Opinion: The iPod earbud noise problem isn't simple, nor are your ears
Modern machinery produces a lot of sound, most of it because manufacturers are too cheap to install sound baffles. Even so, the iPod is being portrayed as the bad guy, and being the personal accessory of choice for just about everyone, that's where the news factor is. But hearing loss is a real, and very serious, problem of the industrial age. Machines make sounds which people can't hear, which also do a lot of damage. TIME Magazine: Q: How much hearing loss does an iPod cause? A: It depends on the person, it depends on how long you're listening, and it depends on the level at which you're setting your iPod. If you're using the earbuds that come with an iPod and you turn the volume up to about 90% of maximum and you listen a total of two hours a day, five days a week, our best estimates are that the people who have more sensitive ears will develop a rather significant degree of hearing loss — on the order of 40 decibels (dB). more
E&Y award winner Tammy May
BUSINESS woman and central region Young Entrepreneur of the Year Tammy May has helped thousands of South Australians stay out of debt.
For years she saw the impact that not being able to manage personal finances has on people, while she worked in debt recovery for a legal firm.
At the age of just 22, Ms May thought there had to be a better way to help those people who couldn't make ends meet.
Eight years later she has helped more than 4000 people by managing their finances, teaching them to break bad habits, reduce debt and to save money.
"I have always wanted to make a difference in people's lives by helping them to overcome debt,'' she said.
"MyBudget has helped me to realise my dream and assist hundreds of clients to embrace a new and better way of life.''
Ms May's business won her Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year award for the central region's young entrepreneur category last week. more
