Of course, investors ideally want to back firms that have brilliant managers and a brilliant business model. But some venture capitalists favour the former.
The view that excellent leaders can make the critical difference to a new company permeates the classroom as well: ask any gathering of MBAs if it is the business "horse" or the management team "jockey" that matters most in an investment appraisal and a sizeable number of students will pick the jockey (perhaps because they fancy sitting in the start-up saddle themselves one day).
Yet a new study* shows that in the real world most venture capitalists put far more emphasis on the runners than the riders. The study's authors—Steven Kaplan of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, Berk Sensoy of the University of Southern California and Per Strömberg of the Swedish Institute for Financial Research—look at a sample of 50 firms backed by ten different VC companies, examining their early business plans and then tracking their performance through to initial public offering (IPO) and several years beyond. more
Credit crunch 'big concern for business'
Businesses remain upbeat despite significantly higher borrowing costs and difficulties in finding suitable, talented staff in a tight labour market, a survey has found.
The global credit crunch has forced businesses to be more conservative in their short-term outlook and made them less inclined to make substantial investments, according to the PricewaterhouseCoopers private business barometer report, released on Tuesday.
Businesses had also reduced their debt ratio as credit becomes more difficult to source due to the subprime mortgage meltdown in the United States.
Founder and managing director of Carman's Fine Foods Carolyn Creswell said high interest rates were a concern.
"If interest rates continue to rise, it may impact discretionary spending to the point consumers might think twice about purchasing things like quality muesli," Ms Creswell said in the report. more

We are a small company of several people. We all work from our own homes.(3 different locations) We need software to organize our sales leads, invoices, etc but we all need to access the same data so we need software that will store this information in a database online ( a web hosting account lets say that offers mysql databases). We currently have a Linux web hosting account for our website and it offers databases ( if this helps) This way, any of us can access the data from any location and update it. it can be a web based program or can be installed on our pc, as long as the data can be stored online for access to all of us. My husband is a freelance musician and I look after his accounts. His business is really taking off and he now has such a variety of work from so many different people its getting hard to keep track. I have been searching for a piece of software that can do the following: - Provide a calendar format viewing pane to see at a glance what jobs he has each day (to mirror his paper diary which will also serve as a backup if he loses it). - Enter income and expenses. - Categorize jobs ie pub gigs, guitar lessons, old peoples homes... - Apply an employer to each job with full contact details - Be able to track phone calls/emails to prospective employers - Generate reports to show where different sources where the income has come from every month - Generate invoices and show overdue and paid invoices The software doesn't need to be able to do VAT, neither do I need to connect to a bank account or reconcile the account. It would be preferable for the software to work on a mac or a pc but to be honest if I can just find something that does all the above I don't care which platform its on. I also don't mind whether its online or not. For those of us in the lower marginal brackets, who should we let do our taxes? Up to this point, the overriding response (which I greatly appreciate, naysayers included) has been that CD-ROMS are still as innacurrate as the person deciding where the input goes, tax preparers in most states still not need licensing, therefore they are totally unreliable and unverifiable, and even large firms like H&R Block are still abound with errors. If all the aforementioned is correct, then who do I go to if I cannot afford a CPA? Apparently, any alternative to a CPA is no good. While this may be true, the majority of people will never use a CPA unless they absolutely have to, and can afford to do so. So, what if I want to do taxes and I have an accounting degree and one year tax experience, plus 5+ years of online preparation for myself and my family, plus drive and ability? Should I schlep around H&R Block when they are comfortable selling software to the unknowing and uneducated taxpayer? Should I try to work for some tax office whose manager has a GED and a gold tooth? What if these are my only alternatives to starting my own tax business? What if I have a family to feed? What if no CPA firm is currently hiring college graduates? What if I have IRS training, familiarity with a reputable software, produced by company who has a customer-service hotline, and I turn down taxpayers who require a very complex return. What if I could access a large, large base of potential clients with a couple of newspaper advertisements? Could I pull it off? Would I be probably end up being sued? What if I was the most ethical person you ever met? What if I was vehimately opposed to corrupt or questionable tax schemes? And, I made a consicous effort to not prepare returns that were too complex. (Remember, I am an accountant, I have had several tax and business classes, I have been exposed and tested on many tax issues, albeit some more difficult than others.) But, can it work if I work my ass off, I research whenever I get confused, I take proactive steps to limit any errors (such as I'm doing now), and I make sure to remain as professional to my clients as one would expect? Then what? Could it work? Remember, I'm planning on targeting a very large potential customer pool, in several cities. What are my odds? If so many others are doing it (GED and Gold Tooth), why cant I? Please, all opinions are sincerely appreciated. So...I can't believe that I fell in this trap but I did...so just to warn others. There are more posts related to this on Yahoo answers, but a little older...so I thought I would refresh the info. There are a lot of internet money making scams out there, but these people get better and better. They advertise on what it seems like legit websites, they say they will only charge you $1 for shipping fees and they put Google in their name to make it more credible. Anyway, after one pays the $1 then you can see if you look carefully on the bottom of the page, with very small letters, that they will charge you a membership fee of ~79 monthly. They never say anything about this before you pay. Below I pasted the e-mail confirmation I got from them...and it says something about a membership fee now, but still not how much it is. People apparently got charged the amount after 7 days without even knowing why. Anyway...right after I signed up for it I called the 1-800- number listed below and they cancelled my account. But still I'm worried about my credit card...I'll have to watch it carefully! So...be careful out there...all these internet money making websites are scam! I currently have a toshiba satellite with a core 2 duo T5500 with 2gb of ram and 200gb hdd... This still runs as good as when I got it, but I am looking for something better. I don't need a hard core gaming laptop, but I have a lot of music and will be getting into creating and editing it as well I am beginning to work a lot with photoshop and other graphic design. I am partial to Toshiba, just because I have had 2 of them in the past and never had any problems at all, but I am open to the best for my money. I've helped a small business, and myself as a freelancer keep track of invoices, payments, past dues, collections, and purchasing materials, but I have never used excel to keep track of sales, accounting etc. I have used excel to keep track of data, and have herd from past jobs that they really liked the way that I was able to create charts, and organize data in excel, and was very useful for the whole office to be on the same page. They want to do another test on on excel, (on my free time of course, which I have none with a family, freelance projects, etc) The temp agency gave me a tutorial. Most of it's pretty easy, except for in the end when it gets into advanced formulas. The tutorials doesn't really teach much except for steps to take. I need to know why, why did the makers of excel choose this program to be set up this way, what's the logic behind it,and I need to find some other advanced online places to learn these. I also am wondering if I should summon up my Transcripts from college to prove that I did take the course, and also to ask my old temp agency in my old town to dig up my testing records to send over. or would this be looked at as defensive behavior ? I recently bought a new computer and built it myself, my motherboard has a 2 build in network adapters they are "realtek RTL8168/8111" my MOBO is a EP45-UD3P made by Gigabyte. My operating system is Vista 64 Business. I loaded all the drivers from the CD that came with the MOBO. No internet connection, when i check my little computer thing at the bottom right, it shows two computer things with an X through it saying i am not currently connected to any networks, when i go to the network and sharing center and click the link between the computer and the world(internet) it says There might be a problem with one or more adapters on this computer [The Network adapter "Realtek RTL8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) is experiencing driver or hardware related issues. When i go to Manage network connections from the network and sharing center, i get a blank window, just the menu at top(currently in network connections page, (on my other vista, and in xp this is where you usually see your connections 1349 LAN Name of router w/e its called and you can right click for TCP/IP protocol ect.) When i right click computer in the start menu and go to device manage, under "network adapters" It has my two cards Realtek RTL8168/811...... ect. same cards #1 and #2 both have a black ! inside a yellow triangle by them. When i right click and check their properties, in the General Tab it says under device status- This Device cannot start. (Code 10) Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available. In the Driver tab i click update driver and search computer automatically. I even browse directly to where the driver is and it says Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date. Realtek RTL8168/....... ect. driver name When i click the recources tab, it says- The device isn't using any recources becuase it has a problem. I have tried plugging into both ports on the back of my computer, i have reinstalled the drivers from my CD that came with the mobo and one i got off a different computer from the website put on a flash drive and transfered over about 5 times each have i installed from both sources, sometimes when i plug the cable into the RJ-45 port in the back the light blinks so i know its not fried, again its an integrated NIC Adapter the driver i am using is Realtek RTL8168/8111 Family PCE-E Gigabyte Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) Date is 1/15/2007 Version 6.190.115.2007 I have been trying to fix this ALL DAY thursday, and today which is friday, and i am SOOOO frustrated, i had to cancel many plans so try and fix this =/ (im not a procrastinator i like to fix problems right then and there) Info when i installed Vista 64 Business -i didnt put in key right away becuase i forgot it, i purchased the key from the Academic Alliance getting a student discount, and put it in after Vista was installed, i dunno if i put in the key right or not becuase aftter i put it in it wanted to verify it online (which it obviously couldn't do) and canceled out, so i dont know if it accepted it.
