Vista struggles to bust out as business customers snub it

Indeed, analyst Allan Krans of Technology Business Research attributes the weaker quarterly sales results in Microsoft's Windows division to enterprises putting off Vista upgrades.

Sales of Windows XP were up 10.5% at a similar period a year after its launch, he says. "XP found better reception from enterprise."

Microsoft says a recent update — Service Pack 1 — addressed most of the compatibility issues. "People need to look at Vista today," says Kevin Kutz, director of Microsoft's Windows client division. "We think people will have a great experience."

Still, UPS' WorldShip software — used by 550,000 of its small-business clients to ship packages to customers — doesn't work with Vista. (UPS says it will start supporting Vista by summer.)

Similarly, FedEx's Ship Manager software doesn't work with Vista. more

Dycom Q3 earnings down South Florida Business Journal

The Palm Beach Gardens-based specialty contractor said it earned $6.9 million, or 17 cents a share, on revenue of $293.4 million. In the prior-year quarter, the company earned $12.4 million, or 31 cents a share, on revenue of $291.6 million.

Dycom (NYSE: DY) reported adjusted earnings from continuing operations, excluding certain one-time gains and other items, of $5.5 million, or 14 cents a share, down from $11.1 million, or 27 cents a share, in the third quarter of 2007.

For the fourth quarter, Dycom expects earnings from continuing operations between 18 cents and 23 cents a share, including pretax stock-based compensation expense of about $1.1 million. It estimates revenue between $305 million and $325 million.

In a separate release, Dycom said it authorized a program to buy back up to $15 million of its stock. more

Retailers are feeling the pinch of slow sales with shopping centre vacancy rates on the rise, according to major shopping centre landlord Westfield.

Following the group’s annual meeting, joint managing director Steven Lowy confirmed a slowing but said the group was strong enough to withstand a downturn. "There has been a slight increase in arrears amongst tenants, more so in the United States, but also in Australia. These events are expected but we are well positioned to ride out these conditions." The group has 23,000 tenants in their global operations. Lowy noted that there was enough diversity in that number to endure a further decrease in consumer expenditure.

You can claim a tax offset of up to 25 per cent of the income tax attributable to the income you receive from the business.

What's more, you can claim the tax offset even if you earn significant income outside your business - but not for long.

The offset is aimed at giving a leg-up to fledgling businesses though Greco says it is currently of most value to people with salary or investment income who start a small business on the side.

This is because the offset is worked out using their marginal tax rate. The more you earn outside the business, the more you can claim.

The Government announced in the budget that it will close this loophole next financial year, when it will apply an income test. Individuals with adjusted taxable income of more than $75,000, and families with income of more than $120,000, will not be eligible for the entrepreneurs' tax offset, even if their business turnover is less than $75,000. more
