TMX Group profit up on Montreal contribution

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian exchange operator TMX Group Inc said on Wednesday its second-quarter profit rose 26 percent as the May 1 acquisition of the Montreal Exchange derivatives operation helped to boost its bottom line. TMX Group, which also runs the Toronto Stock Exchange, said net income was C$49.2 million ($48.2 million), or 65 Canadian cents a share, in the three months ended June 30. more

Saying the city is "in the vanguard of creativity," a national business magazine named Chicago its U.S. City of the Year on Monday. Fast Company magazine chose Chicago as part of its annual Fast Cities list, according to a release from the magazine. London was named Global City of the Year. "Fast Cities are worldwide centers of creativity that embody economic innovation and opportunity," Editor/Managing Director Bob Safian said. "These cities attract the best and brightest, and are great places to work and live. They are bursting with diversity -- in race, in culture and in business." What makes Chicago "fast," the magazine said, is its "economy is growing faster than New York's or L.A.'s. Resolved Question: A business has not provided the service i asked for. What rights do i have? What can i do?

I own a small clothing brand, and as part of my marketing i paid £300 to become a sponsor of a sporting event and a trade show, where'd id be able to take my garments to promote and sell my brand. I wanted something special for the event, so i decided to have a limited edition set of 50 shirts done, which had 2 extra designs printed on them. So the shirts should have had 1) the main design on the front. 2) numbered ltd edition redesigned label printed on the inside on the neck. 3) and a ltd edition logo printed on the back of the shirt. I ordered the shirts from American Apparel and they came 2 weeks late, which gave me 1 week to get them printed. I phoned my printer (screen printer) and explained that i was short of time and needed to get the shirts printed. He assured me that they would be done, with all three designs. i delivered the shirts on Monday morning, with the assumption they would be ready by friday ( the day of the event). The i got a phone call from the printer on thursday saying that he had done the main design on the shirts but becuase he processed the screens using natural sun light apposed to using a UV light box, and that because it was overcast he would not be able to print the two ltd edition prints. The lacking of a UV light box was not explained to me prior. I had one of my designers pick up the shirts and upon arrival the quality is questionable to say the least. Some are printed too thinly some are too thick and others look like they have been touched up with a tipex brush (no joke). I haven't paid him yet as we were dealing with this at a later date. I now want to know where i stand with what i have and don't have to pay him for. Becuase as far as i can see i have not been given what i asked for originally, and what i have been given is of questionable quality. This has also meant that it was a waste of money sponsoring the event since i was not able to market the product i had intended to. And for the record.....sales did not go well. Advice would be appreciated. more

June 11, 2009 Apple Care Service I’m very dissatisfied with the diagnostic evaluation that was performed on my iPod. There is no evidence of any external force, physical damage, of even a scratch. While listening to music the screen went white and then stopped. I find it easy for your company to simply pass this off as a damaged product to save money but let me make it clear I WILL NEVER AND ALL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANY OF YOUR PRODUCTS IF THIS IS NOT FIXED. I will give you one more chance to abide to the warranty that you so claim to guarantee. For the price of $150, and only one year warranty, I would expect your product to last longer than five months. Inside the return box that you sent back to my house was my original iPod and a copy of a mass printed APPLE CARE SERVICE FORM. The iPod was left to flop around inside the box unsecured with no support foam. Is this how all iPods are shipped??? The mass printed APPLE CARE SERVICE FORM looks to be a standard practice that your company just shipped back the customer. I think that my iPod was never inspected or troubelshooted to determine the problem. It probably never made it to a technician. In fact, I think someone is in place to receive, open the box, shove in a mass printed APPLE CARE SERVICE FORM, and send it back to the customer. Maybe he will pay more money to repair the problem. I will send this to all my E-mail accounts and to the consumer report business. I looked at the pin and noticed that a small corner was in fact chipped away. This was done from plugging in the charger. So for that I was told the warranty will not cover this defect. Now for the price of 139.00 plus shipping and handling they would replace the iPod. Watching television, a popular show is left on a cliff hanger until the 7 minute commercial break is over. Surfing the internet, a banner crosses the monitor disrupting a video or game. There are a number of ways in which advertising may try to persuade the public to buy their products. Advertisers are reaching consumers through everyday conveniences. Most would say advertisement is a way to promote information about services and products, but in most cases, it involves deception and manipulation. It may even trigger severe aggravation and irritation. Advertisers are using the manipulative approach instead of the clear, basic informative approach. Good advertising needs to convey the basic information about the product or service, but often, it takes advantage of the consumer by not including, or disguising some piece of relevant information that might make the consumer think twice about the product. An Advertiser’s objective is to try to make the consumer take the first step towards a specific company. This might make the consumer call an 800 number, go to a showroom, or be convinced that one product is better than another, by using any number of manipulating strategies and tactics. As consumers, people should beware of the media blitz of the advertising warlords. By watching almost any TV commercial, some might notice some fine print at the bottom of the screen. If read quick enough, the print explains that basically what is being advertised is not what the consumer is receiving. It might cost more, be a different color, different size, or not even be available at all. Media (TV, Radio, Internet. Etc.) is found to be the most effective approach for advertisers to reach the consumers. Companies pay anywhere from $10,000 to over $50,000 for actors or celebrities to expose their products in music, movies, television and their everyday lives. This kind of exposure is called product placement. This form of advertising originated in the late 1800’s during a film called Défilé du 8e Battalion. It featured a wheelbarrow with a sunlight soap logo on the side of it. Thus, the business of product placement had begun. Product placement is effective because consumes are more likely to be engaged during a show or movie than during the commercial breaks. The opposite of product placement is said to be called “reverse product placement.” "Reverse product placement" takes "faux product placement" a step further, by making products in real life to match those seen in a movie or TV show. For example, in 2007, 7-Eleven remodeled eleven of its American stores as "Kwik-E-Marts", selling some real-life versions of products seen in episodes of the Simpsons such as Buzz Cola, Duff Beer and Krusty-O's cereal. Although most advertising is manipulative, people rely on it to expose them to new products and services being offered. Informative advertisements provide clear facts and data. A commercial for a dishwashing soap shows how effective one brand works compared to another brand. That’s important for a consumer to see when deciding which brand to purchase. Informative advertising is almost the complete opposite of manipulative advertising. They are relevant to consumers’ interests, they try not to interrupt, and they are informative with clear facts and data. Although informative advertising seems useful, Advertisers often take the manipulative approach to promote their informative product or service. Informative advertisements aren’t well known and tend to be ignored. Advertisements are ruining our society. According to Capital City Weekly, the average household receives over thirty four pounds of advertisements by mail each year. That’s a total of 4.5 million tons of advertisements mailed each year. Unfortunately, studies find that children are the biggest target of all advertising. Kids represent an important part of population to marketers because they have their own purchasing power. They influence their parents' buying decisions and they're the adult consumers of the future. A recent study conducted by the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth found that the top 15 programs in 2003 had alcohol in their ads. That is a wrong example to be setting for our next generation of voters, politicians, doctors, and the future generation of America.
