Vertis aims to buy Brentwood's American Color Graphics -- again

Vertis Communications, a Baltimore-based direct marketing firm, has agreed to purchase Brentwood's American Color Graphics.

As part of the agreement, American Color will merge its operations into Vertis' nationwide marketing and printing services platform.

ACG, which had a 2007 fiscal revenue of $445 million, will become a subsidiary of Vertis at the closure of the planned merger.

The deal is a part of a massive restructuring by Vertis, which took in $1.5 billion in revenue last year.

It's actually the second time in less than a year that the two companies have tried to reach a merger deal. An effort in late 2007 fell through because the companies couldn't gain enough support from bondholders.

This time around, the companies say they have reached agreements with more than two-thirds of the current bondholders, who have agreed to exchange their bonds for about $550 million in new notes and substantially all of the new equity in the combined company. more

I'm doing a mock business plan for class, due next Monday. I have chosen to start my own air charter business, utilizing two MD-500e helicoptors, a Cessna 206B and a Cessna 208, both wiith float attachments. I plan to target hunters, fishermen, marine biology departments, fish and wildlife services, GIS companies needing aerial maps, etc. I already have all the cost data associated with each aircraft. Now I just need to figure out how to sell a very expensive plan to a bank or venture capitalist. This only needs to be between 10-15 pages, with a typical executive summary, financial analysis, etc. Does anyone know of a good business plan writing software? It would need to be able to incorporate all the aircraft data I have and combine it with other data and produce a finished product, complete with a launch price and revenue estimator. Any help would be very appreciated. more

I have a small ebay business and am looking for a good accounting software to use. Basically for any given item I want to be able to track my costs (listing fees, paypal fee, final value fees, & postage) as well as the profits related to that item (sales price). I would like to be able to see this analysis on a individual item basis as well as on a time frame basis (i.e. all my listing fees for the month). I've heard quickbooks can be a good accounting software for small business, but i'm thinking it might even be more complex then what i'm looking for. Does anyone have any suggestions?I'm almost thinking a job cost accounting system might work best. That way i could enter each type of cost as they are incurred. For example i don't have to pay paypal fees until the item sells, sometimes i have to relist it several times before then, so i might have 3 listing fees before i have a paypal fee. I believe a job cost accounting system would let me do that, but i just dont know of any good accounting software out there that has this. more

Basically I am in Yr8 and I need to select my subjects for Yr9. My plan fo rhte next decade is to finish highschool, enroll into the AUSTRALIAN Army as an engineer (Not sure what type). I am 27 years old, and I still don't know what I want to do with my life. I am in a state of extreme desperation and need some help. I have a college degree (Bachelors of Arts in Computer Science & Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Financial concentration), received from a top 20 American university. My question is: Should I stick with a career that makes decent money, but results in moderate/mediocre satisfaction (and aggravation) OR Jump track to a completely different field that makes less money but offers greater fulfillment? Specifically, I am trying to choose between Paths A1, A2, or B. (A1 and A2 are similar areas of the same field, computers. B is a completely different field entirely). PATH A1 = Data/Business Analyst: I've only been in the work force for several years (since college), but my limited experience has been as an analyst. To be honest, being a data analyst IS just about as robotic and boring as it sounds. My overall satisfaction with this career so far is about 5 / 10. I don’t get to do as much problem-solving and thinking as much as I’d like. I often wonder what else is out there. Because my resume (experience history) consists only of this type of work, recruiters only consider me for data analyst jobs. Consequently, I feel that I am forever pigeonholed into data/business analyst. I know I may need to stick with this type of job, for now, while the economy is so bad. Keep in mind, however, that my question is geared toward long-term, not short-term, life goals. (I am assuming the economy will get better eventually.) PATH A2 = Software Development / Software Engineering: This would allow me to still remain within the scope of the field of computers. I would hate to "waste” time spent on my degree and experience by leaving the field entirely. A computer path (A1 or A2) makes a great deal more money than other careers in other fields. I also still find computers interesting; I have some background in programming as I have studied this in my college major and have done some programming projects. I find software development more interesting because you get to use your head to build a machine (program) that solves a real life problem or does a neat little task. It’s a gratifying feeling of accomplishment. The problem is I don't have any real work experience in programming (besides SQL), and I feel 5 years behind the field because I only know C, Java, and some other basic languages. Any advice? PATH B = Climatology: Since I was much younger, I've been really interested in Earth Science, particularly atmospheric science. This passion only grows with age. I’ve learned about weather patterns and storms, all in my RECREATION time! The idea of working on the problem of global warming, in particular, fascinates me. It’s an opportunity for me to contribute something positive to this world and my generation, with my life. Now if I have been this curious about a subject for 15 years already, should I pursue it? What’s always held me back is (a) it doesn't make nearly as much money as other careers (it makes about HALF of Path A above), (b) it might be harder to find a job because I feel that a climatologist is less crucial to society in these hard times than a computer specialist, and (c) the career is associated with less status than say a lawyer, businessman, or engineer. (I know this sounds silly, but it means something in my warped little mind, so bear with me.) PLAN C = Intersection of A and B: Ideally, I am ultimately interested in a career that combines elements of Computers with Climatology. I have envisioned a type of job that does statistical or computational analysis on long-term weather phenomena. Perhaps I can wind up in some government job or weather bureau? I have no idea how I would get to that point (what type of masters programs and job experience I need). I want to seize this opportunity, while the economy is hurting so badly, to entertain thoughts of going to graduate school. BUT WHAT WILL I STUDY? I need to make a committed decision on which path to follow, so I can research the appropriate graduate-level program. First I have to answer the question addressed above: HOW IMPORTANT (to me) IS MONEY VERSUS PASSION, when considering a career? I am unhappy with my job because I want higher pay, work in a big company there will be better health/dental benefits vs. a 30 man company, and the worst is that every minute I have co-op students bugging me about work related problems. The workload in my current job is pretty much zero, there is nothing to do. I want to quit because I don't like computers that much, I prefer using it, instead of investigating the other people's technical problems. So as software tester, I am basically techinical support 50% of the time. I want to be a Data Analyst especially in the government sector, so basically you pull out data from database systems and create report on those data like Business Analyst, Policy Analyst, or Healthcare/Health Information Analyst. So far I only have 2 interviews in those position. One is an internship for Business Analyst and the hiring manager wasn't happy that I have a full time job and want to switch to internship which pays low and is temporary job so I didn't get that one. After applying 10 times, and over 1 year of waiting I finally got interview for Healthcare Analyst from my dream company which was last week, I didn't get a call back so far, so I am pretty sure I didn't pass the interview. I am studying Business ANalysis right now and in my spare time I would learn the necessary computer softwares that I will need for the job. I am okay with Admin jobs or Human Resources but then it would be a waste of my university degree so that's why I prefer Data Analyst at least there are some computer programming involved. So I don't really know what to do anymore. I really want to quit my current job but then I would be jobless again but going through interviews behind your manager's back is hard. I am really tempting to quit my job, move to a smaller city that is filled with many jobs so I can get started with my Data Analyst job. I am really stuck because my parents rely on me for money and with the economy right now it can be risky to quit. more

Hi, I had a potential partner come up with a software product business idea (which is already out there, but not automated as much), and excepts 50% partnership in the company with 0 risk, 0 investment and without commiting to any serious responsibility with consequences for any negligence or failure. I told that it's not reasonable that only an Idea gets paid 50% partnership without taking any serious responsibility or risk or even investing. Even to implement his Idea it takes more business strategists and analysts and couldbe done possibly without his help. I offered him a 40-60 partnership and he's not happy. I'm considering working again after 4 years of raising two children. I would love to find a job where I can work primarily from home. I have an extensive background in technical writing, online copywriting, biological field research and data analysis. I have also done software development testing. Of course I am a little rusty, but have the utmost confidence in my skills. Does anyone know of any jobs where I can work flexible hours, from home, so I can stay home with my little girls.
