New gardening business
The bulk of her garden maintenance business is lawn edging, weeding, pruning and general tidying up but Melanie will also mow your lawn, your hedge or even clean out your greenhouse.
"I got my first few customers from my initial leaflet drop but now it's mainly word of mouth. There were a few quiet months in the winter but I'm getting really busy again now and will soon be earning as much as I was before."
But money wasn't the motivation for Melanie's career change – it was a desire to achieve a better work life balance. One advantage already has been becoming a season ticket holder for her beloved Bluebirds.
"I've only missed two home games this season whereas previously I would have been lucky to have got to two games all year because of working most Saturdays. more
Accent Marketing to lay off 180 workers
Accent Marketing Services LLC notified the state of Florida Monday it would be laying off all 180 employees at its Winter Haven customer service call center by July.
The workers provide telephone customer service to customers of a pay-as-you-go wireless service provider, says Kelly M. Hilton, spokeswoman for Accent in an e-mail.
While Accent continues to service the wireless company it would not disclose, Hilton says the change will help streamline operations.
Accent will continue to lease the 26,000 square-foot space at 5300 Recker Highway and will use it as a satellite office for a small number of employees. Accent will also continue to look for new business to replace the lost call volume at the facility, says Hilton.
The company is helping its employees to look for work by conducting onsite job fairs and providing relocation assistance for employees that transfer to other positions within the company. more
AMD offers breathing room with Business Class PCs
AMD's decision to move into the business PC market this week reminds me of the first line of Shopgirl, a novella by Steve Martin, which points out that working in the glove department at a large retail store means "you are selling things that nobody buys anymore."

Portfolio Recovery Associates Exiting Third-Party Collections Business
Portfolio Recovery Associates' decision to exit the contingent fee third-party collections business was driven by the opportunity to redeploy the Anchor collections staff to the more profitable, rapidly expanding business of owned-portfolio collections. The fee-based, third-party collections business was responsible for just 2% of the Company's first-quarter 2008 revenue and less than 0.5% of net operating income for the period.
"Portfolio Recovery Associates has decided to exit the business of collecting on contingency fee third-party portfolios overseen by Anchor Receivables Management and redeploy these highly trained collectors to our core owned-portfolio business. In this capacity, they will be able to make a far more significant contribution to our Company's growth and profitability. more

Voting Question: Which tax preparation software is best for a small business?
I'm trying to file tax for my community and I was just doing research on which software will work best for about 50 or 60 returns. I'm not looking at Turbotax or H&R Block type of softwares, I'm looking for something a little serious, quick, simple, and an affordable price. I went to intuit.com and they have Proseries Tax and Lacarte Tax. are there any other type of software out there that works the same but just cheaper? Thanks. moreVoting Question: If I can't afford a CPA, then who or what should do my taxes?
For those of us in the lower marginal brackets, who should we let do our taxes? Up to this point, the overriding response (which I greatly appreciate, naysayers included) has been that CD-ROMS are still as innacurrate as the person deciding where the input goes, tax preparers in most states still not need licensing, therefore they are totally unreliable and unverifiable, and even large firms like H&R Block are still abound with errors. If all the aforementioned is correct, then who do I go to if I cannot afford a CPA? Apparently, any alternative to a CPA is no good. While this may be true, the majority of people will never use a CPA unless they absolutely have to, and can afford to do so. So, what if I want to do taxes and I have an accounting degree and one year tax experience, plus 5+ years of online preparation for myself and my family, plus drive and ability? Should I schlep around H&R Block when they are comfortable selling software to the unknowing and uneducated taxpayer? Should I try to work for some tax office whose manager has a GED and a gold tooth? What if these are my only alternatives to starting my own tax business? What if I have a family to feed? What if no CPA firm is currently hiring college graduates? What if I have IRS training, familiarity with a reputable software, produced by company who has a customer-service hotline, and I turn down taxpayers who require a very complex return. What if I could access a large, large base of potential clients with a couple of newspaper advertisements? Could I pull it off? Would I be probably end up being sued? What if I was the most ethical person you ever met? What if I was vehimately opposed to corrupt or questionable tax schemes? And, I made a consicous effort to not prepare returns that were too complex. (Remember, I am an accountant, I have had several tax and business classes, I have been exposed and tested on many tax issues, albeit some more difficult than others.) But, can it work if I work my ass off, I research whenever I get confused, I take proactive steps to limit any errors (such as I'm doing now), and I make sure to remain as professional to my clients as one would expect? Then what? Could it work? Remember, I'm planning on targeting a very large potential customer pool, in several cities. What are my odds? If so many others are doing it (GED and Gold Tooth), why cant I? Please, all opinions are sincerely appreciated. Even if you think I'm still a total idiot, I still really appreciate your opinion, so long as you rationalize. Anyways, thanks again for all your great answers. Please keep em coming. moreVoting Question: Why are so many tax preparers not accountants?
How come I have yet to have an actual accountant prepare my tax return? I've been to places like H&R Block and even to an IRS charity service, but my preparer has never been college educated. Does the H&R Block course really serve as a viable substitute for an accounting degree in terms of tax preparation? Are they that comprehensive? Why shouldn't I start my own tax business if I'm a recent accounting graduate with an IRS tax training course under my belt? What can less-educated people offer the general public that I cannot? Especially if I buy a good software package. How difficult could it be? moreResolved Question: I just finished with income tax preparations..where can I find a tax professional software to start a bussines?

My idea is VERY simple; Over the past years i hear many cases where people hated going to H&R Block or some other places to get their taxes because either they had to wait or they had to return home to get more documents. Also, sometimes you are just unable to make it to the office because of the kids....College students often struggle with taxes and are unaware how to maximize their refund legally.. Those other tax services charge upwards of $200+ to have an instant refund (RAL) or can charge 125+ to have a rapid refund (RF) My tax service would charge flat rate $70 for simple returns $80 for simple return + Rapid refund $90 for simple return + Instant Refund **complex returns would be decided on a case by case basis** College Students flat rate of $40 (RF) You can also make appointments for us to come to where you are (whether its at home or on your lunch break)...I am thinking about charging an extra $5 for this service ------- I've been doing my family & friends taxes since I was 16. Instead of attending summer classes; I went and got my tax prep certification from National Tax School (I am thinking about attending H&R Block also just in case I missed something) I already have my EFIN I also have the bank I am going to work through (approved) I know which software I am going to use Basically everything is in order; I just want to know do you think this could work? This will not be my only source of income...I am a college student so after the busy tax season I will still be busy with school...I am just thinking about doing this to make a little extra money... I worked for a tax office last year...and my created my rates because I was able to do a simple return in about 30 minutes... But I do see where I would need to charge more for travel time. moreResolved Question: Mobile Tax Preparation Business?

Hello. I am a CPA and understand taxes fairly well....... well enough to do it for neighbors. If I want to start a "side business" and perform 20-30 tax returns next year, what is the most cost effective way to be able to file the taxes online and get direct deposit for ALL of my clients. I don't want to invest in a $2000 software package. I normally use TaxCut for my personal taxes. Do I just "buy" that software 20-30 times to use it for my clients? Any advice to minimize the cost per customer is greatly appreciated. moreResolved Question: Question about 8453-OL form?
for the part 2, 6c, which says; I authorize the U.S. Treasury and its designated Financial Agent to initiate an ACH electronic funds withdrawal entry to the financial institution account indicated in the tax preparation software for mayment of my federal taxes owed on this tax return and/or a payment of estimated tax. I further understand that this authorization may apply to future federal tax payments that I direct to be debited through the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System. In order for me to initiate future payments, I request that the IRS send me a personal identification number (PIN) to access EFTPS. This authorization is to remain in full force and effect until I notify the U.S. Treasury Financial Agent at 1-888-353-4537 no later than 2 business days prior to the payment (settlement) date. Another type of financial data that could benefit from using the XBRL accounting software would be for IRS Tax Returns, such data as redemptions, wages, salary, and total income could all be assigned a XBRL data field to represent that particular data. Additional the report could bee used by both consumers and the government. On every tax return an adjusted gross income is the information used to determine additional taxes or credits. Tax preparation could then b streamlined, accurate and more reliable and understandable to the average user as well, being computer friendly toward the consumer; currently XBRL is limited to corporations and has not addressed expanding to small businesses. moreResolved Question: I'm going to start a small Tax Preparation business out of my house. I am starting a home based business doing taxes, and i am trying to find out who has the best software? moreResolved Question: Are my S-corp Distributions supposed to be taxed on my personal tax return?
My tax guy and myself had a parting of the ways. He already did my corporate tax return, but I am doing my personal one. I've been using one of the websites for tax preparation and all is pretty easy and simple. I worked for a company for half a year and then went into business on my own so I have 2 w-2's, plus my K-1. So here's my problem....the software shows me getting back 6500 just from my two w-2's. On another schedule I'm asked to enter my distributions which is line 16 on the k-1. When I do this, my refund is reduced by 2500. It appears to me that the additional distribution funds are being taxed as income. Is that correct? I thought the whole point of the s-corp is to avoid double taxation? I already paid the tax for the distributions on my paychecks. If I made $1000, I took $500 as a dist. and 500 as income, but I paid tax for $1000 on $500 I paid myself as income. So I've already paid taxes on the distributions. Am I missing something here? moreResolved Question: Help I want my own tax preparation business...?
