Shiny Metal Objects

Now, as a business owner with a different focus, I'm wondering if it's worth the effort.

The new business prospects I'm talking to don't care how many Addys or Andys or 4A's awards we've won. Most don't know what an Addy, Andy or 4A's award is. What they do know is that they need marketing help. And not even, necessarily, advertising help. They care about ROI. And they want to know if we have our finger on the pulse of Web 2.0 and can help them invest their marketing dollars wisely.

As consumer buying habits change, and the media changes, and traditional ads lose the impact they once had, clients are taking a more critical look at ad agencies. When judging an agency, the questions that most clients are asking are not "How many awards have you won?" and "What does the 4A's think of you?" but "What's your experience with social media?" and "How can we take advantage of it?"

Compact car rentals soar

Compact cars are becoming the most popular way to travel, especially as gas prices increase and airlines make fare hikes and increase fuel surcharges. The surge in demand means that travellers who fail to make advance bookings may be left with gas guzzling land yachts.

Enterprise began offering 50 per cent off weekend rentals from participating American locations, leading to a severe shortage of compact cars.

Budget Rent-A Car is in a similar situation. According to Abraham Rodriquez, the manager of the company's central reservations centre in Los Angeles, more and more locations can't keep up with the soaring demand for compact and subcompact cars. To try and keep up the company is trying to bring in more compact cars into the fleet. "We're bringing in more small cars," he said. more

Cobra raises the volume in new campaign

Cobra is to launch an £8.4 million integrated advertising campaign with the strapline “Now you're talking".

The campaign was devised by Joshua G2 and focuses on the fact Cobra is not a gassy beer so does not impede conversation. The intention is to broaden awareness that the brand is now available in the on-trade.

The advertising activity embraces outdoor, press, cinema and online with television spots to appear later in the year. The first element to be unveiled will be outdoor advertisements on London Underground escalator panels followed by telephone boxes and taxi sides.

There's a bad moon rising

At African Bank (JSE: ABL), where microloans and retail loans to low-income individuals make up the vast majority of the company's business, there are warning signs that indicate not all's well in the world of the low-income consumer.

The Abil group is divided into two parts: African Bank and Ellerines, following the acquisition of Ellerines in January this year. Both arms of the business target low-income consumers. The bank offers low-income consumers short- to medium-term personal loans, while Ellerines sells furniture, offering both cash and credit sales.

As low-income consumers start to feel the pinch of interest rates and inflation, they are shopping less and defaulting more, a double whammy for a business like Abil. Nevertheless, the group performed well. more
