Bite-size business development

AS FAR AS it goes, the Patrick administration's "growth zones" initiative is a helpful step toward easier business development.

Even when a business wants to locate in Massachusetts, the rap goes, getting all the local and state approvals needed to build anything takes Job-like patience. But administrative improvements and changes in state laws have cut down on delays, according to Greg Bialecki, Governor Patrick's undersecretary of business development.

What still takes time are technical analysis and public vetting - vital steps that shouldn't be short-circuited for development's sake alone. Bialecki rightly argues that the best way to speed up that process is to get it done in advance. Hence the state's new growth zones, which the administration has been unveiling in recent weeks. more

Business club offers glimpse of Meiji legacy

I had the pleasure of speaking to a gathering of business leaders in Kitakyushu last week. The venue was a historic building that was once the residence of a leading figure in the Japanese business world, Kenjiro Matsumoto. The building now functions as a facility for the Industry Club of West Japan, a society of the area's top businesspeople.

Matsumoto was a financial magnate who lived during the Meiji era (1868-1912) and the Showa era (1926-1989). Born into a wealthy family in 1870, Matsumoto went to the United States to study economics at a university in Pennsylvania. After returning to Kitakyushu, he joined the family coal business, eventually expanding it into the textile, electronic appliance, steelmaking and ceramic industries. In 1907, Matsumoto and his father established a private institute, Meiji College of Technology in Kitakyushu, which has since grown into what is now called Kyushu Institute of Technology. more

I have started a computer repair business, and have been purchasing all the relevant software, I have Windows 98, XP (Home & Pro), Vista (BUSINESS - For all versions of Vista), is there such a thing for Windows 7, where i only need to buy one copy which will do Premium, Professional, Ultimate etc. Or do i need to purchase each version, which would cost astronomical amounts of money, in comparison to how much i have spent on the rest of the software, as Vista Business only cost £25, but i cannot seem to find the same for Windows 7.. more

I plan on purchasing Quickbooks for my accounting purposes, since i've learned that this is the #1 accounting software for small businesses in the USA. But what other software would you recommend? I see a number of businesses use Quicken, but is it necessary? Does it help with organizing finances? If I had Quickbooks, would Quicken just be an added benefit? I'm a sole-proprietor and a massage therapist, so I would be classified as a small service business. I don't have any inventory I'm selling or anything other than my services as a therapist. I'm looking to go into an engineering field, more specifically, Computer/Software engineering, and getting a PhD. I know an engineering degree pays well in the business world, but how much would I get if I decided to go into education instead? Also, for anyone who's experienced in this subject, what classes should I take besides my major? I'm assuming a good amount of english and perhaps a few education classes. I've heard that the average for a professor in general is ~$100k. Ok. I'll be using this primarily for a home business. At any one time: I run up to 10 internet windows/tabs at a time, a software program (database), PDF files open in Adobe and a Chat Software running online. I want the best one for my needs. I don't want to spend more than I have to, because I can use the money elsewhere. BUT, I want something that I can use for a few years without it getting too outdated. (see: slow) Thanks for your input. I don't know if the GHz is more important or the number of cores. I've been told that most things don't even use the extra two in the quad core and that it is a waste of money. I don't know what to do. Dual core or quad core? Resolved Question: I don't know if I should stay with him?

I have been in this relationship for six years, three of it married. When I met him, he was going through a bankruptcy for a dot com he had started after he left a mid level position at a software company. We lived in a little town at this point in time where the economy was not very vibrant and we made a fine living there, but only in comparison to the economics of scale. Both frustrated with what life had to offer us there, we moved half way across the country to a town of 70,000 people. He continued with the small business he had started and tried to make it grow - mostly with money borrowed on my credit cards. He racked up $13,000 worth of debt on a credit card of mine that I didn't even know that he was using. I was called by the credit card company because it had gone over limit with no payment. This was many years ago, and of course I was livid. But not livid enough to leave. I stayed and supported him in this business of his that has never turned a dime. I thought that he had finally come to terms with the notion that he saw that he was toiling away 60-70 hours a week at a business that was not worth it, but his ego has the best of him and he cannot see that it is never going to be a viable business. He keeps working on new ideas, going to venture capital conferences, etc to keep this thing alive - but in reality I support him. He makes less than a gas station attendant although he has an mechanical engineering degree and is a database website developer. It has been six years. I went $45,000 in consumer debt to finance this business. I make about $65,000 a year and can pay my bills without him, including the debt payments. (Although, if divorced I would hope that there could be some sort of payment plan, although I don't count on it since he hasn't been able to make payments on that debt while we are married.) The house is in my name because his credit was bad and I typically make the mortgage payment myself. The complicated thing is that I love this guy. We think on the same level, we both enjoy the same things. We are avid whitewater kayakers, back country skiers, and mountain bikers. He is funny and charming and I love spending time with him. But I have lost my patience concerning our finances, as I see that he is a bit of a lunatic in the belief of this business of his. The question is, do I leave or stay? I am leaning towards leaving as the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and to expect different results and I keep expecting him to change - and I don't think he can. Any thoughts on this matter? more

Microsoft Office Syndrome is where a particular has far too many versions of 1 piece of software, Eg: Vista has Home Basic, Home Premium, ultimate, Business and an Unknown other version. By comparison, Mac OS' have only 1 versionMicrosoft do not make lots of versions of things to give people more choices, they do it to try and trick people. Eg, someone buys vista home premium, and sees that it does not have a feature they want, they see that the feature they want is in Vista Ultimate, they buy it and in doing so, they pays twice to the same operating system. more

Hey, Im buying my first smartphone very shorty (once i know what to get). I am buying a Treo for Verizon. For cost reasons itl be a 700...either Palm OS or WindowsMobile 6 I wanted to know the comparisons between Palm and Windows. Iv used the $99 Palm Handhelds before and it was very easy to use so i have a small idea of Palms OS. Iv also used the Windows Treo at a verizon shop for a few minutes. I like the looks (graphics) of Windows more. But other than that i really need some info on the two. Example being....Palm OS is great for getting around your device quickly, and has alot of software avialible like games and such...although Windows has a better ---X--- system and is more advanced. although some features you wont use though.....etc etc This will pretty much be my computer when its not availible. Dysfunctional Conflict: I look at a dysfunctional conflict as a situation in which no solution comes from it. Revamping a business with my fiancée has led to several “dysfunctional conflicts”. His position with the company is general manager and my posisition is office manager. I am more aware of information technology and he is more aware of product selection. With this in mind I can describe a task conflict. In deciding on what point of sale software we should use, I originally took initiative in making a final decision in which he disagreed with. I became extremely upset with him and argued against his choices.
