More than 75 businesses, including CTS Telecom, KSS Enterprises and Applied Imaging, answered questions and staffed informational booths at the expo, hosted by the Kalamazoo Regional Chamber of Commerce and held at the Radisson Plaza Hotel & Suites in downtown Kalamazoo.

The event was sponsored by Station Casinos Inc., Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Michigan, Allegra Print & Imaging, Business Review, MiBiz, Michigan Works! Employment Services and Midwest Communications Inc.

Ninety percent of the businesses in attendance have 25 employees or fewer, making the event important for networking and finding potential clients, said J.R. more

Voting Question: K-Lite Codec pack - how do I ensure I get a trouble free install?

I have an elderly, ex networked, office ASUS computer (a discard) used in a sales admin dept - audio was disabled and the codecs I had to download from ASUS to get audio CDs to play. It does not play video media even though WMP is installed. Couldn't fathom the ASUS website at all as far as the Video codecs were concerned: and they failed to respond to request for advice. I was recommended to install the K-Lite Pack as this will cover practically all requirements and should reactivate WMP as well. Several codecs are listed under audio and video already (including the audio codecs I got from ASUS, but I recognise none of the others. Forums are vague about the actual process of installing a pack with respect to what steps to take when there are codecs already in place albeit not, necessarily all the ones you need. They can be installed selectively but then you have to know (up front) what codecs you MUST have and then, where to get them and then, the tiresome job of installing them individually. I am looking for that 'one shot cures all' solution and the K-Lite Pack looks the business. I did try downloading it on my main (HP) computer, but it only corrupted some of the software already in place. Happily a restore rectified this (I hope) so what indeed is the safest procedure........anybody? Thank you Nearlyman more

Resolved Question: Why does my page redirect to a scan then try to download?

Okay, let me ellaborate a little. It used to happen only on more obscure sites. I'm an anime editor and critique so I find myself in some obscure sites. Anyway, I'll just be minding my own business when all of a sudden a pop up comes up saying my pc has viruses and harmful software, and that the site can provide a free scan. I have the opion to OK this scan or CANCEL the scan, however, no matter which option I hit the scan begins anyway. The scan is inside my internet window and looks just like the scan window my pc makes when it scans. However, the scan goes amazingly fast, almost to fast to read or do anything. I tried clicking on some things in the internet window but it won't access anything. That was my first hint that this was a problem. Then, everytime after the "scan" is complete, instead of showing me results, it tries to download something discretely to my pc! Norton ok'ed the download but good ol' avast! sent up a blaring message that this was a bad file. Ever since then I have just closed out my internet window when this happens but it's gotten more frequent (so has my work on the internet). Last night it did it while I was on myspace! What exactly is this? A virus? A scam? Does anyone know? Also, does anyone know how to make it stop? more

I run 2 small businesses that are completely separate from each other. One is registered for VAT and the other is not. I recently obtained a virus/trojan named Malware defense and it claims to be a virus protection software when in reality it is the virus itself and it pops up bogus warnings and claims my computer is under attack and then asks for you guessed it, my credit card number. I have tried downloading free software to remove the virus and again they themselves want oddly the same amount of money and your credit card number.. This really makes me wonder if the programmers who create to protect people also themselves create programs to destroy computers as a way to bring in Business. Im telling you this because i don't want you to think im cheap and am only looking to find a cheap way to solve my computer hassle's, this is not the case its because i not only want to save money i also truly believe most computer problems are started and most viruses are created by those who offer services to remove them. Please read full description!!! I recently upgraded my AVG 8.5 free to AVG 9 free on my Vista business 32 bit OS. After it installed and restarted, I tried to open Firefox, and it wouldn't open. I then proceeded to attempt to open Internet Explorer and it had the same problem. I tried to use the system restore program to go back to before AVG 9 was installed , but after it booted, it didn't restore AVG 8.5 free and did not have an anti-virus software. I'm guessing Vista won't let you download things or import files without an anti-virus program, I decided to give AVG 9 free another chance, the same problem arrived. I have already tried to add Firefox as an exception to the resident shield but to no avail. I really need accurate help!!! Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Argh! Need help with free 14-day US FFXI trial?

I've downloaded the trial itself and all the requisite software, but the registration key thing is givin' me lots of trouble. I went to the following site (https://secure.playonline.com/freetrialus/top.html) to download the key, and everything went smoothly...except when I input the code, it's invalid. I noticed that the email I got was from "ocr@eu.playonline.com", which doesn't seem to match up with the whole "US" business. So basically, it seems as though I'm going to the right place to download the code, but the email they send me contains a code for the EU trial, I guess? This is stupid and confusing, can anyone help? more

Hello everyone, I am a earnest follower of Lord Jesus Christ and I believe in him with all my heart.I believe that He is going to bome back sooner,very sooner... So that I am continually monitoring myself whether I am committing any sins,big or small.I have been using pirated audios,videos,games etc. for a long time.But one day,perhaps a month ago our God gave me a revelation that by using these pirated stuff I was committing sin.He also made me realize that I am supporting the folks who are involved in the piracy business.So overnight I discarded 100GB of pirated stuff in te form of software,audio,video etc. and from then on I only am using original stuff or free stuff from the internet.My doubt is that is it a sin to download the videos from the "YOutube" website??The website is free but again I am confused whether is it a sin to download the videos,as there's no way,in most cases,to know whether a video is free or copyrighted.SO please suggest what I should do.abandon visiting the you tube website?Or any other advice is much appreciated. Ok people I don't have a clue about computers and I have managed to get some dirty virus/spyware thing on it where there is a notice popping up beside the clock saying my computer is infected and windows has detected spyware infection. I know that this is the virus itself, its getting rid of it thats my problem. I had norton installed on the computer but when I tried opening it on the desktop, nothing happened. So I deleted it because I was going to download free AVG software from the net and Ive been told not to have more than one antivirus thing on my comp. So when I had the Norton deleted and went to download the AVG, it won't download. I have tried downloading a few antivirus things and I think the virus isn't letting them download, if that makes any sense?? I've got a list of files/folders which i downloaded from a site - those files/folders are an OS - Windows Vista Business 32 -bit. I need an ISO out of it so is there any tools i can use? I want a free software that does the job well... tried PowerISO but can't do it - perhaps i got the trial version? ISOBuster seems only work for ripping of a dvd/cd? Also tried "Free ISO creator" which didn't help much and MagicISO is similar to PowerISO. *As my PC contains pre-installed Vista Business with it i cannot extract an ISO from the original disc as suppliers these days don't even ship them with the PC they sell. more

What i was planning on doing was burning these dvds for local people in my small town of 10,000+ and family / friends. To start this i need -new vhs player $40ish -software $80 -mac $1000ish or pc - $800-1000 external hard drive $60 Now what i need to know from you people out there is. Would you pay for this service? would you pay to have your old vhs home videos converted to dvd with transitions - possibly menu depending on the time it takes... gift case etc. **would try to add alot of charm to the collection to make it look professional and something that would be given as a gift also** -Also i would be willing to put these files on a free media hosting site, so in the case that they ever lost the file or don't have a dvd burner etc. they could download the files onto their computer fom a personally created account on one of these sites. I am thinking of starting an ISP business, reselling broadband internet. My Unique Selling Point would be to have access to known advertising sites blocked at the nameserver level. With no need to download any software, it would be automatically compatible with Mac, Linux, Windows and any Operating System to be invented in future. You just get the Internet ..... with gaps where the adverts aren't. Nobody else seems to be offering such a thing, yet to me it seems so blindingly obvious. What do you think is the best operating system? Here are the criteria on what would make an operating system the best: -Ease of use -Stability -Security -Use of resources -Scalability -Gaming(ability to play games, not the actual games available to the operating system) -Total cost of ownership -Speed -Rate of growth (frequency of updates and new releases) I myself think Linux(not talking about the kernal, just Linux in general like Ubuntu and Fedora) is a prime contender for being the best operating system. Give reasons why once I get input from others. Also don't be afraid to talk about operating systems that aren't as well known as Linux, Windows and Mac OS X such as BSD and Solaris. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I like Linux. Here are my reasons why: Ease of use-It takes time to learn like any new OS since I was raised on Windows, but it only took a few hours to get the gist of Linux. Ubuntu Linux was very easy to use, as the GNOME desktop was very well organised. Also Linux came with workspaces, which meant I could switch between different desktops that ran different programs so that it doesn't feel cluttered. Even if I have a lot of programs running, I can just click a button to minimize all of them to find what I need. I can also use Synaptic package manager. This makes finding and installing new software easy, as I can find whatever is available in repositories via incremental search and click to apply changes. This is much more efficient (in terms of time, safety and being less of a hassle) then searching the internet and finding a program that can potentially carry malware when you install it. I also don't have to see if the software will even work. Even if I don't like the software, I can just uninstall it with Synaptic. One big advantage this has over Windows is that I don't have to worry about losing money from buying something I don't like since it came free anyway. Another thing I want to mention is that installing of Linux is very easy. I could download Linux for free, burn the ISO onto a CD, and boot my computer with it. The main difference between a Windows installation and Linux installation was that I could install Linux to my HDD while doing stuff like browsing the internet and writing a text document. I can't say the same about Windows, since I had to install Windows to even use it, and even then it didn't come with certain drivers to make my hardware work. Stability-Linux is superb in this field. I have never had a kernal panic when I use it. I used to have the notorious BSOD with earlier versions of Windows, but I have had good luck with XP and Vista. However, if I was a person who ran servers for a large website or a business, you can count on me using a Linux kernel to run them. If there is one thing I would hate, it would be disgruntled customers who complain of my servers being down all time. Security-I never have to worry about getting a virus or other malware when using Linux. This worry free mentality lets me surf the web with comfort. But don't think I'm not careful when using Windows, as I am careful about what content I'm viewing and what e-mails are risky to open. Even so, it feels good that I don't need any virus protection that would consume system resources and cost me money. Use of resources-Linux is very efficient in this field. I no longer hear constant blips when I use it, whereas my computer would be louder when running XP and even more so with Vista. It also helps that there is no virus protection and other programs running just to keep the computer secure, as this only consumes resources. I have noticed an extension in battery life for my laptop because of this. Scalability-Another field Linux excels in, and this can go hand in hand with stability. However, it is worth noting that it can handle a large amount of data without crashing since it works great for clusters. This, and the amount of money saved from using a free operating system, makes it ideal for servers. In fact, many of the top websites on the web like Google and Amazon use Linux for their servers, along with countless other web sites. Gaming-Linux doesn't have many games available compared to Windows. This is one of the areas Linux is lacking. However, I have found that a game running on Linux will inherently run better on it than on Windows. This would stem from how it is a beast in terms of scalability and stability. Even if a game doesn't run natively on Linux, I can use WINE(WINE Is Not an Emulator) to run it. With WINE I can even run other programs that would run only in Windows under normal circumstances. You said the Linux is great for development, and I agree with this. What you are forgetting is that Windows may be good for game selection and Mac OS X may be good for designers, but this is only temporary. Once these developers for Linux fix the areas that it is lagging in (gaming and designing), then it will be more popular and may one day be the primary desktop. Gotta love open source. more

Hello I have a MAXDATA computer with Windows Vista and I would really like to reformat it (Wipe everything except personal files). The problem is I've lost my Windows vista business cd and not looking to spend alot on another disk. My friend advised I download it free off mininova I search "windows vista business" http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=windows%20vista%20business but none of them seem right. I was wondering if anyone could tell me a site where I can download the software needed to reformat a Windows Vista business (I have a blank disk to burn it too). Also how you operate it so I don't lose files like Word. Or if there is another way I could reformat it for free as I've spent a fortune on this computer already.
