"People are wary of this [capital amnesty law]," said a Tashkent entrepreneur, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to concern about possible government retribution for his comments.

"The government adopts many good laws and offers promises," the entrepreneur continued. "But the implementation of laws is not good. There were many situations [in the past] when the government did not keep its promises. Why should people trust this time?"

Uzbek entrepreneurs complain that despite the existence of legislation intended to promote small business activity, as well as shield citizens from undue intrusions by the government, banks continue to routinely violate the privacy of depositors. According to some Uzbek business owners, banks still report to the Uzbek security services any deposit or transfer exceeding $1,000. more

Future entrepreneurs get creative

That is just one of the several nuggets of wisdom the 37 young entrepreneurs learned this past week while attending the Youth Entrepreneur-ship Camp, said Dawn Bowlus, director of the Jacobson Institute for Youth Entrepreneurship.

"(The activities) are a basic way to see their ideas count, and they can develop their confidence as entrepreneurs," Bowlus said.

This week's day camp was designed for fourth- through sixth-graders from area schools. The students spent all week developing a business plan that included market research and operation costs. Bowlus said the students also are asked to brainstorm business ideas.

"The creative process is simple, but it is still a crucial concept for these students," Bowlus said.

One outlet for the camp's creativity is a project they do in conjunction with Paul Heyn, owner of Heyn's Ice Cream. more

My mom left us to work abroad when i was 6 coz of my dad's abusive behavior & alcoholism. I just learned last September that my mom has a new family in Germany w/ a 7 yr old son. I feel so dejected & alone w/ my alcoholic dad who frequently drinks almost everyday & becomes loud, angry & doesn't care if he turns on the radio so loud & disturbs the neighbors. I feel greatly ashamed, helpless & hopeless w/ my situation. I feel anger, guilt & fear most of the time even though i try hard to pray & be optimistic, be a good person & cling on to God's mercy that someday I will be set free from this situation I’m in for so so long. I feel it’s so unfair that I have to go thru this kind of life. My dad didn't have work & it was my granddad & aunts who supported us financially,our basic necessities (both for my dad & grandma) & my education. I tried to advice my dad but he won't listen. I am so sick & tired & desperately want to live a happy, normal & successful life free from living in worry & fear everytime I go home finding my dad drunk again that I used to intentionally go home from school late at night when he is asleep already & the house is peaceful again .I feel miserable finding no place to stay and it’s scary to be out there in the streets even if I am tired from school and longs to go home and have a good rest or study for an exam. I sometimes prefer to surf the net in an internet café and come home late at night rather than bear the shame hiding in my room crying & enduring my dad’s wastedness. I feel a bit better after graduation since I am working in my aunt’s café for almost a year now as a graveyard shift cashier just so I could escape the painful situation at home since I have a room to sleep in our café where I can run to when I don’t want to sleep at home bec. of my dad.I am earning below minimum wage w/c is enough since my aunt takes care of our utilities. But now I decided to leave my current job to earn bigger & make use of my College degree. But I’m afraid that I have to live in hell again, cold & scared out in the streets like before since my aunt won’t accept me in the café anymore once I decided to work for in another company. I don’t want to live in my aunt’s place coz I don’t want to be a burden to them. They live in a posh subdivision since they are pretty well-off. Do you think I would survive if I decided to find a better job like in a call center, earn a bit much there so I can afford to find a place on my own so I could try as much as possible avoid the difficult situation w/ my dad? But will a sensitive person like me with low self-esteem survive in a call center job? I can’t think of faster and decent way to earn much. My biological father is an alcoholic way back before i was born. My mom couldn't handle his abusive behavior that she left us when i was 6 & went to another country.My grandma took care of me while my grandfather supported us financially. My dad didn't finish high school & was more interested in hanging out with his alcoholic friends.He has been jobless ever since & doesn’t care about working to earn a living since he was dependent on my grandfather. Since i was a child, i live in guilt, shame, anger & fear bec. everytime he comes home drunk, he is a loudmouth, angry & wouldn't care less if the stereo's speakers was blasting so loud late at night in our apartment that neighbors complain about how nuisance we are.I feel so much shame as i hid in my room crying with much hurt & pain waiting for the nightmare to end. I had low self-esteem.I get so angry at him that in my mind i wanted him to die or I would think of killing myselfThings became more difficult for me when my grandmother had a stroke & Alzheimer’s that I could no longer lean on her anymore for comfort.For years, the nightmare brought by my father continued & so is my darkest moments of despair as I try to focus on my studies while hiding in my room bearing the hurt & shame.Yes there are normal days when he is sober but when he is drunk & rowdy again, it seems that the bright & sunny world I once knew suddenly turn stormy as hell for me.I feel I wanna run away, scream, cry & shout but nobody listens & understands. By God’s grace I was able to finish Business Administration in College.I am 21 now but my dad still has his habit. He tends to quit for a few days or weeks but then he goes back to drinking again esp. when he gets to save money that my well-off aunt gives him allowance daily out of sympathy.My aunt takes care of the utilities since my grandmother, their mother, lives together with us in the apartment. I took the graveyard shift cashier job in an Internet café that my aunt owns as a way of escape & avoid experiencing the trauma to avoid my father’s drunkenness as much as possible. But fate seems to be playing at me bec. my dad sometimes is drunk early in the morning or in the afternoon & it leaves me so bitter & angry again towards him, others around me & myself. I get so angry again that I swear & cursed my own father. As a Christian, this really saddens me & is so hard for me to try to live a life without anger & hate when life itself forces me to do so. I feel so alone & dejected. I never have a boyfriend maybe bec. I don’t seem to trust men or have not found yet found someone who would be serious & accept my family’s situation. I still pray that one day my dad would finally finally quit drinking & be a real father to me. In our Asian country, I don’t know yet if we have support groups like Al-Anon. Right now, I am dying to settle a normal life for awhile but I am still anxious at the moment bec. I still can’t find a decent job once I quit the cashier job. And if I get a new daytime job, I dreaded the thought if I have to live again the nightmare when my dad gets hooked to drinking again in the evenings. I am so sick & tired of living this way.In our culture is really different bec. children are still responsible for their parents even when they are beyond 18 years of age. But now I plan to rent a place of my own so I could have a peaceful place to run to when I come home and find him drunk again. I think I couldn’t bear any longer like before. I had enough of the trauma since I was a kid. Am I being selfish if I will start to live on my own and try hard to escape from home when he gets drunk? But my grandmother is still living in our apartment and I don’t want to leave her when I know she has short time left with us. But I am really affected by my dad’s alcoholism. I tried to advise him but the advise just feel on deaf ears. I must admit we don’t talk so much at all and I am not open to him bec. it’s hard to establish a close relationship with him bec. he tends to easily misinterpret and get angry at things bec. a dominant person he is. I am anxious also since I will be the one to take care of my father’s allowance bec. my aunt made a deal that she will quit giving help to my dad if I quit working at the café.That would mean it will be hard to save or there won’t enough left for me to save and being financially stable on my own feels completely out of reach for me. My father and I decided to start a internet cafe. So, we will buy a more or less 150 square meter house and lot and we will start with 15 unit PCs. We will also add a billiard table and also a coffee shop that serves finger foods, sandwiches, juice and maybe some beer(or no beer)..... inside the 150 square meter house and lot. The house and lot is located inside a subdivision in which there are no internet cafes nearby. The nearest internet cafe from the sbdivision is far and has few and old PC units. We will buy all LCDs and maybe 3 Dual Core PCs, Intel Pentium 4 processor PCs, AMD processor PCs with video cards that reach 128mb and up. It will offer typing jobs, photo editing, scanning, Video Editing, etc... So, is this a good plan? Do you think it will be successful? If successful, we plan to again invest in another business here in the Philippines. My dad said that it is an advantage compared to reniting in the mall because all profits are ours and we don't pay for rent.The place isn't as modern as the US. Libraries don't offer free internet here. Oh, and, there are no internet cafes in sight within a big radius from the site where our internet cafe will be built. more
