Basic research still key amid iPS excitement

A united front comprising the government, academic and business worlds has been formed to study the clinical application of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, developed by Kyoto University Prof. Shinya Yamanaka--but researchers still should not let this distract them from basic research.

At a press conference held May 16 in Tokyo, Kyoto University President Kazuo Oike emphasized the importance of support from the industrial sector in making research results useful for patients. "To that end, we would like to improve the system for managing and using intellectual property," he said.

Oike also stressed the significance of a new company to be set up with funds provided by three firms, including Daiwa Securities Group Inc. The new consortium will be tasked with managing patents related to iPS cells and promoting technology transfer. more
