Agreements Completed for The Westin Norfolk Hotel and Conference

"Most conferences are sold 2-3 years in advance so we're on schedule for a spring 2011 opening," said Kimberly Schlick, Vice President of Marketing for LTD Management. A Westin marketing sales office on Main Street is planned to open in early fall. LTD Management and the Norfolk Convention and Visitors Bureau will cooperatively represent The Westin Hotel to meeting planners. "This will provide meeting planners and potential clients a place to come for a sensory experience that is unlike any other. Every effort will be made to inspire the public on what this project will become," said Kimberly Schlick.

Mayor Fraim said that he's confident the new Westin Hotel and Conference Center will allow the city to become more competitive in its efforts to attract the lucrative executive conference business. more

Caution, this is a rant: I'm 22 years old in my last semester of college. I just want to be done already. I'm studying Business and International Relations which don't really have an interest in..and i don't really have a direction in my life. I know I don't want to do the typical 9-5 job..I want more out of life. I signed a lease with a friend last month. Last week, her boyfriend basically moved in for an unknown period of time. He quit his job, but does have some upcoming interviews. So he definitely is trying to get another job. Her bf ate some of my stuff..but then went out to the grocery store and got me replacement food. He does attempt to clean up after himself even though his stuff is in the common area and bathroom. He's basically a third roomate. I didn't sign up for living with him. I have to constantly hear them bicker and I basically stay in my room. He doesn't really know how long he'll stay..but I think he should contribute something to the rent for March. I'm fed up with the snow, my living situation and school. more

to raise my gpa to a 3.0!!! but it's really hard, no matter how HARD i try and study, i do great on homeworks, but i'm just a bad test taker and i study alot! i'm actually smart but my current accumulative gpa is like a 2.4 D;. Everday I wake up feeling hopeless and desperate. I failed my first year of university in Englang and got back on the horse, and now have a 3.0 GPA in International Business and Economics. I graduated from college in May 2009 with a bachelor's degree in business marketing with a minor in international relations. While in college I was in a sorority and had the opportunity to work in the admissions office. I was involved in a lot of student activities, studied abroad, and did a few internships. I haven't had any luck landing jobs in my field. I moved back in with my parents and have been working in retail until something comes up. I was recently accepted into graduate school for a master's degree in college student affairs, but I also interviewed for a full-time entry level job at a global advertising firm. I am very unsure of what direction to take, and just wanted to get some input about each direction. I definately enjoyed the college experience, and I think it would be neat to work at a college, but it is all I've known. I like learning, and the college environment. Part of me thinks that I might just be attracted to it because it's all I've known. However advertising/marketing is what I went to school for, but since I haven't worked in it, I'm not sure direction I can take with it. There's a lot that I want to do in my life, but I'm not sure what my end goal is. I feel like I'll figure out what my "dream" is as I go, but I need to start somewhere. I'm also unsure if it would be unwise to turn down a full-time to pursue grad school. I know I'd like to get a master's degree someday for sure and work on the international level but just not sure what direction. Suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Why do I only get this problem with African Americans?

I'm Mexican, I own a laundromat here at the border. I studied college in the USA, I know laundromats are very common in the USA. As cheap as laundromats in the USA are, college students are sometimes too cheap to go to laundromat, so they often do their laundry at friend's house. Even so, laundromats are common in the USA, and they are very cheap compared to laundromats in Mexico. Laundromats are a luxury in Mexico, so they are more expensive. All of my machines are American, and they work with quarters. The machines work with 3 quarters, BUT the price of a machine it's clearly stated on the walls in HUGE BOLD letters; a machine costs 20 PESOS (1.53 US Dollars.) My laundromat is very close to the International Bridge, so a lot of American people come my laundromat. Whenever White people come, they look at the prices, they pay me, and I insert my quarters into the machines. It's a simple business transaction. Whenever Black people come here, they go straight to the machines, and insert their own quarters. I tell them they have to pay me 20 PESOS per machines, and I'm the one who inserts the quarters. Then they always start yelling telling me they are American, and that's the way it's done in the America. So I have to tell them they are not in the States, and that they need to pay what's stated on the walls. They always either: 1.- Pay me, and won't stop cursing the entire time. 2.- Get angry, start cursing, and storm out. 3.- Get angry, refuse to pay me, and force me to disconnect the machines, give them their quarters back, and ask them to leave. I've had this business for over 2 years. I've never EVER had this problem with White people. But it has become expected whenever a Black person comes by. Why does this happen? more

Well, I suppose some helpful background information would be that I am currently a college freshman majoring in Psychology. This is my second semester in school, and already I feel that psychology is more of an interest than something I'd enjoy having a lifelong career in. Which brings me to my point: I've lately become interested in being either a Management Consultant or an Entertainment Agent. Both deal with travel, which is a major bonus for me, and largely in communication. And, as they both deal with the marketing side of business, it would make sense to major in Marketing. I will be transferring to Texas Tech in a year and enroll in their business college to pursue this degree. Before I hear back from the advisor I emailed, I would like to know if double minoring in International Relations and Communication would be beneficial to these career choices or just simply a waste of time. Thank you! P.S. Would psychology be helpful as a minor, too? Just curious. It is still an interest, after all, but I think I'll survive without it if it's just ridiculous. more

I'm 17 and currently being dragged under by the monstrosity called "College". ..and I am completely overwhelmed. Not by the applications themselves: I have already applied to all of them and been admitted to two of them. I'm pretty proud of that; some people end up rejected. But my parents keep bugging me: planning visits, pushing me to do really well grade wise (even though I already try hard!), telling me that I will have to work every summer in college, in general BREATHING DOWN MY NECK!!! And all of this has formed a picture: working hard at college, day in and day out, no more play or fun, grad school, then finding a job, to slave away at for the rest of my life. And all I can think is that running away is starting to look very appealing. I have to admit that I am naturally lazy, but its not the work load that is causing me unease. The problem is what i want to do/study. I want to major in History(preferably Asian/European), English(one of the few things I GET), Veterinary Medicine, International Business, Chinese/Japanese or German, and Agriculture. And as I've been told, I'm an idiot. I would have too 1) be a millionaire, 2) stay in college for the rest of my life, and 3) I still wouldn't be able to do all those things at once. So they're telling me to pick 2 at most. But I don't want to limit my life to those things. I actually just want to spend my life traveling: taking oxen carts and boats to travel among countries, with nothing but a backpack and a friend. Then again I also want to learn every language in the world (atleast semi-fluently), which is an impossible dream. So... I'm confused. And in need of advice. Maybe on which majors have a steady, enjoyable job after college or maybe if anyone knows of a USA gap year exchange program. Or maybe if there is anyone out there that would want to run away with me...but only as a last resort :P. I've read enough to know that runing away will never end happy or even happen (most get caught and shipped back to wear they belong). So just give me a piece of ur mind (no crappy comments like "...are you dumb!!" or "go get a reality check"), i'm asking for real, helpful, semi-serious answers. I graduated in the spring of 2009 with a bachelor's degree in public relations and minor in international relations. While attending college I was able to work in the admissions office, which is also a form of public relations. However my coursework concentrated on pr/business. I would definately like to get a master's degree quickly, especially since I have the drive at this age to do it. I have been interviewing for quite a few jobs both in higher education and with an international pr agency. Working in admissions, I could get a master's for free from the college I work at, and at the agency, they would pay for you the master's degree.
