Proud and patriotic in Porsmouth

Before introducing the keynote speaker, Walton recognized the many dignitaries in attendance and thanked them for their support.

During the keynote message, Special Assistant Tom Brovarone of the United States Navy spoke about the generations of Americans who have answered the call to serve their country.

Having recently returned from a special assignment in Iraq with the US. Army Corps, Brovarone was nearly brought to tears as he reflected on the many lives lost during the conflict as well as many others.

Uganda: How to Buy a New Car

Buying a car needn't be an ordeal; not if you're properly informed before you set out.

This should be the easy part, certainly the most fun. Yet, many buyers feel insecure right up to the moment they enter a showroom. Who can blame them? With so many models available and new ones arriving all the time, it's difficult keeping up with the changes, let alone making a decision.

Vodafone raises client numbers by 9% to 2.7m in Q1

Chief executive Muriel Anton said Vodafone's growth in the last quarter proves that innovative solutions, such as mobile advertising and converged offer for companies Vodafone OneNet, can attract new clients even on a highly satiated market.

Vodafone's rival Telefonica O2 raised user numbers by 6.6 percent to 5.16 million. T-Mobile, the leader on the Czech market, had 5.273 million clients at end-March, an increase of 3.2 percent year-on-year.

There are more than 13 million active mobile phones in the Czech Republic, with around 126 phone numbers per 100 people.

Tariff clients made up 52 percent of Vodafone's clients in the past quarter. The average revenue per user (ARPU) amounted to Kc581 a month. The value reached Kc484 at T-Mobile and Kc509 at O2. more

BA predicts 'challenging' year ahead for aviation industry

The ensuing problems of the global credit crunch are causing trouble for consumers and businesses alike, and it seems that the aviation industry is not going to escape without experiencing some difficulty.

With fuel prices continuing to rise and the US economy teetering on the verge of a recession, the coming year looks set to be a bumpy ride for airlines.

That is according to British Airways, which has asserted that the current economic climate is going to make the next few months rather difficult for a number of carriers, least of all BA itself.

Chief executive Willie Walsh made his comments earlier this week at an investor presentation in New York, indicating that he believes there will continue to be mergers and bankruptcies this year.

Business Networking Software Questions asked

Open Question: K-Lite Codec pack - how do I ensure I get a trouble free install?

I have an elderly, ex networked, office ASUS computer (a discard) used in a sales admin dept - audio was disabled and the codecs I had to download from ASUS to get audio CDs to play. It does not play video media even though WMP is installed. Couldn't fathom the ASUS website at all as far as the Video codecs were concerned: and they failed to respond to request for advice. I was recommended to install the K-Lite Pack as this will cover practically all requirements and should reactivate WMP as well. Several codecs are listed under audio and video already (including the audio codecs I got from ASUS, but I recognise none of the others. Forums are vague about the actual process of installing a pack with respect to what steps to take when there are codecs already in place albeit not, necessarily all the ones you need. They can be installed selectively but then you have to know (up front) what codecs you MUST have and then, where to get them and then, the tiresome job of installing them individually. I am looking for that 'one shot cures all' solution and the K-Lite Pack looks the business. I did try downloading it on my main (HP) computer, but it only corrupted some of the software already in place. Happily a restore rectified this (I hope) so what indeed is the safest procedure........anybody? Thank you Nearlyman more

Open Question: what training/education do i need to get a job in the IT field?

i currently have a BA in Finance and Business management, but I am having trouble finding a job. i have alway been interested in computers and technology. i often search job openings, and almost always see openings in the IT field. what additional training would i need to break into the field? the local community college offers an associate degree in networking with courses in: pc troubleshooting, repair skills, desktop support, network administration and router/switch configuration. the college also offers a program in software development. the college offers associate degrees and certificates. is this paired with my BA enough to do well in the field, or should i work toward a BS or BA, and potentially a Masters to get to the top of the field? thanks for any help or advice! more

Open Question: Can XML schemas be considered Intellectual Property?

We have a software system that we use to send service orders to our suppliers. The software company entered into an agreement with a value added network (VAN), whereby the VAN acts as the network used to communicate our orders to our suppliers, if we want to send the orders electronically. Otherwise we can print the orders and pack them with the goods to be repaired, and / or send facsimiles of the printed orders. The VAN designed the XML schemas used to mark up the service orders so that they can be sent as EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) documents. The VAN is claiming that the schemas were licensed to the software provider for exclusive use via their portal, and that the business process of exchanging service orders and downstream documents (receipt notices, repair findings, return notices, invoices, etc.) via these schemas are their intellectual property. They only claim IP for the latter in relation to the EDI documents. The actual processes are in fact standard industry practices. They don’t claim any IP rights if we exchange printed documents with our repair providers. In summary, they maintain that we will have infringed on their IP if we bypass their portal to send a service order to a repair provider using the schemas they have developed for software we are licensed to use. Does this web portal have a legitimate claim to Intellectual Property regarding these schemas? more

Voting Question: to the party saying "no" ......care to look into the mirror?

Why cyberspace isn’t, and will never be, nirvana By Clifford Stoll | NEWSWEEK From the magazine issue dated Feb 27, 1995 After two decades online, I’m perplexed. It’s not that I haven’t had a gas of a good time on the Internet. I’ve met great people and even caught a hacker or two. But today, I’m uneasy about this most trendy and oversold community. Visionaries see a future of telecommuting workers, interactive libraries and multimedia classrooms. They speak of electronic town meetings and virtual communities. Commerce and business will shift from offices and malls to networks and modems. And the freedom of digital networks will make government more democratic. Baloney. Do our computer pundits lack all common sense? The truth in no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works. Consider today’s online world. The Usenet, a worldwide bulletin board, allows anyone to post messages across the nation. Your word gets out, leapfrogging editors and publishers. Every voice can be heard cheaply and instantly. The result? Every voice is heard. The cacophany more closely resembles citizens band radio, complete with handles, harrasment, and anonymous threats. When most everyone shouts, few listen. How about electronic publishing? Try reading a book on disc. At best, it’s an unpleasant chore: the myopic glow of a clunky computer replaces the friendly pages of a book. And you can’t tote that laptop to the beach. Yet Nicholas Negroponte, director of the MIT Media Lab, predicts that we’ll soon buy books and newspapers straight over the Intenet. Uh, sure. What the Internet hucksters won’t tell you is tht the Internet is one big ocean of unedited data, without any pretense of completeness. Lacking editors, reviewers or critics, the Internet has become a wasteland of unfiltered data. You don’t know what to ignore and what’s worth reading. Logged onto the World Wide Web, I hunt for the date of the Battle of Trafalgar. Hundreds of files show up, and it takes 15 minutes to unravel them–one’s a biography written by an eighth grader, the second is a computer game that doesn’t work and the third is an image of a London monument. None answers my question, and my search is periodically interrupted by messages like, “Too many connectios, try again later.” Won’t the Internet be useful in governing? Internet addicts clamor for government reports. But when Andy Spano ran for county executive in Westchester County, N.Y., he put every press release and position paper onto a bulletin board. In that affluent county, with plenty of computer companies, how many voters logged in? Fewer than 30. Not a good omen. Point and click: Then there are those pushing computers into schools. We’re told that multimedia will make schoolwork easy and fun. Students will happily learn from animated characters while taught by expertly tailored software.Who needs teachers when you’ve got computer-aided education? Bah. These expensive toys are difficult to use in classrooms and require extensive teacher training. Sure, kids love videogames–but think of your own experience: can you recall even one educational filmstrip of decades past? I’ll bet you remember the two or three great teachers who made a difference in your life. Then there’s cyberbusiness. We’re promised instant catalog shopping–just point and click for great deals. We’ll order airline tickets over the network, make restaurant reservations and negotiate sales contracts. Stores will become obselete. So how come my local mall does more business in an afternoon than the entire Internet handles in a month? Even if there were a trustworthy way to send money over the Internet–which there isn’t–the network is missing a most essential ingredient of capitalism: salespeople. What’s missing from this electronic wonderland? Human contact. Discount the fawning techno-burble about virtual communities. Computers and networks isolate us from one another. A network chat line is a limp substitute for meeting friends over coffee. No interactive multimedia display comes close to the excitement of a live concert. And who’d prefer cybersex to the real thing? While the Internet beckons brightly, seductively flashing an icon of knowledge-as-power, this nonplace lures us to surrender our time on earth. A poor substitute it is, this virtual reality where frustration is legion and where–in the holy names of Education and Progress–important aspects of human interactions are relentlessly devalued. Voting Question: What is the best website designing software for my business?

Here's my issue. I am starting a "handyman" business and want to make a website. I know that I can get a domain name from Network Solutions or whatever company I may choose, but I am not sure how to design it. I mainy just want to have my contact information on the website, a spot for people to e-mail me or give me their contact information, maybe have a page of past work that I have done, etc. Is there software that I can get to easily accomplish all of this? Thank you all for your input. more

•We started with the hope and now we are at that crossroad today in which we are equipped with the greatest technological advantages of all time, and still risk whatever we have built over the decades. Regular shift in out technological approach from manual to the automated system, standalone to unified database, traditional software technology to open source technologies, static to dynamic website applications development, in-house development to offshore outsourcing business solutions, and still being economical, advancement in the technologies and infrastructure, equipment, search engine optimization, internet marketing and the rapid increase in the size of the market. Hence, with the ever changing technology and environment it has been not easy to deliver "The Best" and a threat of being obsolete remains. Therfore, the best solution to capture the road to global business marketing is by outsourcing your services to the countries like India who are enriched by rich resources offering cheap, best, reliable and effective business solutions to all its investors this quality has made India the no. one contender for International centre of IT outsourcing increase in the number of investors has lead India to deliver best solutions. Voting Question: I need your opinion on this laptop?

I need to get a good laptop, because I will be running programs like Maya, 3dMax, After Effects, basically a lot of web, animation and also software like fruity loops and Audition for music recording and auditing. I want to run this program without any slugs in the laptop. At this moment I am using an AMD Turion(tm) x2 Dual-Core Mobile rm-72 2.12 ghz with 4gb ddr2. I was thinking about the following laptop from "Ibuypower.com" because I can't seem to find another laptop as strong as this one for the price. Resolved Question: Need software/program for network control?!?!?

I am in need of a program the will give me control over my network. I would like something that will allow me to see what people are doing and allow me to cut the internet to their device/computer and possibly turn the device off remotely from a main computer. They use there programs in schools and businesses and I am in need of one for my small business. I would prefer the program to be under $200. I was using Linksys' network magic but switched over to NetGear products. more

Resolved Question: Need advise, How to get business partners?

Hi, I'm starting a project (hardware and software), still in research and development phase. The software is quite big and wide ( few thousands lines using C++ in network, database and I/O, and PHP/AJAX for the web interface). besides some hardware (electronics) development. 50% of the project is finished now. Now I really need someone to work with me on some software modules, but I can't pay salary because I'm just starting the business. I was thinking of partners or something similar. do you have an Idea how to get some one or some company to work with me to finish this project? do you think payment from profit is something reasonable? Thanks for reading! more

Resolved Question: Which of these courses will give me a better chance of finding a job?

ok. I just recently graduated college with a diploma in general business which really means nothing. So I am going back to school this month and I am not sure what to study. I am thinking of specialising in something like Financial Planning (also a diploma). However I think a lot of people are graduating with degrees in the business field and someone like me with a diploma would not have much of a chance in getting a job. My other option is the Information Technology Applications and Technical Support course. But this is only a 51-week Certificate program. Since its a technical skill I probably have a better chance of getting a job after graduating. What do you guys think? This is the course description if you are interested; "The program will address fundamental skills in a number of areas including operating systems such as Windows and Linux, Health and Safety, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Electrical/Electronics, Soldering, Customer Service, Networking, Computer Maintenance, Job Search, Web Page Design, and Documentation. The graduate will be able to participate in technical conversations, install, configure, and operate standard office software applications and maintain the hardware components of office personal computers. They will be qualified to setup and maintain a standard networking system, create a full document system for tracking hardware/software and service calls, control and safety measures, and be capable of training staff. They would also learn how to design and maintain interactive web sites. In some of the program courses, students follow the curriculum from the International Computer Driving Licence program. Those students who successfully pass the ICDL examinations will receive International Computer Driving Licence Certificates from ICDL." more

Voting Question: Should I go to university and get a degree or apply for apprenticeship or take a course for certification?

Im a student studying computer science at kings college london. Started at 2007 to graduate at 2010 but due to family issues have been set back and so am still in 2nd year. However i'm no longer interested in the course and currently thinking about my various options. I've been into computers and related fields since I was about 8 years old and happen to be very good at such topics so I know I still want to be in this field. I've come to the conclusion that i'd like to eventually start a business of my own so right now I need to know what would be most appropriate for me. On the one hand I could study something like computer engineering or software engineering, but perhaps thats too "technical" and less business orientated? Maybe an IT degree would be better? While I have a lot to learn I am very competent at what I do know (building computers, configuring software, programming Java and C#, networking including making my own wired home server cutting CAT5e cables, heck i've even replaced my home telephone wiring with CAT5e cables! Also gotten into satellite technology as well). The problem is I have no clue about business such as marketing, finance etc so maybe a business degree is what I need? On the other hand I could just drop uni altogether and apply for some kind of apprenticeship, or else take some courses to get certified in Cisco or Microsoft? So yeah, does anyone have any experience/suggestions/advice on this topic? I need to decide soon since UCAS deadline is approaching! Thanks!I appreciate people telling me to stick to uni, which i dont mind, however as said, if i go to uni it would have to be a different uni in a different course since this course is just not right for me. So for all those who say I should stick to uni which course do you think is most appropriate? (in computing field with eventual goal of starting a business) more

Resolved Question: Setting Up A Network of 20 PC's - HELP!?

I would like to set up 20 PC's in a standard classroom at a business I am setting up for training short courses and internet. I really need advise on the best way to set this up. I am thinking on the lines of client/server with a separate email server, I haven't yet decided on the topology and whether I will also need a gateway for this setup. I am more of a software guru than I am network, so 10 points for the best piece of advice! Also, is it advisable to set this up as wireless internet or the traditional router based internet?Yes Steve, this is a new company. I already have the PC's , P4's with a standard configuration (80 Gig, 512Mb MMS, Lan, modems, Win XP). I would like an ethernet network that is expandable in the near future and that can connect to the admin office which is in the next room that currently has 3 stand alone P4's. There is no internet connection yet, but I want to set up the internet in such a way as to connect with the Admin section for email purposes, so I'm not sure if I would need a separate email server or I can use the same base server. Company LAN I think is most appropriate as I am considering expansion in the near future but for now, I will be training accounting packages, basic Windows, Internet and basic programming classes like VB, SQL. I have heard of ADSL routers and they sound good, but I'm not too sure if I can use it in this case. more

And, would there be any problems with these specs? ager NP8690 (Built on Clevo W860CU) Custom Gaming Laptop - 15.6” HD+ 16:9 LED Backlit Wide screen (1600x900) with Super Clear Glare Type Screen ETA Early October - Standard Dead Pixel Policy - Intel® Core™ i7-820QM, 1.60-2.80GHz, (45nm, 6MB L3 cache) - Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - nVidia GeForce GTX 280M 1,024MB PCI-Express GDDR3 DX10 (User Upgradeable) - No External Graphics Card - No Video Adapter - ~ 4,096MB DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS) (Requires Vista 64-Bit to utilize Full 4GB) - Standard Finish - ~Combo 8x8x6x4x Dual Layer DVD +/-R/RW 5x DVD-RAM 24x CD-R/RW Drive w/Softwares - ~ 250GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 8MB Cache) - No Back Up Hard Drive - No Floppy Drive - Internal 7-in-1 Card Reader (MS/MS Pro/MS Duo/MS Pro Duo/SD/Mini-SD/MMC/RS) - Internal Bluetooth + EDR - Built-in Intel® PRO/Wireless 5300 802.11 a/g/n Wi-Fi Link - No Network Accessory - Built in 2.0 Megapixel Camera - No TV Tuner - Sound Blaster Compatible 3D Audio - Included - Basic Black Business Case - Included - 11.1V Smart Li-Polymer battery pack 3800mAh, 42.18Wh - No Car Adapter - None Standard* - No Dock/Hub/Adapter - Integrated Fingerprint Reader - No External Keyboard or Mouse - Full Size Black Aluminum Notebook Cooler - Dual Fans - USB Powered (For up to 17" Laptops) - Winows 7 32/64bit Home Premium - Drivers & Utility Software Only - No Office Software - No Software Bundle - 3 Year Labor* 1 Year Parts Warranty Lifetime 24/7 DOMESTIC Based Toll Free Telephone Tech Support (Labor Warranty through Xotic PC) Includes FREE Shipping Both Ways for Warranty Repairs Thanks and Merry Christmas =) MichaelOops, I meant the processor is: i7 820QM @1.73GHz more

Resolved Question: Do I have a chance at becoming a hustler?

I'm in high school right now and I'm located in a country(was U.S.A, right now... in continent of asia) which I suppose has a very bright future, since I was a kid , It was my dream to always end up in a high flying blue collar job somewhere up in Wall Street and slowly become a partner of big firms, but I have so many ambitions, but my wall street dreams deviated once I moved to the land of the software people, I have so much on my mind, I'm currently taking the Business and Commerce stream in my high school and most of my classes are cakewalks for me, I used to flunk half the time in tenth with science and math, I still have math but I mean the Business Studies textbook and Economics textbooks come to me naturally, I dont even have to study for tests and I can ace them, I savour every bit of these books... I'm not an einstein at math so acing the SAT test and landing in some Ivy league is not my priority, it is to me, still a dream. But one great thing I got going for myself right now , sorry if I sound like an oppertunist(hey, told ya I wanted to be a hustler), but right now, I go to one of the most prestigious schools in my city and I have politician's sons as my friends, and construction baron descendants sitting behind my chair, I mean, I know people to can make things happen with a clap. When I get back to the states, I plan to go to a decent B-School and bachelor in accounting, as that is the blood of all forms of business and it would help me become business literate, and then I plan to major in Finance....after that, I plan to become an ERP consultant in case any of my plans dont work as I obviously need a back-up strategy, I will later use the initial salary earned for my ambitions should anything go haywire.....but if the wind is right, I plan to use some of my "connections"(trust me, not petty people, close people too) as my venture capitalists, to start my own soft-drink company, and after a few years, I plan start a construction/real estate company (like TRUMP)and take both of my companies public, eventually I also would like to fullfill my dreams of starting an electric automobile company along with a Insurance company. My dad(who was a small time restuarant owner), has a little idea about my plans, as I told him, but I didn't exactly give him the blueprint I gave you guys even though I think he has an Idea. All I want to know is am I being too overconfident or am I correct about my timing? I consider my self very fortunate to have the right things happen to me so far, its like everything is lined up for me, all I got to do is shoot. I know exactly how hard it is to fulfill dreams, everybody has dreams, only some fulfill it. My mom say isn't exactly pessimistic but she knows me and my network, and I dont think the chances I have aren't something I'm overmining, am I? Let's think about it, sons of politicians, sons of barons as my friends, potential backers, dreams of mine...they can pay for. See, I dont want to act overconfidant and start crying if any of these visions actually get nowhere, but I'm a person who believes in vision, and I wouldn't even rely on just my contacts to get me anywhere, but I can trick a person into buying their own shoes.....Plus I have great managerial skills.... So I'm being optimistic. Is everything in my favour? more

Voting Question: A home-business file server question?

If I've connected a Professional File Server device (such as this one: http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=11248) to a small home business based network, do I need server software...? (We are running a couple of iMac computers along with one PC desktop in our home office at the present time.) Is there any advantage to having server software in place in association with such a situation (e.g. Mac server software)? Or is it unnecessary...? more

Resolved Question: Decade Old question: I need a computer, is Mac worth it? lol?

So this is the story, I own a Dell Insperon (not sure of the model) and it recently broke down to such a level that it wont turn on, has a blue screen of death (BSOD), wont allow me to reload Windows Vista, or repair the computer, and has smoke coming out of it. So Being the dipshit that I am, I went and called Dell customer service, and as everyone knows is a pain. The guy was okay, helped me out somewhat but in the end my computer went six feet under. Now I feel like a fish out of water (again) just like I was a few years ago. So Simply, put I need a new computer. I was looking at the Mac Book Pro 17' Screen and I was pretty pleased with what I saw, its looks cool, has what I want, and I am an owner of an Iphone. Mac owners that I know are pretty pleased, but others I talk to are very negative about it. My friends recommend I get another Dell, (not happening) toshiba (Maybe) or a Alienware. I looked these up and Alienware is a gaming computer, Ofcourse it does have some of the most advanced drivers and graphic cards. All I need my computer to do is handle my music and College. I need a computer for Itunes with alot of memory and processor power for the burning, loading etc. that is fast and efficient, long life span, not alot of hassles and has the standard things like Microsoft word, Excel, Power Points, etc. I customized the Alienware and it came put to about $4000 and some change. The Mac costs around $2400. PLEASE HELP ME@@@! lol. I need to figure this out before the holidays.
