Brunner gets few changes by panel

Among the proposed changes in the bill, which now goes to the full Senate: Bipartisan teams must transport ballots and machine memory cards from the polls, and absentee ballots postmarked by Election Day can be counted if they are received up to the 11th day after an election.

But the bill also includes provisions that Brunner didn't seek, including allowing the secretary of state to issue only temporary directives 90 days before and 40 days after an election, and requiring public review before any permanent order.

Brunner caused a stir among some election officials earlier this year when she ordered counties using touch-screen voting machines to make paper ballots available at the polls, and election officials also have complained about last-minute directives from former Secretary J. more

Days of fun, sun: Beaches, businesses stay busy over Memorial weekend

In a quick poll of Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce members, chamber executive director Rick Reynolds discovered that business owners reported a "very strong to record-setting" weekend.

"Around here, the weather is always the wild card," Reynolds said. "It was a perfect scenario."

Four sunny days brought beachgoers to the sand. A sea of umbrellas lined the coast in Surf City on Sunday as people threw frisbees, tossed around balls and soaked in the sun.

"We were just down for the day," Tom and Pat Rauen of Staten Island, N.Y. said. "We love it. It's peaceful; it's beautiful."

They said escalating gas prices would not affect their trips to the Shore this summer.

"Gas is actually cheaper here," Tom Rauen said.

Jim Sullivan of Long Island, N.Y., agreed gas prices won't be keeping him from frequenting his house in Surf City. more

Sending out an SOS to the world

This week I received an email from a small business sending out an SOS. They are in a cash crunch - and they went straight to their customers to help them out. Offering an SOS sale, the business owners were frank and honest about the reasons why.

Their email stated:

"Dear Customer,

This is an SOS to ALL Customers ... and a very important email.

We haven't had to put in a CALL TO ACTION like this for over 3 years (the last time was in April 2005); but the fact of the matter is ... we're experiencing a bit of a mid-year cash crunch, and we need your HELP (again) in order keep the REMO machine moving forward ... surviving & thriving. The founder explains why in Q&A format below; but, in summary, what we're asking you to do is this: put in a BIG order (preferably a VERY BIG order) as soon as you can, even if you feel that you might be stockpiling merchandise and gifts for use later in the year; and include as many T Shirts as possible in that order (we're well stocked). more

Politicos' pensions should pay for mess

All our politicians owe us not an apology but also retribution for the insane debt they have placed on U.S. citizens. I want their pensions to go toward paying the debt.

Pork-barrel spending is our elected officials eating our life's blood, including our governor and mayors doing the same. How can we stop them for our sake, our children's sake and our future generations? We truly need a crusader, and there is no one on the political horizon that I can see. The change we need is to reverse this flow. I need a hero. - Carl Gundersen,Scottsdale
