He was one of a group of business heavyweights who met HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) officials in September to discuss the Government's proposed changes to the taxation of British-based companies' foreign profits. Minutes of that meeting reveal that Mr Heslop advised a cautious approach, saying that HMRC needed to work with business at board level to ensure that the outcome was not rushed.

Since then the Government's proposed changes to taxation on foreign profits have prompted Shire, Britain's third-largest drugs company, to announce plans to move its tax domicile to Ireland. United Business Media is following suit and others are considering a similar move. Big business will be reassured, therefore, that the cautious Mr Heslop has been appointed as a member of the Treasury's new multinational forum on tax. more

Soaring diesel price stalls small regional business

Mr Martin fears the cold weather, when less work is available, combined with soaring diesel prices may spell the end of his part-time business.

“I've put my gardening prices up to make up for the extra fuel," he said.

The price of oil struck new highs last week, prompting a warning from one motoring organisation that the worst is yet to come.

The Nationals Wauchope branch has called for action to curb exorbitant diesel prices.

Branch chairman Rob Hamilton says diesel prices affect country people more than they affect city people because many locals choose four-wheel drives due to the state of rural roads.

Farmers use diesel in tractors and other machinery, and most rural goods are transported by diesel trucks.

When I went through the H&R Block software and put my income in under Schedule C, it asked me all about my expenses. Because we just got started up, my income was about $1,500 and expenses were $11,500 which made it so that my income for this job is reported as -$10,000. Then later I get to the Job-Related Expenses portion of the Deductions tab and it's asking me many of the same questions that it asked me while I was filling out the Schedule C. Where should these expenses go? What will get me the best return? Some of these expenses are directly of my studio such as paint and utilities. My nearly twenty years in the software industry is a complete clusterfunk, and I don't know what I did to cause it, except for having a brain, caring about my work, and maintaining personal integrity. At least that's my side of the story. Maybe one of you can figure out what I did wrong, or where I'm full of it. It's the same pattern at every company I've worked -- the vast majority of my peers, who apparently have their college degree, are so horribly underqualified to do their job, that words fail me. Almost without exception, they are stupid, ignorant, lazy, and dishonest. They seem perfectly content to fake their way through their job and stick me with all the hard work. The number of co-workers I've had in my life that I could trust to do real work, I can count on one hand, and have fingers left over. The only wildcard is my boss -- if he/she is actually competent, then I tend to keep my job, even though my job is sheer hell. If he/she is hopelessly average, I tend to get fired for "having a bad attitude", then I have to explain myself over and over at job interviews. More often than not, the interviewer gets a faraway look in his/her eyes, as if admitting that I would just have the same problem there. I'm pretty sure I've done nothing other than work hard, strive to improve, care about my work, and not take shortcuts. Granted, my people skills aren't exactly politician grade, but what can I do -- a few years ago I finally heard about something called Asperger's Syndrome, and damned if I didn't match up with every single last symptom. (Actually, it mentioned clumsiness, which doesn't fit me -- my reflexes are quick and accurate. But if by clumsiness they mean awkwardness, never mind, that fits.) But given that many computer programmers have Asperger's Syndrome, it really seems like that can't be the source of my problems with work. From my point of view, it seems like I can't find a decent company to work for. Every one is just a museum for lazy morons. I've worked in six different parts of the software industry -- word processing, OEM, business simulation, income tax, defense contracting, and video games -- and it's the same story everywhere. (The incompetent defense-industry programmers really floor me -- don't soldiers have to depend on this crap?) It seems like there would have to be a decent place to work somewhere -- please? Maybe? I've completely failed at finding one. Is it because I never bothered to get a master's or PhD? (It took me five years and a quarter just to get my bachelor's. No, I'm not a slacker -- ask anyone that went to U.C. San Diego, they'll tell you this is typical. The course load is just too heavy for us engineering students.) I didn't get an advanced degree because I was quite sick of college and desperate to start my adult life. Besides, it's not like college really taught me much -- I tended to be years ahead of my peers, based on my own self-driven education. Maybe the jobs I'm talking about are reserved for PhDs? I don't know. Am I just full of it? Feel free to ask for clarifications or whatever...I'll do my best to explain where I'm coming from. But as it stands, I feel like I'm living in Bizarro world, where good is bad and bad is good, and someone that actually knows how to do his job and achieve results in the real world is some sort of freak, good only for ridicule and stabbing in the back. Oh, and one last thing...I am not looking for wishful thinking or well-meaning lies. How I feel about all of this is completely irrelevant. I don't need to be soothed. I'll feel good about this as soon as there is a logical reason to feel good about it, and not a second sooner, and anything less than that, as far as I'm concerned, qualifies as self-delusion, so don't even suggest it. I feel that I have this going on at work. I was recently promoted and with it I got a new office instead of a smaller one that I shared with two other male workers and one female. Now I work in my own office and have longer hours but the pay is way more than what I was getting. I went from $31,000 a year to $52,300 a year. Almost half of what i was getting. The position I am at now was not an easy thing to accomplish, nor was it something I took for granted. All those who wanted to be promoted to the position I got promoted to had to complete a 3 month class of learning new material and new software data. Which also included computer programing to make the software run on laptops without burning the system out. We also had to put in at least 4 hours a day on top of the already 8 hours we were working the regular job. The training class for this new promotion was only 4 days a week so I chose to do them two hours after I got off of work for 4 days a week. It was one of the most hardest things I've ever done and the directors did not in no way make it easier on me because I am a woman or because I am black. There were 17 of us to start with. 5 dropped out in the first week and then 4 more dropped out during the weeks to come. In the end there were me and 8 other people from my job left. And I made sure I did all of my assignments as soon as I got them so I would not slack behind in any work. And every time I did not under stand something I would make sure to ask questions and take notes at the end of each class. When the training session was over I was so surprised to hear that I had been the one who was selected. One of the male instructors of the program told me that he was very impressed with my work and that he admired my dedication. When I got home I cried for over an hour and called all of my family and friends and told them the good news. Back at work when I was moving my things from the shared office to the new office that was all mine.
