Days of fun, sun: Beaches, businesses stay busy over Memorial weekend

In a quick poll of Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce members, chamber executive director Rick Reynolds discovered that business owners reported a "very strong to record-setting" weekend.

"Around here, the weather is always the wild card," Reynolds said. "It was a perfect scenario."

Four sunny days brought beachgoers to the sand. A sea of umbrellas lined the coast in Surf City on Sunday as people threw frisbees, tossed around balls and soaked in the sun.

"We were just down for the day," Tom and Pat Rauen of Staten Island, N.Y. said. "We love it. It's peaceful; it's beautiful."

They said escalating gas prices would not affect their trips to the Shore this summer.

"Gas is actually cheaper here," Tom Rauen said.

Jim Sullivan of Long Island, N.Y., agreed gas prices won't be keeping him from frequenting his house in Surf City. more

Textile engineering needs booster dose to catalyse growth

There could be a technology upgradation fund scheme for providing soft loans to spur investment in the sector.

Currently, capacity utilisation in India's textile engineering industry is fairly moderate. One reason for this is technological obsolescence. Clearly, there is a need to adopt new technologies. This could be either through indigenous R&D or through imports (there is already a fair amount of import intensity ) to meet the increasing demand, caused by the investment boom in the textile and clothing industry.

Even as large players (there are only a few of them and largely, they manufacture spindles only, and not high technology looms) are able to invest in modernisation and expansion, small and medium-sized firms tend to continue with old production techniques . more

`Underwriter's Lament' Blames Issuers for Hard Times: Joe Mysak

Investment banks eliminate lines of business that don't make money.

The Lament goes like this: Why are underwriting spreads so narrow? It's the politicians' fault! Politicians demand narrower underwriting spreads to further their careers.

What? The Lament always stops me cold. I usually ask correspondents to elaborate a bit. I mean: You can't be serious.

They are, and deadly serious. So help me out here. I haven't lived in all 50 states, and have only visited a handful of cities. Do politicians run on the slogan, ``I Showed the Wall Street Smarties and Made Them Sell Our Bonds for Almost Nothing''?

Urban Legend

I have never heard this particular approach, I must say. Maybe it's true. Maybe there was a time when politicians by the barrel evoked voter emotion with such sentiment. more

Business Work Software Questions asked

Open Question: Is this a conflict of interest?

I am looking at creating my own business to capitalize on a business opportunity I see in the overall field of business that I work in on a day to day basis. However I do not want to quit my job at this point until I know that my new business idea will catch on and be stable enough for me to quit. I have a pretty good gig right now so I want to make sure that by starting this business on the side that no conflict of interest exists. The product I'm looking at developing is a software application that would improve the efficiency of the current day to day processes for the general business practices in the industry. More specifically having to do with eliminating some data entry. This is not specific to the company I work for. There is no trade secret of my current employer that is involved. Anyone involved in the same industry I'm in (ie same position at a competitor) could have come up with the general business plan of what I envision on doing. I would sell the product as a supplier to businesses that operate in the same marketplace as my current employer (competitors). I do understand that a conflict of interest would exist if an employee of a company had a sideinterest in a company that supplied a product to that specific company. I would only intend on doing that with the express written permission of the company or if I stepped down from my position at the company. But at this point I want to protect my idea. Any input is appreciated. Thanks! more

Open Question: I need some guidance about onsite allowance in business visa. I am a senior software engineer.?

I have worked abroad on work permit but I have never gone onsite on business visa. I will put my question with a simple example.eg., (Qsn no. 1===>) assume that I am sent onsite in business visa with a total allowance of 1000 USD for the entire period. My expense has become 800 USD. Now I want to know, if I submit the bills of this 800 USD expense after returning to India will company reimburse it to me in Indian currency ?(Qsn no. 2===>) What about the remaining 200 USD ? Do I need to return it to company and company then return this 200 USD to me after deducting tax ?(Qsn no. 3===>) Some companies give prepaid cash cards to employees for their expense at onsite and keep on re-loading it . If the cash card is also of 1000 USD and the expense is also 800 USD from the card, then regarding the issue ofquestion no. 1 and question no. 2 will the reimbursement rule be same like cash allowance ?Valued guidance is required. more

Open Question: Bonjour for Windows can't find printer on work computer?

Hi, I just bought the time capsule 1TB. I got the internet and everything going with it. I also am using the time capsule with my printer (HP Officejet 6500). This printer is a wireless printer but I'm not using the wireless in the printer, I'm making it wireless with my time capsule. I got the one mac we have working wirelessly with it, but we have 4 Microsoft Laptops. (1 is XP Service Pack 3, 2 are XP Service Pack 2 and 1 vista) I got every laptop working with the printer wirelessly with the time capsule, BUT one computer. This is an XP Service Pack 3 BUSINESS Laptop. About a year ago, we bought an Epson Wireless Printer. I used the wireless that came with the printer. Every computer worked fine with that printer wirelessly, BUT one computer. That was an old laptop that was a Business laptop ran by the same business that runs the XP Service Pack 3 that we have now. So when we had this old business laptop ran by the same company that runs the business laptop that we own now, it didn't work with the wireless on our Epson wireless. And the computer we have now (XP Service Pack 3) can't find the Officejet printer made wireless with the time capsule. So when I downloaded Bonjour on this XP Service Pack 3, it couldn't find the Officejet printer with the time capsule. All other computers did and I did it the exact same way I'm doing it on this business laptop. I was thinking it is having trouble working wireless because, of the firewall that the business installs on this laptop. But the business also installs some weird internet connecting thing. When I connect to the internet wirelessly, I have to use this software that my work installs. I can't use the connector that comes with windows. I also have a VPN on this computer. I never use it and never will. I never connect to it. Or it might be maybe because this computer is a Service Pack 3? SOMEONE TELL ME WHY BONJOUR CAN'T FIND THE WIRELESS PRINTER!!!! PLEASE!! Is it a firewall, vpn, the internet connector the business installs, is it cause' of service pack 3??? PLEASE HELP!! 10 points for Best! more

Resolved Question: How will financing be for me?

Opening a tanning salon(something neat and sophisticated looking.) has been in my plans since I was about 14. All during high school I was home schooled and I worked for my dad cleaning newly constructed houses/businesses before they were put on the market for sale or lease. That is until things went under and he had to file for bankruptcy on all of the residential and commercial real estate that he developed. The I went to Costco for 2 years. From the 4 or so years I worked during school, I hoarded nearly every penny I made so I could fulfill my dream as an entrepreneur when I graduated from high school. Right after graduating from the Fulton County Public School System, I was set and went out looking for SOMETHING else to do to start my career in a self-owned business. Everything exceeded what my budget was set on until my dads good friends' dad was retiring and selling his repo company. So, I knew then at that time that was my opportunity. Luckily he allowed me to finance everything since he owned the stuff and he also let me walk in his lot that he's now leasing to me. So I've been in the repossession/recovery business for over a year now and with the economy HOPEFULLY shaping up, I've really been thinking about getting rid of my trucks & selling everything(of course after I have another main source of income coming in). The main reason is because I fear in about 2-3 years from now, this economy will have improved greatly and there won't be as much recovery work to cover all of my expenses associated with my company. ---OK so now my story about my young life is over, I'll get to my main concern- Although I'm only 19 now, I've had credit since I was 15(I lied about my DOB on credit card apps which has now been corrected with all 3 credit bureaus). Every since then I ALWAYS did right and kept my credit immaculate as it still is. My Transunion FICO through MyFico is at 738 and is slowly rising as my accounts grow older and as my personal vehicle is on its way to being fully paid off. I do have credit cards, but have $0 in credit card debt. Since Mar. 8th 2009 to Dec. 31st 2009, my company has grossed approx. $480K. That number may be fairly large, but considering I have 3 other drivers/employees I pay commission to, repo insurance(nearly $13K for not even the full year), rent on my ex-car lot(just over $20K for not even the full year), tax, all utilities, and after going ahead and paying my "agent" off for financing the PC's, software, trucks etc., that number was lowered significantly. Fortunately, 2010 so far is just as busy as it has been for the past 10 months and I'm even having to send repo orders back to finance companies from not having enough time to do them all(I'm not buying another truck). Like I said, I'm really thinking about going into the tanning business and it's a decision I'll have to make between now and the next 2-3 years. Would someone like me at my age(I will be 21-22yo then) have a hard time being approved for a $300K+ loan with the following factors: Company grossed $480K.(Honestly I want to leave this out of the app.) I netted about $110K during the last 3 quarters of '09.(before all of my personal bills/expenses.) I have roughly $80K in assets(2 recovery trucks, a money market account, and other misc. things). I have 3 checking accounts(2 personal, 1 business) I have 2 savings accounts. I have tax forms that have been filed and I also have bank and broker statements to prove my income. I have above average+ personal credit but no business credit.(no debt besides personal vehicle which will be paid off in 2 years or sooner) I have the knowledge, skill and common sense to know how to properly run a business. I can produce a legitimate business proposal. Hopefully within the next 2 or so years all of my assets and everything else will have grown.(if it doesn't there's a problem. lol) I know this is a lot of info, but my life ahead is really sticking to my nerves and I need support. I saw how my dad went from one minute having a lot of real estate to the next minute having to dig into his retirement money, and I want to avoid this by all means possible. I could be making a mistake by wanting to stop repossessing vehicles but as I said, I feel when this economy shapes up I won't even be grossing enough to cover everything and I don't want to lose my ***. The big question, how will banks view my status when attempting to obtain a commercial loan for roughly $300K? Would it be best if I go through the SBA? Could I get the loan w/o having to include my total grossed income? I'm literally fretting over these things. Thank all of you guys for your support. more

Open Question: How much would you expect to pay for this type of service?

I am doing some computer work for a friend this weekend, but would like to know how much it would be worth if I wanted to go into a business like this. Of course it it all properly licensed software. One boot using Live CD to access files, and back them up onto an external drive. One use of a specialized Department of Defense secure hard drive wipe utility. One Installation of Windows Vista or 7 Business Edition. One transfer of about two thousand selected files back to the computer.Backup of files takes two or three hours, secure wiping takes about eight hours, installation of operating system takes about 40 minuets, and reloading requested files can take about another two or three hours. Also, a license for the operating system is required. more

Open Question: Help! I got myself into a bit of an educational pickle?

Hi all, This is a bit stupid, I know. The thing is, I am currently studying an associates degree (2yrs) in business college, which I will then top-up with a 1½ and get my Bachelor in Business Administration or Business&Design. Now here's the thing. I can get my Business&Design degree by doing a 2yr course in multimedia-design which I am very excited about doing, for several reasons. Mainly because I think you learn something "hands-on" which you can actually use (You learn to work with software to design and develop everything from websites to film to games, you name it), which means you can go straight out and get a job as web designer or so while you are studying or while I do my continuous studies/top-up. The cool thing is, that the multimedia designer program also gives access to the 1½yr top-up to BA in Business&Design. So, the big question here is should I continue my business studies (been going for ½yr now) or should I start on the multimedia design class and start all over this fall? The problem is, I'm turning 24 this year so I'm kinda running out of time here!!!! HELP! more

Open Question: This project is due at school. I am confused on it. can any one help? I need a service and y?

While attending this class, you also work at DigiFast, a small company that creates and markets video games for educational and entertainment markets. DigiFast recently moved into River View Plaza, a four-story office building in Portland, Oregon. River View Plaza includes a lobby with a security desk and several suites on all four floors. DigiFast occupies a typical suite that includes offices for managers, full-sized cubicles for employee workstations, a conference room, and restrooms. There is a break room with a refrigerator and a microwave, but, unfortunately, the break room is on the first floor, and DigiFast is on the third floor. DigiFast is new and growing fast. The company needs more employees, but the operating budget will not allow for it presently. Meanwhile, the goal is to make the operations efficient while keeping the current employees happy. You think one way to achieve this goal is by attracting outside services to the building. The other businesses in the building are similar in size to DigiFast but focus on markets other than software: a dentist, a young lawyer, and an insurance company. The building also has several spaces not yet rented. At capacity, the building can accommodate approximately 1,300 people. The location of River View Plaza is ideal, and the size of the office is adequate. However, the owners of the building supply space but little else in the way of service. The entrepreneurial spirit in you views this as a golden opportunity to attract a new service for DigiFast and other companies in the building. Your task is to convince your colleagues, manager, the owner of DigiFast, and the building management company your service has great potential and would be useful for your company’s employees and others in the building. A committee of key individuals will make the decision to move forward . . . or not. The committee consists of the following: •Charlotte Alexander, the founder and owner of DigiFast. She has a master’s degree in computer engineering and has spent 20 years working in IT industries. Charlotte is interested in efficiency and company growth. •Mark Jackson, your manager: Mark was recently recruited from a major video marketing company. He has an MBA from a prestigious university and two years’ work experience. Mark cares about the bottom line—he favors creativity as long as profit does not suffer. •Stacie Matthews, computer programmer: Stacie is currently working on her undergraduate degree in computer programming. She has extensive experience in developing video games but wants to finish her education to advance in this industry. Stacie is practical and creative. •Dave Martinez, graphic designer: Dave is a self-taught graphic artist who has won numerous awards for his designs. He is imaginative and innovative. •Steve Taylor, facilities manager: Steve is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day maintenance of the building, as well as renting available space to companies compatible with the businesses in the building. Although he is friendly and easygoing, Steve expects a job to be done right. Task Your task is to choose a service you think would be useful for DigiFast and most employees in the building. Remember: The goal of the service is to increase efficiency of operations and/or keep the current employees happy. As you think about the argument you will ultimately present to the committee, consider the different needs and personalities of the five committee members you have to persuade. All of the committee members have to agree on your service. You also need to anticipate any objections they might have as well as ways you can overcome those objections. more

Resolved Question: What career path do you think will earn me the most money???

I'm a Canadian residing in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada. After high school, I'm enrolling in a B.com (bachelor of commerce) program at the University of Alberta. My major will be accounting and my minor will be finance. After University, I will be pursuing a CA (Chartered Accountant) designation. I will spend a couple years working as an tax accountant/auditor. After experience as an accountant, I will be pursuing a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst). When I obtain this designation, I may either i) Start an accounting practice, ii) Work as a CFA for a few years then start an investment firm or iii) Start working in the public sector. I plan on becoming a careerist and making a truck load of money. Either way, by the time I feel like I'm ready, with my wealth and business connections, I plan on starting a venture capital firm. FYI these are the only areas of business that I'm savvy in. It's to late for me to become a software tycoon or whatever. In addition, I am not naive. I have a very good idea of what I want to do and I would like to hear some intelligent input on this issue Danke more

Anyway, I'll just be minding my own business when all of a sudden a pop up comes up saying my pc has viruses and harmful software, and that the site can provide a free scan. I have the opion to OK this scan or CANCEL the scan, however, no matter which option I hit the scan begins anyway. The scan is inside my internet window and looks just like the scan window my pc makes when it scans. However, the scan goes amazingly fast, almost to fast to read or do anything. I tried clicking on some things in the internet window but it won't access anything. That was my first hint that this was a problem. Then, everytime after the "scan" is complete, instead of showing me results, it tries to download something discretely to my pc! Norton ok'ed the download but good ol' avast! sent up a blaring message that this was a bad file. Ever since then I have just closed out my internet window when this happens but it's gotten more frequent (so has my work on the internet). Last night it did it while I was on myspace! What exactly is this? A virus? A scam? Does anyone know? Also, does anyone know how to make it stop? more

Voting Question: How can I create the software for a company I am starting if I don't have coding experience?

I have a great idea to start a software company, but do not know how to code. How can I create the software I want without doing it myself? I guess I could take on a business partner that has experience developing software, but I would rather pay someone in a work for hire contract than give up more valuable equity. Anyone know if I can outsource this kind of assignment? more

Voting Question: Will IT Support Experience Help Me to Move to Business Side Work (e.g Sales or Marketing)?

I am applying for a job at IBM, and apparently the job is an IT support job (I thought it were a consulting job). I haven't been informed whether I am accepted or rejected, though. I am wondering whether I should accept the offer should they offer me the job. I want to work in business side (such as sales or marketing) because the salary there is lucrative. Moreover, my long term goal is starting my own business (any kind of business, as long as it's legal and profitable). I guess business side experience is more useful for entrepreneur. But I don't know whether experience in IT support job will help me in moving to business side work (or perhaps, will it be an obstacle?). That's why I am still undecided whether I should accept the offer should they offer me the job, and that's why I am asking this question here :D FYI, my educational background is IT. I graduated from university mid last year (with bachelor degree). I have been working as software engineer since then. Any help is appreciated :D more

Why cyberspace isn’t, and will never be, nirvana By Clifford Stoll | NEWSWEEK From the magazine issue dated Feb 27, 1995 After two decades online, I’m perplexed. Resolved Question: How do I tell my boss I quit?

Almost three months ago, I gathered with some older geek friends and we decided to start a company. I have tried to make it work, but I'm at my wit's end, and need to quit. But how? My boss is not a good boss. He is in college, and doesn't have enough time to focus on the business. I'm the only one with web design/programming skills, and when he found a possible client where I would be doing ALL the work, he took the job without consulting me (because he wanted money). Now he expects me to simply have the job done, though he refuses to tell me what I need to do, refuses to answer my questions, and refuses to let me talk to the client directly (though I'll be doing all the work). Then he says I'll be getting 20% of the payment myself, the rest going to the rest of the (three) employees. He's also doing everything in his power to evade taxes. It's not even a legal company yet, and I'm afraid we might get sued by our client, since I have nothing to show (I don't know what the hell to do!). Last time I tried to quit, he got all emotional and said things like, "I'm trying to leave emotion out of this, but we really need you." It's been three months, I've built the company website, I've done various other pieces of work (assembling software packages for distribution, providing web space for the company, organizing and setting up services like online chat/help, etc.), and I have received: No money. Last time he and my other coworker were over at my place working, I tried to get things done, while they went into my garage with my brother's friends and got high. How do I tell my boss I quit? I need out of this!Several of you have said things like "just walk in" or "never go back"... we don't have a location. He's just sitting at his place in the university district. Anyway, thanks for all of your advice. I think I'll let him know now. more

Open Question: Software Distribution causing computer to freeze!?

Lately the computer at my family has been freezing, at first i thought it was because of the router we just installed but from researching a lot of sources say it shouldnt cause a problem, i also removed it and it didnt help, i later found out from doing a system restore that the problem was a software distribution 3.0 update that is causing my computer to freeze here and there and then nothing will be usuable for a few seconds, the mouse wont move and keys dont go into effect, everytime i do a restore to before the update the computer works just fine but a few days later it will be updated again and the computer would freeze i normally wouldnt mind this as much but i have to keep driving to my business just to do a restore can be annoying, how can i fix this? ive changed the automatic updates to notify me but not install or download them but the file still downloaded, (x that i just realized that after i did the restore the default setting was back to automatic updates being turned on) ive not changed it to have it turn off but im wondering will this really fix the problem? ive checked the recent updates on the programs list and removed some of the updates that looked suspicious that werent needed and were recent but i noticed after i removed it, it was still freezing, i did a system restore and the problem is fixed, but is there another way i can fix this without having to do a restore everytime and driving to my family business everytime this happens because no one else knows how to deal with it? The results of my current system restore - the computer still freezes after the restore i just did, this is a first, how can i fix this now? Running Sony Vaio Desktop - Windows XP running systemok scratch out what i said abt my most recent restore, it turns out the restore wasnt successful so thats why my computer continued to freeze, i just did another one and its not freezing anymore but would still like to deal with this issue incase something does happen again i dont want to keep doing a system restore everytime, i think this is the 3rd or 4th time i had to do deal with it so far this week more

Voting Question: Need some advice on my Software Developement Start-up.?

So I'm a Junior in college and I'm in the process of starting a partnership with a friend of mine for a software developement company. We've both got the majority of it down but one thing we're unsure about is fair payment. For the first few projects we're telling our programmers that we're all doing it for the sake of having something professional grade out on the market so that we have something under our belts when we go out into the job market. However if things go well we intend to keep the business going. We're thinking about doing a commission based pay at first. Paying each individual (programmers first since it's just them and us two) a percentage of the money made off of each unit sold. Then once we see a stream of steady revenue we intend on switching over to actual pay. Perhaps doing a bit of contracting somewhere in between to make sure that they get paid a little bit more. So I'm wondering what percentages are fair for each programmer at first? And since my friend and myself are running everything else, are there any models for what our own compensation should be? We're both aware that this is a start-up and that reinvestment in the company will certainly happen. Pay for us is certainly less important than reinvesting and paying the people that work under us, but we want to make sure we get the numbers right first before we have our employee's sign any kind of contract. more

Resolved Question: How do I pay tax for services I sell on different websites if I'm based in the U.K?

Hello, I came up with an idea to sell my services online. However, I'm not sure if I need to register my business and pay tax as I would maximum get £200-£300 a month if its successful. Basically the idea is that for a particular charge I would retouch digital photos for people and it would include drawing with special software (so you can call it art as well). I would certainly have some expenses as well like laptop and tablet depreciation, paypal fee for each transaction, website hosting monthly fee and maybe some other expenses like advertising. I would also be willing to reinvest money I get from this hobby/service into new equipment and software. So my question is how do I register this legally as i wouldn't say its a serious business (i wouldn't be making much profit of it, sometimes when i lack ideas, i might not sell anything at all) Second question is, Would the situation change if I sold the same service on ebay on my personal acc as i would automatically be paying ebay 15% tax which goes to Luxembourg and fee for each paypal transaction as well. And last question, if I sell my digital photo work on a lot of different websites like ebay, shutterstock.co.uk and my personal website how do I register it then. Now it is not my only income, its just a hobby and the money I would get I would use for purchasing more equipment for the same activity (cameras, lenses, software and etc) more

Resolved Question: How do I delete Antivirus Soft?

Well, this sucks. My dad got the virus "Antivirus Soft" downloaded onto his business computer earlier tonight and I've been working for more than an hour on trying to get it off. He needs this computer in order to run his business and I warned him not to surf the internet on it, but he didn't listen. Either way, I'm trying to get rid of this pesky program. I've used the "rkill.com" along with MalwareBytes to try to remove it. But, it was not detected on the first scan. I updated the MalwareBytes software and am in the middle of running my second scan right now. I don't feel comfortable removing it manually since this computer is of such importance and I don't want to mess it up. Is there any other way to get rid of this thing? I've heard that a system restore may work, but if I do a system restore will it actually get RID of the program or just put it in the background? HELP ME PLEASE!!!! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: I have reoccuring nightmares about my ex fiance for the last 8 months?

My ex fiance spent 24/7 together for about a year and 1/2; he is very wealthy and we basically were just living in Florida Keys fishing and so forth. Technically I was working for him on a project that with an Impossible objective; he developed software that he uses to run his own company but was not sellable to other corporations because of better designed alternatives in the market already and I was suppose to sell it. Plus we were in the Keys who was I going to sell it to? He worked remote running his manufacturing company. he was very abusive and blamed me it wouldnt sell no matter what I or anyone would say, he was convinced it was my skills and I have always worked for large companies as one of the top producers. This would not sell no fault of mine, many people had tried to sell it before me and couldnt and told him the same thing. We agreed when I started this business relationship, if it wasnt going to sell, I would just get another job; he and I were dating before the business stuff. He wanted to go to Florida Keys and I went with him with the thought when we returned I would get another job. In the interim he tried to make me the cook and maid as an alternative; since I was being paid to sell. He is in his 50's and has never done a load of laundry himself; I didnt mind doing it; I just didnt like feeling like I was the less than in the relationship so I could do things he wouldnt do himself. He got very abusive and demeaning, I gave him back his ring and ended it. He immediately started going on dates, told me he was over it and hadn't loved me for months. It really blew my mind and have had nightmares since about his complete unemotional detachment. It has been hard, I found a new sales job with a large company, a new life and he couldnt care less; plus I had to take chemo immediately after the break up which he pushed me into to get rid of my Hep "c"; we ended after the first shot and he was off to the races within about two weeks dating. As I mentioned he is very wealthy and I have completely changed my lifestyle, which I am proud of, but it has been a rough change with everything when going through treatment. Any idea what these dreams could mean that I keep interacting with him and he is just cold and distant? I have them almost every night and it is driving me crazy, I just want to completely move on and put this behind me and I feel like it is holding me back. I know he is not thinking about me at all. Any ideas why I keep dreaming this? more

Resolved Question: Manager has suspended me for her mistakes; owner of business won't return my phone calls.... HELP!!!?

I started a job at a chiropractic center in January, the 14th, to be exact. I "trained" for 2 days before I began closing on my own. I made a few mistakes, but quickly corrected them and continued learning the their way of doing things. Within a week, my manager began asking me about appointments that were booked wrong- and basically telling me that I ruined her morning/or afternoon because clients were upset that their appointments were either at the wrong time or not on the schedule at all! I thought it sounded funny, because I'm very experienced with the software they work on- I've worked with it before at a previous job. I began keeping track of all the appointments I made and making sure everything was perfect. This week I was accused of shorting the drawer 2 days in a row; come to find out she miscounted a roll of dimes as "40" rather than 50 on 1 day (yes, a huge deal was made about it) The second day she missed several rolls of coins and I had to point it out to her that day as well! This past weekend 3 people were booked for 1 appointment; when I asked who they spoke with- they all replied with her name. She blames me even as I type this, saying I should have made sure that everything was in the system correctly. She asked if she could put me on probation yesterday, and told me not to clock in and took my key. I told her "No, because the mistakes happening around here aren't from me. " I was told that "probation period" is admitting fault. Is it? She told me that this is a "work at will" state, and that she owes no explanation for letting me go. She has several clients who have written horrible reviews about the business online and her name comes up in quite a few of them! 2 of the reviews should have proved to her that she messed up the booking or what-not. Even then, she tried to connect it back to me. This business is a franchise; I was told to call "Franchise Corporate"... I have to find out about it. What would you do??? HELP! ***I know I have options; I'd just like to know the opinions of you kind people out there.***I have called the owner several times and left a voicemail. She said she was on her way today w/the checks only for her husband to show up. At this point I'm at home and not being paid. Thanks for the answers so far.... not looking too good, but I do appreciate the response. more

Resolved Question: No performance tax and no radio tax- are they the same thing? We need radio left alone, save something! Okay.?

I heard on my local FM rock station a commercial aired by the radio broadcasters ( association?) and it hit me like a ton of bricks really. Radio works just as it is. If you mess with it by making sure the big labels capitalize on profits gained by a revamped system be very sure that you don't ruin the simple integrity of advertiser supported radio that was standardized so long ago. For the musician there is more change now than ever. We can now record for the cost of a computer and a few good programs. In fact you don't even have to be a musician to make music anymore. That is, you don't necessarily have to master a traditional instruments fingerings as much as master it's sound. If you can master your ear then you might be the next great hit maker. In fact the credentials of a well outfitted musician is to know pro-tools and have a degree in music business. It really is a different world than it was 20 years ago when I moved to L.A. and went to school for studio musicians. Guitar is my instrument. Now you can get every Les Paul guitar sound you can imagine for $400 or so in a software program. I'll believe it when I hear it through a 1963 Marshall stack. Music is a great and beautiful thing that even if there are greedy bastards skimming off of it there will always be great music that will be alive and listened to for free even if it's without electricity! So I'll quit rambling. Save for WLVQ Columbus Q-FM 96.3 more

Voting Question: I need to find a certain software program Help!?

My dad is very computer illiterate and is now wanting a home computer to help run his contracting business. He wants a program that he could talk to the computer and it do stuff for him. lol I know that there is a program that you can speak into a microphone and it types it out for you, but as far as I know it just works for Word programs. My question is where I could find this program and research what all else it might can do. I have looked at some stores on line and on Dell's website and had no luck. more

Voting Question: What is the best website designing software for my business?

Here's my issue. I am starting a "handyman" business and want to make a website. I know that I can get a domain name from Network Solutions or whatever company I may choose, but I am not sure how to design it. I mainy just want to have my contact information on the website, a spot for people to e-mail me or give me their contact information, maybe have a page of past work that I have done, etc. Is there software that I can get to easily accomplish all of this? Thank you all for your input. more

Resolved Question: HyperCam 2 isn't recording sound?

I've searched over the internet for the solution but I could not find it. I have HyperCam 2. I'm using it to record myself creating a song in FL Studio 9. I do not have a mic. However, I don't think I need a mic. to record sound, right? The software is supposed to record sound from the screen, correct? The video works fine but there's no audio. My OS is Vista Business. I've done the whole "Right-Click on volume, go to recording devices, show disabled devices, and select stereo mix yada yada yada"----I don't have stereo mix there, whether I uncover disabled devices or not. Please help, because this software will be pretty useless to record FL Studio if it doesn't record sound. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: electronic pilot logbook on-line or web based?

Recently, for about the 100th time, I lost my little red log book. Of course it was returned, but it did raise an issue for me. Many of my FOs log their time on their PDA, phone, whatever. I happen to own a Droid, and started looking for Droid logbook software, but apparently, none exists. So I started thinking about web based subscription software, and Google finds a few of those. Would those of you who have experience with electronic logbooks please offer some recommendations? Especially with the web-based versions. I currently track: Date, Tail#, Type, From, To, Start (hh:mm), End (hh:mm), Total (hh:mm), SchedTime (hh:mm), Overs (mm), TLH (Takeoff, Landing, Holding). The TLH is just for proving instrument currency under Part 91, should the need ever arise---it never has. If I am going to do this, in addition to the above, I would like the following: 1) The ability to quickly print out layover cities for tax deductions. 2) Warnings on CFI, Medical, and any other expirations 3) Web + PC Based. Right now there are none available for the Droid. I don't want to purchase some software, then, when the next PDA/Phone comes, it out won't handle it. If web based, then there are places in the world where it won't work, but I can update when I get back to civilization. 4) Ability to download back to my PC so that I am not stuck if the provider goes out of business. 5) Reasonably priced. In the past 23 years, I have, not even once, been required by anyone to produce a log book. Not even the FAA. So I am not even certain why I am keeping it. So, if it is too hard to use, or is too expensive, I'll just stay with paper. Thanks more

Resolved Question: B&F Top Contributors: Is this solicitation?

Someone in business and finance asked "how do I make money online". I gave him an answer on how I do it, and I was reported. I tried to appeal it and they rejected my appeal (twice) and took 20 points from my account. I feel that it was top contributors who reported me because everytime I post anything in Business and Finance, it gets reported. I think that some of the Top Contributors automatically assume that it's impossible to make money online. They think everything is a scam. I think people should be more careful when reporting answers in this section. You tell me, was this answer solicitation, and HOW? my answer: "Start an online community, a mini myspace in other words or forum. I have a few dating sites and I use adwords to get members. The site is free and I only have about 800 members so far on my main site, but once I have more (about 5,000 or more), I will place ads on there and make money from the ads just like myspace does. There's free software out there for social sites so after you install it, you just work on getting members to sign up. I use Google adwords to advertise mainly. My main site is an asian site so its cheaper for me to advertise since I only only show ads to people out of Asian countries. This is cheaper for advertising, but it also means I'll make less once I place ads on there, because clicks from people in Asia don't pay as well since they don't buy as much online as Americans, Canadians etc. As far as selling domains, that's not easy. I used to do it but it's just getting harder now with the economy the way it is. But most of the people I sold domains to were other domain investors. Advertising is recession proof though. There is always people who are looking to advertise their businesses, even when the economy is bad. Another thing you can do is buy misspelled domains or domains you think you can park. I park domains and some have been pretty successful. There's this one celebrity that just became real famous (realized I can't say his name for certain reasons), and right around the time this was happening, I bought about 4 domain names that are misspellings of his name. Now people searching for his name on the internet who misspell it, end up at my parked page, where I have ads that some of them click on."notice how I said "There's free software out there". They got me so nervous just to mention any company other than Google in this section. I took extra precaution and was still reported. Why? more

Resolved Question: am transitioning from architecture field, training at a phone company call center, how do I quit early?

It is way more technical than I thought a customer service role would entail for really low pay and no benefits, 6 months temporary status. We literally have over 24 software logins and programs to navigate and endless processes for various services and types of business customers. I want to quit before taking live calls - I don't think I'm suited to such high-volume call center work and demanding schedules. I rather find a regular weekday-hours job, with benefits, as I have a 2-yr old son to care for. I live at home with family and have good savings. Obviously, I'm looking for more jobs in different fields, when home. My question is 'How do I leave this company, being on temporary status and not required to give notice, but want to leave with a professional sounding reason?' more

Resolved Question: How to become a programmer without formal education?

Hello, I am very interested in career in programming as I like to solve problems and think logically. I want to someday be part of software development team and program useful applications. My issue is that I already have a bachelor's degree in Economics and Business. I know that many programming jobs don't require formal education, but be able to show past work and show them that you know how to program in certain language that job entails. My plan of study is this: I'll be learning Python and at the same time, I'll be reading a book on algorithms, and also a book called "Code Complete." After this, I'll work on some problems with Scheme. Then, I want to be familiar with C, and finally after this, I'll start learning C# and I'll decide on what area I'll want to focus on with .NET framework and get one of the Microsoft certification. I want to make sure that I understand the foundation of programming so I'll be adaptable with this fast paced industry. I have few concerns. I am 26 years old and about to turn 27. By the time, I'll be ready to get a programming job, I'll be 28. Would employers consider hiring a programmer with no experience who's close to 30? As with most jobs I find on job posts, most would require at least couple years of experience. How would I go about finding a programming job without any experience? Also, I currently hold an inside sales position. Should I look into getting some kind of IT position? If so, what type of job could I get with no experience and minimum education so I can get my foot in the door? Any suggestions with my career change, I would greatly appreciate it!!! more

Voting Question: My chance to turn small Business into Big!?

ok, I'll try to explain in short words: My family comes from Brazil My dad has a small business for over25 years. Business: Rent and sell snooker tables, ping pongs and football(soccer) tables My dad got started really young, in 1983. By that time, his business was much better, he used to have lots of revenues sources. The main revenue source came from Bars! if you had over 50 snooker tables, it was already something. Now the business is about to fail. The bars are doind badly. But theres a new hope: Retail and personal clients. We dont have many competitors, Only average ones. Nothing special. My dad has no skills to deal with the business anymore. I'm 22, studying business and administration. I work as a broker. I thought about taking the business from my dad for 70k, and he would have the right for future cash incoming. I thought about a business plan, investing 50k in an office rent, sellers, software and a small inventory. I thought about getting a partnership to help. we would add more to our services and products. Events, eletronic games, 1 day rent tables, poker boards, cigars, everything related to playing! Question: am I dreaming too high??? more

Resolved Question: Is an MBA degree more valuable than a BSBA degree?

I'm a freshman in college and my current major is business, but I don't know if it might not be better to do another major now, and then get an MBA degree later. I hear that MBA programs accept students from any major. What are the advantages of getting a BSBA degree or a BSBA and an MBA instead of just an MBA? Also I'm thinking if I don't do business now, I'll do computer science, and I think this combination - a computer science degree and an MBA, will be really good when I'm looking to start a career. Do you agree? Or should I do business now, since I already sorta started? Another thing is that I don't know if I'll be very good at computer science.. I enjoy working on the computer and figuring out how to do different stuff, like right now I'm talking a class in Excel, and it's my favorite class this quarter, but when it starts to get all technical and when I have to learn a bunch of programming languages, I don't know if I'll be able to do it. Like right now I'm looking at the course description of a computer science class, and it says, "Templates for generalization and decoupling, container components; component-based software from implementor's perspective; data representation using layering and using pointers", and I don't know what any of that means. But when I look at the course descriptions of some other random classes, like literature or comparative studies, some of them sound so much more interesting. There are some other majors that I'm interested in, but I never considered them seriously because I don't think any of them guarantee a financially secure future. And besides most of them are just hobbies, things I enjoy doing, and I don't think I need to do a whole major to continue to enjoy something. But on the other hand I feel like I'm only looking at business and computer science because of the salary potential of the possible careers in these fields, instead of looking at things I really want to do. I know it has to be my choice in the end but what do you think I should do?I can't do both majors in 4 years, or at least that's what my advisor told me. But I'll definitely be doing at least a business minor, because I've already started the required courses. And also, my school is AACSB-accredited. more

Voting Question: Do I have to pay taxes?

I'm a stay at home mom and my husband is a software engineer. He owns his own business and pays up to 60k in tax annually. My 11 yr old son and I make some extra cash selling video games online. It was his idea and he does most of the work. I just help. We don't have a registered company yet. Annual income from this would be 20k, profit would be 10k. Most of this is recorded in my son's bank account. Do we have to pay taxes on this? Thanks. more
