Missouri continues flood fight; Mississippi, Meramec still rising

VALLEY PARK, Mo. (AP) - Residents here are bracing for floodwaters this weekend that are already testing levees, closing roads and soaking homes and businesses. Torrential rains earlier in the week are just now making river levels surge west of St. Louis, even as residents in southern Missouri dig out from deadly flash floods from Tuesday.

"The center of the flood fight now moves right here to the Meramec River and southern St. Louis County and Jefferson County," Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder said late Friday.Valley Park borders the Meramec River, and residents are crossing their fingers that the town's $49 million earthen levee, built in 2005 to withstand a 100-year flood, will pass its first big test. The surging Meramec was expected to crest at a record 40 feet on Saturday - 24 feet above flood stage.Army Corps of Engineers spokesman George Stringham said some water had seeped through the levee, but the leakage was not unusual and did not pose any danger to the levee's structural integrity. more

State actively courts Michigan businesses

A Michigan business trying to garner certain perks or breaks from the state in order to expand its operations or add jobs has to first jump through a series of hoops.

One of those hoops involves seeking offers from other states to locate there. Problem is, sometimes those states offer sweet deals and the business packs up and moves.

A package of bills introduced this month would change that and provide other ways to help Michigan compete against states that have become aggressive in luring away local businesses.

``I'm glad we're re-evaluating this tool,'' said state Sen. Mark Schauer, D-Battle Creek, who supports the change.

Indiana Economic Development Corp. spokesman Mitch Frazier said his state has aggressively sought to bring in new jobs since 2005. more

Resolved Question: Is this a viable solution to curb lobbyists from corrupting U.S. government?

OK here is the problem with US government, it’s corrupted to the bone with greasy corporate lobbyist’s money who typically line politician’s pockets with money to turn them into their personal political puppets. That is no surprise right? Amazingly we Americans seem to be able to accept that our political system is heavily influenced by big business. We all know that when a political candidate gets huge campaign contributions from a corporation, or co-op of corporations, he/she will ALWAYS serve the needs of their campaign contributors over the needs of their actual constituents. (Corporate campaign contributors vs. voters) A perfect example is all the pork barrel spending we see politicians attempting to keep tagging onto recent Health Care reform bills. This proves as a perfect example of how corporate interests are put ABOVE the taxpayers who actually fund all these programs. We pay the bills, so why don't we get to control how OUR tax dollars are spent? Because corporate lobbyists are who put politicians into office through campaign finance. This is nothing new, but I think I have a solution to fix this rotting system, partially, and without being labeled as a 'socialist' by regulating how private enterprise conducts its day-to-day business. So here is my solution, since we won’t EVER get big businesses greedy hands out of our tax dollars, we can at least curb these ravenous money vultures, and this is how: ALL corporations have one primary objective; to generate profit for their shareholders, at all costs. This is accepted behavior in business these days, even if it means stepping on the tax-payer’s toes and screwing us out of OUR OWN MONEY to accomplish their primary objective, to return a profit to their owners. That is just the reality of business as usual here in the U.S. We can’t tell the corporations what to do because they would have PR firms screaming 'Socialism!' within seconds. But what we U.S. citizens need to remember is that corporations founded here in the USA in the early 1900’s like Ford, Dow Chemical, and Exxon-Mobil were created here, but these are NO LONGER owned by solely Americans. A majority of investors are now foreigners. Most of the best performers in the U.S. stock market have a higher percentage of foreign investors than U.S. investors. People like the Saudi Royal family, the Chinese, and MANY rich Europeans own a higher percentage of these corporations now, and THEY are the ones profiting off of U.S. corporate success. These U.S. headquartered corporations are not owned 100% by U.S. citizens, and outsource most of their work to the Chinese, so why are they treated with the rights of a U.S. citizen? They don’t deserve free speech in OUR country. We Americans should NOT allow ANY corporation which has over 50% foreign investor ownership to have ANY influence on our political system. When we allow these foreign-owned/U.S. based corporations, like Exxon-Mobil, to legally corrupt our political system through political lobbying, we are allowing international investors steal our tax dollars so they can earn more money per share. MY SOLUTION; we need new laws to pass to curtail corporate lobbyists. All corporations, organizations, or businesses who want to donate political campaign contributions should be REQUIRED to be 100% transparent. All the investors, stock-holders, owners can remain anonymous, except for their citizenship status and exact number of shares owned. Any corporation that is owned 50% or more by foreign investors should lose ALL rights to lobby our government. We cannot let the communist Chinese or Arab oil barons to affect our government any longer. Any PAC or hedge funds that donate campaign contributions should also have to report all their current clients/contributors and their citizenship status. The only time corporations, hedge funds, and PAC's should be allowed to contribute to our political system if they can prove they are owned OVER 50% by American citizens, if not, then they should be blackballed from our political system to prevent foreigners from corrupting our political system and steal our tax dollars. Foreigners should have ZERO influence on OUR AMERICAN way of life. So we can’t pass any laws regulating business, per se. We just go over big businesses head. We need to pass strict laws to regulate our political system and determine EXACTLY where and who exactly campaign contributions come from. Right now we only see vague data outlining which companies or industries as a whole contribute to individual politicians, but not who owns these companies making the contributions. We need to control which lobbyists are able to grease the pockets of political puppets. If they are not American owned (50% or more) then they need to keep out of our government. I have a BSc Business degree and now I'm pursuing a Master's in Int'l Business (distance learning). I can specialize in one area in my master's degree. Either corporate or social. Finance pays really well, ensures more job security, etc. International Development is more satisfying, and rewarding but initially, it does not pay well. Acorn has its own Political Party other than the democrats. Above is a word cloud of the associations in the Bertha Lewis contacts list we received. Some are legitimate business dealings. Forest City Ratner, for example, is both bailing out ACORN and relying on its support for its construction projects. But others are more intriguing. The larger the name, the greater the frequency of the name appearing in the contacts list. For many years it has been speculated that SEIU and ACORN share a common foundation. This seems to suggest as much. In fact, in at least one appearance on the contacts list, an SEIU official has an ACORN email address. But were this picture a tree, the trunk would be the Working Families Party. Roger Stone has suggested the Working Families Party is ACORN. Bertha Lewis’s contacts list suggests as much. Lewis is both the head of ACORN and also the Co-Chair of the Working Families Party. As you can imagine, ACORN would have us believe that those are separate roles. However, information suggests otherwise and we also know that ACORN has a habit of creating political parties for its own ends. To understand how the Working Families Party is part of ACORN, we need to understand the concept of “fusionism.” I’ve written about this concept before and it is essential to ACORN’s political strategy. As I noted back in 2008, ACORN played a vital role in the Chicago area New Party — the far left political party that endorsed Barack Obama. From my 2008 article on Obama’s New Party ties: Fusion is a pretty simple concept. A candidate could run as both a Democrat and a [Working Families Party] member to signal the candidate was, in fact, a left-leaning candidate, or at least not a center-left DLC type candidate. If the candidate, let’s call him Barack Obama, received only 500 votes in the Democratic Party against another candidate who received 1000 votes, Obama would clearly not be the nominee. But, if Obama also received 600 votes from the [Working Families Party], Obama’s [Working Families Party] votes and Democratic votes would be fused. He would be the Democratic nominee with 1100 votes. The fusion idea set off a number of third parties, but the New Party was probably the most successful. A March 22, 1998 In These Times article by John Nichols showed just how successful. “[The Wall Street] Journal’s editorialists fretted last fall about how the New Party was responsible for a labor movement that was drifting leftward …. As [openly declared socialist] Rep. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) puts it, ‘If the Wall Street Journal editorial page goes after you, you can pretty well bet you’re doing the right thing.’” ACORN knows all about Fusion because it worked with the New Party in Chicago as if the New Party were ACORN’s political party. In These Times reported on February 17, 1997, that “the [New] [P]arty, with 80 members in the [17th] ward, many of whom are also active in the Service Employees International Union and the advocacy group ACORN, has begun to build a parallel precinct organization.” With the experiences it garnered in Chicago, ACORN knows how to deploy fusion in elections. That brings us to the Working Families Party (”WFP”) in New York. In this “fusion” system, candidates appear on the ballot lines of all the parties that endorse them. The WFP, thus, leverages power by selectively awarding its line to candidates who support its agenda. So, for example, Hillary Clinton in 2000 received 102,000 votes for U.S. Senate on the WFP line, meaning 102,000 people sent her a message that their support was contingent on her supporting the WFP’s agenda. According to WFP Executive Director Dan Cantor, this message gets louder down the ballot. “We brand our endorsed candidates right on the ballot so that voters who might not know the candidate still know how to vote on the important issues,” he says. According to Elizabeth Benjamin in the New York Daily News, Even the Democrats - who have become the WFP’s closest allies since the party helped them win a slim majority in the state Senate - are looking to distance themselves. They’ve got plans to build their own field organization. That would enable Dems to rely less onthe WFP’s controversial for-profit arm, Data & Field Services, which has drawn scrutiny from the city Campaign Finance Board. This is important because, following ACORN’s pattern of practice, the WFP set up Data & Field Services to skirt around election laws as a for-profit entity. Resolved Question: Catholics against Amnesty International...?

I'm not a catholic though I attend a RC church and am considering converting to the faith. I'm in the process of setting up a business selling hand made rosaries (Rosaries for Peace) with all profits to go to Amnesty International. You'd think that'd be a good thing - but I emailed a big catholic literature supplier called cenacle.co.uk - and they told me they would not be prepared to supply me with rosary instruction leaflets because of Amnesty's position on abortion. I know the catholic position on abortion - though at the level of the 'local church' I find that each individual takes their own view on issues such as contraception, abortion, homosexuality and so on. I'm shocked at the response I've received to be honest. The rosary is increasingly popular with non-catholics and there are many more open minded catholics about...but I'm really disappointed in this response. Does anyone have any advice? Are there any charities that Catholics deem worthy?? It's certainly turned me off the church. I'll continue to attend but where I was hoping to become a full member, I really don't think I would like to now. Birthright citizenship is an antiquated practice that has been abandoned by nearly all wealthy nations and emerging nations (recently India and Indonesia) and by the majority of poor nations. It remains to be seen if this simple, uncomplicated piece of legislation can make it through the snake-pit of special interests and conflicting views of those in Congress and if the president will sign it. I one of JW's see things happening but quite naive on who really to contact in government to focus on something Jehovah's Witnesses have known for many, many years now and now the Pope is taking action right at that area we have been saying will come some day. We seem to be the only ones understanding what Revelation is saying about the United Nations and religion in special sign form. And now the Pope wants to give teeth to the U.N. which is sad and funny at the same time knowing what we know. The U.N. Revelation shows is to be given power to take all religion has away from it that mix in government which is a sin by Bible law. Those religions that like to control what government does by forcing their ideas into human laws is a sin. We see religion doing that daily in the news now. JW's only go from door to door but not mix in government to force our religious ideas into human law on you. We use the constitutional laws to fight for our religious civil rights but peacefully in courts not by war or by mixing in government. So there is two kinds of religion at conflict in the way they do things. Those who give you free will choice by coming to your door and those who try to force their will on you by mixing in human law. I'm starting at UGA this fall and I'm sure I'm going to either study abroad in England for 6 months or do the Walt Disney World College Program, but I need some advice as to which I should pick. I plan to co-major in Marketing & International Business. I want to study abroad just to live outside of America for a while, especially for the International Business aspect of my degree. However I would love to do a graduate internship with Disney and I've heard that doing the college program makes you way more likely to get a graduate position. Plus it's a paid internship and I'm required to have an internship for my major. And who's better at marketing than Disney? My mom wants me to study abroad simply because it's an all-new experience, but would it really benefit more to do that than to work at Disney? more
