Driving Video Consumption: The Key To Capturing Advertising Dollars

In a May 1st post to this column, my colleague Tom Wilde questioned whether direct response or brand marketing would lead the inflow of dollars to the online video advertising market. While both forms of advertising are potentially applicable to what is expected to be a $4B (eMarketer) to $7B (Jupiter) market by 2011, a key question for content producers and media companies is how to capture a meaningful share of these ad dollars.

To answer this question, it is useful to understand the key growth drivers and their relative contribution to the anticipated market growth. For video advertising, Audience Development, CPM Increases, and Video Consumption are the most relevant factors. According to eMarketer, video advertising represented a $410MM market in the US in 2006. Using this as a base, let's analyze how these growth drivers might build to $4B by 2011:

Audience development: According to eMarketer, video consumption is expected to grow to 165MM US uniques by 2011, up from 88MM in 2006. more

Champ Car veterans, now IRL rookies, begin practice for

Servia made 125 starts in the former Champ Car series and once tried to qualify at Indy, while Wilson had four wins among his 54 Champ Car starts. Power was the Champ Car rookie of the year in 2006 and won that series' final race last week at Long Beach, Calif.

Ten of the 12 rookies completed all four phases of their test, led by Power with a top lap at 220.604 mph, E.J. Viso at 220.445 and Servia, Power's teammate at KV Racing, at 220.102. The only veteran on the track was Max Papis, who hasn't driven an Indy car in two years and was required to take a refresher test.

"It was a good day," said Power, a 27-year-old Australian who also had two Champ Car wins last year. "We crept up to it; we had a pretty solid car. I was happy to get flat all the way around. ... Now the challenge starts. more

Business Services Shipping Trucking Questions asked

Resolved Question: Where can I obtain the corporate office phone # or email for FedEx?

I do not see it listed on their website. Their "Customer Service" phone number has a bunch of idiots there who do not want to give the corporate number, because they know something is very wrong. I was shipped a very important package the other day via overnight, and it arrived and was on the truck for delivery that next morning. However, their driver said that "Customer not available or business closed - Signature required." They didn't even know if it was a residence or a business, and that's a very generic message, almost proving that they didn't even show up. Myself and another person were home during this time when they "attempted delivery" and they never showed up. They're saying we weren't. I've emailed their Customer Service, and also called on the phone...they're a bunch of idiots who are telling me "Monday" now for the "second delivery attempt." They haven't even had a first, yet. Where can I get the US corporate office email or phone number for this crappy place? Their regular customer service is merely skipping over the point of the issue and acting like it's my fault, when it's their driver's fault that they are covering up for. more

Resolved Question: Is this seller trying to scam me?

Hello, I am glad that you are really interested in my car. Regarding the price, to be honest with you...this was my brother car but he is not…anymore.I don't want to get rich by its selling, just want to give it to someone who will take good care....... As I already said in my first email the car is currently located in UK but still registered in US, so you won't have to pay anything since it have a clear US title, no lien. Also, the car is in perfect working condition and it was never been smoked in. I can have it shipped from here by an US Air Force cargo plane so there won't be any additional shipping costs. Also I can arrange for a truck to transport the car to your home address or, if you like, you can pick it up from the nearest airport in your area. The shipping will take up to 7 days, depending on your location. The car will arrive with all the papers and documents required for registration and the keys. The US clear title and the bill of sale will be already signed by me. The final price you will have to pay is $15,500. The payment must be done through eBay. Ebay Motors will work for us just like an escrow service, just that the transaction will be faster and also 100% secure for both of us. You will send them the payment, then they will let me know that the payment is OK and I can start the shipping. After the car will arrive to you and you will inspect it, you will let them know that, so they can forward the payment and complete the transaction. If the car is not as advertised and decide not to keep it (I'm sure this will not be the case) eBay will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back of the car will be my concern. I think this is fair for both of us. Please take into consideration that I will get paid only after you receive the car and make sure everything is as agreed. If you agree with these terms and you have the money, send me your full name and the address where you want the car to be delivered and I will initiate the transaction with eBay. You will receive all the transaction details from them. I will appreciate an answer as soon as possible. Also, feel free to ask me any question you may have. Thank you, Col. Lawrence S. I'm an US Air Force Col. currently stationed in UK and the car is here with me. It was bought in the US and shipped to Europe, but it was never permanently registered here, the car is still registered in the US. The shipping will take up to 7 business days and you will also have 10 days to inspect and test drive the vehicle from the moment it arrives at your place. There will be no extra or hidden taxes for you to pay since the car is still registered in US. In case you decide not to keep the car I'm responsible for shipping back costs. I must say that this is a US model car, with the steering wheel on the left side, as opposed to a UK model, that has the steering wheel on the right side. As I'm unable to travel in the near future and I don't have anyone back home to help me with the sale I decided to sell this car through eBay or craigslist. Our transaction will be entirely through eBay Motors and we both will be covered. The final price is $15,500 including shipping from Europe to the US and delivery to your home address. So if you decide to buy this car or need further information pleaseget back to me as soon as possible. Thank you and have a great day, Col. Lawrence S. Resolved Question: Does ebay motors really let you test the car for 5 days and then let you transfer the money to the seller..?

I found a SUV on Craigslist and the guy that's selling the SUV sent me this message after i agreed that i would like to buy the SUV Thank you for your swift response. In order for us both to feel comfortable with the transaction, I propose we close the deal through Ebay Motors, since they are the biggest and the most trustworthy online market place, under their Vehicle Purchase Protection Program (they will work like a third party in this transaction). Basically, it's similar to buying a truck locally, the money will be sent to their holding account, and they will keep the money until you will receive the truck. I will briefly describe the transaction steps so I can make things clearer for both of us: 1. Buyer and seller reach an agreement (price and delivery condition). 2. Seller sends all the details of the transaction to Ebay for registration. 3. Ebay will email us the forms on how to complete the transaction (invoice, payment details, buyer and seller protection policy) 4. Buyer sends the money to the Ebay Motors holding account. 5. Ebay Motors confirms to seller that the amount has been received. 6. Seller performs the required services (shipping, insurance). 7. Buyer receives the vehicle and has 5 days to inspect it. 8. Buyer accepts delivery and informs Ebay Motors about the acceptance. 9. Ebay Motors releases the money to seller. If you won't like the truck or if it is not as advertised, which I can assure you it won't be the case because it's a state of the art looking and working vehicle, it will be returned to me at my expense and you will receive a full refund from Ebay. I tried to be as clear as possible to be sure we are on the same page. I need your consent as well as your name and shipping address, so we can register the transaction with Ebay in order to receive their instructions step by step on how to complete the transaction safely. If you have other questions feel free to email me, I hope we can do business together. Resolved Question: craigslist scam???????

So I posted an ad on craigslist to sell a truck engine. The first response to my ad was asking if it was still available. I said yes and told them to call the phone number on the ad. So the guy sends me this......I really appreciate your response to my email. I want you to consider it sold, pls do withdraw the advert from CL to avoid disturbance, anyways I don't have time to come over to take a look because of my Business but you don't need to bother yourself with the shipment, I'll take care of that by engaging the services of a mover, hence I'll be sending a bank certified check and it will be delivered to you via United Parcel Service (UPS), so I'll need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check. Full name on the check. Full Physical address to post the check City, State and Zip Code Home & Cell Phone to contact you. Note that the payment will be shipped to your address via UPS NEXT DAY AIR SERVICE and I will like you to know that you will not be responsible for shipping i will have my mover to come over as soon as you have cashed the check N.B UPS does not deliver to a P.O box addresses. Thanks It seems pretty fishy. Resolved Question: Need help with shipping portion of sales contract?

I came up with a hypothetical fact scenario for my business law class and based on the scenario we are supposed to create a sales contract. Here is the scenario I came up with: Your Fine Motors is a truck rental company in Atlanta, Georgia that rents trucks, tractors, and trailers. Your Fine Motors also sells used vehicles to companies who are in any type of trucking industry. ATR Movers is a company in St. Petersburg Florida who provide intrastate and interstate packing and moving services, along with temporary storage. ATR currently has 10 trucks in its fleet, and is currently planning an expansion. ATR will need to purchase an additional 5 box trucks in order to go forward with its planned expansion. The trucks need to be purchased and available to the fleet within 2 months. I want to have ATR go to pick up their own trucks without the need for a 3rd party carrier, but I am having a hard time determining what this kind of contract would be called (shipment, destination, etc) and am also having a hard time finding another contract to look at as a guide. If anyone could please help or point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Why is everyone so critical of GM and Ford?

I can see a lot of criticism against GM and Ford, and many are saying we should let them go belly up. GM and Ford upper management have made some real selfish, bonehead moves, but shouldn't the individuals be prosecuted instead of the the entire company? If they sink, won't the rest of the economy sink with them? Last I checked, we are still a major exporter of vehicles, GM and Ford give jobs to millions of Americans and their existence in the US gives jobs to millions more in support businesses... Steel mills, materials, transportation, labor, etc. I think it's really hypocritical for people wonder why jobs are shipped overseas, criticize the government, then jump into their Honda, BMW, Hyundai, etc, and scratch their heads. I found another interesting bit on CNN about what GM and Ford have contributed to the US following Sept. 11th.... 1. Ford- $10 million to American Red Cross matching employee contributions of the same number plus 10 Excursions to NY Fire Dept. The company also offered ER response team services and office space to displaced government employees. 2. GM- $10 million to American Red Cross matching employee contributions of the same number and a fleet of vans, suv's, and trucks. 3. Daimler Chrysler- $10 million to support of the children and victims of the Sept. 11 attack. 4. Harley Davidson motorcycles- $1 million and 30 new motorcycles to the New York Police Dept. 5. Volkswagen-Employees and management created a Sept 11 Foundation, funded initial with $2 million, for the assistance of the children and victims of the WTC. 6. Hyundai- $300,000 to the American Red Cross. 7. Audi-Nothing. 8. BMW-Nothing. 9. Daewoo- Nothing. 10. Fiat-Nothing. 11. Honda- Nothing despite boasting of second best sales month ever in August 2001 12. Isuzu- Nothing. 13. Mitsubishi-Nothing. 14. Nissan-Nothing. 15. Porsche-Nothing. Resolved Question: can business owner refuse the customer in the middle of service?

I have shipped few packages of personal used items overseas last month and waiting for the transit to the city I live. Recently I got contacted by logistics company that shipping company has connection with and told I have to pay list of things for custom clearance, trucking and so forth. Since I am not a business importer and those extra costs was totally unexpected ( Shipping company has not explained all these before), I asked him detailed questions about estimate. I just got an e-mail now he wants me to find another logistics/shipping company(although I never hired him, the shipping company has chosen) yet I need to pay handling charge so far he has worked for me threatening he will not provide documentation I need. I understand the right to refuse the customer , but is it possible to do this in the middle of the service just because I asked him detailed questions?  more

Resolved Question: First week at new job supervisers Terrible?

7\1\08 I found on the first day my boss had marijuana in his company truck ashtray I land this new job im happy to be there we work on property commercial real estate im suppose to get my own truck. so i wont be riding with him often but on my first day of work we took a drive in his truck because there was an emergency at one of the sites when i noticed his ashtray is sitting wide open and there are like 50 marijuana joints in it so i said "Do you roll your own cigarettes? He says yea and chuckles" and pulls out a cigarette out of a pack 2 minutes later. So now im thinking I should report this to human resources when I went for the job they gave me a drug test and a hand book of how they run a tight ship. no sexual harassment, no under the influence, keep your vehicle clean, furthermore I had to take a drug test for the job and then this bull crap ...why isn’t this guy leading by example. What has this world come to? Then we stop and have lunch and he’s sitting there calling woman cunts and cursing like a drunken sailor and calling me Bro total lack of respect for anyone not to mention were eating at a clients restaurant (quiznos) to the point Jeff converse has to say “would you please watch your mouth your offending me”. The whole episode was straight appalling 7\9\08 Ok so today I go thru my normal routine things are all good I handle the daily routine issues a few emergencies at 2:30 I decided to go by the other sites and make the rounds visual inspections and possibly light maintenance of those site.and if time permits I will vacuum out the rear of the vehicle and bring it up to company standards,(or as was explained to me) and stop into the office to drop off my paper work see Stacia to make sure she had all the information she needed from me to complete my employment process so I get to the main office @ 3:30 attempt to vacuum out the company van and I find the power inverter will not power the vacuum I tried to power it from the other van and it did not work there either …so I proceeded to finish my work log report then at 3:45pm I stopped into the main office. Allison the receptionist was there I asked if Stacia was in she said she was not. Then I asked for Jeff converse to review the days HVAC issues in the Genzyme Building …Allison said he was not in so I said ok then I guess im done here thanks have a good night. Now its 3:50Pm I go get into my personal vehicle and get ready to leave and Jeff walker pulls in the parking lot I pulled over to him to see if he needed anything last minute and to ask him questions of how the power inverters work ..and he says to me “you cant leave at quarter of and they asked me to watch you so im going to have to report this” to which I explained yesterday I stayed a few minutes late and I wasn’t complaining and Jeff converse felt free to call me at 4:30 and I had absolutely no problem speaking to him regarding the days issues I also explained that the office asked me keep my cell phone on and to except calls regargding company business after hours and check the company computer for HVAC issues after hours & I was offered absolutely no compensation for these services therefore 10 minutes is a wash pretty much and he replied “oh you have to do that” to which I was a little confused by the reply . and when I was interviewing for the position Jeff converse explained he didn’t want a robot employee and micro management wasn’t going to be an issue because I could be called upon at any given moment to stay a little late to help out on projects or emergencies and he would like my cooperation in return in these cases or on knowledge I might have regarding past experiences ect reply and I acknowledged that it wouldn’t be a problem at all im very flexible. During emergencies or even for extra projects. so Jeff walker then stated he would address it with Jeff converse and I said I would also do the same I wasn’t trying to cheat the company in any way shape or form so I immediately asked him if he could assist me for the final 5 minutes with the power inverter to operate the vacuum and he explained the inverter would not provide enough power enough for what I was trying to do and we conversed about a project behind the metro 9 property Jeff walker provided me his insight and we wrapped up for the evening. 4:00PMwondering should i just speak to the human resource lady or should i just snd them a certified letter voicing my concerns?i feel like if i let them go on .a pattern will begin more

Resolved Question: How do I ship a Crate heavier than 175lbs in Canada? UPS and Purolator won't do it under any circumstance.

We have a large crate weighing 175lbs that both UPS and Purolator will not ship because we are not a business. They refuse to help with 'personal moves' as they called it. And normal service won't ship a package that large. They basically said the trucks would be wasting time coming out here, for something small like that. So we're left with what options? Moving companies? Unfortunately all the ones that I've been in contact with have HORRIBLE reviews here in Canada, and are all blacklisted some way or another. That, or they charge far too much, or offer little insurance. Any suggestions for people having shipped Large and heavy things in Canada before? 1.Perdue Farms, Inc., has been a privately held family owned company since 1920. Over the years Perdue has become vertically integrated in order to be more competitive and maintain financial stability. Perdue’s objective is to be the leader in broiler and related poultry products in the industry. They strive to maintain quality and constantly improve efficiency and service, both today and in the future. Perdue Farms Inc. has a mission to provide the highest quality poultry and poultry related products to retail and food service customers. They want to be the recognized industry leader in quality and service, providing more than expected from their customers, associates, and owners. They will accomplish this by maintaining a tradition of pride in their products, growth through innovation, integrity in the management of their business, and commitment to Team Management and the Quality improvement process. Perdue’s overall mission is strong but a strategy for long term growth and market development needs to be reviewed and evaluated. 2.Perdue Farms Inc. has numerous external opportunities and threats. The external opportunities that effect Perdue are as follows; •To broadly diversify and have greater market share, domestically and internationally •To increase marketing of healthy image products that envelops a strong niche market. •To ship via plane, to maintain fresh not frozen broilers and increase market share and penetration. •Develop new markets in the Upper Mid-west to increase market share. •Increase sales of food service chicken and turkey from 20% of overall sales to 30% due to a strong 12% growth rate. •To expand the international grain and oilseed market •With an increase push on health in 1994, chicken sales are up over red meat sales. •Average annual consumption of chicken is up to 80lbs/person/year, an all time high. The external threats are as follows: •Most of the competition sells frozen products for less money. •Perdue’s cost to raise chickens is above the national average. •Growth rate in chicken sales is only 5% due to lack of frozen line. •Over capacity of chickens has reduced wholesale prices, which reduces profit margins. •Competition is strong in broiler industry with 53 competitors. •Untapped markets in the Upper Mid- west need to be explored. 1.The Perdue Farms, Co. has internal strengths and weaknesses that need to be addressed and evaluated; The strengths are as follows; •Perdue is vertically integrated which means that they produce the chickens, they breed, hatch the eggs, they select the growers, build Perdue chicken houses, formulate and manufacture their feed, oversee care and feeding, operate their own processing plants, distribute via truck and marketing. They now also sell what used to be waste, such as the chicken feet that is sold to the Orient as a delicacy. •Privately held firm •Technologically advanced, ex.,20% more breast meat than the competition •Birds are fed organically and not feed additives. •Sell both raw and pre-cooked chickens and turkeys. •Good compensation package to the workers. •Non-union company. •MIS efficient and essential to operating the business. •Good variety from fresh oven stuffer roasters, cooked prepared foods, cutlets, tenders, Fit n easy and much more. •Good TQM with mission and vision •Excellent R&D for better meat to bone ratios. •Keep overhead low, quality up •Great diverse product line that has changed with consumer changes. •Horizontal diversification when they bought Showell Farms, which made them the third largest producer in the broiler industry. •Great social responsibility, code of ethics •Environmentally concerned about waste and prevention •Strong effective marketing The weaknesses in the Perdue Farm, Inc. case are as follows; •They only sell fresh not frozen chickens •Deliveries are only made by truck so the radius to overnight chickens is limited. •Lack of long-term planning for future changes 4) I would suggest a strategy that Perdue would focus on maintaining their quality and efficiency along with plans for extensive market development. I would like to see them expand into the Upper mid-west before other markets gain strong holds and market share. If Perdue plans on maintaining their place in the market they need to expand and continue to diversify their products to attract niche markets and stay ahead of the competition. According to Porter’s generic strategies, he points out that in order to gain the competitive advantage companies need to draw from three bases: cost leadership, differentiation, and focus. In my study of Perdue, I feel that they are a differentiation and focus orientated company. First, I see Perdue as a leader in quality and efficiency but not a cost leader. Cost leadership implies that you strive to be the low-cost producer in your particular industry. This is to the contrary for Perdue; they have marketed in a way to make the consumer pay a little more for a better product. In fact, this did not happen by accident. Perdue did not want to be known as the cheapest but to be the best quality for the consumer, at a fair price. What Perdue does take from cost leadership is that they are highly efficient, low overhead, their intolerance to waste, broad span of control, rewards linked to efficiency and cost cutting measures and open lines of communication between workers and upper management. Perdue’s successful strategy of horizontal integration to gain competitive advantage was to purchase Showell Farms which made Perdue the third largest broiler company in the United States. I see Perdue as being highly successful with differentiation, which implies that they produce products, and services that are considered unique, industry wide and directed at consumers who are relatively price-in-sensitive. Perdue has ongoing product development, which states that they seek to increase sales by improving, or modifying present products or services. Perdue has been an industry leader with constant attention paid to consumer wants and needs. They watch trends such as fitness and weight consciousness, by introducing the Fit n Easy line that markets skinless and boneless chicken parts with nutritional information and recipes. Perdue also followed the trend of the working family and began to market prepared foods, which has done extremely well. Prepared foods such as pre-cooked chickens, turkeys, parts, nuggets, and the like sell easily to working families. Finally, I see Perdue’s strongest strategy according to Porter is focus. Perdue has wonderful R&D that constantly follows market trends and changes that will be beneficial to their growth. Perdue has never forgotten where they came from and this is what makes them strong. Focus allows them to change with the times and not become over diversified where they overlook their cash cows and forget to nurture their stars. Perdue knows that quality and efficiency are at the heart of their operation and do not stray from that. Their innovation and integrity to be the leader has brought them customer loyalty and appreciation for quality where price is not the number one factor. Perdue’s ability to focus on strong team management has allowed them to penetrate and develop new markets with ease. Perdue has a high penetration of advertising on TV and print along with opening up new territories to further expand their market share. Their vision has been a good guide and has led them to a very successful value chain. Perdue’s attention to detail in every aspect of the business has been proven successful and the financial status of the company reflects it. Today, Perdue, is further expanding with new acquisitions and product lines. Their innovative thinking and drive to be the leader shows in all they do. In 1997 they started marketing their Café Perdue line and have seen slow, with steady success. Perdue’s prepared foods are selling incredibly well with the American family on the run. As of September 1998, Perdue made a new acquisition, toward horizontal integration, with GOL-PAK, a competitor in the foodservice and prepared foods business. The new relationship will further enhance Perdue’s prepared food and foodservice business. GOL-PAK specialized in the development and production of products primarily for the foodservice industry with a list including the top 100 chain restaurants. Perdue sees this as a significant purchase to enhance their reputation and make them strong contenders in the prepared food and foodservice industry. CEO, Jim Perdue, feels that they are well positioned in the market place and continued growth along with R&D will help them to maintain quality and efficiency, along with strong market penetration and market share. more

We do however, have a few shipping connections that we can put you in contact with to get an accurate quote. WHAT IS A BUY BACK? A BUY BACK IS A VEHICLE THAT WAS REPURCHASED BY THE MANUFACTURER DUE TO NON CONFORMITY ISSUES. MEANING THAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER COULD NOT HAVE THE VEHICLE FIXED TO THEIR SATISFACTION OR MANUFACTURERS SPECIFICATIONS. FURTHERMORE, THERE ARE TWO STATES IN THE UNION THAT HAVE VERY STRICT BUY BACK LAWS, OR MORE COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS STATE DEFINED LEMON LAW RULES. IN THESE STATES, IF THE “ORIGINAL OWNER” HAS A VALID COMPLAINT ABOUT THE VEHICLES PERFORMANCE, AND THE MANUFACTURER/ DEALERSHIP CANNOT FIX THE ISSUE TO THE CUSTOMERS SATISFACTION OR MANUFACTURERS SPECIFICATIONS. THE MANUFACTURER MUST REPURCHASE THE VEHICLE FROM THE CUSTOMER. THERE ARE TWO VERY INTERESTING ASPECTS CONCERNING THE BUY BACK. FIRST OF ALL, CALIFORNIA AND TEXAS ARE THE TOUGHEST. SO IF THE SAME ISSUE OCCURRED IN LETS SAY MICHIGAN. THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION WOULD PROBABLY NEVER BE REPURCHASED. SECONDLY, MOST ALL BUY BACK NONCONFORMITY ISSUES, LATER BECOME FACTORY RECALLS. FOR EXAMPLE, THE MAJORITY OF NISSAN TITANS AND ARMADAS HAD ISSUES WITH THE FRONT BRAKES VIBRATING UNDER BRAKING. NISSAN FOUND THIS TO BE A PROBLEM ATTRIBUTED TO THE MATERIAL USED IN THE BRAKE PADS. SO THEY IN TURN REVAMPED THE FRONT BRAKES AND FIXED THE PROBLEM. THEY LATER DUBBED THIS ISSUE “BRAKE JUDDER” AND IT OF COURSE, BECAME A FACTORY RECALL. SO TO SUM UP, IF YOU OWNED A VEHICLE IN CALIFORNIA OR TEXAS PRIOR TO THIS ISSUE BECOMING A FACTORY RECALL, THE VEHICLE WAS BOUGHT BACK. HOWEVER, IF YOU BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE AFTER IT WAS ANNOUNCED AS A RECALL, STATE ENFORCED LEMON LAW WOULD NOT PROVIDE YOU WITH THE SAME STRENGTH FOR ARBITRATION. SIMPLY BASED UPON THE FACT THAT A REMEDY WAS AVAILABLE, AND A REOCCURRING ISSUE WOULD PROBABLY OF NEVER TAKEN PLACE. ALL THIS MEANS, IS THAT WE THE DEALER CAN PROVIDE A GREAT PRODUCT TO OUR CUSTOMERS AT HUGE SAVINGS. FURTHERMORE, YOU ARE COVERED BY THE FACTORY WARRANTY, AND GIVEN AN ADDITIONAL BUY BACK WARRANTY FROM THE MANUFACTURER FOR FURTHER REASSURANCE. LASTLY, THE TITLE ON THE VEHICLE IS CLEAN AND NON-BRANDED. IT IS A WIN, WIN SITUATION FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED. more
