Attacks mark a ‘shameful episode’ in SA history

Business leaders have condemned the spate of xenophobic attacks that have claimed more than 50 lives since the hate crimes began in Johannesburg two weeks ago.

At the weekend, the police and the army began raiding hostels at which many of the attacks are believed to have been planned.

A high-powered delegation of business leaders, which included Transnet chief executive Maria Ramos, SA Property Owners’ Association chief executive Neil Gopal, and Business Unity heavyweights Bobby Godsell and Jerry Vilakazi, met last week to assess the security situation in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.

“The property industry and the business community as a whole condemn the violence unfolding in South Africa,” said Gopal. more

FBI nabs two in Romanian fraud ring

Tran, Tath and other members of the ring would then use the cards to purchase goods at stores and cull money from ATMs and cash registers, according to the indictment. The couple and the other members of the ring would keep a percentage of the profits and wire the rest back to their associates in Romania, the indictment claims.Investigators found evidence the couple actively communicated with people in Romania at the time of Tath’s arrest in the couple’s hotel room at the Wyndham Sunday, Mrozek said."Investigators found computers up and running with a live chat going on with people in Romania — we believe it was part of the scheme they are accused of," Mrozek said.Three others believe to be involved in the scheme have been arrested across Southern California during the past day on federal racketeering charges.Federal officials allege members of the ring operated from locations in the United States and abroad, including Canada, Pakistan, Portugal and Romania. more

Fish farmer wants room to expand

FOR 18 months Rudy Sookdeo has been rearing red tilapia in a farm that he built in his backyard, and he hopes to expand his business and help to feed the nation.

Last week the 43-year-old farmer showed the Express thousands of young tilapia, or fingerlings, and hundreds of adult tilapia swimming in concrete troughs that he designed and built himself at his Bamboo Settlement, Valsayn home.

He runs the business with his wife and son, and currently supplies the fish to a marina in Chaguaramas.

But in a situation of limited space more is not merrier, as Sookdeo explained "the more fish in a tank the less they breed. "He has currently run out of space in his small backyard and is seeking support from Government to access an acre of land to expand his business. more

Business Intelligence Software Questions asked

Resolved Question: Did those involved understand whether the changes they were making to Collins software were good or bad ?

Is Good Code Impossible This blog seems to have sparked a little bit of backlash towards me as if I were an irresponsible developer making things worse on my peers. I assure you, it’s not true. Sometimes, in business, we have to be willing to accept a little more work than we’d like or a little more hardship in general to gain something back. What was gained from the client was (A) good notoriety for having worked with them and (B) the promise of a longer and more lucrative Phase II. In all things, there is give and take. We gave as much as took. – When you hit your teenage years you decide you want to be a software developer. During your high school years, you learn how to write software using object-oriented principles. When you graduate to college, you apply all the principles you’ve learned to areas such as Artificial Intelligence or 3D graphics. And when you hit the professional circuit, you begin your never-ending quest to write commercial-quality, maintainable, and “perfect” code that will stand the test of time. Commercial-quality. Huh. That’s pretty funny. I consider myself lucky, I *love* design patterns. I like studying the theory of coding perfection. I have no problem starting up an hour-long discussion about why my XP partner’s choice of inheritance hierarchy is wrong — that HAS-A is better than IS-A in so many cases. But something has been bugging me lately and I am wondering something… …is good code impossible in modern software development? The Typical Project Proposal As a full-time contract developer (and part-time), I spend my days (and nights) developing mobile applications for clients. And what I’ve learned over the many years I’ve been doing this is that the demands of client work preclude me from writing the real quality apps that I’d like to be. Before I begin, let me just say it’s not for a lack of trying. I love the topic of clean code. I don’t know anyone who pursues that perfect software design like I do. It’s the execution that I find more elusive, and not for the reason you think. Here, let me tell you a story. Towards the end of last year, a pretty well-known company put out an RFP (Request for Proposol) to have an app built for them. They’re a huge retailer, but for the sake of anonymity let’s call them Gorilla Mart. They say they need to create an iPhone presence and would like an app produced for them by Black Friday. The catch? It’s already November 1st. That leaves just under 4 weeks to create the app. Oh, and at this time Apple is still taking two weeks to approve apps. (Ah, the good old days.) So, wait, this app has to be written in…TWO WEEKS?!?! Yes. We have two weeks to write this app. And unfortunately, we’ve won the bid. (In business, client importance matters.) This is going to happen. “But it’s OK,” Gorilla Mart Executive #1 says. “The app is simple. It just needs to show users a few products from our catalog and let them search for store locations. We already do it on our site. We’ll give you the graphics, too. You can probably — what’s the word — yeah, hardcode it!” Gorilla Mart Executive #2 chimes in, “And we just need a couple coupons the user can show at the cash register. The app will be a throwaway. Let’s get it out the door, and then for Phase II we’ll do something bigger and better from scratch.” And then it’s happening. Despite years of constant reminders that every feature a client asks for will always be more complex to write than it is to explain, you go for it. You really believe that this time, it really can be done in two weeks. Yes. Yes! We can do this! This time it’s different! It’s just a few graphics and a service call to get a store location. XML! No sweat. We can do this…I’m pumped! Let’s go!!! It takes just a day for you and reality to once again make acquaintance. Me: So, can you give me the info I need to call your store location Web Service? The Client: What’s a Web Service? Me: ……….. And that’s exactly how it happened. Their store location service, found right where it’s supposed to be on the top-right corner of their website, is not a web service. It’s generated by Java code. Ixnay with the API-ay. And to boot, it’s hosted by a Gorilla Mart strategic partner. Enter the nefarious “3rd party.” In client terms, a “3rd party” is akin to Angelina Jolie. Despite the promise that you’ll be able to have an enlightening conversation over a nice meal and hopefully hook up afterwards…sorry, it ain’t happenin’. You’re just gonna have to fantasize about it while you take care of business yourself. In my case, the only thing I was able to wrestle out of Gorilla Mart was a current snapshot of their current store listings in an Excel file. I had to write the store location search code from scratch. The double-whammy came later that day — they wanted the product and coupon data online so it could be changed weekly. There goes hardcoding! Two weeks to write an iPhone app have now be...come two weeks to write an iPhone app, a PHP backend, and integrate them togeth–what? They want me to handle QA, too?? To make up for the extra work, the coding will have to go a little faster. Forget that abstract factory, use a big fat for loop instead of the composite, there’s no time!!!! Good code has become impossible. Two Weeks To Completion Let me tell you, that two weeks was pretty miserable. First, two of the days were eliminated due to all-day meetings for my next project. (That amplifies how short a timeframe this was going to be.) Ultimately, I really had eight days to get things done. The first week I worked 74 hours and the next week…god…I don’t even recall it’s been eradicated from my synapses. Probably a good thing. I spent those eight days writing code in a fury. I used all the tools available to me to get it done: copy-and-paste (AKA re-usable code), magic numbers (avoiding the duplication of defining constants and then, gasp!, retyping them), andabsolutely NO unit tests! (Who needs red bars at a time like this, it’d just demotivate me!) It was pretty bad code and I never had time to refactor. Considering the timeframe, however, it was actually pretty stellar, and it was “throwaway” code after all, right? Does any of this sound familiar? Well just wait, it gets better. As I was putting the final touches on the app (the final touches being writing the entirety of the server code), I started to look at the codebase and wondered if maybe it was worth it. The app was done after all. I survived. I SURVI- “Hey, we just hired Bob, and he’s very busy and he couldn’t make the call, but he says we should be requiring users to provide their email addresses to get the coupons. He hasn’t seen the app, but he thinks this would be a great idea! We also want a reporting system to get those emails from the server. One that’s nice and not too expensive. (Wait, that last part was Monty Python.) Speaking of coupons, they need to be ableto expire after a number of days we specify. Oh, and…” Let’s step back. What do we know about what good code is? Good code should be extendable. Maintainable. It should lend itself to modification. It should read like prose. Well, this wasn’t good code. Another thing. If you want to be a better developer, you must always keep this inevitably in mind: The client will always extend the deadline. They will always want more features. They will always want change — LATE. And here’s the formula for what to expect: (# of Executives)2 + 2 * # of New Executives + Bob’s Kids = DAYS ADDED AT LAST MINUTE Now, Executives are decent people. I think. They provide for their family (assuming Satan has approved of their having one.) They want the app to succeed (promotion time!). The problem is that they all want a direct claim to the project’s success. When all is said and done, they all want to point at some feature or design decision they can each call their very own. So, back to thestory, we added a couple more days to the project and got the email feature done. And then I collapsed from exhaustion. The Clients Never Care As Much As You Do The clients, despite their protestations, despite their apparent urgency, never care as much as you do about the app being on time. The afternoon that I dubbed the app completed, I sent an email with the final build to all the stakeholders, Executives (hiss!), managers and so on. “IT IS DONE! I BRING YOU V1.0!!! PRAISE THY NAME.” I hit Send, lay back in my chair and with a smug grin began to fantasize how the company would run me up onto their shoulders and lead a procession down 42nd street while I was crowned “Greatest Developer Ev-ar.” At the very least, my face would be on all their advertising, right? Funny, they didn’t seem to agree. In fact, I wasn’t sure what they thought. I heard nothing. Not a peep. Turns out the folks at Gorilla Mart were eager to and had already moved on to the next thing. You think I lie?I pushed to the Apple Store without filling in an app description. I had requested one from Gorilla Mart and they hadn’t gotten back to me and there was no time to wait. (See previous paragraph.) I wrote them again. And again. I got some of our own management on it. Twice I heard back and twice I was told, “What did you need again?” I NEED THE APP DESCRIPTION! One week later, Apple started testing the app. This is usually a time of joyousness but it was instead a time for mortal dread. As expected, later in the day the app was rejected. It was about the saddest, poorest excuse to allow a rejection I can imagine: “App is missing an app description.” Functionally perfect; no app description. And for this reason Gorilla Mart didn’t have their app ready for Black Friday. I was pretty upset. I’d sacrificed my family for a 2-week super sprint, and no one at Gorilla Mart could be bothered to create an app description given a week of time. They gave it to us an hour after the rejection —apparently that was the signal to get down to business. If I was upset before, I would become livid a week and a half after that. You see, they still hadn’t gotten us real data. The products and coupons on the server were fake. Imaginary. The coupon code was 1234567890. You know, phoney baloney. (Balogna is spelled baloney when used in that context, BTW.) And it was that fateful morning, I checked the Portal and THE APP WAS AVAILABLE! Fake data and all! I cried out in abject horror and called up whoever I could and screamed, “I NEED THE DATA!!!!” and the woman on the other end asked me if I needed fire or police and so I hung up on 911. But then I called Gorilla Mart and was like, “I NEED DATA!!!!” and I’ll never forget the response: Oh, hey there John. We have a new VP and we’ve decided not to release. Pull it off the App Store, would you? In the end, it turned out that at least 11 people registered their email addresses in the database, which meant there were 11 peoplethat could potentially walk into a Gorilla Mart with a fake iPhone coupon in tow. Boy, that might get ugly. When it was all said and done, the client had said one thing correctly all along: the code was a throwaway. The only problem is it was never released in the first place. Rush To Complete, Slow To Market The lesson here is that your stakeholders, whether an external client or internal management, have figured out how to get developers to write code quickly. Effectively? No. Quickly? Yes. Here’s how it works: Tell the developer the app is simple. This serves to pressure the development team into a false frame of mind. It also gets the developers to start working earlier, whereby they… Add features by faulting the team for not recognizing their necessity. In this case, the hardcoded content was going to require app updates to change. How could I not realize that? I did, but I’d been handed a false promise earlier, that’s why. Or a client will hire “a new guy” who’srecognized there is some obvious omission. One day a client will say they just hired Steve Jobs and can we add alchemy to the app? Then they’ll… Push the deadline. Over and over. Developers work their fastest and hardest (and BTW are at their most error-prone, but who cares about that, right?) with a couple days to go on a deadline. Why tell them you can push the date out further while they’re being so productive? Take advantage of it! And so it goes, a few days are added, a week is added, just when you had worked a 20-hour shift to get everything just right. It’s like a donkey and carrot, except you’re not treated as well as the donkey. It’s a brilliant playbook. Can you blame them for thinking it works? But they don’t see the god-awful code. And so it happens time and again despite the results. Code Impossible In a globalized economy, where corporations are held to the almighty dollar and raising the stock price involves layoffs, overworked staffs, and offshoring, thisstrategy I’ve shown you of cutting developer costs is making good code obsolete. As developers, we’re going to be asked told conned into writing twice the code in half the time if we’re not careful. What can we do about it?Your Code Sucks There's no quick way to tell if code is good or bad without understanding the entire solution. 07/29/2010 Your Code Sucks A very good friend of mine is in the midst of an avalanche of work. He has a lot of open contracts, and has been abandoned by a fellow developer that was helping him with his workload. So, with three huge clients breathing down his neck he has been working non stop for weeks now. One client contacted him about the iPad application he is building for them, he let him know "I paid another developer to look at your code, he says it really sucks." When he told me this story, I had to chuckle a bit, and think of all the times I had decided that other people's code sucked. When I first started out, and I looked at code that definitely sucked hard, I scrapped it, and started from scratch in a way I knew was way better. As I matured I looked back and realized that what I had destroyed was a well accepted design pattern, and what Icreated was a mess of a mess pattern. Lesson learned. After some growth I encountered code that I thought sucked ever so often. At this point I wasn't decimating things all together, I would find specific parts of code that I found intolorable and rewrite it. About 9 times out of 10, when I got more than halfway there I'd run into an issue that made me say "Ooooh, that's why they did it that way" and revert it or use the same "sucky" logic with my syntax. Now that I am a little more seasoned, I can tell you with all confidence that I never look at a solution that someone else created and say "Oh, this code sucks." I know that there really is no quick way to tell if code is good or bad without understanding the entire solution. Sure, sometimes things can look sloppy, or poorly done, or undocumented (in my case, not self documenting), however, you never know what was going through the head of the developer that wrote it. More often than not there is a reason why they havedone things this way, and there is no hard and fast way to tell what the context is without being elbow deep in it. So, when I hear that someone has looked at someone else's code base and determined that it sucked I smile and remember what it was like to be so new and sure of myself. So sure that I was an amazing developer, and that I knew what was best in every problematic situation. I miss that swagger, but I appreciate what I have learned, and that is the only person's code that sucks is my own, and the reason why it sucks is I just haven't learned how to make it better yet. more

Resolved Question: Conservatives, in this hypothetical Presidential primary, who would you vote for?

Our hypothetical candidate, Ben Harper, is an Ivy League educated scholar who has made a bloody fortune by starting his own software firm. He then ventured into politics, where he served several exemplary terms in the Senate and Governor of a large state. Fiscally, he's about as conservative as one can get. He favors the flat tax or the "fair" tax, whichever one is fine with him. He is very pro-business and anti-regulation. He's very hawkish on foreign policy and his nose deep in the rear of Israel. He wants to privatize Social Security. He favors the Balanced Budget Amendment and has said that addressing debt will the number one priority of his administration. Throughout his political career, he's been a strong advocate of 2nd Amendment rights and has received an A+ rating from the NRA. However, he's a bleeding heart liberal on just about every social issue imaginable. He's staunchly pro-choice. He's announced his intent to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and believes the right to marry is Constitutional and thus beyond the authority of the states. He's very pro-immigration. In his past, he's made several public, disparaging, almost derisive comments about the absurdity of religion and openly questioned the intelligence of people who are believers. Knowing that, would you vote for him or Sara Palin in this hypothetical Republican Primary? more

Resolved Question: Copyright, Civil Liberties, Emigration, and Computer Science?

I am an undergraduate student at a major American four-year university, where I study Computer Science in my Senior year. I am preparing to graduate on-time and with a GPA of approximately 3.4. I am highly involved in academia and extra-curricular research. I have a genuine passion for the subject matter, which is not reflected in my still-respectable grades. I am particularly interested in the fields of cryptography and data security, and intend to do research with my professors my senior year, and hopefully publish, which is not something every undergraduate student can say. I have no intentions of leaving the academic environment yet. I am simply learning too much and "having too much fun", if you will (and I don't mean partying, either). I have no desire to leave this environment for a stagnant middle-class work-force employment, and thus am preparing to apply to various institutions in pursuit of my Masters. This is the largest crossroads I have reached in my life, and I intend to utilize it to the fullest. Looking around me, I am extremely disillusioned with the current American lifestyle. I can look out my window every morning in the middle of rush-hour and see grid-locked cars for as far as the eye can see in every direction, all at a dead stop, and no reasonable public transportation alternatives, thanks to the big oil corporations that seem to run our country. Driving is terrible, dangerous, stressful, and I do not enjoy it. I wish I didn't even have to own a car, let alone drive it every day, but it seems this society has evolved in such a way that you cannot be perceived as a successful, well-rounded individual without owning a giant gas-guzzler. I'm watching the giant corporations that have built this country out-source all their labor overseas, leaving our citizens bereft of gainful employment. Then these same businesses declare bankruptcy, abandoning what employees they have left, while their CEO's pleasantly depart with multi-million dollar personal severances. I'm watching the average intelligence of the American citizen steadily decline, fed by the constant stream of fear-mongering, FUD, and mindlessly stupid "entertainment" that's spoon-fed to them by American media. I'm watching the government slowly and inexorably violate every one of our civil liberties and constitutional freedoms in the name of keeping us safe. I'm watching laws get proposed and passed without objection that would treat us like criminals, criminals that are guilty until proven innocent. More relevantly, I'm watching my peers, those who are genuinely passionate about things like free and open-source software, freedom of information, and effective transparent security, muscled out of the industry by the posturing and threats of the MPAA and the RIAA. I'm watching copyright law and the DMCA slowly strangulate the innovation and freely-discussed invention that has carried technology this far. I don't want to live in, or raise children in, this environment. I'm done. This game sucks. I want out. I am looking to utilize this opportunity to apply to earn a Masters degree overseas in another country, and hopefully find a way to stay. I will admit to not being as worldly as I would like, and am seeking guidance as to where to begin my search. I am seeking a country with a flourishing and prosperous technological industry, with major academic institutions that are very active in Computer Science research and development, and are adequately funded. I am seeking a country with a robust public transportation system and, I would imagine, the relatively low percentage of car ownership that comes along with that. I am seeking a country with the copyright law and civil liberties protections that will become more and more relevant to my personal prosperity as I continue in the field of cryptography and mathematics. I am seeking a country with an accessible and reasonable process by which I may one day hope to become a citizen. I have previously taken classes in Latin, Spanish, and Japanese, and have found myself with a natural aptitude for learning other languages, although I never persisted in any of them long enough to develop an extensive vocabulary. I am prepared now, however, to seriously learn a second language, whatever language that is. I am seeking guidance on countries to consider, languages to begin learning, schools to apply to, the process that is necessary to study abroad, skills to acquire that will prove useful, any American or foreign legal processes that are best initiated as soon as possible, and any other relevant recommendations to what is going to be the largest decision of my life. more

Resolved Question: Were con men involved in any safety-critical software projects ?

<<Confidence trick From Wikipedia A confidence trick or confidence game (also known as a bunko, con, flim flam, gaffle, grift, hustle, scam, scheme, or swindle) is an attempt to defraud a person or group by gaining their confidence. History The first known usage of the term "confidence man" in English was in 1849; it was used by American press during the United States trial of William Thompson. Thompson chatted with strangers until he asked if they had the confidence to lend him their watches, whereupon he would walk off with the watch; he was captured when a victim recognized him on the street. Vulnerability to confidence tricks Persons of any level of intelligence are vulnerable to deception by experienced con artists. Confidence tricks exploit human weaknesses like greed, dishonesty, vanity, but also virtues like honesty, compassion, or a naïve expectation of good faith on the part of the con artist. Just as there is no typical profile for swindlers, neither is there one for their victims. Virtually anyone can fall prey to fraudulent crimes. … Certainly victims of high-yield investment frauds may possess a level of greed which exceeds their caution as well as a willingness to believe what they want to believe. However, not all fraud victims are greedy, risk-taking, self-deceptive individuals looking to make a quick dollar. Nor are all fraud victims naive, uneducated, or elderly. Confidence tricksters often rely on the greed and dishonesty of the mark, who may attempt to out-cheat the con artist, only to discover that he or she has been manipulated into losing from the very beginning. This is such a general principle in confidence tricks that there is a saying among con men that "you can't cheat an honest man." Becoming especially common since the advent of the internet, a known scam is sending the victim a worthless check, which the victim then deposits. The victim is then urged to forward the apparent value of the check to the trickster as cash, possibly keeping a small portion of the money as a commission, which they may do before discovering the check bounces. A variation of this scenario has the victim recruited as a "financial agent" to collect "business debts." Paper checks are not always involved: funds may be transferred electronically from another victim. Sometimes con men rely on naive individuals who put their confidence into get-rich-quick schemes, such as "too good to be true" investments. It may take years for the wider community to discover that such investment schemes are bogus. By the time they are discovered, many people may have lost their life savings to something in which they have been persuaded to invest. The confidence trickster often works with one or more accomplices called shills, who help manipulate the mark into accepting the con man's plan. Resolved Question: I speak Farsi, born in Tehran, Iran and have lived abroad, should I apply to the CIA?

I was born in Tehran, Iran, lived there, as well as all over Europe for a while, before moving to the US and becoming a US citizen. I recently obtained a bachelors degree in business, and have a very prominent job managing protective intelligence programs for a very prominent person (private sector) as I have spent my entire life doing this type of work. I have also designed and implemented electronic security systems and have great technical skiills (programming, databases, software, hardware, etc.). I have entertained the idea of applying to the CIA for a Clandestine Service job, though I am not sure if I will be accepted. I was arrested for a misdermeanor when I was 16, though I went through a diversion program and never went to trial, never was convicted of a crime, charges were dismissed. The record of my arrest was removed. I don't know if that will hurt my chances. more

Resolved Question: I am thinking about trying to join the Navy when I get out of college, but I have a few questions?

Alright, first a little background on my education. I am currently 18 years old, computers have always been a huge part of my life. I know my way around Windows very well, I have been leaning/using C++ since I was 14 years old and I have been working with Linux environments for the past two years. High school always bored me to death. I sat in class learning the same thing over and over and most of my class time I was sitting there thinking about programming, OS structures, networks etc. Now, my senior year I made a mistake, I felt I had enough of the boredom and criticism from teachers and dropped out. A few months later I enrolled in a program at a local community college to help high school drop outs get their degree's providing financial aid and career guidance to get through school. Once I obtain my associates degree I plan to get my GED and try to join the Navy note, try. I read on the Navy's website that you need a high school diploma to join or in certain, rare cases they will accept people with a GED. Do you think in my case they would allow me to join? Second, This semester is when student's in this program are required to plan for their degree, if I join the Navy out of college (assuming they will let me) I would like to work towards becoming an Information Warfare Officer. Will the Navy allow me to work towards this goal assuming I have an associates degree and a GED and what type of degree should I study for if I plan to do this? The AA degrees open to me (In computers/IT) are: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- -Network Services and Computing Systems -Information Systems on a Business Intelligence, Database Administration or Software Development Track Any input would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.  more

Resolved Question: Canadians.....Is Canada a nice place to live?

If Obama is elected I fully plan on moving. I am a software developer in business intelligence.......think I'll find suitable employment up there? Are Americans welcomed in your communities? How cold does it get on your southern borders? My wife likes the idea of winter snow (we're in Texas) but I think negative temperatures are a bit too cold. Anyway, I'm interested in your thoughts.Just to clarify folks.....the reason for looking at this change actually has little to do with the conservative vs liberal argument. The reality is that Obama and people like him want democracy only as long as it supports them and their bank account....not a true democracy. If he is elected, I really feel that the last true democracy will be demolished, leaving no opportunity for our future in the U.S. So, why not see the world...and I have heard that Canada can be quite nice. more

Voting Question: Scope of Microsoft Certification...MCTS: SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence?

I did my BCS in computers almost 7 years back and since then I am working as a data analyst in Canada, which is more inclined towards Business than Computers itself… my function involves analysing data trends using Excel and Power point than any fancy tools/software… While analysing recent market trend, I’ve noticed that IT pay scale is higher than Business one… So, I am thinking of going through certification to polish my skills to assist me in career advancement… Since I’ve been associated with data mining, I believe certification in database would be a right choice (I don’t want to be a DBA – though there is nothing wrong with it, but it’s not my preference)… I’ve noticed MCTS: SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence is the easiest one to conquer as it requires only one exam… Please advice how would you rate this certification by keeping in view A) Future and current demand for this certification and C) would I be required to do some other courses/certificaitons e.g ASP more

Resolved Question: Discuss the markets that these vendors are targeting.?

Big-name business applications vendors—Microsoft, Oracle, Lawson and (on the business intelligence front) Cognos each made a splash with new software announcements at the National Retail Federation's Big Show event in New York on Jan. 16. The bevy of new offerings could help businesses in the retail sector move forward with electronic initiatives. Microsoft, for example, announced the 2.0 version of its Dynamics POS (Point of Sale) suite of software aimed at making it easier for retailers to extend their storefront online with such functionality as online invoicing and the ability to link to PayPal and eBay marketplace selling. POS 2.0 also offers roles-based design and integrates with Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2007 software. For smaller retailers—and in conjunction with First Data and HP—Microsoft also announced an out-of-the-box POS and payment suite that is designed to replace a cash register and dial-up connection to the Internet with a PC-based POS sys more

Resolved Question: Market price of support for business software?

I need to know the market price on support of business software. I need this to argue towards one of my clients why I want to take a really high price for maintenance and support for the software my startup (with two employees) makes. My company creates software for business intelligence and provides a complete solution with statistics datawarehouse etc. I have already had a look at the company MySQL who take 5000$ for their premium service (since I am a startup with a lot fewer employees, this price is too low), so research for other small companies to see what they take. What I specifically need you to do is to research around, and give me a list in excel with the following columns: Name of company, link to list of prices, price per year of maintenance, price per hour of support (if provided). Please state your price and the number of companies you will provide this statistic for. more
