Gordon Brown must make sweeping changes

That means binning the more expensive tax discs on existing cars, this Autumn's scheduled 2p extra on fuel, identity cards and the illiberal extension without charge detention of terror suspects to 42 days.

And in their place should come a programme to give Labour an edge and people a reason to vote for the party at the general election.

The PM could start with a living wage in excess of £7 an hourtore place the minimum wage, free school meals for every kid, axing of NHS prescription charges in England (copying Wales and Scotland) and abolishing swimming pool charges to let kids can splash about as well as look at fossils in museums without paying entry charges.

Labour's done much to improve people's lives but, as Bolton MP Brian Iddon stated, people feel it's no longer on their side. more

Resolved Question: driverchecker.com employee ! Your customer who paid 39.99 needs help and no help available?

I paid 39.99 for help to fix a blue screen issue on my computer last week and like magic an answer to solve my problem came through when a person said use this software at driverchecker.com for a price of 39.99 and that should help you. Well I surely thought it could help but I never realized it would hurt me in the end. Your product did nothing to fix any problem instead it created more of a problem and the worst problem is that on your website it big bold letters shows the help section will respond to the paying customers within 24 hours. I sent 7 emails within 5 days and no answers. How funny that the yahoo answer to my blue screen question . that driverchecker.com was answered less than 5 minutes after i submitted my ? to the forum . .and now that I need help trying to get support at driverchecker.com all I get is Nothing for the small fee of 39.99. Is this company really in business? My next question is where to report this problem of services advertising in this forum that are obviously not helping or assisting the public on computer problems and have taken my 39.99 and have no way of allowing their paying customers to contact them. How can I find out if this is an internet scam that seems to be a hoax because the product once it's paid for has a menu that does nothing but scan my computer So BLUESCREEN PROBLEMS SHOULD NOT PAY DRIVERCHECKER.COM 39.99 FOR SOMETHING THAT DELIVERS NOTHING AND WILL NOT RESPOND FOR HELP ON THIS PRODUCT. SO BEWARE DRIVERCHECKER.COM SALESMAN WHO POSTED THIS TO HELP ME . YOU GOT ME GOOD FOR SURE. more

Voting Question: to the party saying "no" ......care to look into the mirror?

Why cyberspace isn’t, and will never be, nirvana By Clifford Stoll | NEWSWEEK From the magazine issue dated Feb 27, 1995 After two decades online, I’m perplexed. It’s not that I haven’t had a gas of a good time on the Internet. I’ve met great people and even caught a hacker or two. But today, I’m uneasy about this most trendy and oversold community. Visionaries see a future of telecommuting workers, interactive libraries and multimedia classrooms. They speak of electronic town meetings and virtual communities. Commerce and business will shift from offices and malls to networks and modems. And the freedom of digital networks will make government more democratic. Baloney. Do our computer pundits lack all common sense? The truth in no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works. Consider today’s online world. The Usenet, a worldwide bulletin board, allows anyone to post messages across the nation. Your word gets out, leapfrogging editors and publishers. Every voice can be heard cheaply and instantly. The result? Every voice is heard. The cacophany more closely resembles citizens band radio, complete with handles, harrasment, and anonymous threats. When most everyone shouts, few listen. How about electronic publishing? Try reading a book on disc. At best, it’s an unpleasant chore: the myopic glow of a clunky computer replaces the friendly pages of a book. And you can’t tote that laptop to the beach. Yet Nicholas Negroponte, director of the MIT Media Lab, predicts that we’ll soon buy books and newspapers straight over the Intenet. Uh, sure. What the Internet hucksters won’t tell you is tht the Internet is one big ocean of unedited data, without any pretense of completeness. Lacking editors, reviewers or critics, the Internet has become a wasteland of unfiltered data. You don’t know what to ignore and what’s worth reading. Logged onto the World Wide Web, I hunt for the date of the Battle of Trafalgar. Hundreds of files show up, and it takes 15 minutes to unravel them–one’s a biography written by an eighth grader, the second is a computer game that doesn’t work and the third is an image of a London monument. None answers my question, and my search is periodically interrupted by messages like, “Too many connectios, try again later.” Won’t the Internet be useful in governing? Internet addicts clamor for government reports. But when Andy Spano ran for county executive in Westchester County, N.Y., he put every press release and position paper onto a bulletin board. In that affluent county, with plenty of computer companies, how many voters logged in? Fewer than 30. Not a good omen. Point and click: Then there are those pushing computers into schools. We’re told that multimedia will make schoolwork easy and fun. Students will happily learn from animated characters while taught by expertly tailored software.Who needs teachers when you’ve got computer-aided education? Bah. These expensive toys are difficult to use in classrooms and require extensive teacher training. Sure, kids love videogames–but think of your own experience: can you recall even one educational filmstrip of decades past? I’ll bet you remember the two or three great teachers who made a difference in your life. Then there’s cyberbusiness. We’re promised instant catalog shopping–just point and click for great deals. We’ll order airline tickets over the network, make restaurant reservations and negotiate sales contracts. Stores will become obselete. So how come my local mall does more business in an afternoon than the entire Internet handles in a month? Even if there were a trustworthy way to send money over the Internet–which there isn’t–the network is missing a most essential ingredient of capitalism: salespeople. What’s missing from this electronic wonderland? Human contact. Discount the fawning techno-burble about virtual communities. Computers and networks isolate us from one another. A network chat line is a limp substitute for meeting friends over coffee. No interactive multimedia display comes close to the excitement of a live concert. And who’d prefer cybersex to the real thing? While the Internet beckons brightly, seductively flashing an icon of knowledge-as-power, this nonplace lures us to surrender our time on earth. A poor substitute it is, this virtual reality where frustration is legion and where–in the holy names of Education and Progress–important aspects of human interactions are relentlessly devalued. Resolved Question: Include expenses under Schedule C or Job-Related Expenses?

I teach part-time at a university and I own my own music studio as the sole proprietor. This is the first year my business is up and running. When I went through the H&R Block software and put my income in under Schedule C, it asked me all about my expenses. Because we just got started up, my income was about $1,500 and expenses were $11,500 which made it so that my income for this job is reported as -$10,000. Then later I get to the Job-Related Expenses portion of the Deductions tab and it's asking me many of the same questions that it asked me while I was filling out the Schedule C. Where should these expenses go? What will get me the best return? Some of these expenses are directly of my studio such as paint and utilities. Others are grey as far as where I use them- such as music books, etc. Thank you very much. I love my Yahoo Answers Community.the end of that first paragraph should say (negative) -$10,000 more

Resolved Question: How to write a Business Report? What software is used to create one?

Hi, does anybody know how to write a business report? Are images such as photos allowed? And what type of software is used to create one? But generally is photoshop or a powerpoint presentation okay to include images and written info for a business report>??? thanks!!!! more

Resolved Question: B&F Top Contributors: Is this solicitation?

Someone in business and finance asked "how do I make money online". I gave him an answer on how I do it, and I was reported. I tried to appeal it and they rejected my appeal (twice) and took 20 points from my account. I feel that it was top contributors who reported me because everytime I post anything in Business and Finance, it gets reported. I think that some of the Top Contributors automatically assume that it's impossible to make money online. They think everything is a scam. I think people should be more careful when reporting answers in this section. You tell me, was this answer solicitation, and HOW? my answer: "Start an online community, a mini myspace in other words or forum. I have a few dating sites and I use adwords to get members. The site is free and I only have about 800 members so far on my main site, but once I have more (about 5,000 or more), I will place ads on there and make money from the ads just like myspace does. There's free software out there for social sites so after you install it, you just work on getting members to sign up. I use Google adwords to advertise mainly. My main site is an asian site so its cheaper for me to advertise since I only only show ads to people out of Asian countries. This is cheaper for advertising, but it also means I'll make less once I place ads on there, because clicks from people in Asia don't pay as well since they don't buy as much online as Americans, Canadians etc. As far as selling domains, that's not easy. I used to do it but it's just getting harder now with the economy the way it is. But most of the people I sold domains to were other domain investors. Advertising is recession proof though. There is always people who are looking to advertise their businesses, even when the economy is bad. Another thing you can do is buy misspelled domains or domains you think you can park. I park domains and some have been pretty successful. There's this one celebrity that just became real famous (realized I can't say his name for certain reasons), and right around the time this was happening, I bought about 4 domain names that are misspellings of his name. Now people searching for his name on the internet who misspell it, end up at my parked page, where I have ads that some of them click on."notice how I said "There's free software out there". They got me so nervous just to mention any company other than Google in this section. I took extra precaution and was still reported. Why? more

Resolved Question: How many MB can I store on a DVD?

I have a lot of files stored on several external hard drives - created over the years from reports and photos from my business. The business is closed and I want to/need to archive the files on DVD. The total size is about 800G. How many GB can I fit on one DVD, and, what is the best way to go about doing this? What hardware and software are required?I should add that I don't want to consolidate all the files on one large external HDD because I don't think they are reliable over the long term. I'd rather store the files on something very durable in case I need to access them later (years later). more

Resolved Question: Has anyone received an invitation to join something called tubely?

I received an invitation which claimed to be from a friend that I know, inviting me to join something called tubely which is supposed to be some sort of social interaction site. However when I called her, she told me that she had never sent me any such message. Several hours later I started receiving telephone calls from friends asking me why I had asked them to join tubely. I had never sent out any such messages. In fact I do not trust those sites. I would never join one and I would never ask one of my friends to join one. Apparently once this message was in my computer it went through my address book and sent out these invitations to everyone in my address book without my knowledge and without my permission. This is also what happened to my friend. The email from tubely had taken over her address book and had sent out invitations to everyone in her address book without her knowledge or permission. Essentially this program from tubely is acting like a virus. I thought that this was against the law. Who do I report this to? do I report it to the FBI? In the email from tubely, I found the contact information for tubely. The contact information for tubely is: Astute software 502 Sampada Bangur Nagar Gorregaon (West) Mumbai - 400 090 Maharashtra, India Essentially these people are acting as criminals and need to be shut down now. I am sick and tired of these creeps and thugs who send out viruses to take over your computer. It is time that we put these creeps and thugs out of business and in jail where they belong. Put the creeps and thugs at Astute software out of business and put them in jail where they belong. more

Voting Question: how to move an operating system?

OK, so I'm working on getting this old computer with a 40 gig hard drive performing better for a friends business and the software he uses looks in specific folders for pictures to include with reports and I don't believe there is any way of changing that. I plan on moving all of his personally pictures and pretty much everything in his my documents folder onto a 500 gig that I'm going to sell to him but I was wondering if I could easily move the OS to the 500 so the program could look on a bigger drive? I hope I've provided enough info, and I want it extremely easy since we need minimal down time. more

Resolved Question: Help finding the right finance software for a sole trader (uk)?

My husband is a freelance musician and I look after his accounts. His business is really taking off and he now has such a variety of work from so many different people its getting hard to keep track. I have been searching for a piece of software that can do the following: - Provide a calendar format viewing pane to see at a glance what jobs he has each day (to mirror his paper diary which will also serve as a backup if he loses it). - Enter income and expenses. - Categorize jobs ie pub gigs, guitar lessons, old peoples homes... - Apply an employer to each job with full contact details - Be able to track phone calls/emails to prospective employers - Generate reports to show where different sources where the income has come from every month - Generate invoices and show overdue and paid invoices The software doesn't need to be able to do VAT, neither do I need to connect to a bank account or reconcile the account. It would be preferable for the software to work on a mac or a pc but to be honest if I can just find something that does all the above I don't care which platform its on. I also don't mind whether its online or not. To give you a better idea of what i'm after I currently use 'Personal Finances' http://www.financessoftware.com/index.php?gclid=CM2X_4-sop8CFRlr4woddHqVZA which is really great and user friendly, but it doesn't have a contact database or the ability to generate invoices. Everything else is great with this tho. Please help if you know of anything that does this, I have been searching for ages! Thank you.Sorry, have tried to use excel and I just don't get on with it. There's too many different things I want to link together, extract etc. I just haven't got the patience for excel. I know its lazy but I want something that looks pretty, like the personal finance software I currently use. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Can I report the company I used to work for to the Better Business Bureau?

I have just quit my job after 3 weeks of working there. I feel, no let me rephrase that, I know that this company scams innocent hard working people out of their money. They finance computers and electronics, and also educational software (ex. hooked on phonics) for low-incomed families in inner cities. They go from school to school preying on these people, half of which are immigrants who can barely speak English. The computers are severely overpriced and they don't even have the newest operating systems. They charge and charge these people and they don't receive any products until they called complaining. I guess you can say I have a heart and can't bear to be a part of this. What can I do? They have been reported to the BBB numerous times and have changed the name of their company several times. Also, they always come up with new reasons as to why a customer can not cancel their contract. When speaking with a customer, the other woman I worked with when asked for her name would lie and tell her a different name so no one could get back to her! more

Resolved Question: Can I sue a Physician over a verbal agreement?

I have been a patient of my doctor for over 5ys. my doctor asked me if I could help her with billing due to having many problems, i told the doctor i could help but i don't own any billing software, she asked how much it would cost and if i could find software under $10,000 she would purchase it if I would agree to do her billing and she stated that this would be a great oppertunity to start my billing service. I told her yes this is to good to be true, but she went along with what she promised. I told her that for doing this i would set up her practice and conduct the billing for the start up for free so the labor i put in can go towards the system she purchased. it takes 14-21 days for processing claims, i was harrassed by staff to obtain money and spoken to as if I was working for the physican and getting a paycheck, the physician kept making excuses not to pay me until she gets all her money and that I uneasy to work with. this attitude all came about after telling the staff that I own my own billing service and all the work i put in is over half the amount spent on the medical billing software, she then stated she wanted me to alter reports to show the Irs a different balance then what she was actually collecting, I stated that this was not a good Idea, she then stated that my services were no longer needed. this means she broke the verbal agreement and i have no access to the system. so this physican should pay me for the setup, labor and any cost related to billing since my work put in was just to get her up and running without paying me. this was not our agreement. the work i supplied for free was to pay into the system which she has and i have no access to. now im being charged fees for claims and i not conducting her billing anymore. I feel as if she tried to use me to set up her office with not intensions of allowing me to run as a billing service to bill for other providers as she stated in the beginning. this is wrong can i sue. i took time off from work and used my gas, skills and time thinking i would be able to run my service due to the provider purchasing the system for me to do her billing. she told me i could start my service and to go through the state to get the business name active, I did all this and for what, she took her key to the office and now i have no access to the system. this was a trick not a treat and justice should be done to show this provider that nothing for nothing leaves nothing! more

Resolved Question: Whats the best accounting software for a food manufacturing business?

We're into food manufacturing, and we have a wide range of products. I can make an excel for our company's financials, but i'd rather have a program that can do everything on its own, including reports and summaries, as doing everything via excel is time consuming. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: How do I report this scamming fraud company?

I recieved a call last week from a company called 'Smithson Publications'. They told me that the books I had purchased were now ready for print, and asked me which school is was I would be nominating for sponser. I NEVER sponsered any school.. and my business is selling software to schools anyway and sponsering a school would be very inappropriate for my business. However the woman sounded very convincing and insisted that I had agreed and that we owed £259 for 20 books or something like that. I asked where the business was located and had no response. I hung up and went onto Google to type this company name in.. the 2nd search suggestion Google came up with was 'Smithson Publications scam'. I clicked into this and found ALOT of people posting near exact stories and that the company works under several names. Ironically my younger brother was given an interview/work trial last week aswel.. with this company! As soon as he told me I got the address off him, I was wondering who it is best I report this too as now I have the b*st*rds address! Thankyou more

Resolved Question: Did Collins software run into an intractable problem ?

"While reports vary, as many as 40 percent of small businesses do not reopen after a major disaster like a flood, tornado or earthquake. These shuttered businesses were unprepared for a disaster; they had no plan or backup systems. When you start to develop your disaster plan, consider three subjects: human resources, physical resources and business continuity. Think about how a disaster could affect your employees, customers and workplace. Think about how you could continue doing business if the area around your facility is closed or streets are impassable. Think about what you would need to serve your customers even if your facility is closed." (Red Cross document - Preparing Your Business For The Unthinkable)To Bill, Collins project more

Voting Question: I've got a Mcafee Total Protection for Small Business Glitch. Help please?

My brother removed Mcafee Total Protection for Small Business from my home computer. He said it wasn't doing anything but clogging it up. And he also said that WEBB school installed it. He left to college the next day, and I was wondering why the security center wasn't throwing these crazy alerts. I opened up the Security Center, and to my surprise, It said "Total Protection for Small Business reports that it is up to date and virus scanning is on." A few weeks later, I checked if Kaspersky would kill it during the installation. Sure enough, it said Mcafee needed to be removed. I clicked "Next" and saw if it could remove, but it didn't. It said there was an error and the computer needs reboot. So I rebooted, and the same thing happened. I got sick of it, and just shut it down. I researched some forums a few weeks later, ran the MCPR tool, and rebooted. I got curious and wondered why Security Center wasn't throwing alerts. I checked and it said that Mcafee software was still on my computer. I reinstalled Kaspersky, and it didn't say Mcafee was on my computer anymore. Now I'm curious. Could I leave them together? (I don't think so). Is there a way I could get rid of Mcafee once and for all (No reformatting)?Ok, I've scanned with the MCPR tool, and rebooted 6 times. No change still. more

Resolved Question: Is this where the Obama economic team has failed US?

How important are small businesses to the U.S. economy? Small firms: • Represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms. • Employ just over half of all private sector employees. • Pay 44 percent of total U.S. private payroll. • Have generated 64 percent of net new jobs over the past 15 years. • Create more than half of the nonfarm private gross domestic product (GDP). • Hire 40 percent of high tech workers (such as scientists, engineers, and computer programmers). • Are 52 percent home-based and 2 percent franchises. • Made up 97.3 percent of all identified exporters and produced 30.2 percent of the known export value in FY 2007. • Produce 13 times more patents per employee than large patenting firms; these patents are twice as likely as large firm patents to be among the one percent most cited.......AND..... So what businesses are not too big to fail? Best I can tell, it must be small businesses. And why should we worry if small businesses fail? Let’s take a look at the numbers. A recent study by the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Office of Advocacy counted 26.8 million businesses in the United States. Of those, 99.9% have fewer than 500 employees and as such are considered small businesses. This means that only one-tenth of one percent have more than 500 employees. Yet, more notable is the fact that according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 98.2% have fewer than 100 employees. And if you are impressed with that number, you may be amazed to learn that in the same report it states that 89.3% of the businesses in America have fewer than 20 employees! Bear with me for just a moment more as I drive this point home. Even more amazing is the fact that 78.6% have fewer than 10 employees and 60.8% have fewer than 5 employees. Are small businesses just an overflow of the work of big business or do small businesses carry their own weight? Let’s look at the facts. According to Census Bureau data on high-patent industries, 98% of the companies patenting telecommunications technology employ fewer than 500 people. In the software publishing industry, 97% of the companies patenting software employ fewer than 500 people. In aerospace products and parts manufacturing, the percentage is 92%. In pharmaceuticals and medical manufacturing, it is 90%. In semiconductor machinery manufacturing, 87% of the companies that patent technology employ fewer than 500 people. It appears self-evident that small business carries most of the weight when it comes to American innovation and job creation. So, why do we allow so many to fail? Maybe because failure many times leads to innovation. According to Wall street Journal guru, Clayton Christensen, the road to innovation is paved with failure. 93% of all innovation starts off in the wrong direction. Almost everyone knows that the failure rate of small business is legendary. However, after failure, the most successful entrepreneurs keep picking themselves up and starting over until they get it right. Many big businesses keep throwing resources at failing initiatives instead of giving up and going in a different direction. Most small businesses, classically strapped for cash tend to respond quickly to failure by changing directions.http://bestbizpractices.org/2009/07/14/america-runs-on-small-business/http://www.sba.gov/advo/stats/sbfaq.pdfAnyone else notice how poorly small business was represented at Obama's "Job Summit" ? more

Voting Question: LoverOfWine can you answer a question for me?

You definitely look like you know what you are talking about! I have an idea for a software program... it is for personal use but would be a great product for a certain business. If I was to only produce it for myself then I could write it in Microsoft Access as it is mainly data entry and pulling up reports from the data entered. It is not a simple Access file it would be quite detailed. Considering I am planning on marketing this product, not for a large price, I need to know my options. I am pretty good at teaching myself programs BUT have never ventured into programming and don't know if I could get my head around it. Is Microsoft Visual Basics user friendly for the novice (ie. like Dreamweaver where you can use the Design layout instead of writing in code) OR is it strictly programming language? And how long does it take to program something? I realize you don't know the size of the program but a simple program... 1 hour, 6 hours etc? Finally, what are my options if I also wanted to use it on Mac? Thank you to LoverOfWine or any other wonderful programmer who can help me with my novice questions. more

Resolved Question: Is this what the Africans and Nigerians doing now in Malaysia?

I read the following article published in the malaysian Star paper:- Is this what the Africans and Nigerians doing now in Malaysia? KUALA LUMPUR: The Black Money scam, also known as the Nigerian 419 scam, was reported by Interpol to have surfaced in Malaysia in 1998. (419 refers to a section of a Nigerian law that deals with fraud.) Most of these con artists enter the country on a social visit pass which allows them to stay up to 30 days. They tend to enrol in local colleges, some even reputable ones, just to obtain student visas so that they could extend their stay here. These so-called students are believed to pay off college staff to mark their attendance. They would then send out random emails and SMS, promising huge piles of money. Usually a “processing fee” is required in advance from their targets. In some of the cases, the victim lost big amounts of money without realising it until the fraudster goes missing. They are such smooth operators that a number of victims took loans from Ah Longs to pay them. In the Black Money scam, victims are told about a stash of bank notes which had been dyed black to avoid Customs detection. The money was supposedly kept in a safe somewhere and the victim should purchase a type of chemical to wash off the dye which would then unveil “genuine” US dollars. The victim would be promised a share of the money. The supposed origin of the riches varied with each new victim. The most popular version is that the money is the lost fortunes of former Nigerian dictator General Abacha which need to be transported out of Nigeria without the Customs knowing it. Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Koh Hong Sun said the con men, upon meeting their target, would produce a small vial of washing liquid called “Universal Automatic Washer” and ask the victim to select any black bank note at random. The black banknote would be washed but with a sleight of hand, the con man would substitute it with a real note. Victims are given the “washed” bank notes and are encouraged to verify their authenticity at a money changer. “They would ask the victim to buy the chemical in order to process more money and that the costs of the chemicals are very high,” he said. These con artists modus operandi of “layering,” where a different person is sent to each meeting with the victim. According to sources, places like Puchong Prima, a hotel in Ampang and several areas in Kepong are regular meeting spots for such transactions. Using laptops along with a special software, the con men are also able to forge government documents. Comm Koh, who confirmed this, said that raids on the “students’ residence” found no textbooks but merely computers and laptops. In a raid conducted by the police recently, police arrested 29 Nigerians at their office at Metro Prima in Kepong. All those arrested claimed that they were undergraduates in the Klang Valley, showing their student cards instead of passports. A check by The Star showed that some colleges here had about 70% African students. These places provide hassle-free enrolment for foreign students who pay application fees ranging from US$170 to US$330. Investigations also revealed that these so- called students did not have a clear financial source, yet they had no problems paying tuition fees and sending money home to their countries. In fact, some of them live in posh condominiums and drive luxury cars like the BMW X5. They are also known to use local women to carry out their deception, targeting single mothers or college students and using their bank accounts to conduct their shady business. Some of them, when caught by police, would falsely claim to be Muslims and recite verses from the Quran to gain sympathy, said sources. Most of these con artists are deported to their home countries as authorities usually lack evidence to charge them. However, a number of them would return to Malaysia under different passports. Comm Koh said the authorities were using biometric systems as a measure against such the conmen to prevent them from returning. “But as long as there are Malaysians who are fuelled by greed, there will be someone to take advantage of them,” he said. more

Resolved Question: Do you believe porn is going on in the workplace?

Originally published 04:45 a.m., October 18, 2009, updated 12:55 p.m., October 18, 2009 Workplace Porn Wastes Time, Cash Cheryl Wetzstein First of two parts On Sept. 29, my Washington Times colleague Jim McElhatton led the paper with a story about National Science Foundation (NSF) employees accessing pornography at their work computers. The porn problem was pervasive enough to trigger a massive internal investigation. One senior NSF executive, for instance, had "spent at least 331 days looking at pornography on his government computer and chatting online with nude or partially clad women, without being detected," Mr. McElhatton reported, based on records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. The NSF executive retired once his pornography use was exposed, but investigators estimated that he alone wasted between $13,800 and $58,000 of taxpayer monies. No one should imagine that the NSF scandal is isolated or rare. Workplace pornography is a major problem, according to the American Management Association (AMA). Employers are fighting back with anti-porn filters on computers; as of 2007, about two-thirds of U.S. companies used such software, the AMA said. But there are still ways to evade the filters, and inexplicably, many employees seem determined to access porn at work, even if it costs them their jobs. Listen to these comments, gathered by Idaho Post-Register reporter Corey Taule in an award-winning 2007 article on pornography. Mark J. Holubar, a human resources executive, told Mr. Taule that his company is clear about its no-porn-at-work policy, but he still had an employee confess to him: "Yeah, I know I did it. I know it was wrong. I don't know why, I was just doing it." And Gordon Boyle, a pastor at Calvary Chapel Church in Idaho Falls, Idaho, who counsels men for sex addiction, said it was "so bizarre" that employees would look at porn even when they knew they were being monitored. "I don't think we understand the grip or the pull [of pornography]," Mr. Boyle told Mr. Taule. That, I think, is the big question: What makes presumably well-educated, well-paid professionals risk everything they worked for just for another look? The answer is simple — sex addiction, says Michael Leahy, author of the new book "Porn @ Work: Exposing The Office's #1 Addiction." Mr. Leahy, a recovering sex addict, believes he was one of the first people to get involved with workplace porn. As an IBM computer specialist in the early 1980s, he and colleagues used porn at work years before online pornography and personal computers entered American homes. Later, as an executive with a private office and top-of-the-line computers, Mr. Leahy found even more ways to spend hours engrossed in porn. "I was that person who is every line manager's and HR professional's worst nightmare — the sex addict at work who flew under the radar for years and never got caught," Mr. Leahy wrote. How does porn interfere with work? Initially, it just consumes countless hours (viewing images, concealing images, plus regular trips to private places to masturbate). As the compulsive behaviors grow, porn-related rituals detract from work performance, Mr. Leahy wrote. A person preoccupied with porn, for instance, will miss meetings, fail to make calls or leave projects unfinished. They may seem to undergo a personality change, becoming easily irritated, unreasonably defensive or socially withdrawn. It's not uncommon for sex addicts to lose their spouses or their jobs, Mr. Leahy wrote. They also are prone to acting out sexually, exposing themselves to sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy, or legal problems "ranging from nuisance offenses to rape," Mr. Leahy wrote. Business managers, he added, are particularly alarmed by sexual harassment or hostile workplace lawsuits filed over employees' bad behavior. Mr. Leahy has some solutions to offer, but first he wants to sound the alarm about college students. Their college experiences are in a pornography-friendly subculture, he told me. "But the key is, when they have to stop — when they are made to stop — what will they do?" Next week: Collision course. • Send e-mail to cwetzstein@washingtontimes.com. http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/oct/18/wetzstein-workplace-porn-wastes-time-cash/?feat=home_columns& more

Resolved Question: Anybody else scamed by stardomindia?

Hi, there is a work from home company named 'stardomindia'. Apparently you have to pay 1500 rupees and they will provide you with 5 mb data for punctuation checking, a software cd and a british language kit. Taking the risk I have discovered that this business is actually a scam. While correcting the pages, once saved you can not go back to previous page. Once they pay depending on the quality of work then why they don't allow to go back to previous page??!!!! Therefore is more important for them to hunt your mistakes, a low quality work and find reasons for not paying you. Also the initial cd that contains 1mb of data is the same for everybody, some of the pages that are to be corrected are not even visible, and most of the pages start repeating quite often. The report it is issued with your percentage is not shared with you however if you would like a new report then you will have to pay 500 rupees!!!!!!!!! The british language kit does not even work!!!!! Hence, please if anybody else went through the same with this company, please contact me as I plan to publish this issue in a newspaper so this company will not scam other people in the future more

Resolved Question: POS software to market for normal PC?

Hello everybody, I would like to develop a POS software and then afterwards market it (locally for the moment and internationally afterwards). The software will target medium businesses like video clubs, small shops, pharmacies etc.. not something that is too complex but still is able to manage the business's stock properly and to generate reports for the user. I would like your suggestions about: 1) the technology that I should use (should be free and reliable). 2) the legal aspects that I should consider. 3) the requirements that I should take into considerations. 4) marketting strategies. I would appreciate of anything else that will be helpful for me. Alos, if you have previous experience about developing such a product, please let me know about the cost, effort and time taken to put it on the market. Thanking you in advance for you help. Voting Question: Can I refuse to extend business travel?

So a little background, I am currently out of the country on business. I have been gone for almost a month now. Initially i was only supposed to stay a few weeks. So this is the second extension I am on now. I was recently asked to extend it even further. I asked what the exit strategy basically is, and how long till the end goal is met, they essentially told me not to worry about that. Which basically means, the possibility is there that they ask me again for another extension next week. I was supposed to fly home tomorrow night. Now, add into this mix, that I am currently hourly, and any overtime i had work in the past, has been incorrectly paid to me. They are fixing one aspect of that, the most recent, however have failed to address the previous incidents. On top of that, there is no one in HR that is familiar with California Labor law (where I am employed), so when they were trying to fix the most recent error, they were asking me to clarify for them. I am not a legal expert in any way (I do software), so I am able to make errors here or not advise them correctly. Due to complications, I am unable to finish my origian task here (not my error, outside sources). Basically I was trying to be adamant about returning tomorrow, but they brought up the point "So you will leave without finishing your task?". My contract doesn't specify travel requirements or not. At least that I remember, it is at home, but I havent been there in a month so~. Not to mention prior to my business trip I was working 10-12 hour days as well, and through the weekends often. At the beginning of my employment, my manager had asked me to work overtime but not report it. I have no written evidence of this, outside of a question I asked our HR then about it, with the fact that he suggested I do something like that. The only other evidence I have is that I have referenced this event in emails, but no response. Which can go both ways, he never denied these events took place. Ultimately I was going to at this point in time either tell them, no, I won't do it, or just flat out quit citing labr law infractions on their behalf and a significantly different work environment than normal. Does anyone have any insight on this though? If I refuse to extend my travel again, can they freely terminate me? more

Voting Question: IT or Networking Question for Business (2 computers side by side for retail)?

I am trying to have 2 side by side computers with POS systems for our retail clothing store. My Question is, how do we link these two together. I don't want to have to run 2 different reports every day for each computer, everything needs to be together. Also, do I need 2 complete systems or can we run everything off one computer and have 2 monitors, printers, scanners, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated! I dont need the net and files shared, just the POS software. more

Resolved Question: What are your thoughts on this Americans take on cricket? Do you think he missed something?

Today, This Week In Random Sports brings you cricket. No, not the shitty $10/month cell phone service that you only see on the North side of your city (or downtown depending on where you live). We’re talking real, live British/Indian Association cricket. Why you ask? Well that’s an excellent question, and one which we have no good answer for. Yet, we’ll try to formulate one. It all started last week at a company outing to the local minor league baseball game. I happened to be sitting in the near vicinity of two Indian folks (think dot com, no birds were harmed) and they began discussing cricket. I was somewhat intrigued (read, bored and roasting in the 90 degree heat) so I chimed in. They proceeded to explain how cricket works to me, and just like the old school game of telephone, I’ll relay those rules to you fine readers now after the jump. It all starts with the bowler. This is a bit of a contention around these parts as we are very, very staunch defenders of the fact that Sundays are for bowling. Therefore it is an unwritten rule that all cricket matches must begin on a Sunday. Look, we don’t make the rules, we just report them. Anyway, this bowler chap (like how we just drop into quaint British speak at our leisure?) tries to bowl the batter out. He basically throws a single seamed baseball at a dude with a cricket bat. The cricket bat, which is very handy in a barroom brawl, is shorter and wider than a traditional baseball bat. Think of that paddle that your principal used to beat that ass with before everyone’s parents pussed out and stopped spanking them. Once the guy pitches bowls the ball, all Hell breaks loose. Honestly, this is where I lost the thread of the conversation the other day. They started talking about how to make outs, how to score runs, and I hadn’t had any beer so my concentration was shot. I believe they said you can only get out if you hit the ball in the air to someone, miss the ball and let it hit a wicket (yes, they are called wickets in cricket as well), or if you fail to write software faster than the 2 Yanks that you’re trying to replace. You score by running in a straight line back and forth with a partner. The whole running with a partner thing sounds damned gay but it’d be hilarious if they ran into each other. I probably wouldn’t watch a 5-day match just to see that though. Apparently the five day matches aren’t as popular anymore as they’re supposed to be all formal and a dress-up occasion. There’s some new form of cricket called 20-over, or 20 something, or 21 Jump Street or some such shit. It’s supposed to be shorter and more fun because everyone just goes up there hacking like a beer league softball player instead of trying to slap it around like little Davie Eckstein. Either way, I’m sure cricket isn’t fun. It’s named after an annoying insect and you generally wear some goofy ass outfits to play it. Including some faggoty shin guards that make Barry Bonds’ armor look like cheesecloth. Cricket also led to the creation of country clubs starting at Sussex CCC (says Wikipedia). That should be sufficient proof that cricket officially Sussexes. Or something like that. Well, this has turned into a train wreck. We have a first in TWIRS, a game that appears to have no redeeming qualities. Too bad cricket, you really should follow the wireless carrier’s business model. Get people who are too poor to play a proper sport to jump on board. Now that’s the ticket!EDIT: Sourced from a blog. Will post the link shortly. more

Resolved Question: UK to cut broadband connections for illegal downloads of copyrighted material, your opinion?

It was recently reported that the UK Government plans to cut or restrict the internet service of anyone downloading Music, Films, Games and Software. "The UK government intends to cut the broadband connections of internet users who repeatedly download copyrighted music, films and other material under a new law set to be proposed by the government." Source The Times A recent studied showed that a staggering 95% of all downloads are Illegal, that statistic really surprised me. My opinion is that if the Government go ahead with its plan there will be serious consequences in the entertainment business. If I had to pay for all mu music I would not own an iPod or my Bose Headphones simple as that, and im sure many people feel the same way. People wouldn't listen to music as much and that in its self will have a decline on the market. I would love to be able to buy all my music from iTunes, but its way to expensive, im certain that someone will comment on this saying that it is illegal and wrong, that person proberly has enough money to buy there own music. Im not poor in any way but I have over 2,500 songs which is about £4,000 worth of music. It doesn't help that im a student with student fees up to my neck. Anyway tell me what you think. more

Resolved Question: Is this Legal?: Software Company Demanded Receipts & Canceled My Auctions; On Aug. 11 I received the following?

email(em) from auction site member representing co. of product I was selling (Omitting names of parties involved, Auction site=?B & Co. that demanded receipts=?A, email=em): ?A is the copyright owner of digital geographic map data and data contained on the Navigation DVD, as indicated by the copyright notice on the DVD. Your auction was flagged b/c of multiple auctions for our product and b/c the pricing of our product is below the retail price, & further information is required to verify this is an authentic product. Purchasing any product from a source other than the manufacturer, authorized vendor or reseller is a risk. The product could be stolen, counterfeit, recalled, unauthorized copy, etc. An authorized vendor would provide you with proper packaging, warranties, manuals for use, & proof of purchase. Please provide the following information: -the name & address of the vendor, along with a copy of the purchase receipt. Your cooperation is sincerely appreciated, & we look forward to your reply. Anti-piracy Team Manager [?A] Corporation email: piracy@[?A].com phone: xxx/xxx-xx63 --- Ignored em b/c wasn't 100% sure if it was legit & also b/c felt it was nobody's business to see those receipts. Never called no. listed nor emailed. --- Exactly 29 hrs later received em from ?B stating: The listing was removed b/c it violated ?B's policy. The rights owner or an agent authorized to act on behalf of the rights owner, ?A, LLC, notified ?B that this listing violates intellectual property rights. When ?B receives a report of this type of violation, we remove the listing to comply with the law. Only copyright owners can copy, distribute, perform, or publicly display their work. ?B doesn't allow sellers to list unauthorized copies of copyrighted works, even if they're unpublished. Unauthorized copies include (but aren't limited to) backup, pirated, duplicated, or bootlegged copies. ... --- I called ?B but they were of no help & said once original owner/copyright holder reports something, they must simply comply with their requests & that I should contact them. I called several no’s for ?A., but person in charge of that dept. was unavailable. I relisted 2 of this item again along w/ long explanation of what occurred. ?B removed them the next day (Aug. 13) & banned me from listing any new items for next 7 days. Next day as well (Aug 13) lady in charge of anti-piracy dept. of ?A called me. I expressed to her my views, she said more illegal copies are sold than legal & that it’s their right to verify if this an authentic product & that if I had simply complied & sent in the receipts, that none of this would’ve happened. She also said how are they supposed to protect their products & customers if they’re not allowed to do this. I emailed receipts & asked her when I would be able to list items again. She said I wouldn't need to, that everything will be taken care of once she contacts the store where I purchased the items from & once she contacts the auction site. Well, it wasn't quite that easy. When she said this, I thought items would’ve been posted back up & running along w/ current bids still intact. Instead 5 hrs & 24 min. later after submitting receipts, I received following em from ?B: We have restored the following listing (list of 9 entries w/ item numbers & title of the listings): It now appears as an ended item. To relist your item, click the "Relist" link in the listing. The listing will restart automatically. If there were any bidders for your item, we emailed them to let them know the listing for (it's same list of the 9 listings) was removed in error. We've also explained how they can find your item again if you relist it. We're sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you. --- Had to contact ?B to have my seller's restriction removed b/c was unable to list the items again b/c they banned me from doing so for 7 days. Listing fees were refunded. Though everything taken care of, damage has been done. Customer's confidence in me has declined / vanished. Less people now viewing, watching & bidding on this item. Just this morning I received following em from a member of ?B who had purchased this item before listings were removed, & of which I had shipped already & it was on its way: I recently recieved the below email from ?B and denied the credit card charge. Since then I have recieved the product & am installing it. If it works I will lift the cancellation. [item number & title of listing] Unfortunately, the item is no longer available for purchase. This is disappointing for everyone, but sometimes it's necessary to protect you as a buyer. [explanation of item not following ?B’s guidelines or of copyright issues.] If the seller is able to fix the problem and relist the item, we hope you'll bid on it again. [encouraging buyer to go to ?B to shop for more items.] --- Legality? Extortion / blackmail?: Show me receipts----------or you won't be allowed to sell this! Privacy issues?: Should be nobody's business where I purchased this item. Also, what if things like condoms & such were on receipts? What if I didn't have the receipts? I'm not a business but individual who sells things to help my family & I pay bills. Consumer rights?: Once I purchase product, is it not mine to do as I please? Lies?: Lies from ?A: Email from ?A stated that my product was selling below retail? Well, I started my listings low, but a majority sold @ $2 - $4 higher than a popular online retail store (?C). The lowest it sold was $3 - $6 less than ?C & this was in about 2 instances. In about 2 or 3 cases it even sold $6 - $14 higher than ?C. Lies from ?B: Em from ?B stated "this listing violates intellectual property rights" & that's why it was removed. I never stated I was original owner of data on dvd or that I created the maps. I’m Outraged. Feel bullied, taken advantage of, hurt & betrayed. Anxiously await your responses. more

Resolved Question: Is the government trying to give socialized internet access so they can monitor people better?

I was trying to think about why the Democrats kept pusing for government socialized internet access and based off of the other behavior of Obama, Bush, and even Clinton I realized why. The private companies providing access makes it harder for the government to monitor who searches what when and to more heavily monitor the internet. One of my customers used to work for the White House under clinton in the data mining department. He said that when people would search the internet they could monitor everything they surf including bank and credit card information. I was shocked by this, but it brought everything together for me. This can be effective in combating terrorism, but is a massive invasion of privacy if misused. For those of you that were afraid of Bush listening in on your phone conversations, this should really scare you and is much more invasive to me. What if you write something they do not like? They are watching everything. The Clinton administration consistently championed the > right of government employees to stick their noses > almost anywhere — into people’s email, car, house, or > personal effects.
