Marketing: Barbi Hull brings your business photos to life

She has an amazing ability to turn what could be a standard, boring business photo you forget in a blink into an image that lingers in your mind.

2. She's hard-working. From the minute she arrives on a job, her camera is constantly clicking. She does it in a way where you almost forget she's there doing her thing. She over delivers on high-quality photos every time.

3. She's fun. Barbie is smart, spunky, extremely professional, and always wearing a stunning smile!

Here's one of the snaps she took while I was hanging out at Microsoft's Office Live event for women entrepreneurs. More to come!

Biz Buzz: Jobless Claims Dip, UBS Raises Capital, and Other

Last week's jobless claims were at the lowest level in a month, the Labor Department reported today. The number of newly laid-off workers filing for unemployment benefits fell by over 9,000, to 365,000. That brought the four-week average of jobless claims to 372,250, which is still up from a year ago, when jobless claims were around 300,000. This also marks the fourth straight week when the total number of workers using unemployment benefits numbered above 3 million. Michigan, North Carolina, and Georgia saw some of the biggest increases in claims, while New York had the largest drop.

Jim Pethokoukis wrote earlier this month about how the economy continues to defy negative predictions.

Open Question: Whats the best tax software for a business?

I recently received my accounting degree and i have been working for a tax business for awhile now and I finally have enough cash built up to start my own tax office, I was wondering if anyone knew of some good tax soft wares that I could use for my business, most of the ones i have been looking at on the internet are basically just if you want to do your own taxes, they do not seem like they are designed for a business and im having trouble finding any, also, once I have a software i need to get set up with a bank to do RAL loans so i can get clients their money fast, a good friend of mine said that there are tax softwares you can purchase that are already set up with banks to do the tax loans but i cant find anything like that on the internet, any suggestions?????? more

Open Question: Tax Definition of a Business?

I'm trying to decide if my business ventures would be considered a valid business in terms of tax deductions. I design and build web applications, not for other people, but with the hopes that people will use them and they will become popular, hence, bringing in revenue down the road. An example would be if someone was building the next Facebook before it became popular and started making money. Doing this comes at a cost...I have to pay for the computers to do the work, the software to do the work, the online hosting providers that host the applications, fees for domain name registration...not to mention the home office costs. In my mind, this is legitimate business that costs me money, it just isn't profitable yet, and I have no way to predict when it will be profitable. Is this a viable business for tax purposes? I plan to file for LLC and get appropriate local business licenses before I claim any expenses. Thanks in advance! These are not startup costs...these costs are associated with the maintenance of live applications being used by the public. A site might not realize it's potential and gain popularity for several years, but that does not mean the business running the site is in "startup" mode per-say. more

Open Question: Successful careers and living quality?

My parents and family are under the impression that only people in a business career, medical career, or technology career can't have successful futures (by successful, they mean have enough income to live on). I believe that people that don't work as lawyers, therapists, doctors, nurses, accountants, bankers, financial analysts, software designers, engineers, chemists, and related professions can still be successful. Landscapers, fashion, designers, self-employed individuals (without a 4 year degree in a business major), florists, hotel workers, and other professions can still live a successful life just as much as people Mentioned above, can't they? How many people agree that there are other professions besides [military, teaching, science, financial, accounting, engineering, legal/law, and medical careers] that can lead to monetary success and a good life (as in not being poor and living pay-check to pay-check]?I am not asking about the ones I'm not interested in pursuing. I am asking about the ones like florists, fashion designers, landscapers, hotel workers, etc. Can't they also have successful lifestyles? more

Open Question: Web hosting companies & creating an online store?

I have currently built my own website with Yahoo Small Business and the software is Sitebuilder. I pay for the Yahoo Website Hosting Pckage which is $12.95 a month. I reguarly sell products through my website. However, it does not allow you to operate an online store and have a shopping cart unless you upgrade to the Merchant Solutions Plan which is $39.95 plus a $50 set up fee! This seems rather expensive, just to allow my customers to order different things in the same transaction. At the moment they can just purchase 1 item through PayPal on my site but I would really like to enable them to buy several things and have the option to view them in their shopping cart. Can anyone recommend any reasonable priced web hosting companies online that will allow me to do this and also build my own website from scratch - I dont want a template to work from. more

Open Question: I think my cell phone is bugged, what do I do?

ok the first paragraph is just kinda backround info to clear up the story, the second paragraph is the actual story. thanks =) Well I'm 14 and I have very... how do I say.. up-tight (??) parents. my mom isn't as bad as my step dad, but my mom does ask what i'm doing on the computer, who i'm texting, what i'm talking about, who i am friends with, and just she seems to kind of be in my business. of course it's ok, because i don't think she goes through my phone laptop etc, even if she did there's nothing being hidden except some bad language lol but then my step dad on the other hand.. oh lord.. he is so obsessed with the internet. and I mean he has passwords to EVERYTHING on the family computer, and i can't be on that thing without it saying i don't have permission. i told my dad about how hectic it is at my house with the internet and stuff, and he bought me my own laptop and told me never to give it to them and to have a password that no one could ever guess, on it. but ANYWAY (sorry i'm getting off track)::::::::; my phone lights up randomly, and the screen will just stay on. sometimes it will make a weird sound when i'm talking on it, and a lot of times the screen acts weird, like this little white bar flashes real quick in the bottom right corner, which happens on my laptop too -_- (i think they are both bugged -sigh-) What do I do? I have a BlackBerry Curve 8330 (Sprint) and it is only a few months old. getting a new one is out of the question. i don't have the money, and i love this phone. i have a password on it when its not in my pocket, so i don't think there is any way they could've put software on it. but anyway, what do i do? is it bugged or did my up tight mom and stepdad make me believe it is even though its not??!?!!? thanks!! more

Open Question: Would other state universities accept my credits?

I went to Devry and got a Bachelor's of science engineering degree. The engineering degrees from Devry here in Atlanta are actually ABET accredited. I can't speak too much for the business degrees but I've heard business graduate nightmare stories about not being able to get a job or transfer credits I've heard a lot that "for profit" schools do not look too good on paper but we've had students here get software engineering positions at Lockheed Martin, Phillips, GE (I got hired here recently), and many other great companies. I don't think the quality of the education is bad at all, just over priced. To me it comes down to the individual and not the paper because I've known graduates from FSU who still work in restaurants because they didn't know how to apply themselves. My concern is that I want to pursue other engineering degrees at other universities like Georgia Tech. Will state universities accept the credits from Devry? I understand a school like Georgia Tech turning me down since they are near top of the nation when it comes to engineering but what about other state universities that aren't at the very top but are still very respected? more

Resolved Question: Did anything like this take place on Collins project ?

<Backlash: Women Bullying Women at Work Katherine Streeter By MICKEY MEECE Published: May 9, 2009 YELLING, scheming and sabotaging: all are tell-tale signs that a bully is at work, laying traps for employees at every pass. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image Peter DaSilva for The New York Times Kent Kaufman and Laura Stek, right, of the Growth and Leadership Center, coach Cleo Lepori-Costello, left, a vice president at a Silicon Valley software company, on communication skills. During this downturn, as stress levels rise, workplace researchers say, bullies are likely to sharpen their elbows and ratchet up their attacks. Its probably no surprise that most of these bullies are men, as a survey by the Workplace Bullying Institute, an advocacy group, makes clear. But a good 40 percent of bullies are women. And at least the male bullies take an egalitarian approach, mowing down men and women pretty much in equal measure. The women appear to prefer their own kind, choosing other women as targets more than 70 percent of the time. In the name of Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem, what is going on here? Just the mention of women treating other women badly on the job seemingly shakes the womens movement to its core. It is what Peggy Klaus, an executive coach in Berkeley, Calif., has called the pink elephant in the room. How can women break through the glass ceiling if they are ducking verbal blows from other women in cubicles, hallways and conference rooms? Women dont like to talk about it because it is so antithetical to the way that we are supposed to behave to other women, Ms. Klaus said. We are supposed to be the nurturers and the supporters. Ask women about run-ins with other women at work and some will point out that people of both sexes can misbehave. Others will nod in instant recognition and recount examples of how women more so than men have mistreated them. Ive been sabotaged so many times in the workplace by other women, I finally left the corporate world and started my own business, said Roxy Westphal, who runs the promotional products company Roxy Ventures Inc. in Scottsdale, Ariz. She still recalls the sting of an interview she had with a woman 30 years ago that turned into a one-person firing squad and led her to leave the building in tears. Jean Kondek, who recently retired after a 30-year career in advertising, recalled her anger when an administrator in a small agency called a meeting to dress her down in front of co-workers for not following agency procedure in a client emergency. But Ms. Kondek said she had the last word. I said, Would everyone please leave? She added, and then I told her, This is not how you handle that. Many women who are still in the work force were hesitant to speak out publicly for fear of making matters worse or of jeopardizing their careers. A private accountant in California said she recently joined a company and was immediately frozen out by two women working there. One even pushed her in the cafeteria during an argument, the accountant said. Its as if were back in high school, she said. A senior executive said she had finally broken the glass ceiling only to have another woman gun for her job by telling management, I cant work for her, shes passive-aggressive. The strategy worked: The executive said she soon lost the job to her accuser. ONE reason women choose other women as targets is probably some idea that they can find a less confrontative person or someone less likely to respond to aggression with aggression, said Gary Namie, research director for the Workplace Bullying Institute, which ordered the study in 2007. But another dynamic may be at work. After five decades of striving for equality, women make up more than 50 percent of management, professional and related occupations, says Catalyst, the nonprofit research group. And yet, its 2008 census found, only 15.7 percent of Fortune 500 officers and 15.2 percent of directors were women. Leadership specialists wonder, are women being overly aggressive because there are too few opportunities for advancement? Or is it stereotyping and women are only perceived as being overly aggressive? Is there a double standard at work? Research on gender stereotyping from Catalyst suggests that no matter how women choose to lead, they are perceived as never just right. Whats more, the group found, women must work twice as hard as men to achieve the same level of recognition and prove they can lead. If women business leaders act consistent with gender stereotypes, they are considered too soft, the group found in a 2007 study. If they go against gender stereotypes, they are considered too tough. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image David Kadlubowski for The New York Times Michelle Cirocco, left, and Donna Kent of Televerde, a company in Phoenixthat set up call centers at a state prison. Women are trying to figure out the magical keys to the kingdom, said Laura Steck, president of the Growth and Leadership Center in Sunnyvale, Calif., and an executive leadership coach. Women feel they have to be aggressive to be promoted, she said, and then they keep it up. Then, suddenly, they see the need to be collegial and collaborative instead of competitive. Cleo Lepori-Costello, a vice president at a Silicon Valley software company, came to the center for training. She got off to a bumpy start when she stormed into her new role like a bull in a china shop, Ms. Steck said. In gathering feedback about Ms. Lepori-Costello, Ms. Steck heard comments like: Cleo is good at getting things done but may have come on too strong in the beginning. She didnt read the different cultural unspoken rules like she could have. So Ms. Steck and Kent Kaufman, another coach at the center, began a one-year, once-a-weekindividual coaching program. It included role-playing and monthly group discussions with other female executives who acknowledged that they also had major blind spots about being politic at work. (The group was once nicknamed the Bully Broads.) When she came to the center, Ms. Lepori-Costello said, she thought her colleagues were not initially open to her ideas. Through coaching and conflict role-playing, she came to realize that her behavior was perhaps too much overkill and that she was not always attending to all the people around her. Joel H. Neuman, a researcher at the State University of New York at New Paltz, says most aggressive behavior at work is influenced by a number of factors associated with the bullies, victims and the situations in which they work. This would include issues related to frustration, personality traits, perceptions of unfair treatment, and an assortment of stresses and strains associated with todays leaner and meaner work settings,, he said. Mr. Neuman and his colleague Loraleigh Keashly of Wayne State University have developed a questionnaire to identify the full range of behaviors that can constitute bullying, which could help companies uncover problems that largely go unreported. Bullying involves verbal or psychological forms of aggressive (hostile) behavior that persists for six months or longer. Their 29 questions include: Over the last 12 months, have you regularly: been glared at in a hostile manner, been given the silent treatment, been treated in a rude or disrespectful manner, or had others fail to deny false rumors about you? The Workplace Bullying Institute says that 37 percent of workers have been bullied. Yet many employers ignore the problem, which hits the bottom line in turnover, health care and productivity costs, the institute says. Litigation is rare, the institute says, because there is no directly applicable law to cite and the costs are high. Two Canadianresearchers recently set out to examine the bullying that pits women against women. They found that some women may sabotage one another because they feel that helping their female co-workers could jeopardize their own careers. One of the researchers, Grace Lau, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Waterloo, said the goal was to encourage women to help one another. She said: How? One way we predicted would be to remind women that they are members of the same group. We believe that a sense of pride in womens accomplishments is important in getting women to help one another, Ms. Lau said. To have this sense of pride, women need to be aware of their shared identity as women. In the workplace, however, it is unlikely that women will constantly think of themselves as members of one group, she said. They will more likely see themselves as individuals, as they are judged by their performance. As a result, women may not feel a need to help one another,, she said. They may even feel that in order to get ahead, they need to bully their co-workers by withholding information like promotion opportunities, and that women are easier to bully than men because women are supposedly less tough than men. Skip to next paragraph WHAT better place to be a bully than in a prison? Even so, that is exactly where Televerde, a company in Phoenix that specializes in generating sales leads and market insight for high-tech companies, set up shop. About 13 years ago, the company created four call centers in the Arizona state prison in Perryville, employing 250 inmates (out of 3,000). Through immersion training, mentoring and working with real-world clients, these women can overcome their difficult circumstances, said Donna Kent, senior vice president at Televerde. Often, they will win over bullies and we see the whole thing transform. Thats what gives us inspiration and our clients inspiration. TODAY, about half of Televerdescorporate office is made up of graduates from Perryville, including Michelle Cirocco, the director of sales operations. She has seen how women treat one another in other settings and she thinks the root cause is that women are taught to fight with one another for attention at an early age. Were competing with our sisters for dads attention, or for our brothers attention, Ms. Cirocco said. And then we go on in school and were competing for our teachers attention. Were competing to be on the sports team or the cheer squad. To be sure, the Televerde experience is not for every inmate, and those who are in it still must work hard to maintain a highly competitive position. As we get into the corporate world, Ms. Cirocco added, were taught or were led to believe that we dont get ahead because of men. But, we really dont get ahead because of ourselves. Instead of building each other up and showcasing each other, were constantly tearing each other down.Televerde reversed that attitude in Perryville, Ms. Cirocco said, by encouraging women to work for a common cause, much like the environment envisioned by the Canadian researchers. It becomes a very nurturing environment, Ms. Cirocco said. You have all these women who become your friends, and you are personally invested in their success. Everyone wants everyone to get out, to go on to have a good healthy life. If the level of support found at Televerde were found elsewhere, Ms. Klaus said, it would solve a lot of problems. The time has come, she said, for us to really deal with this relationship that women have to women, because it truly is preventing us from being as successful in the workplace as we want to be and should be. Weve got enough obstacles; we dont need to pile on any more. >To gameface, Thanks. Terrific. more

Voting Question: I have good news everyone! The xbox 360 outsold the Wii and the PS3 is still lagging in 3rd place YAYYY!!!?

http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/703176/NPD-Hardware-Software-Sales-Numbers-For-February-2010.html Its just so amazing to see that the playstation brad is no longer relevant and now the term xbox is an umbrella term to mean "video games". I remember when the head of sony said that they could ship the PS3 with no games and it would still outsell the xbox. Well that's what they get for under estimating their competition. . . .which is stupid since their competition was microsoft. And by the time Natal comes out, sony will be so far behind they will have to leave the console business. YAYYY!!!! more

Voting Question: Best way to edit scanned documents?

Hi, what is the best way to edit/re-design business forms that I have scanned? I will only receive hard copies of these forms so I can only scan them and redesign them, but how can I change a phone number on the form, add verbiage, etc? I'm looking for an easy to use software, heard about omnipage & adobe pro, but will this be what I need? Or would it be better to have a software program where I would essentially start from scratch, designing the form and saving it as a new file so I can make all the changes I want? What software (that is easy to use, not like adobe illustrator), would be best? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Non-India vendor sells software license to India business. Is it subject to TDS? If so, why?

I would think if TDS was taken on a Non-India vendor, that would infer the Non-India vendor must file an India tax return to get any portion of their money back, if they are not otherwise required to file India income taxes (no Nexus). more

Resolved Question: Can you help me pick a laptop?

I want to start thinking about my next laptop. I have a Dell XPS M1535 and I really don't love it. I'm not a gamer, but I have many memory-intensive apps open at the same time. If the system would allow it I would have Adobe PS, Illustrator, Flash and Dreamweaver all open along with Firefox, which has terrible memory leaks if you use any plugins. Between all this I need a decent processor and a lot of memory. Macs would be great in theory but are out of the question because of the lack of software. The i5, i7 processors look appealing but they are so new, I don't know if they run hot and/or have other drawbacks, and I'm tempted to wait for the next generation of i7s. Given this usage pattern would you say I should look for a gaming computer? I don't seem to fall in the normal classes (business user, gamer), so often not sure what to look for. There's a new Sony VAIO with an i7 processor that looks kind of appealing. Well, any lines or model suggestions appreciated. Last few times I just bought a laptop without much thought, and this time I want to do better.I have 4gb of memory now, and it's not nearly enough, so I guess I didn't explain my needs very well. Oh well! more

Resolved Question: collect unemployment benefits while trying to start a consulting business?

I'm a software engineer in California collecting unemployment insurance. In addition to looking for a full-time job, I'm also trying to start a software consulting business. I'm buying business cards, building a website and portfolio of my work, meeting with prospective clients, etc. I haven't gotten any consulting clients yet but I'm trying hard. I have two related questions: first: does trying to start a consulting business disqualify me from receiving unemployment benefits, even if I haven't earned any money (yet!) from my consulting work? Second: if I'm not successful in getting paid consulting clients by the end of the year, can I deduct expenses I incurred starting up my consulting business as losses on Schedule C? Or will that raise too many eyebrows given that I collected unemployment benefits for most of the year? My unemployment benefits are larger than the tax benefit of Schedule C losses, so if I have to choose I won't deduct my Schedule C losses. But I'd prefer not to have to choose! :-) more

Resolved Question: Microsoft license check?

I have a business with multiple laptops and desktops and multiple disks for Microsoft Office. I am trying to figure out which disk/license goes to which computer. How can I check which license is used for the software on a given computer? Is it under "Properties" or something? Also, am I allowed to have one license to cover the program on my desktop and my laptop, or do I need a separate license for each? Thanks! So I found the licensing under "about". That was a nice quick answer. Anyone know about the other questions?AAAHH, so the "about" section gave me a Product ID not the Key so How can I compair those two numbers? The "about" reference really did me no good as it gave me no number to check against the box! Still need lots of help! more

Voting Question: Help with Small business taxes?

I'm using Quicktax Online Edition to do my small business taxes. It's a videography business, and I wanted to deduct the equipment that I purchased - video camera, tripod, editing software, and smaller equipment. Is there a way to write these things off as an expense and not have to put them down as fixed assets that you only get depreciation costs for over the course of multiple years? I bought some of the equipment used, so some of it only cost like $25, so it seems weird that the software is implying that I have to put down $25 as fixed assets that I dont' get a regular deduction for. The only thing I bought that costs over $200 is the video camera which was around $900. So, can I put down the equipment, software, and some office furniture that all cost under $200 (Most under $80) as expenses. If I can't put the video camera down as a regular expense, how can I get the most back this year. I'm doing my 2008 taxes, and had to upgrade to a high definition camera in 2009, so I barely use this camera anymore anyway. Please help. It would be great if you have experience with Quicktax Online Edition. I just tried entering the items as fixed assets, and it didn't seem to give me any refund for this year. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to write anything in the UCC spaces next to the amounts.Just to clarify I'm Canadian (BC) so I'm looking for someone who knows Canadian taxes. more

Resolved Question: Should I get a second Bachelor's or a Master's?

I have a Bachelor's in Business from 1998. I went back to school and got an Associates in Computer Information Systems in 2009. Upon graduation I got hired in the software department as an Engineer for a government contractor. Great job and benefits. However to move up the ladder and apply for promotions I have to have an Engineering or Comp Science 4 year degree. I found a Master's degree in Computer Science but am worried I will be in over my head. I also found a program in Information Technology that will take my undergrad credits and allow me to get another Bachelor's degree in 10 classes. Money is not the issue as I have tuition reimbursement...however, it would be an issue if in my Master's I do struggle and don't get at least a B. Any help would greatly be appreciated. more
