Stocks mixed after oil passes $130, inventories drop

High energy prices have been a source of anxiety for investors, as many retailers, banks and credit card companies have noticed consumers paring back spending on discretionary items, including clothing and jewelry, to buy necessities such as gasoline and groceries, which have been soaring in price.

Wall Street was also hesitant as it awaited minutes from the Federal Reserve's April 29-30 meeting, which should provide more insight into whether policymakers regard rising energy prices as a serious threat. The Fed cut its benchmark federal funds rate by a quarter-percentage point to 2 percent at that meeting, marking the seventh cut in an easing cycle that started in September. Its accompanying economic statement left open the possibility of an end to rate cuts.

In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average slipped 36.72, or 0.29 percent, to 12,791.96, after rising in earlier trading. more

6 student ideas win High School Business Plan Competition

Christopher Griffin, a junior at Hudson High School, drew on his experience as a grocery store employee to create an award-winning business plan.

Customers at Acme Fresh Market in Hudson constantly ask him where to find things, so he and Hudson senior Daniel Kolliner came up with Kart Key - a blown-up, color-coded map attached to the back of shopping carts that would allow customers to effortlessly find items in the store.

The pair toyed with the idea of an electronic system but decided a plastic-enclosed paper map would be more economical and easier to use for the less technologically savvy.

"It's simple, but it works," Kolliner said.

Their business plan was among six recognized Wednesday evening as winners of the third annual Greater Cleveland Area High School Business Plan Competition at Cleveland State University. more

Business Buy Software Questions asked

Open Question: Web hosting companies & creating an online store?

I have currently built my own website with Yahoo Small Business and the software is Sitebuilder. I pay for the Yahoo Website Hosting Pckage which is $12.95 a month. I reguarly sell products through my website. However, it does not allow you to operate an online store and have a shopping cart unless you upgrade to the Merchant Solutions Plan which is $39.95 plus a $50 set up fee! This seems rather expensive, just to allow my customers to order different things in the same transaction. At the moment they can just purchase 1 item through PayPal on my site but I would really like to enable them to buy several things and have the option to view them in their shopping cart. Can anyone recommend any reasonable priced web hosting companies online that will allow me to do this and also build my own website from scratch - I dont want a template to work from. more

Open Question: I think my cell phone is bugged, what do I do?

ok the first paragraph is just kinda backround info to clear up the story, the second paragraph is the actual story. thanks =) Well I'm 14 and I have very... how do I say.. up-tight (??) parents. my mom isn't as bad as my step dad, but my mom does ask what i'm doing on the computer, who i'm texting, what i'm talking about, who i am friends with, and just she seems to kind of be in my business. of course it's ok, because i don't think she goes through my phone laptop etc, even if she did there's nothing being hidden except some bad language lol but then my step dad on the other hand.. oh lord.. he is so obsessed with the internet. and I mean he has passwords to EVERYTHING on the family computer, and i can't be on that thing without it saying i don't have permission. i told my dad about how hectic it is at my house with the internet and stuff, and he bought me my own laptop and told me never to give it to them and to have a password that no one could ever guess, on it. but ANYWAY (sorry i'm getting off track)::::::::; my phone lights up randomly, and the screen will just stay on. sometimes it will make a weird sound when i'm talking on it, and a lot of times the screen acts weird, like this little white bar flashes real quick in the bottom right corner, which happens on my laptop too -_- (i think they are both bugged -sigh-) What do I do? I have a BlackBerry Curve 8330 (Sprint) and it is only a few months old. getting a new one is out of the question. i don't have the money, and i love this phone. i have a password on it when its not in my pocket, so i don't think there is any way they could've put software on it. but anyway, what do i do? is it bugged or did my up tight mom and stepdad make me believe it is even though its not??!?!!? thanks!! more

Resolved Question: I feel that his expectations are too high .. I am not sure if he truely accepts me as his friend ?

A friend of mine ...who is a big believer in perfectionism.... He wants lot of things in a perfect way .... he is very good at construction related jobs / electrial jobs / graphics/ computer repair jobs and software related jobs .... NO he doesn't work in any of these industries . ...but he is a very good STREET SMART ...not a book-smart..becuz (1) he doen't believe in labor job (2) he is a entreprenur ...a truely business minded guy.... very talented ...very focused ....very skilled .....individual.. he is in college ...doing computer engineering degree ....for past 7 yrs ...he takes one class at a time ... and doesn't care much when he will graduate !!! which is a good mentality .....but that means he HAS LOT OF FREE TIME.... and whnever i hangout with him ..i always get into lot of arguments ...and lot of back and forth attacks .... sometimes its few simple stuff ....sometimes its a philosophical discussions... he has a temper issue and crazy attitude ..(angriness) On the other hand - I am a very laid back - somewhat lazy but person with values and principles ... I like to have my own space and time to prepare for my studies / school / etc. I graudated with Biotech degree and worked in pharmaceutical industry (not a technical job but mostly straightforwrad jobs ) - then got laid off after 2 yrs and now searching for jobs / learning new things / taking one course towards my MS degree.... NOw WE BOTH have lot of free time .. I hang out with him a lot ....but most of the time it feels to me that HE LOOKS DOWN on me ... (He is rich , talented , skilled and he knows how to talk).. I am still making my way up ... looking for jobs in pharmaceutical industry ...so my jobs are not As technical as his jobs .... but whnever i get into arguments with him ....he calls me "slowass, slow guy, stupid, idiot, etc " ... most of the time i don't care much ..... but many times he gives those comments in front of other ppl as well. I do admit ...i am not as skilled / talented or street smart as he is ..... + Pharmaceuctial is great industry but IT IS NOT MY IDEAL job .... my ideal job is something I am still SEARCHING ...but what else AM I SUPPOSED TO DO ..if I don't have MONEY ...right ??? I am supposed to make money and pay my bills ....while i look for my ideal career ....and buy my ideal house/condo ...and buy an ideal car ....and live in a ideal way according to my friend ...i don't have too many high standards ....high goals .....(i do have high goals its just I don't want to SHARE my goals with the guy who CONSTANTLy criticizes me ...) I know i don't need to be this sensitive and maybe I should talk back to my friend ...but .... does him being very streeet smart ...give him right to criticize me for my not so skilled lifestyle ????? It feels a bit out of the group when he is around ...and we are pretty good friends when we are both alone ..but as soon as one more frined gets added ...they usually take his side ... sometimes i do feel like ....talking back to him....but what kind of person i would be if i start POINTING at someone's weaknesses ....every now and thne ????? more

Resolved Question: Can you help me pick a laptop?

I want to start thinking about my next laptop. I have a Dell XPS M1535 and I really don't love it. I'm not a gamer, but I have many memory-intensive apps open at the same time. If the system would allow it I would have Adobe PS, Illustrator, Flash and Dreamweaver all open along with Firefox, which has terrible memory leaks if you use any plugins. Between all this I need a decent processor and a lot of memory. Macs would be great in theory but are out of the question because of the lack of software. The i5, i7 processors look appealing but they are so new, I don't know if they run hot and/or have other drawbacks, and I'm tempted to wait for the next generation of i7s. Given this usage pattern would you say I should look for a gaming computer? I don't seem to fall in the normal classes (business user, gamer), so often not sure what to look for. There's a new Sony VAIO with an i7 processor that looks kind of appealing. Well, any lines or model suggestions appreciated. Last few times I just bought a laptop without much thought, and this time I want to do better.I have 4gb of memory now, and it's not nearly enough, so I guess I didn't explain my needs very well. Oh well! more

Resolved Question: collect unemployment benefits while trying to start a consulting business?

I'm a software engineer in California collecting unemployment insurance. In addition to looking for a full-time job, I'm also trying to start a software consulting business. I'm buying business cards, building a website and portfolio of my work, meeting with prospective clients, etc. I haven't gotten any consulting clients yet but I'm trying hard. I have two related questions: first: does trying to start a consulting business disqualify me from receiving unemployment benefits, even if I haven't earned any money (yet!) from my consulting work? Second: if I'm not successful in getting paid consulting clients by the end of the year, can I deduct expenses I incurred starting up my consulting business as losses on Schedule C? Or will that raise too many eyebrows given that I collected unemployment benefits for most of the year? My unemployment benefits are larger than the tax benefit of Schedule C losses, so if I have to choose I won't deduct my Schedule C losses. But I'd prefer not to have to choose! :-) more

Voting Question: Help with Small business taxes?

I'm using Quicktax Online Edition to do my small business taxes. It's a videography business, and I wanted to deduct the equipment that I purchased - video camera, tripod, editing software, and smaller equipment. Is there a way to write these things off as an expense and not have to put them down as fixed assets that you only get depreciation costs for over the course of multiple years? I bought some of the equipment used, so some of it only cost like $25, so it seems weird that the software is implying that I have to put down $25 as fixed assets that I dont' get a regular deduction for. The only thing I bought that costs over $200 is the video camera which was around $900. So, can I put down the equipment, software, and some office furniture that all cost under $200 (Most under $80) as expenses. If I can't put the video camera down as a regular expense, how can I get the most back this year. I'm doing my 2008 taxes, and had to upgrade to a high definition camera in 2009, so I barely use this camera anymore anyway. Please help. It would be great if you have experience with Quicktax Online Edition. I just tried entering the items as fixed assets, and it didn't seem to give me any refund for this year. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to write anything in the UCC spaces next to the amounts.Just to clarify I'm Canadian (BC) so I'm looking for someone who knows Canadian taxes. more

Resolved Question: How will financing be for me?

Opening a tanning salon(something neat and sophisticated looking.) has been in my plans since I was about 14. All during high school I was home schooled and I worked for my dad cleaning newly constructed houses/businesses before they were put on the market for sale or lease. That is until things went under and he had to file for bankruptcy on all of the residential and commercial real estate that he developed. The I went to Costco for 2 years. From the 4 or so years I worked during school, I hoarded nearly every penny I made so I could fulfill my dream as an entrepreneur when I graduated from high school. Right after graduating from the Fulton County Public School System, I was set and went out looking for SOMETHING else to do to start my career in a self-owned business. Everything exceeded what my budget was set on until my dads good friends' dad was retiring and selling his repo company. So, I knew then at that time that was my opportunity. Luckily he allowed me to finance everything since he owned the stuff and he also let me walk in his lot that he's now leasing to me. So I've been in the repossession/recovery business for over a year now and with the economy HOPEFULLY shaping up, I've really been thinking about getting rid of my trucks & selling everything(of course after I have another main source of income coming in). The main reason is because I fear in about 2-3 years from now, this economy will have improved greatly and there won't be as much recovery work to cover all of my expenses associated with my company. ---OK so now my story about my young life is over, I'll get to my main concern- Although I'm only 19 now, I've had credit since I was 15(I lied about my DOB on credit card apps which has now been corrected with all 3 credit bureaus). Every since then I ALWAYS did right and kept my credit immaculate as it still is. My Transunion FICO through MyFico is at 738 and is slowly rising as my accounts grow older and as my personal vehicle is on its way to being fully paid off. I do have credit cards, but have $0 in credit card debt. Since Mar. 8th 2009 to Dec. 31st 2009, my company has grossed approx. $480K. That number may be fairly large, but considering I have 3 other drivers/employees I pay commission to, repo insurance(nearly $13K for not even the full year), rent on my ex-car lot(just over $20K for not even the full year), tax, all utilities, and after going ahead and paying my "agent" off for financing the PC's, software, trucks etc., that number was lowered significantly. Fortunately, 2010 so far is just as busy as it has been for the past 10 months and I'm even having to send repo orders back to finance companies from not having enough time to do them all(I'm not buying another truck). Like I said, I'm really thinking about going into the tanning business and it's a decision I'll have to make between now and the next 2-3 years. Would someone like me at my age(I will be 21-22yo then) have a hard time being approved for a $300K+ loan with the following factors: Company grossed $480K.(Honestly I want to leave this out of the app.) I netted about $110K during the last 3 quarters of '09.(before all of my personal bills/expenses.) I have roughly $80K in assets(2 recovery trucks, a money market account, and other misc. things). I have 3 checking accounts(2 personal, 1 business) I have 2 savings accounts. I have tax forms that have been filed and I also have bank and broker statements to prove my income. I have above average+ personal credit but no business credit.(no debt besides personal vehicle which will be paid off in 2 years or sooner) I have the knowledge, skill and common sense to know how to properly run a business. I can produce a legitimate business proposal. Hopefully within the next 2 or so years all of my assets and everything else will have grown.(if it doesn't there's a problem. lol) I know this is a lot of info, but my life ahead is really sticking to my nerves and I need support. I saw how my dad went from one minute having a lot of real estate to the next minute having to dig into his retirement money, and I want to avoid this by all means possible. I could be making a mistake by wanting to stop repossessing vehicles but as I said, I feel when this economy shapes up I won't even be grossing enough to cover everything and I don't want to lose my ***. The big question, how will banks view my status when attempting to obtain a commercial loan for roughly $300K? Would it be best if I go through the SBA? Hi, my boss asked me to to figure out a way to cut down drastically on our telephone expenses. Although I don't handle telephone systems per say, I'm a computer IT guy and figure I can handle this. We currently have a 30 year old dinosaur phone system supported by Avaia and it's routing four phone lines from ATT..then a fifth dedicated fax line which goes to a computer with fax software. Total 5 telephones, it's a small office. My goal is to cut down the telephone lines to 2 or 3 as business is very slow (we only advertise one number too). I'm hoping to get rid of the whole telephone system (which looks like a big switchboard and currently takes up a large closet) and get rid of the avaya bill too..phones can be bought on ebay for cheap when they break...we're only paying for Avaya to keep the dinosaur alive, and they don't want to do it. Basically the only features we need in office are the ability to put calls on hold and the boss likes his speed dialing...intercom would be nice. Any suggestions..what would you do? Links to telephone routers or voip or something would help. Thanks. more

Voting Question: Has anyone ever bought software from bigsoftsale.com?

Microsoft Office 2007 Professional & Windows 7 Ultimate for 179.95 sounds too good to be true?? Also the company seems to contradict itself: Privacy Notice Once your order is processed during regular business hours, you will be emailed the manufacturers download link and product serial number. Bigsoftsale.com does not host the download on our web site. You must go to the manufacturer’s web site to download the program. Shipping & Returns Can I download the software once I place the order? No, and you must avoid purchasing download copies of Microsoft software. Download versions are illegal. Microsoft software must be shipped to you. more

Resolved Question: Do I need to license Windows fonts for business logo use?

Tried searching, but to no avail. I feel like this is an obvious yes, but I just wanted to double-check. Basically, I'm a web designer who got stuck with creating two logos for a start-up company. In them I used Century Gothic Bold and Segoe Script - both of which came installed with my copy of Windows 7. Given that they will be using these logos for business use, as well as marketing and on the actual product, do they need to "buy" the fonts in order to legally use them? I see that (www.ascenderfonts.com) sells both for $30 each, but it seems to be licenses for 1-5 computers, not actual business print/software/web use. Thanks! more

Voting Question: to the party saying "no" ......care to look into the mirror?

Why cyberspace isn’t, and will never be, nirvana By Clifford Stoll | NEWSWEEK From the magazine issue dated Feb 27, 1995 After two decades online, I’m perplexed. It’s not that I haven’t had a gas of a good time on the Internet. I’ve met great people and even caught a hacker or two. But today, I’m uneasy about this most trendy and oversold community. Visionaries see a future of telecommuting workers, interactive libraries and multimedia classrooms. They speak of electronic town meetings and virtual communities. Commerce and business will shift from offices and malls to networks and modems. And the freedom of digital networks will make government more democratic. Baloney. Do our computer pundits lack all common sense? The truth in no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works. Consider today’s online world. The Usenet, a worldwide bulletin board, allows anyone to post messages across the nation. Your word gets out, leapfrogging editors and publishers. Every voice can be heard cheaply and instantly. The result? Every voice is heard. The cacophany more closely resembles citizens band radio, complete with handles, harrasment, and anonymous threats. When most everyone shouts, few listen. How about electronic publishing? Try reading a book on disc. At best, it’s an unpleasant chore: the myopic glow of a clunky computer replaces the friendly pages of a book. And you can’t tote that laptop to the beach. Yet Nicholas Negroponte, director of the MIT Media Lab, predicts that we’ll soon buy books and newspapers straight over the Intenet. Uh, sure. What the Internet hucksters won’t tell you is tht the Internet is one big ocean of unedited data, without any pretense of completeness. Lacking editors, reviewers or critics, the Internet has become a wasteland of unfiltered data. You don’t know what to ignore and what’s worth reading. Logged onto the World Wide Web, I hunt for the date of the Battle of Trafalgar. Hundreds of files show up, and it takes 15 minutes to unravel them–one’s a biography written by an eighth grader, the second is a computer game that doesn’t work and the third is an image of a London monument. None answers my question, and my search is periodically interrupted by messages like, “Too many connectios, try again later.” Won’t the Internet be useful in governing? Internet addicts clamor for government reports. But when Andy Spano ran for county executive in Westchester County, N.Y., he put every press release and position paper onto a bulletin board. We’ll order airline tickets over the network, make restaurant reservations and negotiate sales contracts. Stores will become obselete. So how come my local mall does more business in an afternoon than the entire Internet handles in a month? Resolved Question: Illegal to refuse a refund?

I have a small computer repair shop. I operate on tight tight finances and my policy has always been that any hardware sold has a 30 day replacement or repair warranty, and there is no warranty on software. I have had many happy customers buy computers from me and have computers repaired with me. I only accept cash, because there is no chargeback risk as with credit cards or checks. Recently I had a customer purchase a laptop from me, bring it back and say she is not happy with it. Claims it will not play video games her son wants to play on it. I told her it is not powerful enough. (Not enough ram or processor speed). There is nothing wrong with the computer. I can't afford to refund her but she claims its illegal to not refund money. I kicked her out but today I got a summons to appear in court for she is suing my business. I did nothing illegal here, how can she sue? more

Voting Question: The REAL reason Google is leaving China?

Two Gmail accounts get hacked and Google threatens to pull out of China if they don't allow uncensored searching. Yeah, ok Google.... 1. Why would Google give a toss if two e-mails got hacked with an organization that has nothing to do with the company itself? That's like me being the owner of Wal-Mart and closing down some stores after a huge shootout, it makes NO sense. 2. What the hell did they expect when they started doing business in China? HELLO! This is not the country of Switzerland we are dealing with, it is China. Of course there's going to be laws against censorship along with suspicious cyber attacks and funny government rules. China does not have the same laws that the U.S. does. Here in the U.S., we can bash Bush all day and not get arrested for it. 3. Google talks about this "20 or so U.S. companies got attacked in the process." It seems to me like this statement is an excuse to add icing to the cake. Companies in the states get attacked almost every day from random hackers/virus/malware. All you have to do is go out and buy anti-virus software if you're so concerned about this. I think this is just an excuse that Google pulled out of their hats in order to leave China. My girlfriend's debit card just got hacked about 3 weeks ago by someone in another country with charges of over $300. 4. The REAL reason Google is pulling out is not because of this, but because of poor business in China. I don't necessarily believe that Baidu is the cause. If you're fighting against another team in baseball, why quit when the score is 3 to nothing? Google is not making good money in China, so they use excuses of cyber attacks to leave the country by trying to force them into filtering their search results. 5. Google is stereotyping China using this technique, and they did a good job too. Hey, everyone knows that China is full of hackers, lets use that to make a good reason to pull out. 6. America is known to lie and deceive people in the media/community and it has been a trick used ever sine this country got invaded. Google doesn't want to make themselves look bad, so they use some pennyass lie about 20-30 companies being attacked by China. Everyone in the world knows that America does this, hell, I am a born citizen of this country and know for a fact that we do this. This has been our tactic for years on building this country. Wake up people. A multi-billion dollar company is not going to pull out of a country because someones e-mail account got hacked, that's just stupid. And I bet everyone a month's paycheck that Google would not give a toss about this attack if they were making lots of money in China. PS: Google says that the hackers stole a source code. The e-mails belonged to Chinese human rights activists, not Google staff. They refuse to release any more information about the source code being stolen, so I doubt this statement is true. I am thinking this may also be a lie. more

Resolved Question: Using pirate copies of obsolete/defunct software.?

Here is an interesting question that came up at a friends house the other night ... Is it ok to use a pirate copy of software created by a company now out of business, and the software itself is now not used anymore? There are loads of software written by companies now long gone, and the software itself hasn't been available to buy for many years. Canoma by Metacreations is a good example. Even, say, a very early, late 1990's version of Dreamweaver when it was owned by Macromedia. Another question similar to this popped up as well .... is it ok to use a very early Microsoft product ... eg Office 97 .... that was purchased in a charity shop? Office 97 is now long defunct, and Bill Gates runs all over the world giving money to charity. This question is more philosophical than legal. These questions should be asked now that (excellent) older software is now getting ancient and defunct, and now unobtainable other than illegal means. (Poser 4 Pro Pack is another example.) When a software company goes under, and their products disappear into the ether, is it still illegal to use pirate copies of it? Should the software just die and go to Software Heaven? Any thoughts? more

Resolved Question: B&F Top Contributors: Is this solicitation?

Someone in business and finance asked "how do I make money online". I gave him an answer on how I do it, and I was reported. I tried to appeal it and they rejected my appeal (twice) and took 20 points from my account. I feel that it was top contributors who reported me because everytime I post anything in Business and Finance, it gets reported. I think that some of the Top Contributors automatically assume that it's impossible to make money online. They think everything is a scam. I think people should be more careful when reporting answers in this section. You tell me, was this answer solicitation, and HOW? my answer: "Start an online community, a mini myspace in other words or forum. I have a few dating sites and I use adwords to get members. The site is free and I only have about 800 members so far on my main site, but once I have more (about 5,000 or more), I will place ads on there and make money from the ads just like myspace does. There's free software out there for social sites so after you install it, you just work on getting members to sign up. I use Google adwords to advertise mainly. My main site is an asian site so its cheaper for me to advertise since I only only show ads to people out of Asian countries. This is cheaper for advertising, but it also means I'll make less once I place ads on there, because clicks from people in Asia don't pay as well since they don't buy as much online as Americans, Canadians etc. As far as selling domains, that's not easy. I used to do it but it's just getting harder now with the economy the way it is. But most of the people I sold domains to were other domain investors. Advertising is recession proof though. There is always people who are looking to advertise their businesses, even when the economy is bad. Another thing you can do is buy misspelled domains or domains you think you can park. I park domains and some have been pretty successful. There's this one celebrity that just became real famous (realized I can't say his name for certain reasons), and right around the time this was happening, I bought about 4 domain names that are misspellings of his name. Now people searching for his name on the internet who misspell it, end up at my parked page, where I have ads that some of them click on."notice how I said "There's free software out there". They got me so nervous just to mention any company other than Google in this section. I took extra precaution and was still reported. Why? more

Voting Question: How can I *LEGALLY* buy a used PC?

The question is not as easy as it may seem. Resolved Question: My laptop is running really slow after a bad shutdown?

Hi all. My names Seth. Just bought a new computer off ibuypower.com Its an awesome computer and i love it. I got it on my two weeks leave home. Im deployed in iraq right now. So ive had it for about 3 weeks now. Last night i got food poisoning and was really sick. Instead of shutting it down properly, i just opted to press the off button. Resolved Question: How can I earn a bitme.org invite?

Before I ask this question, please do not start with the assumption that I am just some pirate , not wanting to pay for materials that are copyrighted by others. I personally use torrent sites for two reasons: 1) Obtaining materials that I can not find anywhere else, for example older versions of software that have been discontinued and or the company has gone out of business. 2) self enrichment materials as I am a struggling engineering student, who would love to buy as many books as possible to help me in my studies, however I can barely afford the books required for my courses. It is my understanding that bitme.org has many of the self enrichment materials and I have been looking for an invite for years. I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to earn an invite to such a site. Maybe through someone in the community here that has an invite to spare, or if there might be a third party site that has some way to earn such things. Thanks you all for your time. more

Voting Question: My computer keeps logging my out right after log in...why??? PLEASE HELP?

A few weeks ago I had a virus that I took care of. It was a mess but it was taken care of. There was 1 thing though...my background under properties was not working. Someone suggested to me to do a System Restore to a date PRIOR to my virus. So...again there was nothing really wrong with my computer except for the backgrounds. WELL....stupid me...I did the System Restore to a date way before infection. It did the restore but now...it wont let me log into my computer in regular nor safe mode. I know I DO NOT have a virus. Resolved Question: My position and job description has changed, but my pay hasn't, how do I have the conversation with my boss?

About 9 months ago my job description and role changed. I was originally hired for a non technical position at 60K. I happened to have a variety of programming skills they needed, web, software, database, and also system administration know how so they changed my position unofficialy to technology. I developed a web based application to do what a piece of software that cost 40K which we wanted to buy would do, but we didn't have the money in the budget so I stepped in. I recently had to create another application, though rather small this time. Right now I am working on another application, that is rather complex and large. I have been doing this latest project one on my own time, because my NDA states that anything I develop on the job becomes company property and I want to reserve the option to sell it as my own product. So I want to show my boss what I have been working on, and negotiate a pay increase, then complete the application for the company. My boss has told me and my other three co-wrokers who's positions have also changed (though theirs in non technical areas) for almost a year now that he is going to have HR reclassify our positions and pay, but it has yet to happen, he keeps putting it off, saying this quarter, next quarter, etc. So I can keep the application to my self and sell it in my own consulting business part time, OR go to him and express my frustration that I am underpaid for what I am doing. He would love nothing more than for me to develop this application, but I expect to be compensated like any other developer in the market. So how do I have the conversation with him? What do I say without it coming across the wrong way? more
