Business Showcase is a feature that highlights three types of local businesses in a Q&A format. They are New In Business for businesses less than a year old; Company Spotlight for companies older than a year; and Franchise Focus for franchise owners.

Q. What prompted you to start your business?

We were huge fans of the Great Harvest store in Chico. We decided to open our own store because we loved the bread. We also thought it was a great way to reach out to the community.

Q. What are your educational and career backgrounds?

We both come from legal backgrounds. Fawna holds a degree in administration of justice and pre-law, while Gus is set to retire as an officer with the California Highway Patrol early next year.

Q. How much research did you do before starting your business?

We were huge customers of Great Harvest long before we even thought of owning our own store. more

Informa shares rise 13% after £2bn approach from private equity group

Shares in Informa jumped 13 per cent to 427.5p yesterday after the business-to-business publishing and conference group confirmed it had received a £2.15bn approach from a private equity consortium.

Providence Equity Partners, Carlyle Group and Hellman & Friedman initiated discussions on 26 June and talks are continuing with regard to the 506p-per-share proposal, although there is no certainty that a formal offer will be made.

The consortium approached shortly before the collapse of discussions about a proposed all-share merger between Informa and United Business Media (UBM), a rival, which would have created a global group worth £3.1bn. Although UBM is the smaller of the two companies, it was capitalising on investors' wariness over acquisition debts that was pushing down the share price. more

Oil surpasses $147 a barrel South Florida Business Journal

Whether real or not, Iran's missile testing last week spurred enough controversy to push the price of crude oil higher, industry analysts say.

The missile testing, along with the U.S. Department of Energy reporting a slight decrease in fuel inventory, on July 11 pushed the price of crude oil to more than $147 a barrel from $145.08 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"In addition to the concern about Iran's apparent saber rattling toward Israel, Nigeria's oil output is expected to decline further," said Gregg Laskoski, AAA Auto Club South managing director, in a news release. "The dollar also weakened, and all of that contributed to crude oil's price climb."

The national average price of regular unleaded gasoline is $4.06 a gallon, compared with $2.95 a gallon at this time last year, according to the AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report. more

CBRE-Dallas names managing director of institutional business

The commercial real estate services firm CB Richard Ellis said Wednesday it had hired Blair Oden to serve as managing director of institutional business at its Dallas office.

In his new role, Oden will manage a team of brokers that work directly with clients in the areas of office and industrial brokerage services, as well asset management.

Oden also will help North Texas Senior Managing Director Mark Fewin coordinate and integrate CBRE’s (NYSE: CBG) capital markets and institutional groups in the Dallas office.

"Blair is going to be a great addition to our team here in Dallas for both our clients and employees," Fewin said. "We look forward to getting him acclimated with our core values and then building upon our strengths as we move forward with new business initiatives."

Blair previously was with Duke Realty, where he oversaw office leasing and development and played a key role in spearheading build-to-suit office developments for major clients such as T-Mobile in Frisco and Galderma Laboratories in Fort Worth. more
