Overseas business boosts General Cable’s 2Q

General Cable Corp. improved its earnings per share by 20 percent, and beat the Wall Street view for its second quarter, helped by acquisitions and an influx of foreign customers.

The Northern Kentucky company posted second-quarter net income of $75.6 million, or $1.37 per share, compared with $62.8 million, or $1.15 per share, in the year-ago quarter. Net sales rose to $1.74 billion from $1.17 billion. Analysts, on average, had expected earnings per share of $1.31 and revenues of $1.73 billion.

General Cable said in a news release that sales growth was primarily due to the acquisition of Phelps Dodge International in fourth-quarter 2007, along with favorable foreign exchange rates. Those were partially offset by declining demand and weak economic trends in the United States and Spain. more

Lloyds gets plaudits for sound business model

Lloyds TSB has received plaudits for its cautious business model, as it avoided the large writedowns on US subprime mortgage assets suffered by rivals.

Unlike competitors such as Royal Bank of Scotland and HBOS, Britain's fourth-biggest bank has not been forced to go cap in hand to shareholders for fresh capital. Instead, its strong balance sheet has let it build market share at the expense of more frivolous peers.

Intel’s Sean Maloney talks about the “fog” of online marketing

I was recently over at Intel as part of the Intel Insiders group of leading bloggers pulled together to offer marketing advice to the world's largest chip maker. Sean Maloney, the number 2 exec at Intel and Chief Marketing Officer spoke about the "fog" of marketing online.

He spoke about stopping nearly all spending on TV and the complicated nature of online marketing. He says that Intel used to be able to use TV campaigns across markets, now, with online marketing, everything is very regional and fragmented. And there a 100 or more countries to deal with. How do you reach the right people?
