As a logical result of the cost savings, productivity goes up because people spend significantly less time on the road and attendance goes up."

Van der Zwan said WebEx is currently able to differentiate itself from the competition by offering collaboration solutions that are tailored specifically to individual roles. "But we’re convinced our competitors will have good products in the future, so we’re very loyal to the channel and deliver functionality through that market," he said.

While van der Zwan conceded that there will never be a time when all meetings are conducted online, he is convinced that there is still massive room for growth in the sector. He cited a recent survey by the company in which respondents estimated that almost half of the meetings they attended would have been better conducted online. more

Is the Economy Killing Small Business?

As I've written about previously, no one has quite figured out just to what extent the broader problems in the economy are affecting small businesses. That's why it's important to pay attention when news like this comes out:

More owners and managers of small food and beverage businesses indicated, during the first quarter of 2008, that they are planning to increase hiring during the next 12 months and expect an increase in employees versus their 2007 statistics, according to the latest Small Business Research Board (SBRB) study released here [Buffalo Grove, Ill.] today. . . . Of the owners and managers responding to the nationwide quarterly SBRB poll cosponsored by International Profit Associates, 44 percent said they plan to increase hiring over the next 12 months. This was an increase of 28 points from the 16 percent who said, during the fourth quarter of 2007, that they were planning to increase hiring. more

Longtime Homewood icon Art Welsh dies

Mr. Welsh may best be known for serving ice cream to the community for 40 years as the owner and operator of the Homewood Dairy Queen, 1700 Ridge Road. He and his late wife, LaVerne, raised six children in a house they lived in since 1959 that was a block away from the ice cream shop.

Mr. Welsh's contributions to the community, however, go well beyond handing out cones, shakes and sundaes.

Among his many accomplishments was being a founding member, active parent, coach, umpire and longest-running business sponsor of multiple teams in the Homewood Baseball League. The league recognized his enormous contributions by naming one of the playing fields "Welsh Field" in 1991.

Mr. Welsh also was a longtime member of the Homewood Rotary Club and a former director of the Homewood Chamber of Commerce. more

Resolved Question: How can shell executives do this?

Sunken Oil Tanker Will Be Habitat For Marine Life, Shell Executives Say With Straight Face HOUSTON, TX—The 1,080-foot, 300,000-ton oil tanker Shell Global Explorer, which sank off the coast of Newfoundland last month, will provide a welcome habitat for many diverse species of endangered marine life, Shell Oil Company executives announced with a straight face Tuesday. The new habitat, moments before sinking. "In its new resting place, far beneath the surface of the North Atlantic, the Global Explorer is host to countless fish and an infinite variety of marine vegetation," a press release from Shell read without a trace of irony. "A ship that once helped run life above the waves now houses life beneath them." The reading of the press release preceded public statements from Shell executives. "We in the petroleum industry have long believed that we have a responsibility to protect and conserve the environment in our daily business operations," said Shell CEO Steven L. Miller to reporters in the face of all available evidence. "We view this commitment to projects that will conserve and protect the marine ecosystem as an important investment in our future." "At Shell, we're proud to provide a niche for the struggling denizens of our oceans," said Shell vice-president of international shipping Dennis Gallsworthy, who apparently intended his words to be taken seriously. Somehow maintaining his composure despite being able to hear the things he was saying, Gallsworthy added, "We have a strong commitment to protecting and preserving sea life." On Sept. 27, radio messages from the tanker indicated it had suffered extensive damage to its hull following an explosion, which pierced its overloaded crude-oil tanks. By the time the ship slid to the bottom, Shell public-relations officials were touting its potential as an artificial habitat, often while looking straight into reporters' eyes. "The many species of fish native to Newfoundland's Grand Banks have in recent years increasingly struggled to find feeding and breeding grounds," Miller said, as if Shell were deeply concerned with these circumstances and not, in fact, partially at fault for them. "We must take all available steps to help reestablish these species in their native waters." Hoping to both deflect blame and take an opportunity for self-promotion, Miller took aim at the commercial fishing industry without so much as a smirk. "The Global Explorer's new resting place will provide shelter for countless threatened, often over-harvested fish," he said. "At Shell, we're proud to use our multibillion-dollar, globe-spanning resources to aid a worthy environmental cause." Not all press reaction has been positive. "Once again, Shell has demonstrated its unique brand of environmentalism, this time to the life of our planet's oceans," Mother Jones environmental reporter Neil Taylor said Tuesday. "The sunken hulk of the Shell Global Explorer, which hauled billions of gallons of crude oil during its operational lifetime, will have an impact on aquatic life for hundreds of years to come." Shell reacted quickly to these and other statements, working with mainstream news sources to tell its side of the story. "Once again, Shell has demonstrated its unique brand of environmentalism, this time to the life of our planet's oceans," read a full-page ad from Shell that will appear in Wednesday's edition of USA Today. "The sunken hulk of the Shell Global Explorer, which hauled billions of gallons of crude oil during its operational lifetime, will have an impact on aquatic life for hundreds of years to come." "We're proud of what we've done for the planet," Miller said, possibly truthfully. "And believe me when I say that at Shell, we're committed to changing our world forever."James i know that since I posted it! What makes you think I did know that already? Why would someone post a news fake story like that? Think about it?! I know it's fake! more

Voting Question: URGENT! NEED HELP proof read my scholarship essay~~PLEASE HELP ME!?

NEED HELP BAD!! I am an aviation student and I am trying to write an essay for NetJets Scholarship I need to write 500 word essay on my Goals and Career Interests in Aviation and A Brief Statement of my Financial Need(s) and Situation I NEED PEOPLE PROOF READ THIS, PLEASE PLEASE change all my grammar mistakes or maybe change some of my wording, because I am an international student Here it is My name is Chung-Chiang Kao, I am a senior at Ohio State University. I am major in Aviation Management and Operations Management though the Fisher College of Business. And at same time, I am currently taking flight training at Ohio State University Flight School with about 70 hours of total flight time. I have chosen this academic degree to achieve my short-term goal to become an airport manager. At same time I will keep taking flight training and hopefully become a commercial airlines pilot as my ultimate career goal. First to show that I am passionate about aviation; I am an active member of Alpha Eta Rho (co-ed aviation fraternity), we always seek the opportunity to educate more people about the aviation industry. I took the board member position for the Aviation Spring Conference, trying to attract more people to interest in aviation. I also helped to found the OSU chapter of American Association of Airport Executives. I volunteer to conduct airport tours for younger kids at Ohio State University Airport, hopefully to inspire them to want to learn more about aviation. Since when I was young, whenever there is an airplane in the sky, I will always look up and wish that I can do it some days. As an immigrant from Taiwan, I did not have any opportunity to learn anything about aviation. Pilot is almost impossible to become because of lack of aviation school and flight school. Until I moved to the United States, I discovered that anything is possible if you pursuit your dream. I am currently living my dream right now from flying airplanes. If my financial allow, I would like to get my instrument rating, CPL and CFI. I have been taking more than 6 classes (20 credit hours) for the past 3 quarters, so I don’t have much time to work. But since I am an extremely hard working student, my GPA for the past 3 quarters is average around 3.5. My goal is to make the aviation environment better and safer. Aviation is a unique industry; airports and airlines are struggling to make profit or even not lose any money. Also I want to let more people know about how great aviation industry is and draw more people to help to make the industry better. I hope after finishing reading this essay, you’ll have a picture of who I am. Thank you for your time and your consideration. My father was providing my tuition because my mother doesn’t earn enough money. Due to family problems, my father no long will pay for my tuition. As the result, my mother will need to provide tuition for me and both of my sisters. And I need to start working to pay for my own living cost and flight training. Flight training is extremely expensive for a college student. Also, I have been taking more than 6 classes (20 credit hours) for the past 3 quarters, so I don’t have much time to work. Another reason that I am taking so many classes is because hopefully I can graduate earlier by cramming all the class together. By graduating earlier, I can save some tuition money. It will be extremely helpful if I have the money I need to take flight training so I can worry more about school instead of worry about money issue. more

Resolved Question: why are "we, the people of the U.S." doing this?

Bush Signs Oceans Legislation into Law WASHINGTON, DC, January 12, 2007 (ENS) - President George W. Bush today signed the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Reauthorization Act into law. Passed in the final hours of the last Congress, the measure strengthens current law by requiring an end to overfishing and by requiring that science, not politics, dictate how many fish can be caught per year. The legislation also strengthens penalties for illegal fishing in international waters. "The act sets a firm deadline to end overfishing in America," the President said, "contributes to replenishing America's fish stocks; strengthens enforcement of America's fishing laws; and implements international agreements on fishery management and the protection of polar bears." Environmentalists are pleased with the law. Sarah Chasis, director of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s Oceans Initiative, said, "Signing this bill into law is an exciting and significant step toward restoring our oceans. We hope that the administration will craft regulations that will bring the letter of this law to our waters." "Our oceans are in serious trouble and fisheries management is just a part of the puzzle," Chasis said. "We look forward to working with the President and Congress to tackle other critical needs, including passage of healthy oceans legislation to protect, maintain, and restore the sustainability and productivity of ocean ecosystems." * * * U.S. Completes Oil Spill Cleanup in Lebanon WASHINGTON, DC, January 12, 2007 (ENS) - The U.S. Agency for International Development, USAID, in consultation with the Lebanese Ministry of Environment, has completed a project to clean oil from 68 miles of Lebanon's shoreline from Byblos to Enfeh. The cleanup was required as a result of an oil spill that took place in July 2006 during the Hezbollah-Israeli conflict when Israeli bombs struck the Jiyyeh power utility 20 miles south of Beirut. Restoration focused on areas of high economic importance including commercial harbors, public beaches, and several historic sites. More than 36,000 bags of oil-contaminated waste were collected and more than 220 local laborers, including fishermen, were hired and trained to perform critical cleanup functions. In addition, local businesses were used to provide and operate heavy equipment, and also to supply support services. USAID says those trained now possess a valuable skill and will be able to serve as experienced responders for future oil spill operations in Lebanon and internationally. In addition to cleaning Byblos Port, a World Heritage Site, over 100 affected fishing boats were cleaned and repainted. The $5 million project was funded as part of the more than $230 million U.S. commitment to Lebanon for humanitarian, reconstruction and security assistance announced by President George W. Bush on August 21, 2006. more
