Eating healthy when dining out is getting easier

Like Rock Creek, some restaurants are building their business around a more healthful model. Seasons 52, which has five locations in Florida and two in Atlanta, Georgia, takes a lighter approach to dining by featuring fresh foods that rotate with the seasons and dishes that contain a maximum of 475 calories. The chefs do this by taking out fat, lowering sugar and salt when possible, and relying instead on flavorful accents such as balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, garlic, and fruits. "We call it 'palate distraction,'" explains Clifford Pleau, director of culinary development. "If you can give the mouth something else to focus on, it says, 'Wow! Minimum Wage Increase May Affect Small Businesses in West Texas

So if local businesses want to compete in the job market they have to put up more cash to get the sought after employees.

"Well, it really hasn't had that much impact on us, because we have been paying starting employees at more that minimum wage for quite a while now," Russell Johnson, Manager for La Casa Verde Nursery, said.

La Casa Verde Nursery has been paying more than minimum wage to make sure they keep their employees. At any time, they have anywhere from 10 to 15 employees on the job.

"We do want to attract quality employees and we do realize our employees do have to make a living and they have families to feed and their expenses, whether it's gasoline or groceries have gone up, so we have to pay more than minimum wage and have for quite a while," Johnson said. more

What happens to a treaty or other agreement after a country experiences a revolution? I assume that since the new government or governments are not signatories to the original agreement, they can take the opportunity to accept, change, or throw out all old business--and that the foreign signatories would also be able to take the opportunity to change or eliminate the treaties. Open Question: What to take at A-level?

I had initially decided to take business studies as a course at A level however, the school that I'm planning on going to took it out of the ciriculum for next year because not enough people wanted to take it. I then had decided to take economics as my next choice which I'm not entirely sure about so could somebody give me some details about what the course is like and about at sixth form. The other courses I'm taking are: Spanish, Geography and Biology and in the future I plan to go into work along the lines of international business perhaps as a P.A or CEO of a company (i'm aiming high) would you reccomend me take something different to economics?? I'd also like to add that I enjoy discussing topics about the world today however, I'm not interested in government or "parties". Challenging Israel’s war on protest Pip Hinman 13 March 2010 Bridget Chappell, an Australian solidarity worker in the Palestinian territory of the West Bank, was arrested by occupying Israeli forces on February 7 and threatened with deportation for simply engaging in peaceful protests alongside Palestinians. Solidarity activists have asked Australia’s foreign affairs department to intervene in support of Chappell to allow her to continue her work in the West Bank. Chappell was arrested in a pre-dawn raid for alleged “visa irregularities” — even though she had a valid bridging visa. At the time, Chappell’s arrest featured prominently in the Australian media. But since the Israeli Supreme Court declared her arrest illegal and released them on bail on February 9 the case has faded from view. Chappell is fighting to be able to continue her work in the West Bank with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) — a Palestinian-led movement committed to resisting the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land using non-violent direct action. She is also fighting attempts by the Israeli government to have her deported — the fate of other ISM volunteers. Israel’s “war on protest” — as Israeli daily Haaretz put it — is intended to undermine a joint non-violent campaign by international activists and Palestinian villagers challenging a land grab by Israel as it builds the separation wall on farmland in the West Bank. The arrests are in response to those organising protests against the wall. The last major confrontation between Israel and the ISM resulted in deaths and injuries of international activists at the hands of the Israeli army. The horrendous case of US ISM volunteer Rachel Corrie, who was run down and killed by an army bulldozer in 2003 as she attempted to stop a home demolition in Gaza, is the most well known. On March 10, the Haifa District Court began hearing eyewitness testimonies in a civil lawsuit filed by Corrie’s family against the state of Israel for her unlawful killing. Chappell told Green Left Weekly that she is very worried about being able stay. She said Israel does not want people, like herself, bearing witness to Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine, and its continued settlement building. She is concerned that Australia’s consular assistance has been minimal. Given the Australian government’s close relationship with Israel, a number of people have signed a letter, drafted by the Sydney Stop the War Coalition, urging the foreign affairs department to assist Chappell. The letter states that Chappell was not participating in “illegal riots”, as claimed by the arresting officials, and that she “was certainly not involved in the dirty business of scamming passports to assassinate political leaders – as agents of the Israeli state have allegedly been recently caught out doing”. Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia (CNKP) holds lecture series at Drexel School of Law and Hector the Pit Bull (Vic’s former dog) was STAR A panel discussion was held last night at Drexel University's Earle Mack School of Law titled The Importance of Creating a Safe and Humane Society for all People and Animals. It was hosted by Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia (CNKP) and Drexel's Student Animal Legal Defense Fund. The main point demonstrated by speaker Donald Cleary of the National Canine Research Council was "The dogs called pit bulls are just dogs." The star of the evening was by no doubt, Hector the Pit Bull, a rehabilitated former Michael Vick fighting dog rescued from Bad Newz Kennels by BAD RAP a San Francisco based rescue group and adopted by Clara and Andrew "Roo" Yori. Hector delighted attendees with his gentle nature, loving attitude, and grace under pressure (of public appearances) in spite of his numerous eternal scars from his former life. Certified by Therapy Dogs International, Hector has passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen exam (twice) and the temperament test of the American Temperament Test Society. He carries his own business cards in his vest wherever he goes and is free with giving affection and pets with any human nearby. His job is being a therapy dog and an ambassador for the pit bull breed. Hector has passed 10 tests to become a certified therapy dog. And no, Vick did not stop by to see how Hector is doing. Cleary went on to point out that the words pit bull and dog are not used interchangeably; arguing they should be he clarified Dr. Randall Lockwood's position that dogs cannot be characterized without humans. He also defined the difference between family dogs and resident dogs. The former being a companion animal who is treated as part of a family, living indoors, cared for and loved with the latter being dogs used for guarding or protection, often chained and kept outside with little, if any human interaction. Cleary also noted negative impressions about pit bulls have been perpetuated by the media and used the examples of two dog bite incidents. One, a fatal dog bite of a six year old child by a non pit bull dog received only two published articles nationwide while a story about a minor pit bull bite incident received thousands of articles written about it. All speakers were in agreement it is important to bring to the public's attention the positive stories about pit bulls, like Hector's. Leigh Siegfried, certified pet dog trainer and owner of Opportunity Barks, a Jenkintown based company, spoke about canine aggression and the fact it is situational. An example mentioned was highlighted in a picture shown of a pit bull chained to her whelping crate with an oversized sized chain and her nursing pups. Another was allowing a child (or adult) to try to engage an emaciated dog in interaction; this can be a recipe for disaster because a starving dog is much more likely to bite than want to play. She stressed it is people that need to control dogs citing the importance of training and the ongoing impact of a loving owner upon a dog. Opportunity Barks also holds classes in Philadelphia. Next was Elise Van Kavage, Esq., Senior Legislative Attorney with Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. VanKavage explained breed specific legislation (BSL) is in fact discrimination and called for legislation outlawing the practice. Pennsylvania is one of only two states that does outlaw BSL practice, thereby preventing townships and other local governments from enacting BSL. She dispelled the myth of a dog bite epidemic and quoted statistics showing a fourfold decrease in reported dog bites from the 1970's to present time. Moderator Stacy Coleman of the Animal Farm Foundation in New York stressed the importance of communities coming together to be the voice of the voiceless and reminded everyone to be respectful of each other's opinions and points of view when dealing with BSL. CNKP's Garrett Elwood introduced some local animal advocates including Dierdre Franklin of Pinups for Pitbulls, Allison Lamond from PAWS, Christina Voigt from ACCT, Claire Tillman, Humane Education Coordinator at CNKP and Alanna Burke from Saving Temple's Cats. We all know that when a political candidate gets huge campaign contributions from a corporation, or co-op of corporations, he/she will ALWAYS serve the needs of their campaign contributors over the needs of their actual constituents. (Corporate campaign contributors vs. voters) A perfect example is all the pork barrel spending we see politicians attempting to keep tagging onto recent Health Care reform bills. This proves as a perfect example of how corporate interests are put ABOVE the taxpayers who actually fund all these programs. We pay the bills, so why don't we get to control how OUR tax dollars are spent? Because corporate lobbyists are who put politicians into office through campaign finance. This is nothing new, but I think I have a solution to fix this rotting system, partially, and without being labeled as a 'socialist' by regulating how private enterprise conducts its day-to-day business. So here is my solution, since we won’t EVER get big businesses greedy hands out of our tax dollars, we can at least curb these ravenous money vultures, and this is how: ALL corporations have one primary objective; to generate profit for their shareholders, at all costs. This is accepted behavior in business these days, even if it means stepping on the tax-payer’s toes and screwing us out of OUR OWN MONEY to accomplish their primary objective, to return a profit to their owners. That is just the reality of business as usual here in the U.S. We can’t tell the corporations what to do because they would have PR firms screaming 'Socialism!' within seconds. But what we U.S. citizens need to remember is that corporations founded here in the USA in the early 1900’s like Ford, Dow Chemical, and Exxon-Mobil were created here, but these are NO LONGER owned by solely Americans. A majority of investors are now foreigners. Most of the best performers in the U.S. stock market have a higher percentage of foreign investors than U.S. investors. People like the Saudi Royal family, the Chinese, and MANY rich Europeans own a higher percentage of these corporations now, and THEY are the ones profiting off of U.S. corporate success. These U.S. headquartered corporations are not owned 100% by U.S. citizens, and outsource most of their work to the Chinese, so why are they treated with the rights of a U.S. citizen? They don’t deserve free speech in OUR country. We Americans should NOT allow ANY corporation which has over 50% foreign investor ownership to have ANY influence on our political system. When we allow these foreign-owned/U.S. based corporations, like Exxon-Mobil, to legally corrupt our political system through political lobbying, we are allowing international investors steal our tax dollars so they can earn more money per share. MY SOLUTION; we need new laws to pass to curtail corporate lobbyists. All corporations, organizations, or businesses who want to donate political campaign contributions should be REQUIRED to be 100% transparent. All the investors, stock-holders, owners can remain anonymous, except for their citizenship status and exact number of shares owned. Any corporation that is owned 50% or more by foreign investors should lose ALL rights to lobby our government. We cannot let the communist Chinese or Arab oil barons to affect our government any longer. Any PAC or hedge funds that donate campaign contributions should also have to report all their current clients/contributors and their citizenship status. The only time corporations, hedge funds, and PAC's should be allowed to contribute to our political system if they can prove they are owned OVER 50% by American citizens, if not, then they should be blackballed from our political system to prevent foreigners from corrupting our political system and steal our tax dollars. Foreigners should have ZERO influence on OUR AMERICAN way of life. So we can’t pass any laws regulating business, per se. We just go over big businesses head. We need to pass strict laws to regulate our political system and determine EXACTLY where and who exactly campaign contributions come from. Right now we only see vague data outlining which companies or industries as a whole contribute to individual politicians, but not who owns these companies making the contributions. My fiance and I are planning our wedding for this year, and we are paying for it ourselves. My fiance used to live with his two sisters, one is 28 and the other one is 41. The 28 year old moved out because she just had it with the 41 year old. She is a shopaholic and social maniac. She gets home from work and goes right to the house phone and chats the afternoon away. They used to split all bills, but the 41 year old sister would never have her part of money complete and they would end up without a phone line in the middle of the month. this has been going on for years until recently the 28 year old sister moved out. My fiance now lives with her and basically bails her out of everything because he does not want to go without electricity or water at the end of the month, he ignores the phone bill because he never uses it, but he ends up calling his parents from his cell phone number, which I pay because its on my name. Every month I pay like 20 dollars of international calls, that he makes because they don't have a phone line anymore because his sister could not pay her part. Even if he pays the whole bill, she wont stop calling and calling, long distance, nation wide you name it. On top of that she constantly asks him for money, I know its none of my business what he does with his money, but we are paying a wedding! and once we move in together her sister is not gonna learn and she's gonna keep on asking for money because she won't be able to support herself. She's got a government job, nice pay and everything that comes along with it, and still every month she struggles to make ends meet because she won't say no to expensive dinners, she won't say no to cosmopolitan at the five star hotel's bar and she won't stop shopping! Okay, so I am currently a junior in high school and I am researching universities and looking into the best schools, financially and by the quality of the education. I am originally from Illinois but I have been going to high school overseas in Milan, Italy since I was a freshman. It has been a great experience but I'm not quite sure if I will fit into the U of I community because of my diverse background and experiences. Although, I would love if it were possible. My mom recieved both her graduate and undergraduate degrees from U of I (champaign urbana) so she has been pushing me to apply there. Although she has told me once or twice that it is difficult to get in, and she's not sure I am able to. Honestly it was a bit of a blow to my ego but I would like to know what my chances are, and whether the admissions process will take into account the many extracurricular and other personal activities I have dedicated myself to. Below is a taste of my personal achievements during HS: I am currently taking the International Bacchleareaute (haha that is spelled wrong fyi) or the IB. This is like AP and is an accelerated program. I am taking HL math, HL English, and HL Chemistry although I do not plan to go into a Chemistry-related major. Since my freshman year, my semester grades have included all A+s and As except for this past semester I recieved 2 Bs. Our school does not include B+s or A-s because the IB does not grade this way. I received two Bs in Chemistry and Spanish. My courses include Economics, HL Math, Business Studies, HL English, HL Chemistry, Spanish and Italian. I am interested in entering the Business field or possibly communications although I have not quite decided. To continue this already pretty long description, I am in numerous extracurriculor activities and really dedicate myself to all. I have been in student government as Publicity official for my sophmore year and junior year, plus I am running for President this spring for my senior year. I am a member of NHS (national honors society) and have planned many charity events in conjunction. I am also treasurer of Prom Comitteee, and also do MANY sports. I was basketball captain my sophmore and junior year, and volleyball captain my junior year. I also play soccer. This takes alot of my time and I really enjoy particpating in everything. I won the most outstanding english award for 10th grade and most improved in physics last year as well. I am hoping to recieve both English and Economics this year and I am currently particpating in an international marketing competition with the well known company Media-Saturn. However, I was looking for career change as i grew dissatisfied with practicing medicine, and wanted to work more on a societal level and make more impact to improve both the educational and healthcare systems, something i couldn't do by only practicing medicine. So here’s my story….I have a B.A. in Design and Merchandising and I’m one semester away from receiving my MBA w/ a concentration in International Business.
