Stocks mixed after oil passes $130, inventories drop

High energy prices have been a source of anxiety for investors, as many retailers, banks and credit card companies have noticed consumers paring back spending on discretionary items, including clothing and jewelry, to buy necessities such as gasoline and groceries, which have been soaring in price.

Wall Street was also hesitant as it awaited minutes from the Federal Reserve's April 29-30 meeting, which should provide more insight into whether policymakers regard rising energy prices as a serious threat. The Fed cut its benchmark federal funds rate by a quarter-percentage point to 2 percent at that meeting, marking the seventh cut in an easing cycle that started in September. Its accompanying economic statement left open the possibility of an end to rate cuts.

In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average slipped 36.72, or 0.29 percent, to 12,791.96, after rising in earlier trading. more

Credit Suisse opens wealth management business in India

Credit Suisse, which kicked off its wealth management business on Thursday says it is banking on its long term potential to drive the business although some would argue that it is a move coming too late in an already crowded market.

But Credit Suisse says it has done the homework and the business is a lucrative one. They estimate that households with bankable assets of over $1 million will rise from 120,000 today to 300,000 by 2012, thus taking the total bankable assets in India to more than $1 trillion.

Experts believe that a lot of this will get channeled into savings and then investments.

As the company launches the new business, Credit Suisse will also have to deal with headwinds from the volatile equity environment.

The Sensex is among the worst performing Asian markets so far this year and that could hurt businesses linked to equities. more

AIRLINE CONSOLIDATION STALLS, BUT STOCKS SURGE The leverage to jetfuel prices trumps the airline industry's plans to consolidate itself out of its problem-plagued fundamentals as surely as an inside straight beats a pair of dueces. The New York Times reported that US Airways (LCC) and the United Airlines operation of UAL (UAUA) broke off talks over a tie-up, unable to surmount the challenges represented by their respective labor forces. Consolidation had been expected to be one of the salves for the scalded industry. The failure to execute on what seemed like so obvious a step ordinarily would represent a drag on the stock. Not so Wednesday. With energy prices ticking back to the levels they were at going all the way back to the beginning of last week, investors are grabbing up airline stocks with both fists. more

Resolved Question: Do I have a chance at becoming a hustler?

I'm in high school right now and I'm located in a country(was U.S.A, right now... in continent of asia) which I suppose has a very bright future, since I was a kid , It was my dream to always end up in a high flying blue collar job somewhere up in Wall Street and slowly become a partner of big firms, but I have so many ambitions, but my wall street dreams deviated once I moved to the land of the software people, I have so much on my mind, I'm currently taking the Business and Commerce stream in my high school and most of my classes are cakewalks for me, I used to flunk half the time in tenth with science and math, I still have math but I mean the Business Studies textbook and Economics textbooks come to me naturally, I dont even have to study for tests and I can ace them, I savour every bit of these books... I'm not an einstein at math so acing the SAT test and landing in some Ivy league is not my priority, it is to me, still a dream. But one great thing I got going for myself right now , sorry if I sound like an oppertunist(hey, told ya I wanted to be a hustler), but right now, I go to one of the most prestigious schools in my city and I have politician's sons as my friends, and construction baron descendants sitting behind my chair, I mean, I know people to can make things happen with a clap. When I get back to the states, I plan to go to a decent B-School and bachelor in accounting, as that is the blood of all forms of business and it would help me become business literate, and then I plan to major in Finance....after that, I plan to become an ERP consultant in case any of my plans dont work as I obviously need a back-up strategy, I will later use the initial salary earned for my ambitions should anything go haywire.....but if the wind is right, I plan to use some of my "connections"(trust me, not petty people, close people too) as my venture capitalists, to start my own soft-drink company, and after a few years, I plan start a construction/real estate company (like TRUMP)and take both of my companies public, eventually I also would like to fullfill my dreams of starting an electric automobile company along with a Insurance company. My dad(who was a small time restuarant owner), has a little idea about my plans, as I told him, but I didn't exactly give him the blueprint I gave you guys even though I think he has an Idea. All I want to know is am I being too overconfident or am I correct about my timing? I consider my self very fortunate to have the right things happen to me so far, its like everything is lined up for me, all I got to do is shoot. I know exactly how hard it is to fulfill dreams, everybody has dreams, only some fulfill it. My mom say isn't exactly pessimistic but she knows me and my network, and I dont think the chances I have aren't something I'm overmining, am I? Let's think about it, sons of politicians, sons of barons as my friends, potential backers, dreams of mine...they can pay for. See, I dont want to act overconfidant and start crying if any of these visions actually get nowhere, but I'm a person who believes in vision, and I wouldn't even rely on just my contacts to get me anywhere, but I can trick a person into buying their own shoes.....Plus I have great managerial skills.... So I'm being optimistic. Is everything in my favour? more

Resolved Question: How much should I honestly be making at this job?

I work as the only on staff IT worker in a business that holds about 15 employees. I consider myself a hybrid, in the sense that I fill both a Database Administrator and System Analyst position at once, but feel I am strongly underpaid. Since I'm the only one with technical knowledge in the business, there is no one knowledgeable enough to really evaluate what I do and how much I should really be getting paid. I plan to take these answers to my evaluation in a couple days to hopefully make some changes. Here is what I do (that I can think of off the top of my head): Design and implement data structure for all applications and programs. Create queries to retrieve data as needed. Design and implement user interface. Create system documentation. Write stored procedures for SQL Server Creates backup procedure and physically backs up necessary data. Evaluates hardware/software needs for business, makes purchases, keeps inventory. Fixes/manages printers/copiers, refills toner cartridges to save money. Assists users in functionality. Buys new computer systems based on needs of user and their position. Manages wireless/land-line bills, manages changes of circumstances (i.e. someone leaving the country, etc.) Negotiates refunds on usage charges. Languages I use: SQL, VB, C/C++, Java Current Salary: $44,000 (No medical, dental, or vision coverage. No tuition reimbursement. 10 Vacation days/year starting after 1 year of working) Is this fair? If not, what should I be making? Thank you for your help.Oh yes, it's also a 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. job, Monday - Friday, no breaks, 30 minute lunch each day. more

Resolved Question: COLLEGE DROUPOUTS........ . STAR IT IF U LIKE?

College Drop Outs: -------------------------------- Are college dropouts more successful than people with good education? It would seem so if you consider that many billionaires are people who dumped college. However, what this hides is the fact that although millions quit studies before completing them, very few of them go on to become rich. What the list of the super-rich dropouts signifies is that in business, a top degree is not as important as having the right aptitude, attitude, determination and vision. Here are some dropouts who went on to become billionaires: 1. Bill Gates & William Henry Gates III (1955-), along with Paul Allen, co-founded Microsoft Corporation, the world's largest software maker. Bill Gates, the wealthiest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $480 crores (Rs 211,200 crore!), is probably the best-known college dropout. Gates attended an exclusive prep school in Seattle, went on to study at Harvard University, then dropped out to pursue software development. As students in the mid-70s, he and Paul Allen wrote the original Altair BASIC interpreter for the Altair 8800, the first commercially successful PC. In 1975, Micro-Soft - later Microsoft Corporation - was born. Three decades on, Gates has been Number One on the Forbes 400 for over a dozen years. 2. Lawrence Joseph Ellison (1944-) , co-founder and CEO of Oracle Corporation, founded his company in 1977 with a sum of $2,000. Once a school dropout, he is now, according to Forbes , one of the richest people in America with a net worth of around $184 crores. The figure also makes him the ninth richest in the world. 3. Dhirubhai Ambani----(1932-2002) was born into the family of a schoolteacher. It was a family of modest means. When he turned 16, Dhirubhai moved to Aden, working first as a gas-station attendant, then as a clerk in an oil company. He returned to India at 26, starting a business with a meagre capital of $375. By the time of his demise, his company - Reliance Industries Ltd - had grown to become an empire, with an estimated annual turnover of $120 crores! Dhirubhai was, in his lifetime, conferred the Indian Entrepreneur of the 20th Century Award by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. A Times of India poll in the year 2000 also voted him one of the biggest creators of wealth in this century. 4. Steve Jobs Steven Paul Jobs (1955-) and Apple Computer are names that have long gone together. Born in the United States to an unknown Egyptian-Arab father, Jobs was adopted soon after birth. After graduating high school, he enrolled in Reed College, dropping out after one semester. In 1976, 21-year-old Jobs and 26-year old Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computer Co. in the family garage. Jobs revolutionised the industry by popularising the concept of home computers. By 1984, the Macintosh was introduced. He had an influential role in the building of the World-Wide Web, and also happens to be Chairman and CEO of Pixar Animation Studios. ================================================== MORAL OF THE STORY:- we have wasted our time more

Resolved Question: Can I dissolve my corporation, which I own 55 per cent of, then use the intellectual property to start again.?

So I am 1 of 2 founders. I own 55 per cent. There is substantial intellectual property in the form of procedures, websites and software. My partner wants out. Buying him out will put me at a cash-flow disadvantage. He doesn't want the business, nor could he run it himself - although, if he hired someone as smart as me he could. The business is my vision and expertise. He was sales and business operations. My question relates to the dissolution of the corporation with two scenario's in mind. 1. If we sell all assets, pay all debts and walk away, can I use any of the documentation to build my new company with the same vision. 2. If he buys me out (we have a shotgun clause), would I have to re-create all these documents from scratch or can I use them in any way? Are these subject to negotiation? ThanksIn response to the first answer... Well yes the intellectual property could have value and be sold to whomever, but not all of it will have value to most people, but would to me. Consider if we sold the desk, lamp, computers, etc... when dissolving the corp. Who would buy the sales call scripts... Probably no one, but I could sure use them again. Or what about diagrams that document the sales cycle or project development systems? more

Resolved Question: Computer Repair Business?

Due to a disability I have with my vision I won't be making house calls. But, my question is, an A+ certification really worth all the trouble, if I plan in working soley out of my house only, and will not do house calls, but will do maybe remote connections? I don't plan on working for anyone, because at my high school I gained a lot of knowledge in my Info Tech class, so I do have experience if you will. I'm not the greatest at doing the whole command script thing with DOS, etc or editing code, but with trouble shooting software, etc it'd be no problem for me. I'm pretty good at fixing computers and knowing some top knotch software used to get rid of spyware, etc.I was also thinking of going to school and getting a degree in Information Technology. So, I was wondering if that would be "good enough" if you will, even though these days new software, new hardware, etc is being developed, so it's good to gain more knowledge, etc. more

Dear Doctors ( not Ophthalmologists only), WHAT ARE YOUR NEEDS? What would you like to have in your practice that would make your job easier and enhance your performance in terms of means of operation? Is there ANYTHING that you use almost every day and think to yourselves:" It is year 2006, there has to be SOMETHING better that this ... thing" ? Please, help.
