A park worker told police that he had found an empty vodka bottle outside the woman’s car.• About 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, police arrested four juvenile males for criminal trespassing after finding the group roaming around Ironwood Ridge High School, 2475 W. More owners and managers of small food and beverage businesses indicated, during the first quarter of 2008, that they are planning to increase hiring during the next 12 months and expect an increase in employees versus their 2007 statistics, according to the latest Small Business Research Board (SBRB) study released here [Buffalo Grove, Ill.] today. . . . Of the owners and managers responding to the nationwide quarterly SBRB poll cosponsored by International Profit Associates, 44 percent said they plan to increase hiring over the next 12 months. This was an increase of 28 points from the 16 percent who said, during the fourth quarter of 2007, that they were planning to increase hiring. more

Longtime Homewood icon Art Welsh dies

Mr. Welsh may best be known for serving ice cream to the community for 40 years as the owner and operator of the Homewood Dairy Queen, 1700 Ridge Road. He and his late wife, LaVerne, raised six children in a house they lived in since 1959 that was a block away from the ice cream shop.

Mr. Welsh's contributions to the community, however, go well beyond handing out cones, shakes and sundaes.

Among his many accomplishments was being a founding member, active parent, coach, umpire and longest-running business sponsor of multiple teams in the Homewood Baseball League. The league recognized his enormous contributions by naming one of the playing fields "Welsh Field" in 1991.

Mr. Welsh also was a longtime member of the Homewood Rotary Club and a former director of the Homewood Chamber of Commerce. more

The cleanup was required as a result of an oil spill that took place in July 2006 during the Hezbollah-Israeli conflict when Israeli bombs struck the Jiyyeh power utility 20 miles south of Beirut. Restoration focused on areas of high economic importance including commercial harbors, public beaches, and several historic sites. More than 36,000 bags of oil-contaminated waste were collected and more than 220 local laborers, including fishermen, were hired and trained to perform critical cleanup functions. In addition, local businesses were used to provide and operate heavy equipment, and also to supply support services. USAID says those trained now possess a valuable skill and will be able to serve as experienced responders for future oil spill operations in Lebanon and internationally.
