McClatchy earnings continue downward trend The Business Journal of

The company also reported it is seeing increased earnings in its growing online business.

"We are not standing idly by," said Gary Pruitt, McClatchy CEO. "We are investing significantly in our online operations, including sales staff, realigning sales incentives to focus on driving sales and expanding online sales training budgets and efforts."

In the second quarter, the company's earnings were down 44.2 percent, from $44.2 million in the second quarter of 2007 to $18.8 million in the second quarter this year.

Both advertising and circulation revenue was down in the quarter and the half compared to the previous year periods.

Total revenue for the first half fell 14.7 percent to $978 million at the end of June. Total revenue in the second quarter fell 15.5 percent to $489.7 million, down from $580 million in the same period in 2007. more

Uni cutting consumption

BUNDOORA'S La Trobe University is one of three Whittlesea businesses that have answered the call to reduce its carbon footprint.

The university, Thomastown's Boral Bricks and Turi Enterprises have each been listed among 250 of Victoria's biggest water and energy users that are being asked to make plans to cut consumption.

The sites have used more than 120 megalitres of water or more than 100 terajoules of energy during 2006/07.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings said the new Environment and Resource Efficiency Plan program was asking businesses, including Melbourne Zoo, hospitals and shopping centres, to cut their resource use.

"(The) Environment Protection Authority will work closely with all participants to help them develop plans, which will save their businesses money as well as helping the environment," he said. more
