Here are some of the business-related activities coming up in the tri-county area:

Tuesday: The National Federation of Independent Businesses will have its Small Business Day at the Alabama Capitol at 9 a.m. Tuesday on the sixth floor. The NFIB has invited Gov. Bob Riley, Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom and numerous legislators and other officials to the event, which will include a breakfast.

Tuesday: The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce will have its 2008 Procurement Match-Maker event at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at 600 S. Court St. The event is a chance for local corporate and government procurement specialists to meet with local minority and women-owned businesses to explain their unique procurement processes, supplier diversity programs and requirements for doing business with their company. more

The voice of the business community

In a report prepared by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to update citizens on the "State of American Business," strong private and public sector leadership is touted in a competitive economy.

"We can build and sustain a competitive U.S. economy that supports national security and expands opportunity and peace of mind across all levels of society," said Thomas Donohue, president and chief executive officer.

In small Fay-West towns, where small businesses thrive, chambers of commerce are relied upon to create peace of mind. And they do so in several ways.

"We tend to be the voice of the business community," said Muriel J. Nuttall, executive director of the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce. "The day-to-day business marketing we do here is vitally important. Events are ancillary, though they certainly work hand in hand with our mission."

National business briefs: Newspapers join online ad network

A group of 26 newspaper companies is joining an industry-backed online advertising sales network, QuadrantOne, aimed at winning more business from national advertisers. QuadrantOne will create a centralized pool of standardized ad units from newspapers across the country that can be sold in blocks to large advertisers.

Members of the venture include McClatchy Co., which owns The Kansas City Star; A.H. Belo Corp., owner of the Dallas Morning News; and Media General Inc. They effectively double the size of the network to about 250 newspapers. The venture was launched last month by Gannett Co., Tribune Co., Hearst Corp. and The New York Times Co.
