authority to regulate financial transactions, particularly those involving foreign individuals and entities; and enhances the discretion of law enforcement and immigration authorities in detaining and deporting immigrants suspected of terrorism-related acts (USA). We lose major privacy and have to be careful about what we say and no one wants to think while they talk. Another thing that was created after 9/11 was the Department of Homeland Security is a Cabinet department of the United States federal government with the primary responsibilities of protecting the territory of the U.S. from terrorist attacks and responding to natural disasters (United). So now the government is trying to be safer and make sure that another disaster like this will never happen again. On a last note the 9/11 event still effects us today and will continue to do so. So much pain and suffering has come from this event, with heath issues as well as a war. But has made America stronger with the USA patriot act and homeland security. So even in dark times there will always be a light at the end of the tunnel, we just have to keep going. more

Voting Question: Why am I the door mat?

I feel so unwanted in my family. See, like most couples, my parents wanted a boy. they had a name picked out and everything. Well, the first born was a girl, but they didn't mind, their next child was going to be a boy. They loved the first child a lot because there is just something special about the first one you know? The next child was me...clearly a disappointment in the gender department, and even more so because I was the second born....I didn't have that special first born quality to save me from the dissapointment of being a girl. The next child was a boy, yay! They were sooo happy. They got to use the name they'd been saving for years. The last child was a girl. She is the baby of the family, so that makes her special, also she is the bravest, most outgoing one of us all. My older sister is special because she was the first born, she is a great singer, and she gets good grades in school. She can be really mean when she spits on people and beats them up but it is acceptable because she is the oldest I guess. My brother is special because he is the boy they waited so long for, he loves sports, and he enjoys the family business [cars]. He can be snobbish because he knows dad loves him best but in generla is a decent kid. My little sister is special because she is the baby of the family, and is bold, daring, and really funny. She takes after my oldest sister in personality, being disrespectful and abusive, but it's just adorable isn't it? The feisty little baby of the family is just cute.... There is nothing special about me in general, not first born, not male, not the baby, just me. I've accomplished a lot in my areas of interests, going to international and national competitions in a few different sports...but if it has won me anything, it is jealousy and hate from my siblings. In general, my dad hates me a lot...I'm not really sure why but my older sister has a problem with me so that is probably why. His order goes Brother, older sister, youngest sister, then me last but some days I probably am not even on the list, even in last place. When I got back from a trip once over seas to a competition, instead of getting "Congrats on 3rd place, that's amazing!" I got "We had so much fun without you" from my siblings and "Now we have proof that you are the problem of the family, everything was perfect when you were gone." from my dad. I was/am devastated. I am not sure why, but I just adore my family...I even love my dad and my mom is the best person ever. I make excellent grades in school, and I excel in my few sports I am into still. But no matter how hard I try, I just can't make them proud of me. I can bring home a report card with all A+ grades except for one A and get chewed out for the A. Just never good enough. They/Them in this paragraph means my sisters and my dad. My brother is neutral and my mom [even though she hates me sometimes too] is the reason for me to live. Bottom line, I love my family but it kills me that they don't love me. more

Resolved Question: Do you think I have a chance to get into a I/O Industrial/Org. Psychology Ph.D?

I am graduating from a small liberal arts school. I have a 3.51 overall GPA and a 3.54 GPA in Psychology. I have a minor in Business with a 4.0 GPA. I took the GREs and got a 730 in the Quantitative section and a 620 in the Verbal section after studying for months for an overall score of 1350. I was in Dean's list for 4 semesters out 9. I started really slow. I am Latino and came to the States for my senior year only and then applied to college. My Freshman and Sophmore years were extremely difficult to me since I was far from home and was learning English. I used to go to class with a dictionary and write down some of the words the professors said because I couldn't understand them. I even have a D on my record (for Organic Chemistry) and some Cs (Other biology and chemistry classes). My GPA would have been way better had I not been a Biology major for 2 years prior to declaring my Psych major. I had a 3.8 GPA for my last 2 years and a 3.72 for my last 3 years (6 semesters). I have very good recommendation letters and my statement of purpose is very good according to my professors. I am part a member of PsiChi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, and was member of the Psychology Club. I also served as a secretary for the Psychology Club for 1 year. I was an E-Board member of another club as well and was member of two other clubs on campus. I was also a resident assistant for 2.5 semesters and a Summer RA for one summer. I have tons of community service experience and was also member of a (very hard) Research class in Psychology during one semester. I am a bit scared because of ,y early science GPA but I realize that I have a good curriculum overall. What do you guys think? Do I have a chance to get into a I/O Psych. program? Thanks for reading all this thing :-)In response to the person who said I should go into Business. Well, I'ver thought about it but sincerely my passion is Psychology. It is true that my GPA in Psych is way lower than my GPA in Business but taking a closer look it is not that different. I started taking Business classes in my Jr. year and at that point I was a different person than I was when I started taking my Psych classes. I have about 52 credits in Psychology. For the first 26 I had a 3.13 GPA and for the last 26 I had about a 3.91 GPA. For my Business classes I had a 4.0 for only 21 credits, and again I took those classes after my Jr. year. I understand what you say when you look at the raw numbers but when you look at the details it is not as different. My GRE scores tell you that I was a different student than I was when I was a Freshman/Sophomore. Thanks for the advise though. :-) more

Resolved Question: Who's on the invite list for Obama's "Job Creation Summit" today at the White House?

This is really interesting, and it tells us a lot about Obama, his administration, his ideology, and his vision for America. * Small business owners -- Not invited. * U.S. Chamber of Commerce -- Not invited. * Andy Stern, President of the Service Employees International Union -- Invited. * National Federation of Independent Businesses - Not invited. * United Steel Workers union president -- Invited * Teacher's union president -- Invited * Anna Burger, SEIU .. invited. * Big Obama Donors. Invited. * Opponents of Obama's stimulus spending. Not invited I'm sure there will be some wonderfully well thought out and highly educated justifications for these commissions. In the end, Obama will declare this dog & pony show a success. more

Resolved Question: is this real or fake? email from Ban Ki-Moon (UN Secretary-General)?

United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC) In Affiliation with Barrack Obama Campaign to Assist Scammed Individuals in the Settlement of Disputes through Liverpool cooperative Bank Plc. Attention: to you, The United Nation Compensation Commission (UNCC) that was created in 1991 as a subsidiary organ of the UN Security Council. Its mandate is to process claims and pay compensation for losses and damages suffered as a direct result of Internet Fraud and Iraq 's unlawful invasion and occupation of Kuwait . The UNCC in conjunction with the Obama Campaign on the 12th of October 2008 organized a confederation meeting which ended 2 weeks later, with the Secretary General to the UNITED NATIONS. This meeting was first held on the 8th of April 2003 by the then secretary to the UN. You can view this page for your perusal http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2003/ik344.doc.h This email is directed to all individuals that have been scammed in all parts of the world. In reference to the just concluded meeting, the UNCC in affiliation with Barrack Obama Campaign have agreed to compensate them with categorical payment sum of $800,000 each. In its decision 17" of 24th March 2006, the Governing Council established basic principles for the distribution of compensation payments to successful claimants. This decision was made two months before the resolution of the first installment of claims before the Commission. As stated in the Secretary-General’s report of 2nd May 2006, it was anticipated that the value of approved awards would far exceed the resources available in the Compensation Fund at any given time. The Governing Council therefore devised a mechanism for the allocation of available funds to successful claimants that gave priority to the three urgent categories of claims and which, within each category, would give equal treatment to similarly situated claims. Only when each successful claimant in categories "A", "B" and "C" had been paid an initial amount up to US$2,500 would payments commence for claims in other categories. Accordingly, the first phase of payment involved an initial payment of US$2,500 to each successful individual claimant in categories "A" and "C". However, for humanitarian reasons, all category "B" claims will be paid in full of a total USD$800,000. A total of US$3,252,337,997.09 was made available to 1,498,119 successful individual claimants in categories "A", "B" and "C" under the first phase of payments. A claimant includes every foreign contractor that may have not received their contract sum, and people that have had an unfinished transaction or international businesses that failed due to Government problems etc. We found your name in our list and that is why you are receiving this email notification. You are advised hereby to contact Sir. George Wood of Cooperative bank, as he is our representative in Liverpool who will be releasing your refund payment to you, Contact him immediately for your approved funds (USD$800,000). These funds are in an escrow account for security purpose, so he will transfer it to your provided Bank account. Contact the bank now for immediate remittance your fund. Resolved Question: Chances of getting into USC, Stanford, UCLA, Columbia...?

So, I did this a while ago but didn't get any responses; here I go again! I really would appreciate some feedback this time! I am currently a junior in a Sacramento Area public high school. High school is okay, average. *Freshman: 4.0 GPA (No AP's offered - Took all CP classes) CP English, Student Govt, Spanish 1, Biology, Geography, Geometry, Health/Safety. *Sophomore: 4.2 GPA (Took the 1 AP class offered, 1 Honors, and all CP's) AP European History, Honors English, CP Chemistry, Student Govt, Spanish 2, Spanish 3, Algebra 2. *Junior: so far 4.33 GPA: Spanish 4, Anatomy/Physiology, Student Govt, AP Art History, AP Lang and Comp, Honors Pre-Calc, US History and Sociology at Community College. *Senior: probably about a 4.5 GPA; Expected Schedule: AP Spanish, AP Human Geography, AP Govt/Econ, AP Literature, AP Psychology, Student Govt, AP Stats, and 2 more Community College Classes *Top 5% of class *15/515 Class Rank (expected to rise to top 5 or 10) *ASB Vice President of my school (ASB President next year??) *Intern in California State Senate *Capitol Hill/D.C. Congressional Page *Varsity Track and Field athlete *Speech and Debate Champion *Youth Commissioner in my city's government which handles over $700,000 that is dispersed to local non-profit organizations *Started my school's Junior State of America chapter this year, where I am President *CSF member *20+ hours of community service with a local Children's hospital *20+ hours at Elementary schools with Special Education Students *20+ hours at local Retirement Home *Extensive work with Make-A-Wish Foundation *20+ hours at local Rehabilitation facility *20+ hours with local campaigns, and a bit of time with other various organizations. *EXCELLENT personal letters of recomendation PSAT last year as a sophomore: around 170 (but very high in reading/comprehension), with literally no preparation. I took a sample one with kaplan that was very accurate with last year's PSAT results and recieved a 198; just took the real one last month and pretty sure I got over 200. I am extremely passionate about politics, so I would like to study Political Science and minor in International Relations/Business. Possibly minor in Spanish. So far, in order of preference, my lists are: Reaches, partially realistic: 1. Stanford 2. Harvard 3. Princeton 4. Yale Realistic: 1. USC 2. UCLA 3. UCB 4. NYU 5. Columbia 6. Georgetown 7. Pepperdine Do I have a chance at any of these schools? Am I on track? Is there anything specific I can do to set myself apart from other applicants? Any other suggestions? *And I know it may help that I live in California for the UC's, and I know they say it doesn't matter but for what it's worth I am 1/2 Mexican, 1/4 Armenian, and 1/4 Yogoslavian. ALSO... hypothetical situation: I got into USC and Stanford. Both cost the same. I LOVE LA, not so much the Bay Area. I want to pursue an acting career also, so obviously the best place for that is LA. I feel like I will enjoy going to USC more but then again I don't know much about student life at Stanford. Is it worth it the bite the bullet and go for the prestige and so-called better education, or should I go to USC and pursue my other interests? more

Resolved Question: Is Obamacare really just a hostile takeover of the United States Health Industry & has nothing to do with H.C.?

The U.S. Senate recently released its long-awaited proposal for a government-run hostile takeover of the entire U.S. health care system. Predictably, it includes a barrage of higher taxes to pay for the bill’s immense price tag. [...] All these increases, combined with state and local income taxes, would raise the average top marginal rate in the U.S. to over 52 percent. This would be higher than traditionally high-tax countries such as Italy, Spain, and even France. [...] Below is a list of the tax increases Congress and the Administration have proposed to finance health care reform. This list includes taxes in the bill passed by the House of Representatives, the bill the Senate is currently debating, and other taxes mentioned as a possible way to pay for health care reform. •An income surtax on taxpayers earning more than $500,000 a year,[1] •An excise tax on high-cost “Cadillac” health insurance plans that cost more than $8,500 a year for individuals or $21,000 for families,[2] •An excise tax on medical devices such as wheelchairs, breast pumps, and syringes used by diabetics for insulin injections,[3] •A cap on the exclusion of employer-provided health insurance without offsetting tax cuts,[4] •A limit on itemized deductions for taxpayers with a top income tax rate greater than 28 percent,[5] •A windfall profits tax on health insurance companies,[6] •A value-added tax, which would tax the value added to a product at each stage of production,[7] •An increase in the Medicare portion of the payroll tax to 3.4 percent for incomes great than $200,000 a year ($250,000 for married filers),[8] •An excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages including non-diet soda and sports drinks,[9] •Higher taxes on alcoholic beverages including beer, wine, and spirits,[10] •A tax on individuals without acceptable health care coverage of up to 2.5 percent of their adjusted gross income,[11] •A limit on contributions to health savings accounts,[12] •An 8 percent tax on all wages paid by employers that do not provide their employees health insurance that satisfies the requirements defined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services,[13] •A limit on contributions to flexible spending arrangements,[14] •Elimination of the deduction for expenses associated with Medicare Part D subsidies,[15] •An increase in taxes on international businesses,[16] •Elimination of the tax credits paper companies take for biofuels they create in their production process–the so-called “Black Liquor credit,”[17] •Fees on insured and self-insured health plans,[18] •A limit or repeal of the itemized deduction for medical expenses,[19] •A limit on the Qualified Medical Expense definition,[20] •An increase in the payroll taxes on students,[21] •An extension of the Medicare payroll tax to all state and local government employees,[22] •An increase in taxes on hospitals,[23] •An increase in the estate tax,[24] •Increased efforts to close the mythical “tax gap,”[25] •A 5 percent tax on cosmetic surgery and similar procedures such as Botox treatments, tummy tucks, and face lifts,[26] •A tax on drug companies,[27] •An increase in the corporate tax on providers of health insurance,[28] and •A $500,000 deduction limitation for the compensation paid by health insurance companies to their officers, employees, and directors.[29] more

Resolved Question: Is this proof that the rest of world doesn't think Obama is so great?

Based on this list of failures...maybe The Chosen One should stay home, and focus on fixing OUR problems! "...the list of disappointments is long: - official news from the Danish Prime Minister that the upcoming climate change summit in Copenhagen will not yield a binding international agreement. - Chinese President Hu Jin Tao made no commitments on balancing the yuan, and his government refused to broadcast live Obama's town hall on state television. - Despite a personal appeal from President Obama, President Hu also continued to oppose economic sanctions on Iran. - A key meeting in Singapore with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev yielded official confirmation that US/Russian disarmament negotiators will not reach a new agreement before the START treaty expires on December 5th." http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/11/white-house-were-not-in-the-immediate-gratification-business.html more

Resolved Question: Where should we move to?

Where would you like to live or retire in the US? The question becomes difficult to answer when family, friends and work are NOT part of the equation. Usually people relocate based on one of those three things. Most people want to live in an area with a low crime rate, great schools, a warm climate, affordable housing, plentiful jobs and good hospitals. Even so, not everyone will agree about the best place to live. Some people prefer mountains, some prefer the desert or maybe the ocean. We are still not sure where to go, even after going through the Forbes “Best Places to Live” list and other similar web sites. We are self employed and have a child with special needs. We are originally from Illinois but we have lived in Arizona for the past decade. We are looking for a change outside of these two states but we will likely travel back to Arizona in the winters if we will be living in a cold climate. Criteria We need to be within a 10 or 20 minute drive to a very good hospital. Must be within a 45 minute drive to a reputable children’s hospital. Must have excellent schools and a low crime rate. There must be fun things for kids nearby, like a big city zoo, parks and recreation. Fair weather with four seasons (or at least a little snow in the winter). Elevation must be less than 4,000 feet at all times (cannot travel above this altitude). We want to live in the country and we need a minimum of 7 acres for horses. We are looking for privacy, nice views and clean air. We like trees and green grass, not so much rocks, sand and cactus. Shouldn’t be too cold in the winter or too hot or humid in the summer. Cannot be further east than Ohio. Oregon, Washington state, Colorado, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee are all out of the question. Needs to be within a 50 minute drive to a big city with an international airport. We don’t want to spend more than $475k for a 2400 square foot house in nice shape on at least 7 acres for horses, just a little outside of town. Tax rates, short term economic growth and real estate trends do not concern us much, however we don’t want to live in an unclean area. I work at home and do not need to commute anywhere. Satellite internet and a regular telephone keep me in business. We realize that not all of the criteria can be met, so everything is listed in descending order of importance. Resolved Question: Do you also think that Google Home Biz is a scam?

So...I can't believe that I fell in this trap but I did...so just to warn others. There are more posts related to this on Yahoo answers, but a little older...so I thought I would refresh the info. There are a lot of internet money making scams out there, but these people get better and better. They advertise on what it seems like legit websites, they say they will only charge you $1 for shipping fees and they put Google in their name to make it more credible. Anyway, after one pays the $1 then you can see if you look carefully on the bottom of the page, with very small letters, that they will charge you a membership fee of ~79 monthly. They never say anything about this before you pay. Below I pasted the e-mail confirmation I got from them...and it says something about a membership fee now, but still not how much it is. People apparently got charged the amount after 7 days without even knowing why. Anyway...right after I signed up for it I called the 1-800- number listed below and they cancelled my account. But still I'm worried about my credit card...I'll have to watch it carefully! So...be careful out there...all these internet money making websites are scam! Resolved Question: economy text from english to serbian?

could you translate this text into serbian by tomorrow? please The London Stock Exchange Limited (LSE) is the world's oldest stock exchange and one of the top three stock exchanges in the world, after the New York and Tokyo exchanges. Founded in 1773 and reincorporated as a private limited company in 1986, the LSE is also the world leader in international share trading. The LSE operates a number of market products, including the main board listing, featuring more than 3,000 companies and including over 500 international companies, as well as the secondary AIM (Alternative Investment Market), established in 1995 as a vehicle for trades in small, high-growth companies. More than 70 companies are listed on the AIM board. After launching the Stock Exchange Electronic Trading Services (SETS) in 1997, the LSE introduced a new listing, techMARK, tailored to the specific needs of the high-technology sector and designed to compete with the NASDAQ index. With a total equity turnover value of more than £3.5 billion, the LSE achieved gross revenues of £149.8 million in 1999. The LSE is led by Chairman John Kemp-Welch and CEO Gavin Casey. Founded in 1773, the LSE reflects more than 200 years of the development of share-based enterprise. The world's first joint-stock company was created in the mid-16th century. Traditionally, companies were either owned by a single individual or through a partnership with two or more owners. While this arrangement sufficed for smaller businesses and stable market sectors, direct financial responsibility for riskier endeavors--such as the great trade exploration voyages of the period--were judged too precarious for an individual or limited group of investors. The organization of such a venture, that of a voyage to trace a northern sea route to the Far East from London in 1553, introduced the world's first shareholder-based company. Selling shares to a larger number of investors reduced the financial risk for each individual investor, while enabling the company itself to raise the capital needed to fund its operations. This first joint-stock company failed to find a northern sea route to the Far East. However, a meeting with Russian tsar Ivan the Terrible brought the company the exclusive rights to trade between Russia and England. The Muscovy Company, as it came to be called, became a commercial success, rewarded its shareholders with large profits, and inspired the creation of new investment ventures. The Muscovy Company served as the model for future shareholder-based companies. Investors contributed capital funding, while direction of the company's operations remained in the hands of its management. The investors, who were allowed to sell their holdings or buy more shares, were given dividends according to the company's profits. As more companies were set up following the Muscovy model, a new profession came into being, that of the broker, who acted as a middleman for trades of shares, helping to boost not only the number of joint-stock companies but also the number of investors. Adding impetus to this movement was the foundation of the Bank of England as a joint-stock company by King William III in order to provide funding for England's military campaign against France at the end of the 17th century. The shareholder system was given further support by legislation to limit and punish brokers for malpractice. By the 18th century, a flourishing "market" for shares was in place--so much so that the period marked the first stock market crash in 1720. While trading took place at the Royal Exchange through the middle of the century, the rowdy behavior--itself to become something of a tradition on the market floor--of certain brokers led to their exclusion. Instead of leaving the business, these brokers began meeting at Jonathan's Coffee House and other coffee shops in the Threadneedle Street area of London. In 1760, some 150 brokers founded their own club to buy and sell stock at Jonathan's. The following decade, in 1773, the members of the club changed its name to the Stock Exchange. As the individual broker members of the Stock Exchange began to establish brokerage firms, and the number of markets expanded, the Stock Exchange saw a need for new quarters. In 1801, the Stock Exchange began construction on a new building at what was to become its permanent London location. The following year, the Stock Exchange published a Deed of Settlement, formally outlining the operating rules and procedures of the stock market. If the original joint-stock companies were formed to provide funding for the many voyages of discovery, overseas trading, and foreign military campaigns, the shareholder-based company structure showed itself easily adaptable to the changing economic landscape of the 19th century. The Industrial Revolution, coupled with such major infrastructure undertakings as the building of a national railroad system, provided the basis for the modern period of shareholder-b more

Resolved Question: Can any one translate this from gobbldey goop to English?

business plans structure Title page: Title or heading of the plan and brief description if required, author, date, company/organization if applicable, details of circulation and confidentiality. Contents page: A list of contents (basically the sections listed here, starting with the Introduction page) showing page numbers, plus a list of appendices or addendums (added reference material at the back of the document) allowing the reader to find what they need and navigate the document easily, and to refer others to particular items and page numbers when reviewing or querying. Introduction page: Introduction and purpose of the plan, terms of reference if applicable (usually for formal and large plans or projects). Executive summary page: Optional and usually beneficial, this should normally be no more than a page long (or it's not an executive summary) - the key points of the whole plan including conclusions, recommendations, actions, financial returns on investment, etc., clearly readable in a few minutes. Main body of plan: sections and headings as required, see template below. Acknowledgments and bibliography/reference sources: if relevant (only required normally for very large formal plans) Appendices: appendices or addendums - additional detailed reference material, examples, statistics, spreadsheets, etc., for reference and not central to the main presentation of your plan. business plans - main body sections examples template This sample template is typical for a sales/marketing/new business development business plan. (A business plan for a more complex project such as an international joint-venture, or the formation of a new company including manufacturing plant or other overhead activities would need to include relevant information and financials about the overheads and resources concerned, and the financials would need to show costs and profits more like a fully developed profit and loss account, with cashflow projections, balance sheet, etc.) Where appropriate refer to your position regarding corporate ethics and social responsibility. While these aspects are not mechanisms within the plan, they are crucial reference points. 1.Define your market - sector(s) and segment(s) definitions 2.Quantify your market (overview only) - size, segmentation, relevant statistics, values, numbers (locations, people/users, etc) - make this relevant to you business 3.Explain your market(s) - sector trends, eg., growth, legislation, seasonality, PEST factors where relevant, refer to Ansoff matrix, show the strategic business drivers within sector and segments, purchasing mechanisms, processes, restrictions - what are the factors that determine customers' priorities and needs - this is a logical place to refer to ethics and CSR (corporate social responsibility 4.Explain your existing business - your current business according to sector, products/services, quantities, values, distributor, etc. 5.Analyse your existing customer spread by customer type, values and products/services including major accounts (the 'Pareto Principle' or the '80:20 rule' often applies here, eg., 80% of your business comes from 20% of your customers) 6.Explain your products and services - refer to Boston matrix and especially your strategic propositions (what these propositions will do for your customers) including your USP's and UPB's (see sales training section and acronyms) 7.Explain you routes to market, gatekeepers, influencers and strategic partners - the other organizations/individuals you will work with to develop your market, including 'what's in it for them', commissions, endorsements, accreditations, approvals, licenses, etc. 8.Case studies and track record - the credibility, evidence and proof that your propositions and strategic partnerships work 9.Competitor analysis, eg., SWOT analysis of your own business compared to SWOT analysis of each competitor 10.Sales/marketing/business plan (1 year min) showing sales and margins by product/service stream, mix, values, segment, 'distributor', etc, whatever is relevant, phased monthly, in as much detail as you need. This should be on a spreadsheet, with as many different sheets as necessary to quantify relevant inputs and outputs. 11.List your strategic actions (marketing campaigns, sales activities, advertising, etc) that will deliver the above, with costs and returns. This should be supported with a spreadsheet, showing cost and return on investment for each activity. Tip: If the business plan concerns an existing activity, use the previous year's sales/business analysis as the basis for the next year's sales/business plan. Adapt as necessary according to your new strategic plans. more

Resolved Question: Please..List of places to work for in San Jose del Cabo / Cabo San Lucas?

Hi I am moving to San Jose del Cabo and was wondering if anybody can give me a heads up on the places where I should send my resume. I am Mexican but was raised in the States for 13 years (so I am 100% Bilingual) then I moved to Mexico city, worked here for a while, but now I am moving to San Jose del Cabo. I am currently studying a Masters in International Business Administration, and have a Bachelors degree in Computer information System (field, which I am really not expecting to work in) My previous job was for HSBC as a Project Manager. I am looking for something related to Administration as this is the field where I have developed most of my knowledge but am open to any other job openings. I really don't know where to start looking into, except hotels (which I would love to work in), but I don 't know the names of the hotels down there. Does anybody have an idea of places where they are hiring people at the moment? or suggestions of places I can send my resume to? All comments are well received. Thanks for reading me out. Peace Out! more

Resolved Question: Are you voting for the Democratics? or Progressives or Working Families Party?

Acorn has its own Political Party other than the democrats. Above is a word cloud of the associations in the Bertha Lewis contacts list we received. Some are legitimate business dealings. Forest City Ratner, for example, is both bailing out ACORN and relying on its support for its construction projects. But others are more intriguing. The larger the name, the greater the frequency of the name appearing in the contacts list. For many years it has been speculated that SEIU and ACORN share a common foundation. This seems to suggest as much. In fact, in at least one appearance on the contacts list, an SEIU official has an ACORN email address. But were this picture a tree, the trunk would be the Working Families Party. Roger Stone has suggested the Working Families Party is ACORN. Bertha Lewis’s contacts list suggests as much. Lewis is both the head of ACORN and also the Co-Chair of the Working Families Party. As you can imagine, ACORN would have us believe that those are separate roles. However, information suggests otherwise and we also know that ACORN has a habit of creating political parties for its own ends. To understand how the Working Families Party is part of ACORN, we need to understand the concept of “fusionism.” I’ve written about this concept before and it is essential to ACORN’s political strategy. As I noted back in 2008, ACORN played a vital role in the Chicago area New Party — the far left political party that endorsed Barack Obama. From my 2008 article on Obama’s New Party ties: Fusion is a pretty simple concept. A candidate could run as both a Democrat and a [Working Families Party] member to signal the candidate was, in fact, a left-leaning candidate, or at least not a center-left DLC type candidate. If the candidate, let’s call him Barack Obama, received only 500 votes in the Democratic Party against another candidate who received 1000 votes, Obama would clearly not be the nominee. But, if Obama also received 600 votes from the [Working Families Party], Obama’s [Working Families Party] votes and Democratic votes would be fused. He would be the Democratic nominee with 1100 votes. The fusion idea set off a number of third parties, but the New Party was probably the most successful. A March 22, 1998 In These Times article by John Nichols showed just how successful. “[The Wall Street] Journal’s editorialists fretted last fall about how the New Party was responsible for a labor movement that was drifting leftward …. As [openly declared socialist] Rep. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) puts it, ‘If the Wall Street Journal editorial page goes after you, you can pretty well bet you’re doing the right thing.’” ACORN knows all about Fusion because it worked with the New Party in Chicago as if the New Party were ACORN’s political party. In These Times reported on February 17, 1997, that “the [New] [P]arty, with 80 members in the [17th] ward, many of whom are also active in the Service Employees International Union and the advocacy group ACORN, has begun to build a parallel precinct organization.” With the experiences it garnered in Chicago, ACORN knows how to deploy fusion in elections. That brings us to the Working Families Party (”WFP”) in New York. In this “fusion” system, candidates appear on the ballot lines of all the parties that endorse them. The WFP, thus, leverages power by selectively awarding its line to candidates who support its agenda. So, for example, Hillary Clinton in 2000 received 102,000 votes for U.S. Senate on the WFP line, meaning 102,000 people sent her a message that their support was contingent on her supporting the WFP’s agenda. According to WFP Executive Director Dan Cantor, this message gets louder down the ballot. “We brand our endorsed candidates right on the ballot so that voters who might not know the candidate still know how to vote on the important issues,” he says. According to Elizabeth Benjamin in the New York Daily News, Even the Democrats - who have become the WFP’s closest allies since the party helped them win a slim majority in the state Senate - are looking to distance themselves. They’ve got plans to build their own field organization. That would enable Dems to rely less onthe WFP’s controversial for-profit arm, Data & Field Services, which has drawn scrutiny from the city Campaign Finance Board. This is important because, following ACORN’s pattern of practice, the WFP set up Data & Field Services to skirt around election laws as a for-profit entity. Unfortunately for them, the New York Campaign Finance Board ruled Data & Field Services is part and parcel WFP. That means it has to comply with campaign finance rules. If it were shown that ACORN is joined at the hip to WFP in the same way Data & Field Services is, then ACORN might also have to comply and disclose — something it does not have to do now. As it stands now, with the close association between the two, a candidate can get on both the Democ more

Resolved Question: Air travel question ?

Guess the "travel" time from JFK (New York) to Perth, Australia if you book it the long route? (answer below)... My wife Dot and I are starting a Home Travel Agency. We are joining a very large outfit that deals with folks like us who want a home business. I used to work for TWA (Trans World Airlines) 25 years. Before they were sold to American. My job was International reservations for flights, tours, and cars. One day I was playing around with the computer and (at the time) found 25 different airfares between New York City and Los Angeles. Reason being a person can naturally fly non-stop or change flights thru many-many different cities (called "connecting" flights). You can also combine 2 different discount fares and fly "back to back" (Let's use a make believe fare for an example) Let's say a normal coach ticket New York to Los Angeles is $500. But, if we combine a New York "discount" $150 route to St. Louis, Mo. (change our own bag's or better yet have a small carry on bag) and pick up a $200 St. Louis to Los Angeles trip. Yea-yea I know some of you are saying, "Hey, blah-blah-blah !!!" OKAY GANG how about the person who flys "EVERYWEEK" ??? Or every 2 weeks? Let's say Mr. Fly-every-week work's that job for 20 years ? Hey kid's... NOW WE'ER TALKING $156,000 OF OUR PRETEND MONEY GOING DOWN THE DRAIN !!!!! All of you can call the airlines and get real money if you want. My point is, I just want to show you folks how to save money. Yes, sometimes fares are around for a short period of time. One time TWA had a $33 special St. Louis to Chicago one way for about a month. Now I'm not supposed to ask for your business here in Yahoo Answers... BUT... I can help a "new" friend with travel information if he or she has an up and coming trip they need help with. My e-mail address is attached to this... what ever it is. All I need is your dates of travel to & from and a list of towns your going to with how much time at each stop. I figure if I can help make your trip a bit better thats half the game won. Your going to find as you call around to different airlines and travel agents (say maybe 10 or 15 or so) your going to feel like you just dug a hole 30' x 50' and 20' deep in your back yard. Some of those agent's can really mess up your head !!!! (Phew-phew !!) >>>> The answer to the question on top is... 39 hours 55 minutes ! As I used to say (almost 95+ times a day) "Thank You for calling TWA, my name is Tom" more
