Smoke detector limits fire damage at business

HYANNIS � A smoke detector helped firefighters find a dryer fire before the fire could spread through a multi-business building on North Street last night.

An alarm company reported an alarm sounding at the Journey Studio & Spa at 259 North Street about 10:18 p.m., according to Hyannis Fire Capt. Eric Kristofferson.

There was no sign of fire from the building�s exterior or, after firefighters used a master key, inside the common area of the three-story building. Then a second alarm rang in the spa business on the third floor.

Firefighters forced their way into the smoky business and traced the smoke to a fire in a dryer. That fire was quickly extinguished.
The last person had left the business at 7:30 p.m. after turning on the dryer for its 63-minute cycle.

A highly acclaimed Indian banker who visited Sri Lanka from the Middle East last week said there were many opportunities for Sri Lankan professionals to tap the vast resources in the Middle East for Sri Lanka's economic development.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Doha Bank in the State of Qatar R. Seetharaman said the purpose of his visit was to promote bi-lateral trade, investment, banking and finance between the two countries.

He said there were over one million Sri Lankans employed in the Middle East. In the State of Qatar alone there were 130,000 Sri Lankans employed. Forty-five per cent of the world's oil and 22 per cent of the world's gas were in the Middle Eastern belt. With oil prices surging at 100 dollars per barrel there were vast investment opportunities in the Middle East. more

Delphi wins court OK to auction assets of damper business

WASHINGTON -- A federal judge said auto-parts supplier Delphi Corp. can auction the assets of its Kettering, Ohio, damper business, with Tenneco Inc. serving as the lead bidder with an $18.8 million offer.

Judge Robert Drain of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan on Thursday signed off on the auction, which Delphi plans to conduct by April 14. Bidders have until April 10 to submit their opening offers if they want to participate in the auction.

Drain will review the auction results at an April 30 hearing.

In court papers filed earlier this month, Delphi said the Kettering business won't fit within the portfolio of products it plans to produce after it exits Chapter 11 protection. The business makes shock absorbers for General Motors Corp., Delphi's former parent and biggest customer. more
