Business Day has been ordered to pay the costs of a National Intelligence Agency (NIA) application to block publication of a sensitive document, Intelligence Services Minister Ronnie Kasrils said on Tuesday. He said in a statement the Johannesburg High Court ordered Business Day not to publicise the document or any part of it. It also ordered that no other person was entitled to possession of the document or to publicise its contents without the NIA's authority and permission. Welcoming the finding, Kasrils said that although it was important for the public to have access to state information and the right to media freedom, there were clear constitutional and legal requirements concerning classified state information. "The intention of Business Day to publish classified information is highly unacceptable and unheard of in democracies anywhere in the world," he said. more
Moscow most expensive for corporate travellers - HRG survey
HRG says this highlights the need for businesses to secure a comprehensive and effective Hotel Rate Program.
The results show that corporates appear to be travelling smarter as they look to control travel costs and maximise their return on expenditure. A slight decline recorded in the average length of stay highlights this point, as business travellers look to reduce accommodation costs or where possible find alternatives to travel: one day meetings, video conferencing or reducing the frequency of trips.
This trend is further reflected by the growing number of companies travelling to emerging economies, as an increasing number of businesses transfer elements of their business to exploit lower operating overheads. These markets are expanding to meet demand. more

Challenging Israel’s war on protest Pip Hinman 13 March 2010 Bridget Chappell, an Australian solidarity worker in the Palestinian territory of the West Bank, was arrested by occupying Israeli forces on February 7 and threatened with deportation for simply engaging in peaceful protests alongside Palestinians. Solidarity activists have asked Australia’s foreign affairs department to intervene in support of Chappell to allow her to continue her work in the West Bank. Chappell was arrested in a pre-dawn raid for alleged “visa irregularities” — even though she had a valid bridging visa. At the time, Chappell’s arrest featured prominently in the Australian media. But since the Israeli Supreme Court declared her arrest illegal and released them on bail on February 9 the case has faded from view. Chappell is fighting to be able to continue her work in the West Bank with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) — a Palestinian-led movement committed to resisting the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land using non-violent direct action. She is also fighting attempts by the Israeli government to have her deported — the fate of other ISM volunteers. Israel’s “war on protest” — as Israeli daily Haaretz put it — is intended to undermine a joint non-violent campaign by international activists and Palestinian villagers challenging a land grab by Israel as it builds the separation wall on farmland in the West Bank. The arrests are in response to those organising protests against the wall. The last major confrontation between Israel and the ISM resulted in deaths and injuries of international activists at the hands of the Israeli army. The horrendous case of US ISM volunteer Rachel Corrie, who was run down and killed by an army bulldozer in 2003 as she attempted to stop a home demolition in Gaza, is the most well known. On March 10, the Haifa District Court began hearing eyewitness testimonies in a civil lawsuit filed by Corrie’s family against the state of Israel for her unlawful killing. Chappell told Green Left Weekly that she is very worried about being able stay. She said Israel does not want people, like herself, bearing witness to Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine, and its continued settlement building. She is concerned that Australia’s consular assistance has been minimal. Given the Australian government’s close relationship with Israel, a number of people have signed a letter, drafted by the Sydney Stop the War Coalition, urging the foreign affairs department to assist Chappell. The letter states that Chappell was not participating in “illegal riots”, as claimed by the arresting officials, and that she “was certainly not involved in the dirty business of scamming passports to assassinate political leaders – as agents of the Israeli state have allegedly been recently caught out doing”. The statement concluded: “We would like to know what Australian consular officials are doing to assist Ms Chappell. Recently I was terminated from my position of Regional Manager of a Wholesale Business in Canada. This is an international company including USA. They did some real dirty stuff to me including refusing to pay bonuses, refusing to pay moving expenses, refusing to pay medical expenses etc all of which were part of my employment agreement. What can I publish and what can I say or not say on the net (either blog or websites) without getting sued myself? Freedom of Speech, Privacy Law are issues that I am wondering about. Future employee's, shareholders, and customers all deserve to know the truth. I will take them to small claims court which in Alberta Canada where I am located the maximum judgement is $25,000.00. The thing is it will take at least a year to get it heard in court. If I can get the message out as to what kind of idiotic management not to mention crooks that they really are they might get the message and might make some sort of a reasonable settlement. What's the difference between International Business, International Relations, and International Studies? I can't really tell what the difference between them are. I'm Mexican, I own a laundromat here at the border. I studied college in the USA, I know laundromats are very common in the USA. As cheap as laundromats in the USA are, college students are sometimes too cheap to go to laundromat, so they often do their laundry at friend's house. Even so, laundromats are common in the USA, and they are very cheap compared to laundromats in Mexico. Laundromats are a luxury in Mexico, so they are more expensive. All of my machines are American, and they work with quarters. The machines work with 3 quarters, BUT the price of a machine it's clearly stated on the walls in HUGE BOLD letters; a machine costs 20 PESOS (1.53 US Dollars.) My laundromat is very close to the International Bridge, so a lot of American people come my laundromat. Whenever White people come, they look at the prices, they pay me, and I insert my quarters into the machines. It's a simple business transaction. Whenever Black people come here, they go straight to the machines, and insert their own quarters. I tell them they have to pay me 20 PESOS per machines, and I'm the one who inserts the quarters. Then they always start yelling telling me they are American, and that's the way it's done in the America. I am graduating from a small liberal arts school. I have a 3.51 overall GPA and a 3.54 GPA in Psychology. I have a minor in Business with a 4.0 GPA. I took the GREs and got a 730 in the Quantitative section and a 620 in the Verbal section after studying for months for an overall score of 1350. I was in Dean's list for 4 semesters out 9. I started really slow. I am Latino and came to the States for my senior year only and then applied to college. My Freshman and Sophmore years were extremely difficult to me since I was far from home and was learning English. I used to go to class with a dictionary and write down some of the words the professors said because I couldn't understand them. I even have a D on my record (for Organic Chemistry) and some Cs (Other biology and chemistry classes). My GPA would have been way better had I not been a Biology major for 2 years prior to declaring my Psych major. I had a 3.8 GPA for my last 2 years and a 3.72 for my last 3 years (6 semesters). I have very good recommendation letters and my statement of purpose is very good according to my professors. I am part a member of PsiChi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, and was member of the Psychology Club. I also served as a secretary for the Psychology Club for 1 year. For the first 26 I had a 3.13 GPA and for the last 26 I had about a 3.91 GPA. For my Business classes I had a 4.0 for only 21 credits, and again I took those classes after my Jr. year. I understand what you say when you look at the raw numbers but when you look at the details it is not as different. My GRE scores tell you that I was a different student than I was when I was a Freshman/Sophomore. So...I can't believe that I fell in this trap but I did...so just to warn others. There are more posts related to this on Yahoo answers, but a little older...so I thought I would refresh the info. There are a lot of internet money making scams out there, but these people get better and better. They advertise on what it seems like legit websites, they say they will only charge you $1 for shipping fees and they put Google in their name to make it more credible. Anyway, after one pays the $1 then you can see if you look carefully on the bottom of the page, with very small letters, that they will charge you a membership fee of ~79 monthly. They never say anything about this before you pay. Below I pasted the e-mail confirmation I got from them...and it says something about a membership fee now, but still not how much it is. People apparently got charged the amount after 7 days without even knowing why. Anyway...right after I signed up for it I called the 1-800- number listed below and they cancelled my account. But still I'm worried about my credit card...I'll have to watch it carefully! So...be careful out there...all these internet money making websites are scam! Banks and their regulators want to turn that notion on its head so they can spin a smooth tale of how they would like things to be. Sadly, some accounting rule makers may be ready to appease banks and the politicians who back them. If that happens, financial results will change from a vital tool for investors to a vehicle catering to managers, regulators and employees. This would undermine the idea that the needs of investors drive markets, replacing it with a more corporatist outlook favored by companies and politicians in continental Europe and Japan. In other words, the goal of providing unbiased, impartial information about a company’s worth would be trumped by a company’s business model and the broader needs of the financial system. This battle over financial reporting is playing out in the debate over proposed accounting rules for how banks value things such as loans and bonds. The International Accounting Standards Board is hoping to have new rules in place by year-end. The Financial Accounting Standards Board in the U.S. is moving at a slower pace, though the boards hope to eventually agree to similar rules. Both groups have come under fire from banks and regulators in the past month, although the IASB has drawn the most heat. That’s happened even though the IASB has already bent too far to please the industry. Listen to Government In late August, French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde wrote to the European Commission decrying some of the proposed rules while saying the independent IASB must be made “more responsive” to government wishes. The accounting-rule changes should gauge the worth of a company’s holdings based on its business model, according to a letter from the ABA last month. This would allow banks to overlook short-term changes in the value of a security because they decide to call themselves a long-term holder. No. 1 Audience The rules should also “improve the decision usefulness and relevance of financial reporting for stakeholders, including prudential regulators,” according to a document issued last month by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, a group whose members are central banks. In other words, investors should no longer think that they are the main audience for financial statements. The practical result of such approaches would be to allow banks to report smoother results that supposedly reflect their long-term prospects. For banks, smoother profits would presumably lead to higher share prices. For regulators, less volatile results would supposedly make it easier to maintain financial stability. The problem, as investors know, is that life, and markets, aren’t smooth. Conditions change, as do financial values. Because of this, investors need financial statements that provide information about the current state of a company’s business and worth. The past two years, replete with unexpected failures of supposedly solid firms like Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., have shown how vital that is. Creditors Count Plus, investors aren’t just shareholders. They include creditors such as bondholders, who need to know what a company is worth today in case it goes under. Banks argue that their intent should matter. If a bank plans to hold, rather than trade, a security, it shouldn’t have to worry about daily fluctuations in its value, they say. Both the IASB and FASB have given ground to this business- model view, although the FASB’s changes aren’t as onerous for investors. The IASB, on the other hand, wants to give banks more chances to show holdings at their historical cost. In doing so, it also plans, unlike the FASB, to allow banks to completely ignore changes in the market value of some securities. This may result in banks reporting puffed-up equity, giving investors a false sense of comfort.
