Student entrepreneurs build housing Web site

Three Chico State students are proving they don't have to wait until after graduation to do big things.

After nine months of planning, seniors Kris Rudeegraap and Ryan Sill and junior Jeff Schnepple launched their entrepreneurial endeavor All Rentals LLC in February.

A little more than one month after its launch, the AllChicoRentals.com Web site, which consolidates all housing rentals in Chico into one user-friendly, searchable database has received more than 10,000 hits and gets 300 to 500 new users daily, Rudeegraap said.

"We had trouble finding housing," he said. "So we wanted to make it easy for everyone else."

AllChicoRentals.com hasn't only allowed the men to address the needs of other students, but has landed them in the second round of an entrepreneurial competition with a chance to win the $50,000 top prize, Rudeegraap said. more

Luncheon to focus on business ethics

The Charleston Area Alliance will present a CEO Roundtable Luncheon Wednesday titled, "Ethical Practice is Good Business."

James Thomasson, professor of applied ethics at the University of Charleston and Jay Dewhurst, assistant professor of finance and business administration at the university, will be the presenters.

The event is at Noon at the Alliance's office, 1116 Smith St. The luncheon is limited to 30 participants and pre-registration is required. Cost is $10 for Alliance members and their employees, $20 for non-members. FCC’s Martin Pleased Comcast ‘Reversed Course’ On P2P

Federal Communications Commission chairman Kevin Martin said he was "pleased that Comcast reversed course" in deciding to work with BitTorrent, but added that the operator should commit to a specific date when it will stop throttling back individual applications.

The FCC’s other commissioners reacted favorably to Comcast’s initiative to make peer-to-peer applications work more efficiently across its broadband network infrastructure.

"We will need to learn more details about the recent agreement between BitTorrent and Comcast, but it is encouraging that broadband providers are listening to the chorus of consumer calls for open and neutral broadband Internet access," FCC commissioner Jonathan Adelstein said in a prepared statement. "These discussions should continue with other applications providers and the broader Internet community."

Commissioner Robert McDowell commented, "I am delighted to learn that BitTorrent and Comcast have reached a resolution to their dispute...As I have said for a long time, it is precisely this kind of private-sector solution that has been the bedrock of Internet governance since its inception."

Meanwhile, FCC commissioner Michael Copps said the Comcast announcement "confirms my belief that the FCC needs to play a proactive role in preserving the Internet as a vibrant place for democratic values, innovation and economic growth... more
