Falcons rebound by pounding Philly foe

All over FTC from the start, LD had the Coyotes all but rooted in their defensive end as the Falcons moved the ball at will and uncorked plenty of uncontested pops at beleaguered keeper Colleen Dwyer (7 saves).

And when Alwine's left-rooted rip from the edge of six punched LD in front, the Falcons promptly shifted into cruise control even though just 3:45 had ticked off.

Even at 1-0, this thing was over.

Later scores from Miller, White and Alwine's second finish just added to LD's therapeutic onslaught. Need more? LD unloaded 18 first-half strikes, surrendering just a Megan McGuigan direct from a step outside the penalty area.

While that restart hopped to keeper Taylor Alwine (0 saves), LD's freshman keeper could have spent most all of the half working on her tan, especially since she touched the ball just six times. more

Blogging to Bigger Job Opportunities

As self-branding has emerged as a popular and viable method of boosting one's career, blogging has become a useful marketing tool.

Jason Alba, the CEO of career-management site JibberJobber.com, said building up an online portfolio through blogging establishes expertise and is one of the best forms of networking.

"A lot of people are looking for people to put in articles and are going to Google to seek experts and someone with knowledge on a subject," he explains. "I've been approached for articles and speaking and partnerships, and they're finding me through Google. They're finding my personality and my depth because of my blog."

On his blog is a monthly column called "You Get It," where he profiles a person who has successfully used the Web for career purposes. more

Chatroom - Forest Hills Journal

"Pay day loans are a really stupid idea, but so is smoking, drinking, gambling, etc. If people want that service and are willing to pay for it, I don't know why government needs to get involved. There are always unintended consequences to laws like this. Will some of these desperate people turn to shoplifting, burglary, or robbery? I'm certain that some will. With the difficult times we are going through right now, I can't think of a worse time to do this. The new rates are not high enough to compensate the companies for their risk and most will probably close. The bottom line? Thousands of more people will be out of work and tens of thousands of people with nowhere to turn when 'their money runs out before then month does.'"

In a New York Minute

The 6.6% decline in comparable sales proved enough to send total sales down 1.5% to $270.1 million, but could improve as the year progresses -- management expects a low- to mid- negative single-digit range for the full year. It also plans to open 25 to 30 new stores during fiscal 2008, which should keep the top line steady until consumers start to see some relief from record gas and food prices.

Like every other retailer, management at New York & Co. is keeping a tight lid on inventory and undertaking various other cost controls. Its savvy expense management for the quarter boosted gross margins and also put operating cash flow firmly in positive territory. It's also a key reason why management felt comfortable enough to boost its full-year earnings guidance range two pennies, to $0.44-$0.54. more

Taxman's binding and not-so-binding rulings

A good example of a recent ATO publication is a draft, "Self-Managed Super Fund Ruling on Business Real Property or BRP (SMSF 2008/D3)." No one should underestimate the complexity of this issue. This draft ruling, which the ATO does not expect to have finalised until later this year, runs to 68 pages and in our estimation doesn't waffle and isn't overly repetitious.

BRP is real property used wholly and exclusively in the running of one or more businesses, and the definition of BRP is important to an increasing number of SMSFs. One of the key issues about BRP is that a super fund can acquire it from members, their relatives or related entities (such as companies or trusts) at a genuine market value.

For example, suppose I personally own a shop in a normal shopping strip and above the shop is a small flat that can be used for light commercial or residential purposes. more

Business Planner Software Questions asked

Resolved Question: How come I can't stick with any career?

Right now I'm 16 years old. I go to High-School and I'm a pretty good student. Even though I'm supposed to have fun, I do a lot of research about different careers that I'm interested in. A few of my friend's already have an idea in the direction that they want to go. I however, change my idea literally daily. Even now, in the summer, I still think about it. It's so annoying, sometimes I just drive myself insane thinking about it. The longest that I've been with one career was a week. I just want to pick the right one or stop thinking about it. Some of the careers that I thought of were a Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Pharmacist, Cardiologist, Heart Surgeon. History Teacher (Elementary-College), Lawyer, Business Manager, Financial Advisor/Planner, something like what you see on Law & Order (The people that go out and integrate the people), and a Cop. Computer Scientist, Computer engineer, Graphic Artist, Software Developer, and that's about all I could think of. I truly have thought of all of these careers at one point. My true dream is to start a Business and become a billionaire. That's truly want I want in this life, but I can't think of any ideas that could get me there besides from starting a new technology company like Sony or Microsoft. Please help me, if you'd like to know my interests, please feel free to read my profile or contact me through e-mail. I really need help with this, and I really want to stop thinking about it all the time. Thanks for all your help! more

Resolved Question: Is he flirting with me?

I work in an office where i'm a supervisor. We have a hired consultant who I've been working with for about 4 months. I sensed some sort of attraction right from the start, We have remained professional. As I'm sure both of us are a bit afraid of "sexual harrassment" but... I think he's sexy. Recently, it was announced that his contract with us had expired and he would no longer be with us in Feb. I suggested in a meeting we have a Farewell Happy Hour (I'm known as the "event planner"). Then after the meeting (maybe even a day later) I sent him an email that said "Hey, If you want to stay in touch my home email address is _______________). He responds back "I would like that also. My home email address is ____________. You can also use my work email address. " Then, I sent him an email to his home email address saying "Here are a couple of recommended bars (since he's not from the area) that we could go for a happy hour. [ I listed the bars, one happened to be a sushi bar.]" I didn't hear back from him, so I sent a txt message to his cell that said "Do you like sushi?" to which he responded "yes I like sushi. But Tammy doesn't" Tammy is the boss that contracted with him. I forgot that she was in town for some business meetings and staying at the same hotel as him." So I responded "Ohhhhhhh, That's too bad. I know a great sushi place. Oh well. See you tomorrow." and he responded "Yea, too bad. See u tomorrow." I saw him today, and he had to train me on some things for work since he's leaving. It was computer training and software training so one-on-one at the computer. We were rather close to each other and it was quite comfortable. Several times our glances caught each other and we'd look each other in the eyes as we talked. But.... Tammy was also in the office (she's usually not when we talk) so he seem'd a bit more reserved. Usually we joke and talk... but it was down to business. I'm not sure if we're flirting... or if we're remaining professional. Help? Since his contract is ending and he's from out of town... i'd be open to a little fling.... but don't want to overstep any boundries. more

Resolved Question: I don't think I like my new job, what should I do?

Hello everyone, I haven't posted much on here, but I need some advice. I recently finished my Master's degree in business management and decided to leave my old comfortable, low paying job for what I thought would be a new challenge as a Buyer/Planner with a growing, private company. My old job was sort of a joke, people would goof off all day on the net and socialize for most of the day. There was also no chance of me moving up in the company unless I wanted to relocate across the country, and I just was not up for it, especially because they would not pay for the moving expenses. I am starting to regret leaving for the following reasons: 1. The company is very strict, they have an open floor plan-no cubicles, therefore I feel like every action is being watched. Don't get me wrong, I know we're all there to do our 8 hours, but it is just really uncomfortable. I was sort of accustomed to "cube" life and not feeling like I was being watched 24/7. The president of the company is also 80 years old and very old fashioned, I've heard that the managers and the president are not very flexible, and once they do not like you, you're days are basically numbered. I've heard a lot of negative stories and there are also a lot of snitches looming around, so I try not to my myself a target. 2. Their technology is obsolete, the the buyer/planners use one software program and excel to do their job, this leaves a lot of room for unnecessary busy work, sometimes I feel like I spend more time punching in numbers on the system than doing anything else, it's very boring and tedious and I don't feel like I am being challenged. They also took away internet access from almost everyone (since they suspected that people were abusing it some time ago and don't trust them with it) only a select few have access to e-mail and internet. I feel like the internet could make the job so much more efficient in regards to researching products and contacting vendors, I feel like I have limited access to everything. They have the money to update their technology, but don't feel like the money should be spent in that area. They seem to spend more of their money on their factory equipment, since that seems to be technologically advanced. The only upside is that I have met a lot of nice people, and the guy that I work with is very nice and has sort of become my mentor. He is considered to be my supervisor of my day-to-day work but does not have any weight on any major decisions, such as asking for time off etc. that is really up to the manager. He also tries to reassure me and tell me that the job is not boring, it gets more interesting as you learn. I also get paid a lot more money and I've heard that if I prove myself, I will advance in the company. I also work pretty decent hours, 7-4:30...usually in the door by 5 the latest, so I have the whole night...I also don't have to take work home and never have to work on the weekends. When I originally took the job, I thought it was a great idea since it was the exact role that I wanted...then again, it's only been a little over a week and I probably shouldn't be so quick to judge. I am trying to tell myself it's just growing pains, since I was used to such a slack environment...my supervisors were so flexible and I can basically get away with anything....now I am being faced with the opposite. Do you think it is just growing pains, or does it sound like I made a bad choice? The purpose of taking the job was to gain more experience in the buying/planning arena when I was looking for jobs I kept getting turned down because of my lack of experience. The guy that I am working with also has 20 yrs of buying/planning experience...so I am looking to try to stick it out for at least a year..but sometimes I wonder if that is possible...could someone please throw out some advice?? I would appreciate it. Thanks.  more
