There have been sporadic attacks in the Olievenhoutbosch informal settlement, south west of Centurion, for more than two years, apparently because foreigners have been able to access low-cost housing that South Africans have been waiting to receive for years. Wednesday night saw a resurgence of xenophobic attacks there. Seven years after the advent of democracy, Bronwyn Harris of the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation published the results of her research into xenophobia, stating that not only black Africans but also economic migrants were taking the brunt of the violence. "Xenophobia is a phenomenon that is on the increase - foreigners are the new enemy," she said in the report published just days before the United Nations World Racism Conference held in Durban in 2001. more

Like most schemes, once the paper’s carbon footprint is established, manufacturers offset it by investing in green projects. At the same time, customers can choose papers that have a low carbon footprint because they have been sourced locally. For example, in the US, Rolling Stone magazine became the first mainstream magazine to print with carbon neutral paper, using Canadian-made Catalyst Cooled. Most manufacturers are now offering partly or fully recycled paper in their range of products. more

Joe Camel is gone, so is the Marlboro Man and all the billboards that used to lure kids to try smoking. They were removed and some were replaced by anti-smoking ads, as part of the master settlement agreement to curb tobacco marketing to youth. So where do the tobacco companies advertise?

Store marketing techniques include where the cigarettes are placed in the display, which the companies pay the retailer for, price promotions, such as discounts or buy one, get one free, and the signs that accompany the display. Here the cigarette sales are combined with a campaign for the juvenile diabetes research foundation.

Someone in business and finance asked "how do I make money online". I gave him an answer on how I do it, and I was reported. I tried to appeal it and they rejected my appeal (twice) and took 20 points from my account. I feel that it was top contributors who reported me because everytime I post anything in Business and Finance, it gets reported. I think that some of the Top Contributors automatically assume that it's impossible to make money online. They think everything is a scam. I think people should be more careful when reporting answers in this section. You tell me, was this answer solicitation, and HOW? my answer: "Start an online community, a mini myspace in other words or forum. I have a few dating sites and I use adwords to get members. The site is free and I only have about 800 members so far on my main site, but once I have more (about 5,000 or more), I will place ads on there and make money from the ads just like myspace does. There's free software out there for social sites so after you install it, you just work on getting members to sign up. I use Google adwords to advertise mainly. My main site is an asian site so its cheaper for me to advertise since I only only show ads to people out of Asian countries. This is cheaper for advertising, but it also means I'll make less once I place ads on there, because clicks from people in Asia don't pay as well since they don't buy as much online as Americans, Canadians etc. As far as selling domains, that's not easy. I used to do it but it's just getting harder now with the economy the way it is. But most of the people I sold domains to were other domain investors. Advertising is recession proof though. There is always people who are looking to advertise their businesses, even when the economy is bad. Another thing you can do is buy misspelled domains or domains you think you can park. I park domains and some have been pretty successful. There's this one celebrity that just became real famous (realized I can't say his name for certain reasons), and right around the time this was happening, I bought about 4 domain names that are misspellings of his name. Now people searching for his name on the internet who misspell it, end up at my parked page, where I have ads that some of them click on."notice how I said "There's free software out there". They got me so nervous just to mention any company other than Google in this section. I took extra precaution and was still reported. Why? more

I have a small business with 4 employees. We are all currently using different email clients (free accounts, like Yahoo, Hotmail, MSN, Gmail). We each have our own work email addresses (name@businessname.com) set up to send/receive emails to our separate free email accounts, and separate calendars. If I want to look at my coworkers' calendars, I have to log on to three separate websites! We are starting to really rapidly grow, and need to streamline our work emails; make it more open and viewable by each of us, especially our calendars. Great feature to have would also be the ability to share files (some sort of storagecapability, accessible from anywhere) I've been looking at different hosted Email Clients, such as Blue Tie, which has a lot of the features I want, except that they don't support the free accounts that my business is currently using. I read the following article published in the malaysian Star paper:- Is this what the Africans and Nigerians doing now in Malaysia? KUALA LUMPUR: The Black Money scam, also known as the Nigerian 419 scam, was reported by Interpol to have surfaced in Malaysia in 1998. (419 refers to a section of a Nigerian law that deals with fraud.) Most of these con artists enter the country on a social visit pass which allows them to stay up to 30 days. They tend to enrol in local colleges, some even reputable ones, just to obtain student visas so that they could extend their stay here. These so-called students are believed to pay off college staff to mark their attendance. They would then send out random emails and SMS, promising huge piles of money. Usually a “processing fee” is required in advance from their targets. In some of the cases, the victim lost big amounts of money without realising it until the fraudster goes missing. They are such smooth operators that a number of victims took loans from Ah Longs to pay them. In the Black Money scam, victims are told about a stash of bank notes which had been dyed black to avoid Customs detection. The money was supposedly kept in a safe somewhere and the victim should purchase a type of chemical to wash off the dye which would then unveil “genuine” US dollars. The victim would be promised a share of the money. The supposed origin of the riches varied with each new victim. The most popular version is that the money is the lost fortunes of former Nigerian dictator General Abacha which need to be transported out of Nigeria without the Customs knowing it. Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Koh Hong Sun said the con men, upon meeting their target, would produce a small vial of washing liquid called “Universal Automatic Washer” and ask the victim to select any black bank note at random. The black banknote would be washed but with a sleight of hand,the con man would substitute it with a real note. Victims are given the “washed” bank notes and are encouraged to verify their authenticity at a money changer. “They would ask the victim to buy the chemical in order to process more money and that the costs of the chemicals are very high,” he said. These con artists modus operandi of “layering,” where a different person is sent to each meeting with the victim. According to sources, places like Puchong Prima, a hotel in Ampang and several areas in Kepong are regular meeting spots for such transactions. Using laptops along with a special software, the con men are also able to forge government documents. Comm Koh, who confirmed this, said that raids on the “students’ residence” found no textbooks but merely computers and laptops. In a raid conducted by the police recently, police arrested 29 Nigerians at their office at Metro Prima in Kepong. All those arrested claimed that they were undergraduates in the Klang Valley, showing their student cards instead of passports. A check by The Star showed that some colleges here had about 70% African students. These places provide hassle-free enrolment for foreign students who pay application fees ranging from US$170 to US$330. Investigations also revealed that these so- called students did not have a clear financial source, yet they had no problems paying tuition fees and sending money home to their countries. In fact, some of them live in posh condominiums and drive luxury cars like the BMW X5. They are also known to use local women to carry out their deception, targeting single mothers or college students and using their bank accounts to conduct their shady business. Some of them, when caught by police, would falsely claim to be Muslims and recite verses from the Quran to gain sympathy, said sources. Most of these con artists are deported to their home countries as authorities usually lack evidence to charge them. However, a number of them would return to Malaysia under different passports. Comm Koh said the authorities were using biometric systems as a measure against such the conmen to prevent them from returning. “But as long as there are Malaysians who are fuelled by greed, there will be someone to take advantage of them,” he said. more

So...I can't believe that I fell in this trap but I did...so just to warn others. There are more posts related to this on Yahoo answers, but a little older...so I thought I would refresh the info. There are a lot of internet money making scams out there, but these people get better and better. They advertise on what it seems like legit websites, they say they will only charge you $1 for shipping fees and they put Google in their name to make it more credible. Anyway, after one pays the $1 then you can see if you look carefully on the bottom of the page, with very small letters, that they will charge you a membership fee of ~79 monthly. They never say anything about this before you pay. Below I pasted the e-mail confirmation I got from them...and it says something about a membership fee now, but still not how much it is. People apparently got charged the amount after 7 days without even knowing why. Anyway...right after I signed up for it I called the 1-800- number listed below and they cancelled my account. But still I'm worried about my credit card...I'll have to watch it carefully! So...be careful out there...all these internet money making websites are scam! They wanted someone who knows advanced accounting formulas. I've taken a class in college (about 4 years ago) on the Microsoft Suite. I learned basic adding formulas, how to make charts, etc I've taken tests through staffing agencies that said that I was about average on excel. My boss also told the temp agency that I didn't know how to use word also. Yet I have never sent him a word doc. I've tested high in word, I have been using word since middle school, and I have a degree in Graphic Design, so I am comfortable using word, and it's basic features. I know that I am not a super admin pro at it that knows every little feature on it, plus for me I have higher advanced program knowledge of professional desktop software, so I use that. Unless I am just typing a plain letter or so. but I know how to adjust margins, word count, put on page numbers, turn into a web page.. etc anyways so now I'm afraid that they think that I misrepresented myself My resume never said anything about accounting. I've helped a small business, and myself as a freelancer keep track of invoices, payments, past dues, collections, and purchasing materials, but I have never used excel to keep track of sales, accounting etc. I have used excel to keep track of data, and have herd from past jobs that they really liked the way that I was able to create charts, and organize data in excel, and was very useful for the whole office to be on the same page. They want to do another test on on excel, (on my free time of course, which I have none with a family, freelance projects, etc) The temp agency gave me a tutorial. Most of it's pretty easy, except for in the end when it gets into advanced formulas. The tutorials doesn't really teach much except for steps to take. I need to know why, why did the makers of excel choose this program to be set up this way, what's the logic behind it,and I need to find some other advanced online places to learn these. I also am wondering if I should summon up my Transcripts from college to prove that I did take the course, and also to ask my old temp agency in my old town to dig up my testing records to send over. or would this be looked at as defensive behavior ? I apologize for the length of this but i hope you take the time to read and give a genuine opinion. I am really at a loss here and not sure what to do. i believe my future depends on this. i really need this job, its perfect....but i am just...not...sure....i will try to make this short and easy to read: I spoke with a lady recently from yahoo chat. I was in a room and we were all talking about working from home and i mentioned in the room that i was looking to work from home. She sends me a message and asks me to view a link. The link was of a printer, a printer that is capable of printing checks. She asks me if i want to be her employee and, after a while of talking she tells me that i will be printing payroll checks for customers and sending them off via UPS next day air. She said she has ordered the printer for me and it is already on its way to my house. She showed me (in text) a copy of the UPS shipping report. Anyhow, the next thing she asked me to do and keeps asking me to do is get 100 - 200 UPS next day air shipping labels and the envelopes that go with it. She told me i could go to a UPS store and get about 10 - 20 of them and then go to another store and so on.....well, i went to the only local store within 30 miles and she only had 5...she kind of looked at me like i was crazy and was asking questions.... The ups lady asked me "whats the company name?" Thats when i realized something is up. after a few days of talking to the lady from the chatroom, she never told me the company name. ups lady asked me if i had a UPS account, and repeated that i MUST have a UPS account in order to get that many supplies in that amount. i basically told her the story here and she called her supervisor. he came down and told me he would have a sales rep call me. welll, the sales rep called me and basically said that i have to have an account (UPS accounts require a credit card, and i do not have one.) I told the lady from the chatroom about this and she said "I have always gotten them free, i have never needed to give a company name or UPS account number" she basically danced around the questions: "what is the company name?" "what is YOUR UPS account number?" "Won't i need the company name//UPS account information anyways to ship out these checks??" "What about the w-4?" "how can i file my taxes next year if i dont have all this information?" in the end she told me the company name was named after her since she started the business. she said the w4 would have to wait until she expanded bigger she gave me an invalid UPS account number registered to someone in amarillo. I have not brought the last part up to her yet because she just keeps telling me to go to the UPS offices and get these ASD's and envelopes, i kept telling her they wont let me do it without an account number. i am just going to wait and see if the printer actually arrives before i start doing anything major. as far as she told me, i would be paid once a month $1000 after taxes She has not sent any software for me to view and she has not said anything about any type of training....i figured we could use this time to train me on the materials...... I wanted to speak with her or call her and she said she was in paris for a conference meeting.... i told her that yahoo has a calling feature and she said her computer does not support audio and she does not have a webcam. she said she is from Fresno California. please e-mail me with any questions you might have or know of someone that also does this for a living or if you know for sure its a scam. after i bought my computer from circuit city, they decide that there going to declare bankruptcy. i had bought 2 computers from them, one of the computers ended up getting its screen cracked and in a result to that i had to bring it back to circuit city and they would replace it for me. well long story short it never got replaced cuz they said that the cost of the repair exceeded the amount of the warranty so i ended up losing about $500 and only received a check for the retail price of the computer. now im starting to have some problems with the other computer, it caught a virus called a trojan downloader/trojan agent/trojan fake/ which is a fake anti software that downloads it self to the computer and is unrecognizable by your own anti software and is very hard to find on the computer especailly if there are more then 1 account. well i had to download malwarebytes antisoftware to help with this problem but the problem is so bad that even after detecting the virus and saying that it would finishing deletion apon restarting, but it never does. now my computer is of coarse getting alot slower and i have seen that blue screen a couple of times, along with a couple of other problems here n there. i wanted to know what should i do about getting it fixed sense circuit city is now going out of business, or is there something that i could maybe do to fix the problem and delet this virus thats hiding on my computer. any info is helpful. if you know where i could maybe bring the computer sense there is no more circuit city, or maybe you might know of a software, web link or anything to help me. another thing is that im short on cash so if anyone might know of a free program that will truely help me in deleting this virus of maybe something cheap that i could afford, it would be great. please again any info is helpful but not stupid answers.and i just noticed its mostly located in my guest account more
