Friday Links: Small Businesses Should Worry

Think because you are a small business, you are flying under the cybercrime radar? Think again. And your denial about that could cause you to become a target. Seriously. Read an interesting report on Security Focus about that.

Ya'll ready for this? K, cause it's one of those things that just baffles the mind. The DA of San Francisco released user names and passwords to the city's VPN in court today . . . 150 of them, to be exact. And no, I am not kidding. Read about it on InfoWorld.

Linux creator Linus Tolvalds has some scathing words for those in the IT industry. Read about it on CNET.

Small businesses shortchanged as Feds fail to reach contract goal

The federal government failed to meet its goal of awarding 23 percent of its procurement dollars to small businesses, according to preliminary 2007 data.

The official numbers won't be released until August, but it appears small businesses received 22.1 percent of federal contracting dollars in 2007, said Calvin Jenkins, the Small Business Administration's deputy associate administrator for government contracting and business development.

That percentage was down from 2006, when small businesses' share was 22.8 percent, also short of the goal.

More money flowed to small businesses last year, however, because overall federal contracting increased to more than $436 billion.

Hitting the 23 percent goal was harder for agencies last year because they could no longer count contracts awarded to small businesses that were acquired by large businesses. more

International Business Career Questions asked

Open Question: what are some good organizations to apply for if I'm looking for a career in international social development?

I am a Canadian graduating with a bachelors of commerce this year, and I speak spanish and have experience working with a micro-finance institution in Nicaragua, as well as creating a business plan for a woman who was in the process of converting her home into a hotel, and teaching english to an impoverished community. I'd like to continue with similar work in international development in Spanish speaking countries, but I'd like to figure out ways of getting paid for it as I have only done volunteer work in the past. Any ideas? more

Hi, My name is Luis and I'm from Peru, 11:14 hs here and I'm trying to find some answers about something that i have been thinking about. In a week, 22th March to be exacly, I'm starting to study Medicine at the university. When I was in 4th grade (14-15 years old) Highschool I start to love medicine cuz I studied anatomy but when I enter to preparatory (15-16 years old) topics such biology energy etc get me mad and confused and the teacher said: "this is the moment when u have to decided what to study". I remember when i was child like 6 years old I begin to business on my school, creating the lil exchange school room after teacher class lol. My friends say that I'm good in business since that years. Actually I love to investigate about forms to get money, ideas to invest, histories of the millonaries, etc. I dont feel lethargy doing that, instead of the big encyclopedias of medicine that make me feel idk... My mother say that It like impossible to being rich instead of my father who inspirate me to continue and joking me say: "i give u 4 years to be rich lol". What I should do? My father give me the opportunity to prove one semester in medicine and if i dont like change my career to International Business Administration or Economy (i think economy is more complex). Please answer me. Im 17 now more

Open Question: Management of Information System (MIS) Gradschool?

Hey guys.. I need your help.. I live in AR, and I am looking for grad school that offers Management of Information System Program. So apparently, instead of Computer Science department, It is included in Business department. So far I have had two in my mind.. University of Arkansas in LR and Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. I don't have geographic preference as long as I can pursue my academic career. FYI: This is my senior year, and I'm an international student. My major is information technology with GPA of 3.56. I will be done with my undergrad by fall 2010 and I am one semester ahead (3.5 years). Funding would be my biggest concern since I will have to self support. I am looking for a school that can get my an assistantship. I have been working in technology field for almost 3 years since my freshman year, so I have quite a bit of both technical and customer relation experience. Please help. Thank you! :) more

Open Question: What career or advanced degree should I aim for with this?

Languages Spoken: English (Native Language), Spanish, Japanese, Chinese Bachelors: Communication Arts & Spanish I've also been considering an MBA in International Business or a PhD in International Studies or an MA in International Relations... and I am sure there are other international degrees I haven't even researched yet... The problem is all of those sound immensely fun and would let me achieve my dream of working with peoples of other cultures... So... I can't pick. I don't mind if I live in the US or elsewhere or travel all the time. What would you advise? Also, if I were to add a 5th language, would you recommend Russian, Arabic, or French? I am still young (20s) so if you think I should learn more than just one in the last sentence, please let me know which and why. Thank you very much! more

Open Question: Am I too picky? Is what I'm looking for out there?

I am nearing the point in life, where one moves to the next step. Out of the house of the parents, and into the real world. As part of this I have been thinking about a lot of things. I am considering going into international business to get to work and live in other countries. I also am considering Business finance, because it would allow me to live and work in the United States, to find someone to love, and make enough money to travel. I am looking for someone who. Does not do drugs. If they have done the "hardcore" drugs, such as heroin, LSD, Cocaine, I want nothing to do with them. If they have smoked Marijuana a few times, that doesn't matter as much, so long as they won't do it again. It is unhealthy, and manipulates the mind, I want someone who is in control of them self. One who does not smoke cigarettes, as smoke irritates my lungs, even highly dense fog will irritate my lungs. If I do not crack open the bathroom door when I take a shower, I can literally choke on steam. I would prefer one that is not an alcoholic, but if they drink on occasion I could deal with that. I am looking for one that enjoys the outdoors, walking, hiking, camping, sitting outside and enjoying the evening for what it is. I am a virgin, I would prefer a woman that is a virgin, because I don't want to be compared. Am I asking for too much? Are my expectations too high? Should I go into International Business, and just focus on a career? more

Voting Question: pursuing a degree in international business.......?

I have been thinking about going back to school a lot lately. I am very interested in world issues and traveling. Also, I can speak, English, Mandarin, and Spanish. So, I have thought about getting a degree in international business. Do you think this will open a lot of doors for me on the job market? How much money will I expect to make and also what careers can I be hired for? Also, is it practical to expect a job that requires a lot of traveling? Finally, does anyone know the best schools in Latin America to get a degree in this (preferably fairly inexpensive)? more

Voting Question: Help?! I'm new with all this... Air Force Wife?!?

Hi, so my name is Sarah and I'm French. I met my wonderful boyfriend on a plane last summer while I was going on vacation in the States and he was going back home on leave. He's an American, currently stationed in Europe. Anyway, we've been together since the life-changing plane ride and it's been the most fantastic time of my life. He always hints at the fact that he wants to get down on his knee and propose to me! Luckily, I'm a good student and I got scolarship to finish my Bachelors degree in the States. I'm moving there in the fall. My boyfriend just re-took the ASVAP and is now waiting for the new list of jobs to come in his base so he can crosstrain. I'm nervous that he won't be stationed in the same state as me. But anyway, love's stronger! However, I was wondering what it was like to be engaged/married to an Air Force man? If I'm on a student visa in the States, can we still get married whenever we want or it'd be considered fraud visa? Also, I want a career as a profesor or in international business but I'm slowly realizing this will be hard to balance since we'll be fully depending on his job. That's a bummer. :-( Have any of you ladies been able to have both the successful career and the marriage?! What are the pros and cons of being married to your Air Force Man?! I love mine to death and I don't care about the flaws his job may have, I just want to be fully informed about what's gonna happened to me next since I'm relatively new to this whole Air Force world. (I had never heard about it until I sat next to him on that plane!) more

Resolved Question: motivation. who can check?

guys, i have written a motivation to study at the university. who can check it? i also would like to heard a critics and something what i need to change or add or remove. please, help me. motivation is very important. Dear Sir or Madam, I am Evelina and I come from Latvia and currently I am living in the UK. I graduated from the gymnasium last year. I have heard a lot about Scotland, its culture and traditions. Some of my friends, who study there, have told me many interesting things about this part of England. Having read some articles and heard some reviews from others, I decided that Scotland is the best option for me. Since I love geography and traveling, I would like to be in touch with English culture, its architecture, lifestyle, interesting people, and find myself there. I have always been interested in business, administration and IT. That is why I have chosen Scotland as a place where I can study it. And therefore, this is the best place for me to find myself in this sphere, because I am an enthusiastic, with a love of people and a determination to succeed. I imagine a career which is: fast moving, gives me the opportunity for rapid promotion, is logical and practical, provides the chance to work wherever I want.I have always enjoyed learning about business. I found it fascinating. So it is quite easy for me to talk about my career ambitions (business) and what I want to do (be employed in the field of business and IT). What concerns my traits, I suppose that I am very well prepared for business and administration. To my mind, a business background is an excellent way to a good career. I have took a gap year after school and moved to United Kingdom for understanding myself – what I really want to do in my life, to improve my English skills and gain some work and life experience ,to meet new people as well. When I was at school, I worked as a secretary in the office one of my summer holiday in Czech Republic and I liked that job more rather than my current job (general assistant at the hotel). It is good I can make a comparison between such different part of work, that is why I decided that hospitality is not what I want to study and to do. Now, after long consideration, I came to the most obvious and elementary decision – business, administration and IT field is something that I want and what I need. I would like to mention my achievements in mathematics and drawing while I was at school. I am really good at problem-solving and figuring things out, at logic and analyses. I am engaged in plotting and drawing at school and also at the art school. And once, my figure has been noted at an exhibition in Macedonia. I am a good PC user (Excel, MS-Office) as well. I think, my decision to study this particular course, was affected by my father who worked both as a construction superintendent, and an engineer. He drew and designed a lot, work on the computer, communicated with people, and was responsible for many projects. I have always watched and listened carefully to how he did his job, and have learnt a lot from him. I think I got my drawing skills, my responsibility, my logical and analytical mind and the ability to come up with fast and right decisions, from my father. I played a lot of sports as a kid. This is where I have learned the values of teamwork, how to win, how to work hard, how to focus and concentrate, and how to find a balance between my time and priorities. And I suppose that the gained experience will be quite valuable for my future life and career. To sum up, I think to study abroad is an excellent way to broaden my horizons, to make new friends, to get not only theoretical but and practical knowledge. It is wonderful starting to communicate with international people and without recognition beginning to look at world a little bit differ. In my opinion, Scotland can provide a lot of opportunities for my future career. It’s the best place to study, live and work. Studying in Scotland would be a great experience for me. I am sure I will do my best there. Thank you for considering my application Yours faithfully, more

Resolved Question: where should I go? SDSU or UCSD? what major?

I am planning to either major in international business or global studies. Although learning what I would in global studies is of HUGE interest to me, I find that it wouldn't open many opportunities for careers as international business would (I'm not really interested in the $$ part of business mostly advertisement or management).SDSU isn't a great school but it has a major in international business and a minor in international studies, while UCSD has a major in international studies and its a way better school. Where would I be better off? Are my assumptions on career opportunities correct? Note: I would really want to to work for an international company and work to help developing countries and its people's (not live there for too much time), anything having to do with different cultures/travel would be GREAT! also i would consider jobs in promotions/advertisement/event planning/management as my second choice. more

Resolved Question: Should Olympic games (summer and winter) be played every two years instead of every four?

That way we would be able to watch olympic games every year: one year we would watch summer games, next year we would watch winter games and so on. Wouldn't it be good for everybody? Athletes would be able to put into practice their training more often, and would be able to participate in more games and won more medals in their sport careers, which would be a great incentive. Ordinary people would be able to watch the games on TV more often and also purchase their tickets to travel to host countries with sufficient time in advance. Host countries would benefit from the events and so that would help domestic and international business. TV Networks would also benefit from broadcasting the games more often. What do you think? more

Resolved Question: What job should I do?

Since graduating in 2005 I have spent time travelling and working in various jobs (please see my CV attached). I have a lot of ideas about things I want to do and achieve, but have been reluctant to follow a particular path fully for fear of closing off others. As a result I haven't progressed in jobs, rather remained static and moved around different organisations on a similar level. I'm not 'career driven' in the typical sense, so career progression for me is less about working my way into a senior position, and more about realising my potential, experiencing new things, learning and contributing to society. The following things are important to me in a job: Variety - this is really important. I don't want to remain static in a job, and I really dislike routine. I like experiencing new things; achieving something and then moving onto the next. This is the main reason that I've not fulfilled my ambitions since graduation, even though I've had options to progress higher in almost every job I've had. I feel like committing to a path will cut off others. And geographical variety is important too, not just variety of the work I'm doing. I don't like being sat in front of a computer all day doing repetitive tasks. I really enjoy travel, seeing new places, learning about different cultures, meeting new people. Working abroad or being in a job that involves international travel would be good. Altruism - I don't see a job as a means to money alone. I need money to live (obviously) and I do want to be more than comfortable financially, but I want to feel like I've achieved something positive with my day - not just making money for people. I enjoy working with people and helping individuals, but I’m not sure if that type of career (e.g. social work) would meet my needs. I imagine that, again, I’d feel tied down to one path, to a specific ‘career’. I feel like I may be happier achieving things on a bigger scale, that help lots of people. Public sector or charity work appeals to me more than the private sector for this reason. However, I get very frustrated by bureaucracy and I'm attracted by the freedom and potential to achieve that the private sector offers. Creativity – I feel like a creative job would stimulate me far more than the opposite (though I am quite an analytical person). I like writing, and I have a lot of ideas. People – Ironically the jobs that I’ve enjoyed most have been the worst match to my ambitions. E.g. a call centre in Australia and admin work at Greene King. This is because the people I’ve worked with quickly became friends, and the working environment was very social. Here are some of the jobs/career paths I’m considering: Journalism – magazine journalism, BBC etc International development/politics – working for an MP, civil service Charity work (e.g. lobbyist, researching) – Oxfam, Amnesty International etc Post graduate study (e.g. MA in Politics) Research (e.g. doctorate) Teaching English as a foreign language International work (e.g. UN, disaster recovery) Volunteering overseas (e.g. VSO – teaching, community development projects) Writer (books, plays, poetry etc), travel writer, columnist Business analysis (my degree was in Information Systems. I don’t really enjoy this type of work and so haven’t pursued it) Working with young or disadvantaged children (e.g. duke of Edinburgh style outdoor trips) Starting a business There are aspects of most of these professions that appeal to me, and some of them I definitely want to achieve at some point (i.e. starting a business, writing, studying a masters, volunteering abroad). However, there’s not really one career path that stands out above the rest, and I’m not sure what the best direction to go in is at this point in my career. Can you recommend any career paths/jobs that would suit my aspirations? Do you have any advice about how to resolve my fears about not pursuing potentially interesting paths? Can you advise me on the most logical/best career move at this stage, which would allow me to gain a wide breadth of experience and then to specialise or move into different areas in the future? I think it’s important that I don’t waste time in jobs that don’t contribute anything to my goals/CV: is there a logical job type that would allow me to build up useful experience while I’m working out what to do longer-term, and that might help me decide this? Perhaps TEFL? more

Resolved Question: I'm stuck in a rut and I don't know what to do?

I'm 25 years old and I graduated from university 2 years ago. I work in insurance sales at the moment but it's not where I want to be. I find the job boring, tedious and unrewarding. Since university, I have applied to many graduate work schemes but I simply have no desire for them. I have a good degree in International Business and German. Also, I have worked since I was 16 in sales and I've just about had enough of it. I simply feel I'm not progressing in life. I want to make a go out of a singing career. I have a good voice and I was in a band a few years ago at university but it didn't work out. I put that plan on hold for a couple of years and want to reignite the dream! I also want to leave my country (UK) and go somewhere like Canada to make a fresh start. However, I have no idea where to start. It just feels like whenever I get a new job, I'm always right back to where I started in life with my last job. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. . more

Resolved Question: Is the world a dark place??? PLZ help?

Dear all, I am really lost, and I need your help... I am only 25 years old, and I am very ambitious.. I have graduated from Business School, and I am currently working in a huge corporation where I make a lot of money, but it's not my dream. I have always wanted to make positive change, work somewhere where I can make a difference everyday by going to work.. So I hate working for such private profit oriented company. I am planning to quit and pursue a career in International Relations.. but I am scared... Let me tell you why, first because many people who work in the UN had told me that it's the same everyone, and that there is corruption everywhere and it is not going to be different... Second, I am in a relationship with this wondefull guy.. I think he's the one.. I'm crazy about him and I'm going to have to go abroad to study and follow my dream.. I dont know if we can survive a distant relationship.. SO I have a question for all of you... Do dreams come true? Can we really make a difference..??? I am very very ambitious and I have so many goals.. but I am starting to think..... What if I become a bit less ambitious, and maybe get married, and have kids like normal people..?? What do you think? Love vs. Career? Reality vs. Dreams? Money vs. Making a difference? more

Voting Question: Japan or China for an international exchange?

I've been accepted to an international business program (specializing in finance, etc). As part of the program there is a mandatory language study and a mandatory year abroad studying. I was wondering if anyone had some insight as to whether it would be better to spend my year in China or Japan based on the cultural experience, value to a career in business, difficulty of the language (I'm going to be spending a LOT of time studying language, but I worry as a westerner that I won't stand a chance learning Mandarin or Japanese), and what you think of the countries. I'm really stuck and can't decide between the two. more

Voting Question: Is it unrealistic and selfish of me to want to study abroad with a family?

I'm in my last year of college and have found an opportunity with the university to study abroad in Spain. I'm a business admin major with a focus on international business. I'm at an intermediate level in Spanish currently and the program is a language intensive program that lasts two weeks. I'll have to take a private student loan for $3500. I was set to study abroad in Spain two years ago and had already put down the deposit and everything when I found out I was pregnant. Obviously I never got to go. My son is now two and I feel like my husband could handle him for a couple weeks on his own. However, my husband says that its stupid and selfish for me to want to go? I've always wanted to travel out of the country and it would help my career but my husbands comment has got me thinking....is it stupid? more

Voting Question: HES or duke university for master in liberal studies? i want to use the degree to eventually do my JD/MBA?

I'm a mom to 2 babies, and I graduated from an international medical school. However, I was looking for career change as i grew dissatisfied with practicing medicine, and wanted to work more on a societal level and make more impact to improve both the educational and healthcare systems, something i couldn't do by only practicing medicine. However, i want to attend a reputable university to be able to work with top firms, and i got nothing to show except my medical degree, to be able to gain admission at such schools. I live in North Carolina, and i thought doing a masters in liberal studies first would give me a good head start. It's fairly easy to get into, and good for me explore different fields and discover what i really want to do. It's also good on class times, which will be during evenings. That way i could still take care of my kids, and by the time i finish the degree, they'll be older, so i could go ahead and apply for the more rigorous degrees of law and business or government and business. What would be a better, worthy degree to pursue and would help me get in those top programs? Harvard Extension School or Duke Graduate School, both in liberal studies? I would love it if someone with experience advises me. Please help! more

Resolved Question: PLEASE translate to German...human translation!?

"Apart from currently studying law, I have been involved in attending criminal and civil courts in the UK and drafting reports about them. I have also drafted the code of conduct sheet for a society that I setup during my time at University which gave me the experience of doing some legal work – so I have good analytical skills. Every week I attend seminars presented by former Judges of the English legal system which has expanded my background knowledge in domestic as well as international law. I am an ardent and keen learner and have a great deal of groupwork experience and believe in team ethics. I am new to the field of law so any experience will be much appreciated and taken on board. Commerical law and Contract Law are two areas of law I am greatly interested in so any work related to that would be of benefit to me. Please refer to my Cover Letter for more information." "At present, I am looking to gain any legal experience without mentioning a particular field of law however I am greatly interested in corporate law for my future career" I graduated from the Vienna International School in 2005 with the International Baccalarueate and then went on to study in the UK where I obtained my Bsc in Business Administration and International relations. Currently I am studying a postgraduate study in law. "Apart from my academic interests (especially in international relations) I am a keen sportsman as excersing the body is like excersing the mind and this is essential to being a competent lawyer. I enjoy my social life and can easily integrate into an organization and its culture. I follow the media quite often and enjoy being a critic of it – views that I often share with my peers". more

Resolved Question: Career Crisis! HELP!!?

Well, I suppose some helpful background information would be that I am currently a college freshman majoring in Psychology. This is my second semester in school, and already I feel that psychology is more of an interest than something I'd enjoy having a lifelong career in. Which brings me to my point: I've lately become interested in being either a Management Consultant or an Entertainment Agent. Both deal with travel, which is a major bonus for me, and largely in communication. And, as they both deal with the marketing side of business, it would make sense to major in Marketing. I will be transferring to Texas Tech in a year and enroll in their business college to pursue this degree. Before I hear back from the advisor I emailed, I would like to know if double minoring in International Relations and Communication would be beneficial to these career choices or just simply a waste of time. Thank you! P.S. Would psychology be helpful as a minor, too? Just curious. It is still an interest, after all, but I think I'll survive without it if it's just ridiculous. more

Resolved Question: Would I be better getting my MBA or MHA for a health care administration career?

For the past two years I have been working as a financial analyst for a large company and I have always planned on going back to school to get my MBA after about 4-5 years of work experience. My dilemma is not whether or not ot go back to school, but it is what type of schooling I should go back for. As I mentioned I am working as a financial analyst. In college I majored in finance, international business & Spanish. After working in the finance field I have to come to like & dislike the field and I want to explore more options when I get my MBA. Specifically, I am very interested in getting either my MBA or MHA in the health care industry - I would like to pursue a career in Health Care Administration/Management. That being said, my question has three parts. 1 - Being a finance major, is a career in health care administration/management a viable option? What sort of preparation or resources should I be looking into to gain better knowledge of the field? 2 - What is a typical career path for someone in the health care administration/management field? Where would you start? Has anyone personally been in finance and switched over? 3 - In terms of pursuing higher education would it be better to get an MBA or MHA (or other certification/degree) in order to join the health care admin/mgmt field? Thank you in advance for the advice! Jay more
