Easter bunny to open Easter Fest

NORWAY - Recreation Director Deb Partridge announced Friday that two more businesses have signed up to participate in Saturday's Norway Easter Fest, which is being held downtown from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Don's Redemption and Cafe Nomad, both downtown businesses, have signed on to the fourth annual Easter festival.

Hundreds of children and adults are expected to turn out for the event, which begins at Norway Memorial Library. There, people can pick up the Bunny Trail Map and get more details about the day's events.

Partridge said the Easter bunny will open the festival at the library before hopping across the street to Main Street Furniture & Appliances where he will hand out balloons. There will also be a Main Street Easter egg hunt, craft tables, a chance to enter raffles, a performance by Mary Ukelady, and healthy snacks provided by Healthy Oxford Hills. more

Fire razes two businesses in Brisbane's south

Queensland Fire and Rescue says it took three hours to control a blaze that gutted two businesses, and badly damaged another, in Brisbane's south.

Senior operations coordinator Kevin Devitt says crews were called to two fires - one at a dry cleaning business and one in an adjoining antique shop, at about 2:00am AEST.

He says the blaze quickly spread to a tile warehouse nearby.

Mr Devitt says 42 fire officers have been fighting to control the fire, which proved difficult in the early stages. "Being a dry cleaners that gives us a concern that the building had chemicals on board but we were able to ascertain early that they weren't involved in this part of the building," he said.

"The hard part for firefighters was that it was on two different streets and two different businesses."

Police closed Old Cleveland Road between St Leonards and Wellington Street. more

Small Businesses Get a Helping Hand

Some of your tax dollars may go to help out small businesses in Eastern Idaho.

The Idaho Small Business Development Center consults selected businesses to start up or grow. If you haven't ever heard of this branch of the government, then you've probably heard of one of the companies they've helped. LawnTech would be probably be under new ownership now if it weren't for valuable perspective gained from the staff of the Idaho Small Business Development Center.

"It was a pretty good eye-opener for us. Areas that we thought we were strong, we weren't so strong, and areas that we wouldn't consider ourselves strong, we were probably better," explains Kim Johnson, who started LawnTech with his brother almost 26 years ago.

Three years ago, with years of success in the lawn care business, Johnson thought his company was ripe and ready to sell off.

"Here, a few years back, our thoughts were, 'we're tired, and we might want to sell our business.' We thought that would have been a good time to consider a sale and that would have been a big mistake, I think. We've grown so much since then."

The consultants with the Idaho Small Business Development center guided Kim's lawn care company to grow by 50 percent in only three years. more

Alternative channels

Insurance companies are now looking at alternative channels such as brokerages and retail chains to bridge the gap.

Although bancassurance accounts for just 2 per cent of LIC's new business premium, it is bracing up for the challenge. It has hired 800 people for referral tie-ups with several brokerages and regional rural banks.

"We are also in talks with several retail chains for selling insurance," said a senior LIC official.

For Aviva India, bancassurance was the capital-friendly way of making inroads into the Indian market in a short span of time. In 2002, as much as 70 per cent of the company's business came from bancassurance. This has now dropped to 50 per cent. Aviva, which has a tie-up with Canara Bank, recently infused Rs 250 crore capital primarily to strengthen the agency channel. more

Business Internet Service Questions asked

Open Question: What happens if customers download illegally on our Wi-Fi?

The British government has proposed a bill that will allow internet connections to be slowed, or even temporarily cut, if illegal downloads have been performed using that connection. Our family business is about to start providing free Wi-Fi as a service to customers, but our home uses the same connection - if customers illegally download music, movies etc on our connection, will it be possible to prove that it was not us and/or take measures to stop customers from doing so? more

Resolved Question: Suspicious e-mail about tax over payments refund?

Here's the contents of the e-mail I received: Dear Applicant: Following an upgrade of our computer systems and review of our records we have investigated your payments and latest tax returns over the past years, our calculations show you have made over payments of 326.75$ Due to the high volume of refunds you must complete the online application, the telephone help line is unable to assist with this application. And the form is called Refund Payment Form. 3: there are other icons I can click on them too, like contact IRS, About IRS, Individuals, Business, and so on, but the page stays the same, still not leaving the refund form page. 4: it asks for SSN, Mother maiden name, credit card #, ATM PIN #, Bank account #, Issuing Bank. Voting Question: Starting a small business?

Hello. I'm just looking for advice and wisdom. I want to start a Gaming lounge/Internet cafe/Coffee shop/Bar/Computer repair shop all in one. ha-ha Its mostly just a dream at the moment.Im a 23 year old college student majoring in Computer Networking.I don't really have any knowledge of how to even start taking steps to start a business. It would sort of be this kind of approach www.thevglounge.com The best location for this business i figured would be a college town. The dream is for it mainly to be a gaming lounge; friends could come hang out and have LAN matches and such and the shop would have tournaments with prizes as well as an internet cafe and computer service/repair shop.Additionally it would be nice to maybe throw something else like a coffee shop during the day, bar at night kind of deal. I know i'd have to go in with a partner who knew quite a bit about business management. anyway like i said I have no clue how to even begin to get this into motion, im just looking for some wisdom possibly from experience. Thanks in advance. more

Open Question: How to open a business in Columbia, SC? I am completely serious.?

I heard that the area i am at does not have a roller rink, this means in-line skaters don't have a place to skate. Does anyone in Yahoo answers that lives in the Columbia, SC area think that there is a market for a roller skate rink that would include a small concession stand with eating area, arcade with pool tables, various console games, WiFi for laptops, Some computer consoles to play World of War-craft and other online games for a small hourly or daily fee. Additionally maybe I can include an area for BMX stunt bikers, and skate boarders as well that would be separate from the in-line skaters/roller skaters area. I was thinking of sole proprietor, or perhaps going as an LLC. because I doubt I would get enough business to expand into needing a switch to being Incorporated. I would probably pursue being Incorporated unless I was or am going to open at least 4 locations to do this stuff. I want to start with 1 location and if support is there expand as demand dictates. I would be looking to start this venture in Mid-to-late-April 2010 so about the middle of next month when tax season is finishing up. On the Internet computer consoles I would also have printing/faxing services available for a predetermined fee.I know I am in for a "hard" sell but if the locals want it they will support my business enough to make sure stuff will happen. more

Resolved Question: Is "allowing tax cuts to expire" the same as "raising taxes"?

Most of the tax cuts put on businesses and individuals during the Bush years are set to expire for 2011 unless congress extends them. Short summary: The 10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33% and 35% tax brackets that we’ve grown accustomed to will be replaced by 15%, 28%, 31%, 36%, and 39.6% brackets. This means a family making more than $70,040 in 2011 will see their top tax rate go up by at least 3%. Child tax credit drops from $1,000 to $500 The maximum amount of equipment placed in service that businesses can expense drops to $25,000, down from $135,000 in 2010 In 2011, the maximum long-term capital gains tax rate goes back up to 20% from 15%. 529 Plans can no longer be tapped tax-free to pay for a computer or Internet access. The Hope credit is again limited to the first two years of college and is capped at $1,800. None of the credit is refundable if it is more than your regular income tax liability and best of all, For individuals dying after 2010, the federal estate tax returns with a $1,000,000 exemption and a 50 percent maximum rate. If you're worth more than $1,000,000 and old, your potential heirs now have a motive to hope you die before Jan. 1, 2011. Nice, huh? Is it keeping a campaign promise if every household over $70,040 gets a tax increase, but it was because tax cuts expire? Some sources: http://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/tax-tips/irs-tax-return/5519.html#2011 http://www.fivecentnickel.com/2010/02/15/2011-federal-income-tax-brackets-irs-income-tax-rates/Oh, for anyone who calls me a liar on my facts - please be specific and tell me what I have wrong. All of these are easily searchable. This is current law, not some goofy theory. The Republicans put the expiration dates in there to get it shoved through. It was a mistake, for sure. I guess they figured making them permanent later wouldn't be so hard. more

Resolved Question: Bad times to be sarcastic online.?

The internet is a great place for sarcasm. Being clever and sarcastic can be entertaining and often humorous. However, there are times when sarcasm isn't a very productive tool. For example, when you buy an item off ebay or an online store, it is rather counterproductive to try and be witty to the business offering the service. Here is one example of somebody being sarcastic online at the wrong time, wrong site Somebody ordered one of my shirts and sent me 1200 pennies. Enclosed was a note that said, "You will find $12 in cash, specified as acceptable currency per your shirt page." Not only did it cost him four dollars extra to ship, but it cost me fifteen minutes to count and four hours to go out in the woods and shoot squirrels in frusteration while I thought of what I was going to in response. Naturally, because he did pay for a shirt with "perfectly acceptable currency," I sent him a shirt. However, I sent him a "perfectly acceptable" shirt, as ordered, chopped into 1200 pieces. There's a valuable lesson for you. Perhaps if you hadn't learned the lesson now, you would buy a puppy online in pennies and the pet business might do the same. how many answers can I get to this before it gets taken off for violating guidelines? The clock is ticking more

Resolved Question: Is anyone other than me about fed up with the USPS?

The U.S. Postal Service does not even try to be competitive, they just keep raising rates and service just keeps getting worse. They have their fingers in stationary, stuffed animals, pins, framed items, phone cards.... Like, YES, the next time I need a gift for someone, I'm going to the p.o. Right. NOT. Why don't they try to do really well the one thing they do best: deliver mail.I know mail delivery is mind boggling in concept, especially world-wide. But the USPS complains always and raises rates. Don't any of the management there have a business degree? Are post offices in other countries trying to sell toys and collectibles? The whole idea of a collectible is something that is saved. If something is produced JUST TO BE A COLLECTIBLE...how collectible is that? Duh.They complain they have to raise rates because of internet and email. How come they didn't have to raise rates because of telephone?O, I am po'd with the p.o. more

Resolved Question: can you major in engineering, be an engineer and take on art on the side?

i want a stable career and want to live a comfortable life, help my family financially, maybe own a business some day... engineering seems to be a good choice for that ...i do have some interest in computer engineering or electrical engineering (mostly curiosity about how things work ) so i thought one of those too would be best for me BUT heres the thing ...on top of being just okay in math, i also have an interest in drawing and art ( i draw anything thats in a photograph) my family thinks i have talent and it would be a shame to let that go. id like to get better at it but i dont want to end up a starving artist, i thought about graphic design and advertising but theres just sooooo much competition. now just because i can draw doesnt mean ill do good in graphic design, in fact ive done some research and graphic design has very little to do with actual drawing (it has to do more with the creativity that the artist supposedly has) ...and the way things are going graphic designers are prbly going to end up being the new starving artist from what ive been told (feel free to correct me if im wrong) i dont want to give up my drawing abilities, but i want to earn a good living my plan is to major in comp eng. or elec. eng. then open an internet cafe and take care of all the repairs myself and as well as offer my professional services ... then i planned to take a course in web design to make some extra money on the side and once my business is stable enough to hire someone to manage it for me id try to work from home and take up drawing, painting, art as a hobby .....what do you think about it? does this seem realistic? will i still be able to enjoy drawing and art? i dont mind the hard work i have to put into majoring in engineering ...all good things in life require hard work and dedication... i just dont want to waste the skill i have for drawing ....so yeah please let me know what you think about my situation, any advice that you can offer, any corrections you may want to point out, any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated ...thankyou for your time more

So I don't know a lot about specs for computers. I just love playing on computers. Right now all I have is a cheap netbook that I can't do a lot on. I want a good gaming computer. One that will let me play online with others with games like Halo and also play my Sims games. I don't want it to lag up on me. I tried playing Halo on my netbook and it was working fine until I got to a battle scene. Then there was no way to play. So I went to iBuyPower.com and custom configured a computer. Resolved Question: is this in my own words? the othter 1 screwed up?

Is this in my own words? you know how you can't plagerize and all that... i tried putting this in my own words, is it good enough? internet: Step 1: Identification of a Vacancy The Line Manager identifies a vacancy for reasons that may include: • Staffing changes – eg. secondment, resignation, termination, retirement, leave; and/or • Work requirement changes – eg. creation of a new position, temporary additional workload. Step 2: Review the need for the position/to fill the vacancy. The Line Manager will review the short/long term requirement for the position and the need to fill the vacancy. In so doing the Line Manager will consider: • Staffing Plan/profile for the work area • Budget • Current / Future Requirements • Job Skill Requirements • Occupancy required to meet need (eg. ongoing, fixed term) • Adequacy and accuracy of position description • Whether the position is approved and established Note: This review may involve other managers within the faculty/service centre. Step 3: Determine the most effective recruitment strategy to acquire a pool of candidates The Line Manager will consider and assess the best way of attracting a pool of suitably qualified candidates, who will meet the needs of the business. Examples of methods for acquiring a pool of candidates are: • Internal staff (Advertisement) • Internal staff (Redeployment) • Candidates from recent/previous recruitment activity • Professional/Industry Organisations • Recruitment Agencies/Job Network • Advertising • Internet • Journals • Newspaper Step 8: Commence selection by reviewing applications and determine a shortlist of candidates. The Chairperson of the selection panel will ensure that all members or a representative sub-group have access to the applications, consider the information and facilitate a shortlisting process to identify the most competitive candidates. The selection panel (or representative sub-group) will compile a summary assessment and ranking of the candidates against the selection criteria for inclusion in the selection report. It may be necessary at this step to consider pre-selection interviews or other assessments tools to identify a manageable shortlist. Candidates not shortlisted will be advised that they were unsuccessful. Step 9: Assess short listed candidates. The selection panel will conduct interviews and/or apply other relevant assessment methods to acquire information relevant to the university’s business needs, position role & accountabilities and selection criteria. The assessment methods should be consistently applied to all candidates for a vacancy and may include, but not be limited to: • Interview • Skills/aptitude test • Work samples/simulations • Psychological testing • Reference check (mandatory for the recommended applicant) Following the collation of information from the various sources, including the candidate’s application/resume, the selection panel will review all the information and determine a ranking of the candidates. The ranking will identify the candidates who meet the criteria and order of merit. Step 12: Verbal offer of employment to preferred candidate and discuss employment terms and conditions. The relevant Line Executive/Chairperson/Line Manager makes contact with the recommended candidate and informs them of the offer subject to relevant conditions. The contact may address: • Remuneration package details • Relocation budget/costs • Availability for commencement • Clarify terms and conditions of appointment including tenure, probation etc. This should be undertaken immediately on receiving approval of the recommendation. Step 13: Make written offer of employment to candidate. HR will arrange for the formal written offer and contract of employment to be prepared (in accordance with the selection report) and dispatched within 1 day of receipt of the approved Selection Report and recommendation. Step 15: Arrange appointment and commence induction process. HR will ensure that all appointment documentation is stored on the Vacancy File and the appointment is finalised. This will include: • Obtaining a signed contract of employment • Update of all information/records (eg. ALESCO System) • Ensure induction is planned and conducted • Storage and retention of all original recruitment and selection documentation for 12 months in accordance with relevant records management guidelines.mine: Managers identify vacancy for reasons that can include: dismissal, leave, resignation, terminations, retirement or work requirement changes. Review the need for the position to fill the vacancy Managers will look at the short term and long term requirements for the position. Things they need to consider include: staffing plan/profile for the work area, budget, current /future requirements, job skill requirements, adequacy and accuracy of the position description and whether the position is approved and established. Determine the most effective recruitment strategy to acquire a pool of candidates The manager would find best way to attract candidates who would be suitable for the business. Some of these methods include advertising, the internet, newspapers, and journals, recent candidates from previous recruitment activities, job networks and recruitment agencies.Commence selection by reviewing applications and determine a shortlist of candidates The chairperson of the selection panel would then make a shortlist of candidates by reviewing the applications. To do this the chairperson has to make sure all members or a representative sub-group has a chance to read all the applications. Then they will make a decision by identifying and selecting who is most suitable for the job. The selection panel will put together a summary assessment and rank each of the candidates against the selection criteria for inclusion in the selection report. Here it is necessary to look at pre-selection interviews or other documents to decide on a manageable shortlist. Candidates who were not put on the shortlist would be told they weren’t successful. Assess short listed candidates Here the selection panel will assess each of the candidates they chose to put on the shortlist. They will conduct interviews or use other methods to acquire the most suitable person forthe job. They need to consider the business’ needs, position role and accountabilities and selection criteria. The methods used for selecting a member of staff should be the same for every person. The methods can include interviews, skills/aptitude tests, work samples/simulations, psychological testing and reference checks. After acquiring all the information needed, the selection panel would review the information they have gathered and rank all the candidatesFollowing the collation of information from the various sources, including the candidate’s application/resume, the selection panel will review all the information and determine a ranking of the candidates. The ranking will identify the candidates who meet the criteria and order of merit. Verbal offer of employment to preferred candidate and discuss employment terms and conditions. The executive/chairperson or manager will contact the candidate and inform them of the offer, work conditions and expectations. Information can include: remuneration package details, relocation budget/costs, availability for commencement, clarify terms and conditions of appointment including tenure and probation. Managers are expected to clarify these terms immediately on receiving approval of the recommendation.Make written offer of employment to candidate. The manager will write a formal offer and provide the contract of employment. The letter of approval and contract would be sent within one day of receipt of the approved Selection Report and recommendation. Arrange appointment and commence induction process. The manager has to make sure the appointment is finalized and all the documentation is stored on the Vacancy File. This will include: finding a signed contract of employment, update of all information/records, ensuring induction is planned and conducted and storage and retention of all original recruitment and selection documentation for twelve months is in accordance with relevant records management guidelines.i did it for you check your e-mail more

Voting Question: When is the U.S. Postal Service just gonna give up?

Their business has drastically reduced because the internet, UPS, FedEx, and DHL have them beat, and now they're considering cutting Saturday delivery. A few years ago they wanted to tax online orders, even ones delivered by those private delivery companies, so they could get more revenue. They should just adopt UPS's model to provide fast delivery. The problem is that it's government run. I hope they've abandoned that "neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow" stuff, because they didn't deliver mail in my area for two days last week. more

Resolved Question: driverchecker.com employee ! Your customer who paid 39.99 needs help and no help available?

I paid 39.99 for help to fix a blue screen issue on my computer last week and like magic an answer to solve my problem came through when a person said use this software at driverchecker.com for a price of 39.99 and that should help you. Well I surely thought it could help but I never realized it would hurt me in the end. Your product did nothing to fix any problem instead it created more of a problem and the worst problem is that on your website it big bold letters shows the help section will respond to the paying customers within 24 hours. I sent 7 emails within 5 days and no answers. How funny that the yahoo answer to my blue screen question . that driverchecker.com was answered less than 5 minutes after i submitted my ? to the forum . .and now that I need help trying to get support at driverchecker.com all I get is Nothing for the small fee of 39.99. Is this company really in business? My next question is where to report this problem of services advertising in this forum that are obviously not helping or assisting the public on computer problems and have taken my 39.99 and have no way of allowing their paying customers to contact them. How can I find out if this is an internet scam that seems to be a hoax because the product once it's paid for has a menu that does nothing but scan my computer So BLUESCREEN PROBLEMS SHOULD NOT PAY DRIVERCHECKER.COM 39.99 FOR SOMETHING THAT DELIVERS NOTHING AND WILL NOT RESPOND FOR HELP ON THIS PRODUCT. Resolved Question: Company to print full color header cards for retail locations?

I am searching for a company that can print header cards that are used to hang products on peg board in a store. Something full color, 3x5", glossy, peg hole, and possibly on a roll so that I could load it onto a printer in the office to add the product details such as sku and barcode. I would think this would be all over the internet for companies offering this service but I can't find a darn thing, only 1 or 2 places. What printer would you suggest to print the details in house on them? I am a small business with about 200 products but trying to make this as effecient as possible. Any suggestions would be great, possibly even a small business forum where people discuss these things. more

Resolved Question: Where/How can I find market research information for starting a business?

I'm starting a small business in Portland, Oregon and I need to find out some market research information about my proposed location. I've had very little luck on the internet and I have found limited resources. Some things I need to know are the economic condition of my area, which includes dollars of retail and service sales, percentage of change from previous years, percentage of unemployment, and (this being the most challenging one) number of business starts and failures. This is only a piece of the information I need, does anyone know where I can find this information? By phone or internet? I need this information by tomorrow so I don't have much time and I can't actually visit any research businesses. more

Resolved Question: What's the hurry spanky?

I was just replying to you and was surprised you closed the Q that soon with you thinking you got nasty responses , and I assure you , you misunderstood what H is telling you , H did not mean to insult you. However please read my answer (or now question) below , and answer it if you have further inquiries on this subject. Other members input is always welcome. --- I bet you none of these are actually sent by real Dubai based companies or businesses , most of these are fake from people in other countries impersonating Dubai or UAE entities , to cash-in on the boom in dubai and the coverage it has been getting worldwide, they abuse that and all these e-mail lists and spam servers are not actually based in UAE . A lot of these come from Nigerian, Russia, east Europe, US, India, & Malaysia. The UAE can't reach these people because they are not operating from with in the UAE. Of course there may be some actual or real businesses sending promos, but for the real ones you can simply contact them and ask to be removed from any promo list or just add their e-mail your spam filter. Some times your own ISP/ webmail sends you ads for other companies they deal with , these are not really spam, they are just part of the way the operate. Unless you are on Hotmail they do send a lot of spam on that , try Yahoo or Google or whatever there are thousands of free mail websites not all of them are after spam money. As for operating a "scammer" business in UAE, that is very hard to do and the law is very strict if caught. The UAE has a specific internet law to prosecute any one that does that. But of course nothing is 100% proof , they may find a way but I don't know of any (internet scam from within UAE) , and haven't heard of such cases in a long time. We have several e-mail boxes with a UAE provider , and 1 of them always gets spam as you describe and it is quite annoying to the point we stopped using it, while the other e-mails on the same provider do not have the spam problem. These people who spam you must have gotten your e-mail from an online list some where or from a real company that you dealt with (like if you bought some thing or subscribed to a magazine etc). Where in this company sold the e-mail list of its customers to other parties for profit. Note that for the legitimate spam (not scams or viruses) opening them is not that risky because you need to open those to read how to "unsubscribe" or find out the contact e-mail that you can send a complaint to to make them stop sending you the ads. If you are not sure if has a malicious script in the e-mail then you can stomp that from being activated by turning off the script & java from running in your browser options settings. (this will also turn it off in Outlook e-mail reader -- meaning "options" in IE or Control Panel , it is the same) Just because a spam e-mail has pictures of Dubai does not mean it was sent from there , a lot of travel agents around the world work on commission and pay people to promote their deals TO DUBAI, from their own XYZ country, on the internet , it is not really any one from Dubai doing that. To check from which country & ISP the e-mail is coming from first you need to change your webmail or mail reader program to display full headers (usually not displayed , they are like the caller ID info), after which find out the domains + IPs shown on the headers text and do a WHOIS search on them, this will show the actual ISP and what country it operates from. Once you have done that go to the ISP page (which will be given along wit contact in the WHOIS info), and try to find out from their website how to lodge a span complaint . Send the complaint report to the ISP along with the offending IP of theirs (one of their customers) and a copy of the actual "headers" as proof it came from their service. Also provide exact time it was received because dynamic IPs are shared and they can only find out by the time this occurred. They will start an investigation until thy match which of their users did it and they will suspend their account. Some ISPs depending on the country may actually report the user to police or file a law suit against the spammer if they are a respectable company. Finally UAE domains are limited , and there are only 2 ISPs, namely Etisalat and Du. If your spam shows other ISP names then it did not come from UAE.H, yes I too did not see any other replies so that is why I assumed he misunderstood . But after this Q he replied privately and explained it was because of the name calling , so I don't know exactly may be there were some thing we missed. more

Resolved Question: My number is on a sexual role play business card for some reason? help?

So, I've been getting weird/creepy random voice mails for the past year. It didn't happen often though. Just every once in a while and I've usually laughed it off, assumed that it was a wrong number or a prank caller, etc. Some examples of what they have said: "hey i'm in the (random town near where i live) area, and i'm looking for someone to play with. Give me a call back" & "is this good girls bad girls, i'm interested in your services, call me back" & various others all with the same general impression. All of them from what sounded like middle aged men with scruffy southern accents. Today, I got a phone call while I was in one of my classes and I let it go to my voice-mail. He called twice and left two voice-mails both leaving his number and asking for a price. I don't have any ads out on the internet nor am i selling anything at all. He called and I told him that he must have the wrong number and he explained to me that his friend had given him a business card with my number on it for role-playing. He seemed embarrassed. Is there any way that I can figure out what company is distributing these cards? I texted the guy who called me and asked what else was on the card but he wouldn't reply. His area code was from a town that's about 4 hours from mine.I have tried google-ing my number. and i've tried to locate some sort of a "bad girls, good girls." i feel like i've googled everything haha. i have noooo idea how this happened. I feel like they just misprinted the number on their cards, so the real number would be on their website so if i googled my number, it wouldn't show up for the company. more

Resolved Question: Why do corporations fail to go down when the internet goes down?

I have heard that many companies rely on the internet to be able to function, because they have loads of e-mails which can be hundreds a day. Without the internet and e-mail services, the business just could not function, and there are millions of businesses like this. If that is the case, then how do major corporations and massive companies manage to get around the problems caused by when there is serious internet connection problems? Or do the companies just go bust? CREED more

Voting Question: *PLEASE HELP* would you trust this website to sell a fine piece of estate jewelry through?

Our family owens a jewelry business here in the US. There is a man who contacted me from Spain, and he wants to buy a piece of estate jewelry using this website, which is an escrow service. I am highly leary, because of the fact that it is a transaction through the internet, as would any one be. I have researched the company as much as possible, but I cant seem to feel comfortable with it yet. I had the option to check out the buyer through the site, and he seems to check out ok. If you could just please check out the site for me, and tell me your thoughts, I would be VERY VERY VERY appreciative. thanks, Lindsay more

Resolved Question: Trying to figure out my "dream job" - Does this sort of job exist?

Hi all. I know I'm grasping at straws expecting the Yahoo Answers community to point me in the direction of my dream job, but other than a couple of points I really have nothing to lose by asking, so here I go: I am a college grad with a Bachelor's degree and six years of bookkeeping/administrative/customer service experience, as well as supervisory experience. I mostly stumbled into that line of work haphazardly while I was just trying to make some spare change during my school years. I was hoping to switch to a more personally fulfilling career this year, but now rather than figuring things out at my leisure, I've been given a strong push to quickly figure out what I want to do since the facility where I worked has shut down and now I am out of work. I have a decent severence package so I still have some time to ponder the situation, but this whole unemployed thing is getting me antsy. Anyway, these are the qualities I have to offer and/or am looking for in a new job: *While of course it would be nice, I am not really looking nor expecting to make six figures a year. I am more concerned with quality of life and having free time rather than making tons of money. I am willing to forgo luxuries like cable TV as long as I am otherwise financially secure. At any rate, I live in a two income household so I will not be the only one paying the bills. *I have entrepreneurial inclinations, or certainly a need to work more or less independently (minimal supervision) with an ability to exercise my own judgment. Almost every single member of my family, including my parents, has done the small business thing, so I know what's involved. Right now I don't really have the money necessary to jumpstart any ideas I've come up with, so this aspiration may be more of a long-term requirement than an immediate expecation. *I want to do work that is meaningful and fulfilling. While the day-to-day tasks of work ALWAYS become boring over time, I want to at least be able to look at the big picture and feel like I am fulfilling a positive purpose within the world. In particular, my concerns lie with matters of animal welfare, habitat preservation, and the like. I also have interest in spiritually empowering other people, but I shy away from traditional religion and new age type stuff, so that doesn't leave me much career option of that kind. *I want to travel. Even if this travel is not explicitly built into my work, I should be able to get away for a vacation twice a year, and at least one of those vacations a couple of weeks long. *My strengths include strong writing and proofreading skills, typing, computer literacy, and using the internet for research. I am also detail-oriented, organized, and consider myself to be a planner and a problem-solver. *I consider myself to be somewhat creative and would enjoy composing written works, but I would not feel comfortable composing written pieces freelance as my primary source of income. I would consider this to be a good side project. I also don't really have a professional portfolio that would land me a full-time gig doing that sort of thing. *I am introverted and would NOT be happy in a sales or marketing career. IF I was pitching about something I really cared about and thought was worthwhile, I could probably do it, but I am definitely not interested in hawking some hot new product, whether tangible or intangible. So is there any semi-secure career option that would play both to my interests and my strengths? Preferably without requiring more schooling? I know it's a longshot, but I'm interested to see what (serious) ideas others come up with that I might not have considered.Under the bullet-point mentioning travel, I would also like to mention that I have an interest in other cultures, both in the present and in history. For example, I had considered teaching English abroad as an option that fulfilled all of my strengths/interests, but didn't like the idea of leaving the country for a full year or more. more

Voting Question: Do you think this is right?

Puppy Mills: Holocaust For the 21st Century Atrocious... Abhorrent... Inhumane... Sickening... These are only a few of the adjectives that come to my mind when I think about the growing number of commercial mass puppy breeding operations that are thriving throughout the USA and Canada at this very minute. A dog and puppy "holocaust" is taking place, with "canine concentration camps" in every state and province. Most of us have heard about puppy mills, but (and I am guilty of this, too) we avert our eyes and minds from them - because the truth is just too horrible to think about. Well I received my "wake up call" yesterday when a "responsible breeder" attempted to post advertising on "Responsible Breeders Showcase", my web site dedicated to responsible dog ownership and responsible dog breeding. In checking out this breeder, as I do with every breeder that wants to showcase their dogs and puppies on my service, a search deep into the bowels of Google revealed a shocking document which told me just what this breeder was all about. She had been charged with numerous counts of animal cruelty and neglect, all related to her keeping breeding dogs in a barn without adequate care. Many of the dogs had to be euthanized due to injury and illness as a result of this neglect. There was even mention of findings of dead dog carcasses left amongst the living dogs. Despite these charges, the breeder was still in business. In searching Google for information about this breeder, I was shocked to discover just how many "breeder directories" had allowed her to advertise - no questions asked. I was disgusted and alarmed. Sadly, the Internet has become an advertising Mecca for puppy mills, back yard breeders, puppy brokers, and others who profit from misery. The number of commercial dog breeding operations in the USA and Canada has more than doubled in the past 10 years, and their numbers are still on the rise. With high-profile celebrities like Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie and Britney Spears waltzing into pet stores and buying puppies like fashion accessories, it's no wonder that there is such a market for these cruel profiteers to exploit. The public sees only adorable little teacup puppies being toted around in designer dog carriers - what they don't see is the haunted look in the eyes of the parents of that cute little puppy - the dogs who live and breathe solely for the purpose of producing more and more "cute little puppies", confined in cages and runs, often without adequate food, shelter, room, clean water or veterinary care - and ALWAYS without the one thing that dogs thrive on - human companionship. The term, "Puppy Mill" has been used to label many types of dog breeders, and there are many who disagree on what the definition of a "Puppy Mill" really is. Certain radical animal activists would have dog breeding in general against the law (which would likely see the extinction of most of our most beloved purebred dog breeds within about 10 years) For me, a "puppy mill" is a "dog factory", where dogs are seen as "equipment" and puppies as "the product". Like any business, the goal is to make the most money possible while keeping costs to a minimum. Dogs are kept like livestock, in small pens or cages, and bred at every opportunity until they are too old or ill to be of further use to the "factory". Once this occurs, these dogs are "disposed of" - either killed or sold to laboratories to be subjected to further mistreatment. Not all commercial breeding operations are this bad - and most are not this good. I'm not going to fill this article with graphic photos of neglected dogs standing behind chicken wire - or cooped up in small, filthy pens barely big enough for them to turn around in, much less get the daily exercise a dog needs to remain healthy. I'm not going to detail the stories of gross neglect and abuse that so many breeding dogs and puppies endure at the hands of their owners. What I AM going to do is hopefully incite a call to action, outlining what we, as dog owners and dog lovers can do to help make puppy mills go away forever. Like the man who coined the term "Man's Best Friend", I have always seen dogs as loving, joyful, innocent, forgiving, intelligent animals. I've heard that dogs have the intellectual capacity of a 4 year old human child. I love dogs, and I really have to wonder how these charming and wonderful creatures can be treated with such disdain by lawmakers. How can it be legal to "farm" dogs like cattle, regulated only by the USDA (US Department of Agriculture), who ensure only that each dog's "basic requirements for life" are met? How can it be acceptable in our advanced society for 1 person to own in excess of 250 dogs, and do with them as they please? How can the "Companion Animal Act" omit the one thing "companion" animals require the most - companionship!? It's a stunning display our society's apathy, lack of education, lack of information and lack of meaningful sanc more

Resolved Question: What governing body above Verizon DSL can I complain to?

Is there any governing body I can write to in order to file an official complaint with Verizon DSL. I ask because it seems that Verizon DSL has terrible internet and customer service. It took one month before they could actually give me functional internet. I have my business and my first month of internet service consisted of dropped internet connection while in online web meetings with potential clients. The internet was shutting down many times per day stopping me from working because I depend heavily on the internet. Please let me know if there is anyone beyond Verizon I can send my following complaint below to. If you have any other advice, please feel free to let me know.Thanks. My complaint (you don't have to read it all but it's horrible): I recently moved in January from Costa Mesa, CA to West Covina, CA. I had to change my DSL provider from AT&T to Verizon. I was told by an automated voicemail message that my DSL would be activated on Tuesday January 12, 2010. So I was looking forward to have internet as I have my own business (Drakenology Inc.) that does web page development work and heavily depends on using the internet to send customers email and to talk to my customers over the web cam in meetings. So on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, I hooked up my DSL. And I have done this plenty of times as I was an AT&T DSL customer for 4 and half years. So the internet did not work even though Verizon said my DSL was not activated. So I just decided to wait until the next day. So I waited until the next day Wednesday, January 13, 2010 until 2pm. I restarted my modem and my computer and made sure the modem was on and it was directly connected to the phone line. It still did not work. So I called tech support. They did everything in their power to fix it as I was on the phone getting direction from them for more than three hours. After three hours they decided to actually bring a tech service man to come to my house to fix my DSL internet. They scheduled the appointment for the tech service man to come to my house on Monday, January 18, 2010. First of all I was unhappy that my internet did not work as I had to do work for my home business. And secondly I was unhappy that I had to wait 6 days for someone to come fix my DSL internet. I was losing 6 days of productivity in my business. This was ridiculous. So after six days of no internet the tech service man finally shows up on Monday morning around 9am on January 18, 2010. He turned on my computer and saw that the internet was not working. He then told me the action tek modem I had was not compatible with Verizon DSL. I told him I used the same modem for AT&T DSL and it worked fine. I then later told him the modem was a year old and I bought this modem myself and it was not an approved AT&T modem. He just kept on telling me I needed a new modem. He recommended two modems to me which was the westtell and another type of action tek. So I went to best buy and bought the action tek. After a couple hours of troubleshooting it did not work. And then I was getting even more upset since this Verizon DSL Tech told me to buy this modem. He told me it would work and it did not. So I was wasting my time and my money on a non functional modem he had told me to get. So I went out on my own and bought another modem. I bought a modem that the tech service man did not recommend. So I set up my internet and the generic modem (model name zoom ADSL X6) started to work properly and now my internet was working. I then called Verizon to voice my unhappiness and told them that I did not want to get billed for internet starting on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 because I did not have functional DSL internet until Tuesday, January 19, 2010. This was one week late! This cost me time and money for my business. So the supervisor was nice and said a few things to me: She said that the tech service man did not follow standard procedure in diagnosing my problem. The tech service man should have brought a modem with him to check the internet problem. Then she gave me a 25 dollar credit to my account. But I was really angered when she told me that your own Verizon tech person did not follow standard Verizon procedure and bring a modem with him to check my internet properly. He just looked at my modem and told me to buy an approved modem which ended up not working. He could have saved me time and money if he brought his approved modem to really check out my internet the right way. I had to go out of my way and get a modem he approved that didn’t even work. So I started using my DSL internet with the generic modem of my choice (model name zoom ADSL X6) and it worked, but I came to realize that the internet speed was so very slow. I went online to run a speed test. I remember that my previous service provider of AT&T was many times faster. So after a couple weeks I finally decided to call Verizon. It took me so long time because I was wishing that the problem would resolve itse more

Voting Question: What is the cheapest way to backup 50 TB of data?

I work for a company that might go out of business. We have about 100TB of data (mostly HD Video) on a RAID. The RAID system is on lease and if we go out of business the drives are gone / data is gone. If we are very picky about the data we should be able to get rid of about half of it (down to 50TB). However that is still A LOT of data. Obviously, since we're in danger of going out of business we don't have much budget to work with. Short version: What is the cheapest possible way to backup this much data? Also we have a huge internet connection (for the time being) so sending it to a service through the web IS an option. thanks for any help. more

Resolved Question: Discuss how the case would turn out?

Assume that there are numerous Internet service providers in a large city. Because of fierce competition, these businesses advertise heavily. One of the features that some of them provide and advertise is streamlined access to pornography sites as well as proprietary pornography sites that can be accessed only by those who subscribe with that particular service provider. This city passes an ordinance that prohibits any advertising about being able to access pornography over the Internet. One of the service providers challenges the constitutionality of this statute. Discuss how the case would turn out. more

Resolved Question: Do people really think that fast broadband is a right, but health care is a commodity?

I was on an Internet message board the other day day and it was pretty scary. The topic of conversation was net neutrality and home broadband, and the general attitude was that broadband was an essential human right, and that Obama practically needed to write it into the constitution that no broadband connection should ever fall bellow 10mb, and that throttling P2P traffic should be outlawed. Yet the same people seemed to think that the Fed should keep their hand off of the health care system and let the market/big business deal with it. Is this really what things are like these days? People want the state to regulate luxury goods like broadband and to mandate that they be universally available and have a minimum quality of service, but that important things like health care should be left with minimal regulations? FYI, this isn't a soapbox to rant about Obama care. more

Resolved Question: Is WorldComm Systems internet provider opportunity a scam?

I saw an ad in the small business opportunities magazine and a company called WorldComm Systems located in Macomb Twp.,MI is offering a business to become a internet cable provider with your own website and support. Basically, you get over 3,000 cable channels through your internet instead of the usual cable box. The cost is only $109.00 to get started. I want to make sure I am getting into a reputable company before I start offering this service to others. The cost is worth it just so we can have it for ourselves but if I can offer it to others and make money doing so...so be it. Help! Tell me what you may have heard or read about this company. more

Resolved Question: Tax experts, I need you! I'm self-employed. Principal business? Business activity code? Accounting method?

A question on Tax Act asks for Principal Business. It says, "Describe the general business activity and the type of product or service for this business." I was a freelance writer for Demand Studios which means I was self employed. What would I put here? "Internet Freelance Writing?" Also, would the Business Activity Code be the one that says "Independent writers, artists, etc.?" Last but not least, it asks me to identify the accounting method used to record the results for the business. It says, "If you have inventories, you must use the accrual method to record sales and purchases unless you are a qualifying taxpayer or qualifying small business taxpayer. You also must keep account books in order to use the accrual method." I didn't have any inventories. I calculated my payments using the Demand Studios website and a calculator. I didn't keep books. I mean, I only wrote articles for a website. I am so confused. I filed with Tax Act last year but I don't know if it's just me but this year seems more confusing. more

Resolved Question: Interface Talent Networking recruiting me for Customer Service?

So I was called for an interview today. No, I'm not model material, but this was for a customer service job. They said my background fit the job perfectly. I found this a bit odd, because I have had customer service experience, but most of my background comes from sales. That's fine, to be honest, I'd rather help customers with problems rather than try to force people to buy stuff they don't want. So anyway, I always do research on companies prior to meeting with them. My research has led me to an abundance of negative reviews from customers claiming it's a scam, and it has horrific ratings with the BBB. I've also learned that they do work with legit modeling agencies, although they are not one themselves. These agencies apparently have nothing but good things to say about them. So on to my question(s): A) Is this place really a scam, or are parents just not aware that you need to pay for a photo shoot in order to get your foot in the business (this seems to be a big debate on the internet)? I have morals and have turned down plenty of scam jobs before, but I have a son to feed and can't be as picky these days. Likewise, having a 2 year old son reminds me that I wouldn't want someone scamming me in this manner (not that I would ever pay out $650-1000 for pictures) no matter how beautiful my son is. B) Is it a good place to work for? Do they scam employees as well? Am I being led to believe that I'm working customer service, when in fact they will want me to go into malls and convince parents to come in and pay outrageous amounts of money for photo shoots? This is a difficult decision for me, and I will meet with them next week and form an opinion of my own, but I like to be prepared and not have the wool pulled over my eyes. Any and all comments and links would be appreciated, from both employees and customers. more

Resolved Question: Should there be an age limit for those in public service?

I was reading an article on John MaCain and noticed that he is 73 years of age. I personally like McCain, but the notion that someone of his age should dictate how I live my life is a little absurd. I wouldn't take advice from my parents on how I should run my business, home, etc, Yet somehow we should listen to someone nearly old enough to be my great grandfather? In the next 50 years i'm sure scientist/doctors will find a way to prolong our life at least another 50 years. Think about it for a second. If there is no age limit a politician can be elected to senate/house at age 35 and theoretically stay in power for 85 years or so. 85 years is how long it took our nation to go from declaring its independence from England to fighting the Civil War and ending slavery. That happened because those who were originally in power had died out along with their children and their children's children. If politicians do get to the point were they live to 125 years or so things will change a lot slower. Hell If our founding fathers were living 125 years slavery would probably not have ended till the mid to late 1900's. So the question remains should we put an age limit on politician, or am I the only one who worry s that those who cant even use the internet are dictating public policy for all of us? more

Resolved Question: e-commerce business-to-consumer and business-to-business commerce conducted by way of the Internet?

e-commerce business-to-consumer and business-to-business commerce conducted by way of the Internet or other electronic networks. E-commerce originated in a standard for the exchange of documents during the 1948 – 49 Berlin blockade and airlift. Various industries elaborated upon the system until the first general standard was published in 1975. The electronic data interchange (EDI) standard is unambiguous, independent of any particular machine, and flexible enough to handle most simple electronic transactions. In addition to standard forms for business-to-business transactions, e-commerce encompasses much wider activity — for example, the deployment of secure private networks (intranets) for sharing information within a company, as well as selective extensions of a company's intranet to collaborating business networks (extranets). A new form of cooperation known as a virtual company, actually a network of firms, each performing some of the processes needed to manufacture a product or deliver a service, has flourished. http://www.e-commerce.com.sg/ more
