If you've ever squirmed through a concert of what a composer I know calls "crunch-and-thump music," you'll likely feel a twinge of sympathy when you read "Admit It, You're as Bored as I Am," the slash-and-burn attack on contemporary classical music that Joe Queenan published last week in the Guardian (http://music.guardian.co.uk/classical/ story /0,,2289751,00.html). Mr. Queenan, a music-loving humorist known for his disinclination to suffer fools, has finally decided to admit, both to himself and to the public at large, that he doesn't like modern music -- any kind of modern music, so far as I can gather from his piece, which is a bit on the unspecific side. Still, it isn't hard to catch Mr. Queenan's drift from his description of "The Minotaur," a new opera by Harrison Birtwistle, which he calls "harsh and ugly and monotonous and generically apocalyptic. more

Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac doing local business as usual

"As far as I know, it's business as usual. They're buying 80 percent of loans in South Carolina," said Kirk Amerson, president of the South Carolina Mortgage Brokers Association.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac reportedly own or back more than half of the nation's $12 trillion in mortgages. The two institutions are private companies, but were founded by the federal government with a mission of freeing up capital for mortgage lenders, thereby allowing more Americans to buy homes.

To fulfill that mission, they operate in the secondary mortgage market. Front-line lenders offer mortgages to homebuyers, then Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac buy the lenders' mortgages. Those mortgages are repackaged as investments for sale.

To minimize risk, the criteria the two institutions use for buying kept subprime mortgages out of their holdings and shielded them from the direct effects of owning bad loans. more

Jack Johnson's big green business

"The music business is traditionally pretty cutthroat, nasty and evil, but [with Brushfire], it is not that way," he tells CNN. "You can make the music you want to make."

Still, even in these major-label-dominated times, artist-friendly labels aren't unusual; Dave Matthews has also attracted talent with his ATO Records. It's in making Brushfire a model of green business that Johnson and his colleagues have stood out.

As keen environmentalists, Johnson and his team have required Brushfire and its distributors to engage in earth-friendly implementations that have influenced others in the record business.

Voting Question: AIR FORCE ROTC AND BUSiNESS OPPORTUNITIES?

I'm a junior in high school and i'm thinking about joining the AF-RTOC program at either BU, NYU, syracuse, UNC, or UCONN. I want to double major in Finance/Business management and engineering. I think the engineering background will help me when looking for employment after my service with the air force as an officer. Only thing is will I be able to get my master's degree and is it of equal quality if I were to go this route. I understand that most of these companies are looking for the ivy league business grads but would graduating with a business degree plus the air force background along with the other experiences it comes with give me a good shot at executive positions or other financial positions in a company. I'd love to run my own real estate investment business one day. My father is a contracter and one day i'd love to tag team with him to fix/build homes and sell and rent for profit. My biggest worry is i'll go to school, get my degree, maybe even get my masters degree, do my time in the air force maybe move up a rank or two, leave the air force to get a civilian job and end up working in a factory, or driving trucks, or some mediocrity job. Not that there's something wrong with that it's just I have the knowledge to do very well maybe even ivy league material but the Air force really interest me but I don't want it to hinder my chances in the real world of employment later on. I don't want a 9-5 $60k a year job. Its just not me. more

Voting Question: Previous employer lies about termination, says I quit.?

Summer 2008 I worked for Lifetouch Prestige Portraits through a temp agency called StaffMark. November 4th, 2008, I was called into the office and was told that my supervisor didn't think my shirt was appropriate. I was wearing a green tank top with a green cap sleeve blouse over it and was covered by a blanket as it was a call center that tends to be ridiculously cold. The three StaffMark employees that were in the office all claimed that my attire was nice and very professional, but since a complaint had been made, I had to go home and change. I advised the women that if I had to leave, I would probably be unable to return until the next business day. I had never missed any work before and was told I would get points marked on my employment sheet, but it was fine if I couldn't return until the next day. I got a call from the office at closing time, about 5 p.m., saying that, due to my refusal to return to work, I was being terminated and I could pick up my things the next business day, if possible. I returned to the building the next day to pick up my things and asked why I was fired. They told me they had decided to terminate me for my refusal to return to work (even though it was the only day I had missed and you can miss up to four or five days before getting so many marks that you are eligible for termination). I explained to them that I did not have regular access to a vehicle and it took me three hours to just GET HOME that day and I pointed out that I had told them I would return the next business day on time as usual if I was unable to return that day. They then tried to point out other reasons for firing me, all of which were absolutely untrue, then turned around and apologized for firing me for no reason and offered me a position through their temp agency at another company right there and then. I was employed two weeks later, through my own efforts, full-time through a company as I no longer trust temp agencies. I didn't like the company I was working for, so I continued to look for work elsewhere. I was contacted by a company I applied for and was told that they had contacted StaffMark, who was the company they were hiring through, and was told I was not eligible to work through them because I walked out on the previous position I had through them. This is obviously a lie and I told them what had happened and they agreed that it was wrong for them to lie like that, but since that's who they were hiring through, I was not eligible to work at the company. November of this year I was terminated from the job I did have. I filed unemployment and was granted it, but when I refiled it automatically selected StaffMark and of course, they contested it, but their explanation wasn't that I hadn't worked for them for over a year, it was that I had voluntarily left my job. I just got off the phone with them and asked them to change this false information and the woman I spoke with was very rude and said that what they have in the system, false or not, cannot be changed and it is what they have on file and will give as reason my employment ended, yet also said they only give dates worked, not reasons employment stopped. This is obviously false and I spoke with the woman for quite a while and she eventually said she would no longer speak with me on this matter. When I told her I could bring up legal action against her, she started yelling and screaming, telling me that was impossible. This is obviously fraud, slander, and defamation of character, correct? Would it be possible to have them legally change their false information or pay me reparations for job opportunities missed because of their lies? more

Resolved Question: Can working arrangements constitute a change in contract even if not formally recognised?

I am a permanent employee - part of my contract of employment relates to location of work - "Your normal place of work is ...(office based), but in accordance with business needs you may be required from time to time to work at other locations in the UK”. 18 months ago I moved from my 'day job' onto a large project with the same employer. During this time i moved house - 300 miles away and at the time was going to resign from my job. However, my then manager asked me to consider continuing to work on the project from home, coming into the office as and when I could. I agreed to this and travelled into the office approx every 2-3 weeks, working from home the rest of the time. This arrangement has been in place for 16 months. My formal contract was not changed - I don't know if it is relevant, but I didn't receive travelling expenses or compensation for the time spent travelling (5 hours each way) during this time. The project has now finished and I have been told I can continue to work up until the end of March 2010 at which point I'm expected to quietly resign. I've been told there are no job opportunities that can accommodate my current working arrangements i.e. home based (this was from my new line manager who is actually home based). Can anyone advise on what rights I may have in this situation? more

Resolved Question: Should business owners have the right to say "English only" to their employees?

Why can a business owner not say English only to his employees.? If they want to cry about it being unfair, should they just not hire anyone who would speak another language? Why are these groups dictating what Americans are allowed to do in their business's? Your opinion? XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX English-only at Conn. bookstore sparks controversy Play Video By JOHN CHRISTOFFERSEN Fri Jan 22, 2:51 pm ET NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A popular bookstore and cafe near Yale University wants its many Hispanic employees to speak only English around customers, sparking controversy in immigrant-friendly New Haven, where students fight for immigrant rights. Atticus Bookstore and Cafe recently issued a policy stating that English should be the only language spoken on the floor and behind the counter. "Spanish is allowed in the prep area, the dishwasher area and the lower level. Let's make our customers feel welcome and comfortable," the policy states, according to New Haven Workers Association, a group of activists who said employees gave them a copy. "I'm really appalled," said Tim Stewart-Winter, a Yale lecturer. "As a New Haven resident and member of the Yale community, I think diversity is a strength of this country." Stewart-Winter said he likes to take out-of-town guests to Atticus, but may not now because of the policy. Bridget Pierpont, a 40-year-old New Haven resident, said she was texting a friend as she passed Atticus on Thursday suggesting they no longer go to the bookstore because of the language policy. "Frankly, I think that's part of the charm of this place," Pierpont said. "I think they should absolutely be able to speak Spanish here." Atticus owner Charles Negaro issued a statement saying his business appreciates and accepts all languages and offers free English language classes to employees. "We encourage the use of English because it's an appropriate way to be most helpful to our customers," Negaro said. "To continue to provide the best service possible, we try to help those employees who speak English as a second language by helping them improve their use of English." Negaro said news reports about the policy have been inaccurate and "if these news reports have offended anyone, I am sorry." "Atticus managers and staff are reviewing our policy of appropriate language usage to determine how we can avoid misinterpretations of this kind in the future," the statement said. Negaro declined to comment beyond the statement. Most of those interviewed outside the bookstore disagreed with the policy. But Peter Indorf, who owns a jewelry store nearby, defended Negaro. "He's a solid member of the community," Indorf said. "He's entitled to do what he wants." Deborah Malatesta, a member of the New Haven Workers Association, said the group plans to demonstrate Saturday in front of the bookstore. She said the policy is discriminatory. The move comes in a city that was the first in the nation to offer identification cards to illegal immigrants. Yale Law School has been active fighting for immigrant rights, filing lawsuits over immigration raids conducted by federal authorities. Employers are allowed to enact an English-only policy if it is needed to promote the safe or efficient operation of their business, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Examples include communications with customers, co-workers or supervisors who only speak English, emergency situations in which workers must speak a common language to promote safety and cooperative work assignments in which a common language is needed to promote efficiency. The EEOC has successfully challenged some policies for going too far. A group of nursing homes in California and Texas agreed last year to pay up to $450,000 to employees who said they faced discrimination for speaking Spanish at work. In 2003, the Colorado Central Station casino agreed to pay more than $1.5 million to 36 former housekeepers who say they were ordered not to speak Spanish on the job. Courts have been divided on the issue. A court in New York in 2005 ruled against the EEOC and upheld a policy by a cosmetic store in Rockefeller Center that required employees to speak English when on the sales floor and customers are present, even if they are not communicating with customers. Blanket policies often run into trouble, but more narrowly focused approaches are more likely to be upheld, said Peggy Mastroianni, associate legal counsel at EEOC. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100122/ap_on_re_us/us_bookstore_english_only more

Voting Question: I dont want him to go away :( Help?

Heres a little background info - My boyfriend is 24, I am 22. We have been dating 2 years, and are very much in love. Our only real issues have been that I am always busy with school, work, family etc. But I try my hardest to make time for him, and he still feels like he takes the back seat in my life from time to time. Regardless, our relationship is pretty solid, and we have made it through all of the "time issues." He is graduated, and he has been working for a VERY stable company ever since he graduated high school. I am very proud of him, because he is a VERY hard worker. He makes good money, and his job is one that has opportunity for growth. He has just told me today, that he wants to apply for a police department that is an hour or so away from our town, and that he wants to move over there too. That he never intended on living his whole life where we live now. He has his own place, I still live at home with my parents. I make good money at my job ( I work for my family's business), and I am still in school and saving money. I have been trying to find employment elsewhere, because working with my mom has brought strain on my relationship with my boyfriend (not to mention my relationship with mom) - she has serious attachment issues that I wont even get into right now, but lets just say we're both in therapy for it. I don't know what to tell my boyfriend. I want to be the girlfriend that supports her man and stands by him through whatever, but I have the sickest feeling in my stomach that this idea is a bad one. I don't want to discourage him, and I truly want to be there for him, but I just know in my heart that this is going to put a lot of strain on our relationship. Like I said, I am in school, I work, and my family is always keeping me busy. He has been there with me regardless of how busy I have been, and regardless of how all my things cut into our time together, so I want to do the same for him, but I just can't!! I don't want to seem selfish, but this IS the man I want to be with for the rest of my life. (thats another thing I won't get into right now lol). I dont want to be with me LESS than I already am now. :( HELP!? any input? more

Resolved Question: Can anyone peer review this essay?

This essay is for an Eng 101 class, and is about the book white tiger...please review it if you can, and provide as many suggestions as you can to make it better. Please be as critical as you like, I would like to improve the paper wherever possible. Thanks! The White Tiger is a book about the daring rise of a self proclaimed entrepreneur from an impoverished slave to a successful business owner. Throughout the course of seven evenings Belram Halwai tells the story of his success, illuminating the working class of India along the way. Throughout this journey of self promotion, the antagonist reveals the extreme tactics used to free himself from the self perpetuating servitude common in India. Culminating in the murder of his boss, his master, Mr. Ashok, Belram employs increasingly immoral means to eventually launch himself from his desperate situation into “The Light”. The moral lapses and consequent acts of evil are justified by Belram’s escape from a life of slavery, and by his eventual ascent to morality. These initial amoral faults are no doubt the product of Belram’s “half-baked” education, his prodigious skill in what he deems “original listening”, and the very nature of the rooster coop itself. The village Belram lives in is ruled by four landlords, each christened with the name of the animal they most represent. These landlords charge the people for use of the rivers, the lands, and the roads, “feeding” off of the people until there is nothing left. India’s poor, living in what Belram names “the darkness”, are portrayed with noncommittal views on education. Belram is free to learn until the family requires their services to pay the landlord, at which time he goes to work in a teashop with his brother. At this job Belram continues his education by employing his listening skills to expand his wealth of knowledge. Unlike his peers, Belram refuses to be complacent, and his eventual posting as a driver for one of the animals’ children only serves to further expand his horizons. He sees India changing, and knows that he lacks the means to change along with her, his fate resigned to an early death in an unattended hospital after a lifetime of servitude. Most of India survives in this state of perpetual servitude or the Rooster Coop as Belram refers to it; the working class of India, intentionally undereducated and forced into menial labor at the first opportunity. The working members of a family are expected to send home nearly all that they make, reserving only enough for base survival. Should any of the flock attempt to escape, their family is slaughtered outright. The servants themselves further perpetuate the problem, as Belram discovers when he becomes Mr. Ashok’s driver – encouraging one another to be good slaves and not stray from the norm, chastising those who do not share the same hobbies or reverence for their masters. Belram’s departure from slavery started with his job as a driver, where his half baked ideas and original listening came in contact with a newly emerging India, one of promise and enterprise. When Mr. Ashok and his wife Madam Pinky contemplate framing Belram for a crime he did not commit, he severs ties with the illusion that his employer is like family to him, and begins to seriously plot his escape. He begins to charge his employer extra for mechanical work, starts siphoning gasoline to sell, and even uses the car as a freelance taxi. Every act of dishonesty enrages Belram, the more he steals from Mr. Ashok the more he realizes how his freedom is being stolen from him; by embracing his immorality, he is more able to see it in others as well. By the time Belram declares himself master of his own world, he no longer suffers from the delusion that his employer is like family, and no longer yearns for the steady employment and shiny uniform that was his childhood dream. The murder of Mr. Ashok is the turning point of Belram Halwai’s life, the final severing of his past. It also provides the fiscal funding for his liberation, and at that moment he becomes another person. He goes on to form his own company. One where he doesn’t treat them like slaves or “insult the drivers by calling them family”. He operates with signed contracts, and encourages his young charge (his nephew, with whom he ran away) to engage in a well funded private education. While he still engages in the corruption that plagues Indian bureaucracy, he does so in the most ethical way possible. Belram even insists on doing things “the right way” when one of his drivers hits a pedestrian, offering his apologies and restitution in the way of payment and a job offer. There comes a point in the book where the reader must ask if the ends justify the means of such a brutal act. In the individual case of Belram Halwai it does. Belram simply perpetuates the results driven culture common in much of Indian society. From the survival of the family water buffalo over all other more

Resolved Question: Since California's jobless rate reached a fresh post-World War II high why do we need immigration reform?

California's jobless rate reached a fresh post-World War II high in July, climbing to 11.9%, a sobering reminder that though the nation's deep downturn may be nearing its end, the state's employment woes are far from over. Golden State employers cut their payrolls by 35,800 jobs in July, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department. That's a significant improvement over monthly losses that averaged 76,000 over the first half of the year. Still, July's numbers were worse than some analysts had expected, rising from 11.6% in June and led by declines in trade, construction and manufacturing. Even with the rise in unemployment here, however, a consensus is growing that the worst of the recession may be over. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke on Friday declared the economy to be "leveling out," and the National Assn. of Realtors reported a sharp rise in July home sales. Wall Street responded by pushing the Dow index to its highest point since November. Still, a robust recovery appears unlikely, and some regions of the country are expected to suffer fallout from the bursting of the housing bubble for years to come. That includes California, which is now tied with Oregon for the fourth-highest unemployment rate in the nation, behind Michigan, Rhode Island and Nevada. The U.S. unemployment rate is 9.4%, down from 9.5% in June. California's battered construction and housing industries, long pillars of the state economy, remain troubling sources of weakness. Over the last year, the state has lost 760,200 jobs, nearly 1 in 5 of them in construction. White-collar workers have likewise suffered from the housing crash as thousands of jobs in banking, mortgage processing and real estate sales have vanished. The number of new-home permits issued in July fell 47.4% from a year earlier, according to the Construction Industry Research Board. "We've disproportionately benefited from two sectors, construction and financial services," said Esmael Adibi, an economist at Chapman University. "The demise of these two sectors has hurt us disproportionately." That's had an outsize effect on California's 13.5 million Latinos, who are heavily concentrated in the building trades. In 2007, Latinos made up 47% of the construction workforce in the state, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In July, California's Latino unemployment rate hit 12.7%, dwarfing the white jobless rate of 9.5%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Black unemployment remains the highest in the state at 14.2%. But Latino joblessness has grown much faster. In July 2007 the Latino unemployment rate stood at just 5.9%, compared with 9.2% for blacks and 4.8% for whites. Last month, 805,000 California Latinos were jobless. That's up 127% over the last two years. The number of unemployed whites in the state grew 103% over the same period, while the number of out-of-work African Americans rose 66%. "You really begin to see desperate times for lots of Latino families throughout California," said Vince Vasquez, a senior policy analyst with the National University System Institute for Policy Research. East Los Angeles resident Robert Gonzales said he was struggling to support his three children after his job as an industrial painter disappeared a year ago when his employer moved to Ohio. http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-caljobs22-2009aug22,0,6343107.story more

Resolved Question: is wend williams hated by every celeb?

In an incident on her Hot 97 show in 1995, Williams notoriously aired rumors that Tupac Shakur was raped in prison. Shakur was furious over the rumor, which New Jersey underground rapper Chino XL referenced in a song, "Riot". Shakur later addressed Wendy Williams on the song "Why U Wanna Turn On Me?", which remained unreleased until his death in 1996. In the song, Shakur insults Williams mainly in the last verse and the outro, stating that he prays she "chokes on the next dick down [her] throat" and refers to her as a "fat troll," and threatening a $20,000 Jenny Craig hit on her. Shakur's former boss, Suge Knight, however, has since become a frequent guest on the Williams' WBLS show. In 2003, Williams caused controversy while interviewing Whitney Houston on her alleged drug habits and tumultuous marriage to Bobby Brown. At several points in the interview, Houston berated Wendy with expletives and told Williams "if this were back in the day in Newark I'd meet you outside, but not now, because I'm a lady with class." Williams has been addressed in song lyrics by several artists, among them Will Smith, Lil' Kim, Mariah Carey, and Lil Wayne. In Will Smith's track "Mr. Niceguy", he mentions Williams by rapping: Wendy Williams, you don't know me, I'm not your punching bag, you won't blow me... up. Girl better leave me alone, Before I buy your radio station and send ya home... A portion of Lil' Kim's track, "Shut Up Bitch" on her album The Naked Truth says: Don't come around here with that Wendy Williams shit/get your facts straight or shut up, bitch! Mariah Carey's hit single "Touch My Body", alludes to Williams as the person whom Carey compares to other people invading her personal space: "'Cause they be all up in my business like a Wendy interview." In Lil Wayne's song, "Million Dollar Baby", he says: '[5] Williams has been criticized by rapper Method Man for airing facts about his family's personal life which he would rather remained private. On March 25, 2008, the New York Post reported that Nicole Spence, talent booker for the Williams experience, filed papers with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission suing Williams. Spence, 27, claims that Williams' husband, Kevin Hunter, demanded sex from her on many occasions and created a hostile work environment by threatening and assaulting his wife on company premises. "Mr. Hunter repeatedly sexually propositioned me at work in the most crude and vulgar ways," Spence states. Spence also says that Williams did nothing to stop the alleged abuse, and in fact "offered to take me shopping so I could dress 'like a sexy little bitch,' as Mr. Hunter demanded." Both Williams and Hunter deny the charges.[6][7] and omarosa more

Resolved Question: What do U think Don't assume worst in Taco Bell flap clergy has jumped to the conclusion that Taco Bell is a?

Not so fast. A group of clergy has jumped to the conclusion that Taco Bell is a big, bad company for firing more than two dozen Hispanic employees in Madison and Sun Prairie. The firings followed discrepancies with the workers' Social Security numbers. "It troubles us on a moral level if hard-working people are being treated with such a lack of respect and dignity," states a June 20 letter from 16 local clergy to Greg Creed, president of Taco Bell Corp. The key word here is "if." Some facts are in dispute, and many others are unknown to the public. Moreover, federal rules on immigration and employment can be murky and at times seemingly contradictory. A business can be punished for employing illegal immigrants. A business also can be punished for firing workers -- no matter their legal status in this country -- if proper procedures aren't followed. Another possibility to consider: Taco Bell may have been sorry to see these workers go if they were doing a good job. It was the federal government, after all, that raised questions about the workers in the first place. The Social Security administration notified Taco Bell that the Social Security numbers of some employees didn't match government records. Employers are required to tell workers about the letters and to correct records as needed. So the company says it gave the employees several months to clear up the discrepancies. The clergy who are protesting Taco Bell say the workers insist they were fired on the spot. About 19 of the workers have filed complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunities Commission in Milwaukee. The unfortunate episode highlights Washington's failure to reform immigration policy so that it's workable and easy to follow. What the controversy shouldn't incite -- so far, at least -- is rage against a restaurant chain that may have simply been trying to follow the law. http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/opinion/458802 You see what happens when the FEDS actually do their job and why are Churches now condoning document fraud ? more

Resolved Question: Is this a good sign Turned away by struggling U.S., Mexican immigrants building businesses at home?

Second of two parts LEON, MEXICO— For generations, people of this central Mexican state have trekked to the U.S. and labored on farms and ranches, in factories and construction. But now this traditional exodus is reversing itself in ways that could profoundly impact both Mexico and America: Immigrants returning to their native lands are starting industries and businesses so they can stay home. By many measures and anecdotal evidence, waves of illegal immigrants are leaving the U.S. and returning to countries such as Mexico because of the tough economy and immigration enforcement. To respond to this trend, the Mexican government in recent years has increased funding for projects run by immigrants who have returned. In Guanajuato, a variety of industries have started: a women’s cooperative producing restaurant tablecloths, a tequila distillery and a factory to assemble tote bags for California wineries. Susana Guerra, director of migrant affairs for Guanajuato state, said immigrants who return home usually have some money set aside and want to use it to start a business. “So we are working ... to have projects for them to have an opportunity for them to be a businessman in the community,” she said. One of the ventures in Guanajuato is the Nuevo Lindero Dairy Society,a dairy cooperative founded by former immigrants on the outskirts of Leon that provides employment for 45 families. Many of the farmers are immigrants who have returned from the U.S. or are relatives of immigrants still working there. “Here, almost 50 percent of the population goes to the United States. When they reach 18, they say, ‘See you later,’” explained Jesus Ramirez, a former illegal immigrant who is president of the Nuevo Lindero Dairy Society. “With this source of jobs, we hope our children will stay.” The cooperative produces an average of 4,000 liters of milk daily from a herd of 250 cows. By offering the raw product collectively to wholesalers, they were able to command a higher price. To do that, the cooperative installeda distribution center next to the highway with a 9,000-liter stainless storage tank. Way more @ http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/world/6349206.html more

Resolved Question: is it time to move on ... how to give up on someone you love most in your life?

i met my bf of 3 years. We live apart now with him working and living in paris and i am in asia. We started off having a very good and loving relationship and he was the sweetest guy i ever met. Always understanding and patient and made me feel very loved and protected. But through his talks and interaction with his family I am aware that he has a nasty temper and tend to be very negative in his thinking. We are very different, I am outgoing and enjoy the good things in life while he is careful with his money and prefers to stay infront of the tv during off days. And at times he gets really distant and i cant figure out what is on his mind. He came from a single family and started working young. He spent alot of time alone so i understand his loner behaviour Because i love him and want a life together so i told myself all the differences are not such a big deal and we can still be happy together. Though we live apart, we chatted and talked to each other every day. Because of the time difference, we both always have to stay up to wait for each other. Even if it was very tiring for me, I always try to stay up to wait for him to get home He is always home right after work and in that area i am not worried he is fooling around outsides. He hardly has any friends except for his family so I know his where about all the times. We talked and fought over how to move together many times. Because of his work (chef) and his experience work overseas, he said it would be easier for him to move to asia instead of me moving and language is a major obstacle for me. To find a job for him, i spent long hours researching the net for job sites and employment opportunities, I created his resume, did the postings and follow up. I even called on my friends and boss to help. We tried that way for a long time, almost a year without any successes so during a visit to paris i told him maybe he could come over and then find something here instead of just searching via the internet. He agreed with me and we set a timeframe for that to happen over the next 6 months and we talked about having to register our marriage so he could stay in my country. But while i was trying to do alot to make it happen, he was living day by day not making too much efforts I started to lose heart and we fought more and each time he would make promise and agreed on a plan which he would not act on. So over and over we talked, agreed, fought and still nothing happened. I was losing heart but my love for him is strong and I couldnt imagine a life wihtout him so i held on to it We had a major fight in jan this year because he started giving me rough words and telling me that if i insisted that we should get married, then we would as long as i am happy. His words cut my heart but still i couldnt let go. He has been having alot of trouble at work and not getting along well with his colleagues. I was very worried about him and tried to be more understanding and listen to him But he started getting very withdrawn from me and started to miss our daily chats and even went on a few days without a word. I kept telling myself he was going through work stress and as a gf i should stand by him so even with him being cool and distant from me, I stood by him and would send him messages to give him morale support and to tell him how much i love him. He was worried of losing his job because of bad business but i told him if that happens, I could still work and support 2 of us in the time being until he finds a job here. All this stress and work is talking a toll on my body and i started getting ill and tired. But yet i kept up with it because i dont want to lose our love. One day, he chattedf with me after coming home. And he said he had been thinking for a week and felt I deserve someone better and feel we should break off so i can find someone who can give me what i wanted. He said all his mind is at work and he knows for sure he will not change and we would have more fights in the future. And he said now with the bad economy, finding a job here will be more difficult and he cant afford to lose the job. Even with me telling him i would share the expenses to pay for his flat, he said no way he would take my money and unless he finds something here, he will not move over. I was heartbroken because again he is breaking the decision we made. We chatted for 3 hours when i was trying to tell him i would support him and stand by him no matter what happens, and love is not something you maintain when you are free but cast it asides when work gets busy. And that we have gone through so much to be together. no matter what i said, he just told me he will not change and things will not get better between us because he will not be able to give me what i want. I was so numbed i could even cry a tear because i had cried so much tears in the 3 years we were together. I feel so tired but my heart hurt so much because of my love for him. During the time we have been together, more

I am almost 23, female, no kids, and figure I would finish my MSN CRNA degree by the time I'm about 30 (start 15 month ABSN May 2010-Aug. 2011, 1-2 years ICU exp., 28 month MSN degree). I was fairly shocked with the job market for radiographers when I graduated school (only 1 person out my graduating class of 20 got a full time job!). I have been working per diem for the past two years since I graduated (from my AS) and transferred to get my BS degree full-time. Now that I'm done with my BS degree, I still can't find FT employment (I need health insurance!), and am really disappointed with the hourly wage in my state (new hires only start at $16/hour!) when the cost of living and taxes in my state are very high! I have been taking a few night classes in computers/networking while working per diem, thinking I might be able to get into PACS/RIS administration or other dept. network systems admin. in the hospital (or any business), but still not too sure about the employment reliability in the computer/IT area either... I love working with people, caring for others, but was always a little "nervous" about all the procedures/responsibilities nurses have (although we do our share of fun as rad techs, too). I know I could do if I put my mind to it... I had a fairly easy time in college with good grades (3.85 graduating BS GPA, and I took pre-med science courses like Bio, Chem, Physics, etc). I realize the commitment and challenges of nursing school and the CRNA program and fully respect anyone who goes through it! I like the idea of becoming a CRNA, more autonomy, you pick your place of work and hours, better pay, more specialized, etc. The only thing I am concerned about is how women (and men) out there balance family life and work life. I am in no hurry, by any means, to get married and have a family, but by the time I graduate CNRA school, I may thinking of that. I don't plan on having a huge family or being a stay at home mom for life or anything like that... I just want options and don't want my career to completely rule my life. How do you guys balance your career and other aspects of your life? I want a family first, then my career, not the other way around! Is CRNA the career for me? Or is it a full-time, life changing comittment? I realize one must love their job and always be focused on continuing education and what is best for the patient... but I also want a job that I can leave at the hospital and come home to my family and still have "other interests." No offense to anyone, I don't want to be an MD or work 80 hours a week (I have huge respect for those who can do that). I just want a stable, rewarding career that will allow my family and I to live confortably and happily. I know it may be somewhat stressful of a career (as there is stress in ANY job), but don't want it to affect my entire life (is there a high "burn out" rate like there is in some other nursing specialties?) I would also like the opportunity to maybe work part-time if I have kids... What are you opinions? How do you balance work and home life? Would any of you do anything different (if you could go back)? Is CRNA a good "mothers" career? Is it worth all the time and training you put in? Thank you for your time and opinions... more

Resolved Question: All dummies to the front of the line. What do you think America?

BREAKING NEWS !!! LEGISLATIVE ALERT !!! The Americans With No Abilities Act Washington , DC - (Dateline February 18, 2009) President Barack Obama and the Democrat-controlled Congress are considering sweeping legislation that will provide new benefits for many Americans. The Americans With No Abilities Act (AWNAA) is being hailed as a major legislative goal by advocates of the millions of Americans who lack any real skills, knowledge or ambition. "Roughly 50 percent of Americans do not possess the intelligence, competence and drive necessary to carve out a meaningful role for themselves in society," said California Senator Barbara Boxer - Democrat. "We can no longer stand by and allow People of Inability (POI) to be ridiculed, passed over for promotions, or even worse - fired - for no reason except for their lack of any ability or motivation to do any given job. With this legislation, employers will no longer be able to grant special favors to a small group of workers, simply because they have some idea of what they are doing or a willingness to learn it." In a Capitol Hill press conference, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi - Democrat, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid - Democrat - pointed to the success of the U.S. Postal Service, which has a long-standing policy of providing opportunity without regard to performance. Approximately 74 percent of postal employees lack any job skills, making this agency the single largest U.S. employer of Persons of Inability. Harry Reid pointed also to the public school system as another long-time leader in the field of providing secure employment opportunities to POI. Private-sector industries with good records of non-discrimination against POI include retail sales (72%), the airline industry (68%), and home improvement warehouse stores (65%). At the state government level, highway public works departments, and the Department of Motor Vehicles both have excellent records of hiring Persons of Inability (93%). Under AWNAA, more than 25 million mid-level positions will be created, with important-sounding titles but little real responsibility, thus providing an illusory sense of purpose and performance while building self-esteem and providing more candidates who will eventually be promoted into actual senior management positions with even higher salaries and even fewer actual responsibilities. Mandatory non-performance-based raises and promotions will be given so as to guarantee upward mobility for even the most unremarkable or unproductive employees. The legislation provides substantial tax breaks to corporations that promote a significant number of Persons of Inability into middle-management positions, and gives a tax credit to other businesses that agree to hire one clueless worker for every two talented hires. Utility and cable companies, followed closely by computer customer support departments, are lobbying to have past such hires become eligible for these tax incentives. Finally, the AWNAA contains tough new measures to make it more difficult to discriminate against the non-abled, banning, for example, such blatantly discriminatory interview questions such as, "Do you have any particular skills, knowledge or experience that relate to this job?" "As a Non-abled person, I can't be expected to keep up with people who have something going for them,"said Mary Lou Gertz, who lost her position as a lug-nut twister at the GM plant in Flint, Michigan, due to her chronic inability to remember "rightey tightey, lefty loosey." Gertz added, "I shouldn't have to be a rocket scientist to keep my job and this new law should be real good for people like me." With the passage of this bill, Gertz and millions of other untalented citizens will finally see a light at the end of the tunnel and be able to secure well-paying, tenured jobs just like other people who simply are more motivated and productive but otherwise identical to workers such as Gertz. Said Senator Dick Durbin (Democrat-IL), "As a Senator with no abilities, I believe the same privileges and benefits that elected officials enjoy ought to be extended to every other American with no abilities. It is our duty as lawmakers to provide each and every American citizen, regardless of his or her inadequacy, with some sort of space to take up in this great nation and a good salary for doing so." "You're supposed to sit on your *** and nod at stupid things. Man, that's hard to do." more

Resolved Question: Start a new business now?

I wonder if you fine folk can give me a little advice. I have been claiming benefits for quite a while and they are presently due for revue. I would prefer it if I came of benefits and became self employed using the New Deal programme that is available at the moment. I have a child and would like to be able to combine working and caring for him/her at home. I have attended several business link meetings and have signed up for some free training courses on business management etc. The urge to become financially independant is great, but I am also painfully aware of the economic climate at the moment so I feel as though I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. I really don't know if the government is pushing self employment as a tactic to reduce the figures of those claiming benefits or if it will keep unemployement figures lower, is this a genuine opportunity. Obviously at the end of the day the government doesn't care if my business fails but It would be a terrible thing for me and my family. If it were any other time I would feel 99% confident that I was doing the right thing, but every time I watch the news the viewing is very depressing to say the least. Do I continue claiming benefits or start up my own little business. My family are 'pushing me' in the right direction as it were because it is the most positive move I have made in years. I would appreciate a little impartial advice if you would like to give it. Thanks in advance. more

Voting Question: Do I call her? or wait for her to call me? I miss her so much?

Hello Everyone, Thanks for taking the time to read this as I am completely lost right now and could really use some advice from an outside party other than my friends and family. I know this is a long post but please, if you have the time, read this and offer me your thoughts, I would so appreciate it. My girlfriend (27) and I (30) split a few days ago and I have been completely lost since. We began seeing one another the first week of December 2007. She lived about 45 minutes away and I own a business in my hometown, and the commute began to be too much for me all the time. (she currently has a suspended drivers license)so after 6 months we decided for her and her daughter to move down here with me and my daughter because we could not stand being apart any longer. Soon after we moved in together things began to get a little rocky. I admit I have my faults and I am not perfect, however it seemed that nothing I ever did was good enough. It seemed like there was always something that she had to complain about. i.e. I spend too much time with my folks, my family doesn't accept her (caused by her never wanting to spend time with them and get to know them), it started to seem like she was the only one in the world and I began to see a lot of selfishness. In spite of this, I care about her and once I fall in love with someone, I commit myself to spending the rest of my life with that person and working through our problems the best I can. After 6 months of living together I began to run into financial hardships because she was having a hard time finding employment here in my town and I was paying the majority of the bills. We both began getting stressed. In the mean time she was still nagging me about my daughter being at my moms more than at my house, which my daughter would rather be at grandma and grandpas because they have contributed sooo much in helping me raise her, she is used to their house, and I respect that. She just turned 4 and I want her to be comfortable, and if that means being at grandma's instead of my house, I am ok with that....for the time being. As things got more difficult financially supporting my own family, my busines, and her and her daughter, I began to look at other business endeavours. I went into a partnership within the same industry I was currently in with someone I was previously in business with. This gentleman is extremely successful and I appreciate any advice he ever suggests. He told me I needed to refocus on my business if we were going to be partners and since I was going in the hole financially, it was probably best if she move back to her hometown for a short period of time until we could both get back on our feet. This would give me the opportunity to get some money back in my pocket and in the mean time she could be focusing on working and getting her drivers license back. It was a hard decision to make, but I decided to take his advice and move her back to her parents house, I did the same. We agreed I would come see her once or twice a week and on weekends I didn't have my daughter, just as we did before we had moved in together, and in a few months when we both had our ducks in a row she would move back down here and start school and we would go from there. Everyone that knew the circumstances thought this would be a great idea. Well, after I moved her home in November she seemed to start to disconnect from me emotionally more and more. Our sex life became virtually nonexistant and she just wasn't the same person I fell in love with. She then began her complaining of my family and telling me how I needed to do this and that if we were ever going to make this work. I can also see where she is coming from......to an extent. Then last week she told me she would be working the weekend, so I might as well go out with my friends, something she normally gets upset about. I found that odd. A day or two later I took her grocery shopping and all of a sudden all she was concerned about was healthy food and losing weight. I was supposed to go see her Friday and she said she wasn't feeling well and told me she would see me on Saturday. I was to pick her up from work. Then Saturday she said the roads her way were slick and maybe I should wait until Sunday to come. Saturday night she told me her shift at work had been replaced by someone else and she ended up going out with her friends instead of calling me to come up when she hadn't seen me all week. Then around midnight she texted me and said she wished I could come up, and she wanted to talk. After everything else that had been going on, I knew this wasn't going to be good. I then called her and insisted she tell me what was going on and she then told me she thinks we should just be friends and she wanted me to come up and talk. The next morning I went there and she began to tell me all the things I always here from her about her issues with how me and my family do things, blah blah blah, and how she needed to focuson her daughter and getting her license back, and going back to school and that I needed to get back on track too, and then maybe in 6 months or a year we could try it again. I'm a grown man, but I will admit I just sat there and sobbed. She didn't seem upset at all. She didn't shed a single tear, and told me not to think she wasn't upset, it was just that she had been crying the past two days and she just didn't have it left in her. She even had the audacity to make a phone call that could have waited, while I sat there and sobbed. The next day we agreed to meet the following night for dinner and during the conversation she mentioned giving me her cell phone back and she would get her own. I told her that didn't make sense if she had planned on us remaining friends and spending time with one another, with the possibility of us getting back together. the phone would cost me more to cancel service than it would to pay for a year of usage because its on my business accounThe next night at dinner one of the first things I asked her was if she was sure this is what she wanted and without hesitation she said yes. She told me I was her best friend and that she couldn't imagine me not being in her life and she wanted to be with me, now just wasn't the time for either of us. I then handed her a 4 page letter that I had started on several weeks before all this came about. A very sentimental and loving letter that most women could only dream of receiving from a man. She read the letter and told me it was really sweet and thanked me for it and without hesitation, then told me ''this is not going to change things.'' I dropped her off at home afterwards and we hugged each other for what seemed like forever, both of us crying and her begging me to be her friend, which I insisted I couldn't. We hugged again and gave one another one last kiss and she walked away from my car sobbing.Originally I felt like she only wanted to be my friend because she might have someone of insterest on the back burner, and I am not going to be anyones ''plan B.'' I am too good of a person for that. I also can't stand the thought of her seeing other people and hanging out with me from time to time and killing me more in the long run so I decided to cut all ties. She keeps reassuring me there is no one else and I partially believe that. I think there are signs there is, but I also know there isn't any suspicious activity on any of her online accounts that I have access to, nor is there anything suspicious on the phone bills. So maybe all the reasons for the breakup are valid.I spent time with her brother last night and I am extremely confident he would tell me if there was anything going on, he is a very honest person and has become a good friend to me, and he told me the breakup was a shock to him as well and that he is almost certain there is no one else. I also firmly believe he would tell me if there was, so that I could go on with my life. I might add, the only guy that I know she has been talking to I have never met, but she told me many months ago she has been friends with him forever and she would never even consider fooling around with him. Her brother last night said the same thing when I asked him. He said the guy was like a brother to her for years and its never been anything more.Since I have talked to her brother, I am now wondering if I made a mistake telling her I couldn't be her friend. I haven't heard from her since I left her house and am wondering if she didn't want to be my friend to begin with and only told me that to let me down easily or if she is respecting my wishes and not contacting me because I told her I couldn't handle it. I want to call her, but I also think if she really cared she would have called by now. What should I do? And thank you for taking the time to read this, I know this is an extremely long post but I didn't want to leave many details out. more

Resolved Question: Divorcee Job Hunt Need Help?

Hi there, I am a talented divorcee and I need a job. I can't afford to work for minimum wage and mathematical shortcomings are all that is keeping me from my degree (I have flunked remedial math 4 times and can't take my science courses to obtain my degree without a passing math grade) I have 167 college credits with a 3.45 gpa if you subtract the math courses from my overall GPA. I have owned my own jewelry store, been an assistant manager of a pawn shop, been a private investigator, and am the only NAIS certified adoption search specialist in the entire country. I have worked as a Karaoke DJ in bars and private parties but my karaoke gear is not working presently and I can't afford the repairs being unemployed. I have also written computer game reviews for Amiga world and Computer Gaming World magazines. I served as the president of the Abington Downs homeowners association in Madison, Alabama and was on the Architechural control Comittee. I have no resume because most of my experience is self employment. I really need to find a high paying job or entry level at about $35-40K in order to make my bills. Below is an example of what i have come up with for a resume, I think it stinks, I need help. Please offer suggestions. I can't move I live in San Diego. Leah XX Caminito St. San Diego, Ca. 92XXX 858-XXX-XXXX home 858-XXX-XXXX cell Objective: To land an entry level job at Yahoo! Near or from my home in San Diego, Ca. Summary: This is not your standard resume, and I am not your standard future employee. I would make an excellent choice in a position at Yahoo! because after years of real life experience I know it is all about the bottom line and results, and experience has taught me how to achieve this goal. My college GPA stands at about 3.45 however in addition to having a good education, at the age of 43 I have a lot of real life experience that other younger entry level candidates can’t match. Education is important, but many things can’t be taught in a book. Furthermore, as my former mother-in-law once said of me I am, “Honest to a fault”. Honesty and dependability are very important to me. I know a company like Yahoo! values these traits too. I have had a thriving web based business in the late ‘90’s focusing on the Tiger Electronics interactive toy “Furby” which promoted this toy and generated thousands of dollars in revenue on click through commissions alone. I am high energy and enjoy the spotlight. I have worked as a professional disc jockey and karaoke entertainer for 12 years, I was also a licensed private investigator and taught beading classes and jewelry craft in my own boutique in Madison, Alabama. I have been to fourteen countries both for business and pleasure. I have also been a relief worker in the Honduras. All this while raising a family of four children. These things make me a great choice for any entry level position. Most of my experience stems from self employment or volunteer work. Again, unlike your average candidate, I can’t list dates employed here or there, because being a Mom and a wife came first when I was married. I have not punched a clock since I left the US Navy in 1987. I have been working on my BA sporadically, as money permits, and also working on repairing my credit post divorce induced bankruptcy. Please do not judge me on my credit report; it is not a fair representation of my credit-worthiness. Much of the red is still pending litigation with my former spouse and as much as I wish I could pay all the joint debt we held, I can’t. I would like the opportunity to sit down and discuss a position at Yahoo! in an interview. I am sure that once Yahoo! sees that I am a fast learner, outgoing and LOVE people, Yahoo! will know I am the right choice for a position. I am hoping to earn at least 35 – 40K in my first year, but do not want to place a 40K limit upon myself… I require at least 20K and would need health benefits and retirement. I hope to hear from you soon. Sincerely, Leah XX 858-XXX-XXXX more

Resolved Question: I'm trying to find a way to work from home that is for real and doesn't require I use my credit card

If you know how I can go about working from home please let me know some ideas such as is it possible to apply directly with an employment agency and/or a business and ask them if they have any work from home opportunities? I mean is that even a such thing? not just those silly sites that are full of crap. I want actual legit work. I don't need to make a lot of money, 10 or 12 an hour is just fine. Don't need a hundred an hour. So if you have any info or some ideas for me please write thanks. The reason I want to work from home is because I never do good working around or with people. I have some issues so I feel it would be much better if I could work alone at home, I would be albe to support myself while I deal with my issues with also include panic attacks about being outside. As you can see it's quite difficult with all my issues to get a regular job so that is why I want to work from home. Doesn't matter what it is. I am very good at Data Entry though. more

Resolved Question: Husband laid off in small town, I want to move closer to my family and he does not. Suggestions please...?

My husband and I have been married for 10 years. We have three young children. We started our marriage on the west coast, living near my father. My husband did not like it there and he wanted to move closer to his family. We moved to Missouri (1 ½ hours from the in laws) and lived there for 9 years. This past year he was offered a job in the small town where his parents live. I agreed to leave my job, which I loved, for this career opportunity. I became a stay at home mom. It has been a year and my husband was just laid off. There are no job opportunities here for either of us and he still wants to stay in this little town. He has his bachelors degree in business and 10 years of management experience and would rather stay here and try to get a warehouse job that would barely support us. If I was to work I would only make enough to pay for childcare. I would really like to move to Arizona to be closer to my family. The employment opportunities in Tucson or Phoenix are by far better. I really feel that this is the best time to move. We are both not tied down to a job and our children are still young. He says we should just wait and see what happens with the housing market. He wants to stay next to his family and I feel it is my turn to live next to mine. Is this selfish thinking on my part? I am not sure what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe pros/cons? Thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: How do I know it isn't a scam?

I was offered an employment opportunity via careerbuilder. I've been looking for work at home opportunities for a few weeks to a month now. I know the usual signs of a scam. Upfront costs, fake testimonials, little work for tons of pay, etc. I've made it a habit to check anything I'm interested in with the Better Business Bureau via online. However, this business is based in Ukraine. The job seems legit. They don't ask for any upfront costs. So should I go for it? If you know how to search this in some international business site, it's Global Financial Group 35 DANTA GLOBA ST. KIEV, 25200 UKRAINE General Tel: +(380) 44-235-9911 http://www.global-fin-group.com/If you want to leave links to at home employment, I'm not interested in surveys or mystery shopping. Resolved Question: Horoscopes01?

Virgo An adventurous, "don't tie me down" spirit gives way to a desire (or need) to take care of business in May, dear Virgo. You are in demand professionally. What you have (and haven't) done comes up for inspection this month, so keep everything above reproach. Lay low on the 3rd and 24-26, however, when energies are confusing and you could inadvertently misrepresent yourself. If gossip flies, take the high road and let your behavior speak for itself. This is another first-rate month for love. Romantic matters are moving forward. Libra You are attempting to re-invent yourself this month, dear Libra, and the urge for self-transformation is strong. Wanting more from life is a theme now and through next month. May is a good month in which to borrow or to settle debts, if necessary. Either way, dealing with debt now tends to generate positive outcomes. However, avoid financial transactions, especially with friends, on the 12-14 and 25-26. Intimate matters are strong, but don't try too hard to read between the lines with a partner. Romance thrives on the 17-18. Scorpio Focus this month, dear Scorpio, is mostly on partnering, sharing, and intimacy. Nevertheless, the demands of your work, and perhaps even the public, are large in May. This is a strong month for settling differences on a personal level, and for going after what you want professionally. Communication is key when it comes to dealing with sensitive issues with a partner. Impulsive decision making should be avoided on the 21-23. Confidence works on the job, but haughtiness doesn’t. Love is especially potent on the 1-2, 12-13, and 17-18. Sagittarius Nice opportunities with finances, work, and employment arise this month, dear Sagittarius. Practical matters are strong for you in May. Money matters move forward. Although gains are not necessarily explicit just yet, finances look more hopeful. Intellectual work and studies are favored this month. Towards the end of the month, partnering comes into focus. It's a strong period for any kind of negotiation and smoothing over differences. The best periods for you this month occur on the 11-12 and 18th, when you should keep your eyes open for opportunities. Capricorn The first three weeks of May are mostly dedicated to enjoyment, play, and romance, dear Capricorn. Your charm is easy and natural. Pressures are easing in your life and you are coming out of your shell. The lines of communication are opening. Sexuality is strong, and tensions in a close partnership lessen. Making a point of getting out of the house and taking in plays, movies, and other forms of entertainment will do wonders. Learning new skills help improve your work, which will come into stronger focus towards the end of the month. Aquarius Activities in and around the home figure strongly in the first half of May, dear Aquarius. Less attention to career responsibilities brings you closer to your roots. Romance is hopping in the second half of the month, when play time is more important to you than usual. You’ll have plenty of heated discussions with a partner this month. There will be times when you might find a partner is coming on too strong or pushing his/her own agenda at your expense. In the last week of May, be cautious with your money. Pisces Plenty of visits, errands to run, social activities to attend, correspondence to write and respond to, and other busy activity is featured for the first three weeks of May. This month is a great time to tell someone how you feel, even if they already know it. Family members are friendlier to you now and news you receive is mostly pleasant. Love settles down and becomes more intimate. Avoid making important love decisions on the 25-26. Enthusiasm for work projects returns, and more diversity as well as opportunities occur on the job. more

Resolved Question: Did anyone else see this?

By COREY WILLIAMS, Associated Press Writer Thu Feb 28, 9:37 AM ET DETROIT - The broad-brimmed western hats, colorful festival dance dresses and Mayan-style pottery that line the shelves at Xochi's Mexican Imports are common sights at stores in the Southwest. ADVERTISEMENT But it's southwest Detroit on a cold, dreary winter day, not sunny El Paso, San Diego, Tucson or other cities just north of the Mexican border. From its Mexican Town restaurant district to the new shops of the La Plaza Mercado retail development, southwest Detroit is doing something it hasn't done in years — grow and prosper. "We come starving for a better life," 32-year-old dance instructor Valeria Montes said. "We want to strive and we've found in southwest Detroit a place to do it. The opportunity was here for us and we took it." Latinos are carving out a niche in neighborhoods far from the southern border more and more — from Bagley Street here to the Mitchell Street area in Milwaukee to Bailey's Crossroads in Fairfax County, Va. A new wave of Latino immigrants is following others who established communities in northern cities in the 1950s after getting jobs in the auto and other manufacturing industries. The attraction now is employment in restaurants, shops and other service-oriented businesses that cater primarily to residents in those communities but also draw non-Latinos. "A number of folks who are coming up — documented or undocumented — are finding jobs," said Enrique Figueroa, director of the Roberto Hernandez Center at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The now-vibrant neighborhood wasn't always so. Its fate had mirrored most other areas of Detroit that began to lose businesses and people following the city's 1967 riot. Boarded-up buildings and an unappealing mix of fast-food stops, dank bars and seedy strip clubs lined the streets. Gang violence was rampant and the housing stock crumbled. "It wasn't a neighborhood where you could walk down the street," Southwest Detroit Business Association deputy director Edith J. Castillo said. "Now, you can actually walk down West Vernor. You can take your family out for ice cream after church." Castillo's nonprofit is one of several working with city officials and businesses to resurrect the area. More than $200 million has been invested in southwest Detroit in the past 15 years, which has attracted retail and new homes, including an $11 million condo development. "It's one of the few places in the city where you are seeing a lot of private investment," said Olga Savic, of the Detroit Economic Growth Corp., the city's public/private development arm. "West Vernor Avenue was once primarily vacant. Now, it's 90 percent full." The neighborhood is doing so well the mayor didn't include it in his plan to pump millions of dollars into distressed areas. Blight hasn't been totally wiped out, but older Latinos and the new immigrants are helping with the transformation. "These are people who are risk takers ... and understand if they are going to make it, it's up to them to make it successful," said Ruben Martinez, director of the Julian Samora Research Institute at Michigan State University. "Many others, who have been here for several generations, don't have that." The Detroit neighborhood is known as "Mexican Town," but it truly is a melting pot. About half the residents claim a Hispanic heritage, 25 percent are black, 20 percent are white and 5 percent are Arab-American, according to the Southwest Detroit Business Association. In contrast, more than 80 percent of Detroit's 920,000 residents are black. And while the city's overall population has plummeted in recent decades because of white flight and more recently the exodus of the black middle class, the southwest side's population has grown considerably, up 6.9 percent to more than 96,000 people from 1990 to 2000. The city's Latino population grew by nearly 19,000 over that period to more than 47,000. Without the manufacturing jobs that attracted many to places like Detroit, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Chicago in the 1950s and 1960s, Latinos have found opportunities in their own backyards, Figueroa said. "Once you had a cousin, uncle or aunt there, that was a logical place to come because there were still jobs," he said. "The Detroit economy and Milwaukee economy have not done so well in the '80s and '90s. But what has occurred in the Latino community is the establishment of new businesses, primarily service-oriented businesses that serve the Latino communities that were established in the '50s and '60s." Mexican restaurants and bars along Mitchell Street and in other parts of Milwaukee attract non-Latinos, but it's Latinos that keep the bakeries and grocery stores open, Figueroa said. "There is enough money in the economy that people can sustain retail establishments by primarily relying on Latino clientele," he said. It's that sense of community that led Montes and her husband to move from a downriver suburb of Detroit to the southwest side. "I feel like I'm at home," she said. "I go to get a haircut, I speak Spanish. I go to mercado (market), I speak Spanish. My daughter goes to school and there are a lot of Latino kids. It's a great feeling."**** Just wanted to post something that didn't portray immigrants as gang bangers, drug cartels, or welfare recipients. I am sure articles like these get overlooked.**** more
