Spend More, Spend Better … See ROI Rise

But there's one area marketers should be increasing their budgets: search engine marketing. The truth is, you can't afford NOT to increase your search marketing spend – because SEM consistently delivers the highest bang for your buck. In other words, since SEM spending is measurable, marketers can adjust it to the level where it is most effective in terms of ROI. Furthermore, that ROI is often higher than email and banner advertising; some studies show that SEM converts at twice the rate of email and banners.

During tough economic times, marketers need to obtain the highest ROI on each and every campaign, and attempt to maintain their volume goals as well. That's why right now you need to spend more on the methods that work best to convert browsers, and less on experimental campaigns that don't necessarily deliver sales results. more

IBM lays the rules down

ILOG's business rules engine fills a key gap in the WebSphere Process server Business Process Management (BPM) line, and most notably, we saw IBM's SOA strategy vice president Sandy Carter keynote ILOG's conference. IBM's not going to haul out the big guns for any sub-$200m software company.

ILOG has had a case of multiple attention disorder for a number of years. Otherwise, how could you explain that a company of ILOG's size would have not one or two but three separate product families that targeted almost completely different markets? Or that a $180m company could support 500 partners? ILOG was best known to us and the enterprise software world as one of a handful of providers of industrial-strength business rules management systems. That is, when your rules for conducting business are so conditional and intertwined, you need a separate system to keep them from gumming up into a hairball. more

Q2 2008 Earnings Call Transcript

We have two engines to drive growth in this space, the technology itself, which provides so much customer value and the sales and marketing organization which thrives on making sure every last customer knows what that value will mean to them.

In that regard you will see that we've also continued to feed the R&D machine with new cash and new technology. Near the end of last year I started signaling that our R&D expenditures would climb over the coming quarters as we accelerated several new product developments.

We still believe that 5% to 7% of sales is the right level of R&D for this Company and we anticipate that our current spending will continue within that range. In addition to the work we're engaged in on our existing products, we're making progress in getting the team established for our new 3-D imaging technology acquired in our transaction with DPI. more

Open Question: How would you establish your products/services if you will move your company to a new vicinity?

Our office, Boshima Business Center has been three years renting space in a building in Los Baños; being a wholesaler of agriculture machinery, equipment and supplies. We have established our products as well as good relations with customers in this area. We are planning to move our office at the end of April in my boss' place in Calamba to remove the cost of renting. I would like to know, what ideas could you think of to make the people of Calamba know our product given that we are new in the place? How could we make people get interested to go and see our products and services? Share your ideas via personal message or by commenting on my page. I know that your suggestions could make other groups grow their knowledge too. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: Not sure what I am doing wrong! Job situation!?

I have a bit of a dilemma I am not sure what to do. I applied for two jobs through a company, a huge national well services company. Well at a local branch they had 2 openings one for an HR generalist and one for a Dispatcher. I applied for both. I applied for the dispatcher before the HR Generalist. I am currently getting a Master's Cert in from Villanova (I already have a Bachelors in industrial sociology) and now working on the HR management from Villanova, will be done in a couple months. This is the bottom of the totem pole HR job within their company. It even says on their website. The other job is a Dispatcher, you basically schedule trucks coming in and out of the branch. NOTHING related to the years of school I put in. It requires a high school diploma. Only reason I applied for it is because of the bad job market, I just need a job. Well, they called me for the dispatcher! I am really upset, and CONFUSED. My resume says I have a bachelors and am going for a Masters Certificate in Human Resources Management and they haven't called me for a basic HR position but they will call me for a High school diploma Job? this is a rural area in PA with a 36% college degree rate, there's no way there can be THAT many people applying for this job that they would pass me up like that! What am I doing wrong here?? I think its kind of insulting they called me for that and not the HR Generalist at the same branch. (in a small way I am mad) Its just a very small branch. I put in $40K of school towards what this job is geared for and Im getting called for the high school diploma job? What?! What am I not getting. I have years of business experience in customer service, business, office, clerical, and getting more education. I called and accepted my interview for the Dispatcher, but I was just unsure of what to say. I was thinking of calling the guy that called me for an interview back and asking about the HR job, but would that make me look unprofessional or ruin my chances for the dispatcher job (which pays more than I am making now, I know through a source) I am really not trying to be rude or anything, but just realistic in my job choice. I have loans to pay back and need to support myself. What should I do? I want to be professional so I maintain my chances for this HR job, I just want to follow up on it and have a chance for it without being rude about the Dispatcher job. Is this possible or am I screwed at this point for lack of a better term? Please ---- SUGGESTIONS NEEDED on a professional way to handle this! This is a big company, I dont know if maybe this branch doesn't even decide, I don't know? more

Resolved Question: Business etiquette question - Gift giving?

I have always worked in the human service field and it is nothing to give a gift to someone you work with (peer, supervisor, other departments). It is just seen as a nice gesture and nothing more. I am now working it what would be considered a business field. There are a few people I would like to give a box of Godiva chocolates to but am not sure how this will be received. Situation: Three offices, I worked as a field employee for the main office, when the other two remote offices opened I was transferred to the office that was closest to my home still working in the same position. Main Office: There is a supervisor that oversee's all three offices, very nice woman would like to give her a box of chocolates. Main Office: The manager of this office still manages it but I am not longer under his management, would like to send him a box of chocolates and a thank you note. Second office: I do not work in any way directly with the manager if this office but we still talk some business on the phone and have had lunch. He was my direct supervisor at the old office. He does not eat chocolates, I have another gift I would like to give him. (I enjoy photography as a hobby. he and his wife came to my area last year for their anniversary. I took a photo I think he will like, I was planning to frame it for him) Second Office - A man that was not my direct supervisor but that I went to for advice allot, he and I no longer work in any way together, but have spoke since the offices split. Very nice man, would like to give him a box of chocolates. What are your thoughts on gift giving in a business setting? All four of these people are exceptionally nice people, I used three of them as references when applying for a higher position winthin the same company.I don't know if it matters but the value of the Godiva Chocolates is about $45.00 the value of the photo probably the same if I were to sell it. more

Voting Question: Do We Really Want Government-Run Health Care?

I have experience with both private health insurance and medical services in the United States and Mexico. In Mexico there are two sources for medical care, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) and servicios privados (private services). Here, my insurance covers major medical. I am able to receive medical services from any doctor and hospital I want. If I'm unhappy with a doctor, I simply go to another. My insurance will pay whoever I want to use and doctors compete for my business. Patients are seen whether they can pay, or not. I've been treated alongside the rich and poor with no insurance. Here, no one is turned away. In Mexico, you either go through IMSS or pay cash. You can find excellent care in Mexico, but you will pay cash, in advance, or they will simply say, "lo siento, no dinero, no servicios". You can be bleeding to death and you will be shown the door if you cannot pay in advance in the private offices. If you are Mexican within IMSS, you WILL wait for hours or days to see your primary, assigned doctor. The IMSS doctors generally are the bottom of the barrel. If you're a female patient within IMSS and Dr. Sexoso wants to grope you or talk dirty to you, you simply endure, because you have no choice. If Dr. Sexoso will send you to a specialist, you will wait for many months to get an appointment with a specialist, often in a distant city. If you need a specialist NOW, you are out of luck. Often, families will somehow raise the money to send a family member to the medico privado. IMSS is universally hated among Mexicans, but that is government-run health care in Mexico. For the patient with some money, you get prompt, professional care today. Just pay in advance for everything, gracias. Why should we expect anything different here, under ObamaCare?Pissing, I cite Mexico, instead of the countries you admire because I have experience with Mexico. I understand their socialized system of health care. If you have equivalent experience to mine with Canada or EU, I invite you to ask your own question citing your personal experience. I believe we have more in common with Mexico than most realize. Government-run health care gets the bottom 10% doctors. 'Dr. Sexoso' is a real doctor, wait time is terrible and specialists take months to see, if you're lucky. For those with cash, you get the best of the best and the red carpet. We'll be more like Mexico than you want to believe. more

Voting Question: I am somewhat self conscious about my weight and the amount of money I make, should I be?

I am 6'3" I weight 202-204lbs. I work in the medical field and make, combined with investment and salary, $60,000. I am a single guy and one of my academic field of study was business economics, so I know how to spend money and I know about investment (I estimate that the value of what I spend my money on is double of what I spend, so I get about $120,000 worth of goods and services/year). I feel uneeducatedted, sort of, but I have 132 total credits, so I am educated average. My GPA was in the 3.50-4.00, closer to 4, but I feel dumb, too? IDK. I guess I feel dumb and poor. Again, I am single and make $60,000, where does that live me? I have 2 associated degrees: business, and medical office as well as a minor in economics. Part of me is debating about becoming an economist, but that's 2 more years of school. Another issue I have not become confindent on. But, I feel fine and probably will just stay as I am, a medical office assistant. It's been 4 weeks....haha. I think I like you're thinking. I got laid about 5 times from Jan 18-Feb 18, and then it just hasn't happened since.I don't defy economics. If I spend $5.00 on something that I value as $10.00, I double my income. It's a concept called consumer surplus. As far as my income, I make $35,000 from my job and $25,000 from investments. I won a law suite because of a mistake during my birth, I have CP. I have a very IQ though, so don't get the wrong idea. I have about $200,000 which I hope to get a 7% return avg in my lifetime over 40 years....that itself is 3.2 million, and I kind of count that as income. The money I make as a medical office assistant will be totaly expenditure, no saving at all. I will shop and find amazing deals. I do it all the time. I walk out the door with $5.00 go to sal val and get 3 shirts worth 18 dollars a piece...I make 54-5=49. And, that's just one day. I mastered micro economics. macro is a little more tricky. high IQ, did I say? more

Resolved Question: How did ACORN and self proclaimed left wing terrorist groups cause the US housing collapse?

Article from Investor's Business Daily http://www.investors.com April 2,2008 Award-Winning Shakedown Artist Is Still Peddling Subprime Politics By MICHELLE MALKIN | Posted Wednesday, April 02, 2008 4:30 PM PT Last week, a mob of screeching protesters invaded the Bear Stearns headquarters in Manhattan demanding more aid for homeowners. I oppose federal bailouts of every make and model — and that includes both the Bear Stearns deal and the bipartisan stimulus-palooza in Washington. But the bank-bashers who held their demonstration in New York City against Bear Stearns and JPMorgan are totally unhinged. And out of control. Here is the face of the entitlement culture gone mad: "We will go to their neighborhood, we will educate their children on what their parents do. They should be ashamed," said Neighborhood Assistance Corp. of America founder Bruce Marks, in a nasty warning issued to employees of both banks. This is not an idle threat. Bruce Marks is no harmless lone nut. He has a proven record of showing up at children's schools and bullying them because of their parents' employment. All in the name of "social justice," of course, and securing loans for every last bad risk on the face of the planet. He's so proud of his behavior, he calls himself a "bank terrorist." Has he earned scorn and condemnation? Of course not. As a reward for his tactics, the Boston Globe named him "Bostonian of the Year" in 2007. The paper praised his "sensible innovation." They fawned over his "curious blend of in-your-face activism, customer-focused service, Machiavellian angling, and social-justice passion." And, as the Globe reported in its cover feature on Marks, there is no line of decency this housing shakedown artist won't cross. Welcome to the subprime politics of personal destruction: "Marks and his yellow-T-shirted followers have swarmed shareholders' meetings with enough force to shut them down. They have picketed outside the schools attended by the children of bank CEOs, pressing the youngsters in signs and chants to answer for the actions of their daddies. And they even once distributed scandal sheets to every house in one CEO's neighborhood, detailing the affair he was allegedly having with a subordinate. In time, that CEO, like most of the others that NACA targeted, sat down with Marks and signed a deal. "To those who found his tactics an outrageous invasion of bank executives' personal lives, Marks refused to acknowledge any line between home and work. 'What you do is who you are,' he says. 'It's all personal.' " My leftist opponents have labeled me a "stalker" for publicizing the public contact information of anti-war activists who ran military recruiters off their college campus — and for researching, documenting and challenging the assets of a two-property-, three-car-owning Democratic poster family held up as unassailable arguments for massive government health insurance expansions. Meanwhile, housing entitlement bully Bruce Marks gets citizen-of-the-year accolades while rolling in housing hustle dough. You see, it's all about the money for Marks' group, which browbeats banks and lenders into billion-dollar deals to allow its left-wing activists to arrange mortgages for their high-risk constituents. NACA — with dozens of offices across the country — has a no-down-payment, no-closing-costs, low-interest-rate policy for low-income minority borrowers and takes a hefty fee for each transaction. NACA loan applicants are then required to attend workshops glorifying the group's protest thuggery. Those whose loans are approved must then pledge to assist the group in five "actions" (like the one at Bear Stearns' headquarters) per year. When they're not clamoring for more homeowner funds and federal Community Reinvestment Act money, they're bombarding the feds with regulatory complaints to halt any bank mergers or expansions. Those radical actions have yielded a windfall as fearful corporations fork over money to pre-empt Marks' extortionist mau-mau-ing. In 2003, Citigroup coughed up $3 billion in mortgage loans to NACA through 2013. Bank of America, which first partnered with (succumbed to) NACA in 1995, handed over $6 billion through 2015. Let me repeat the threat Marks issued at the Bear Stearns protest last week: "We will go to their neighborhood, we will educate their children on what their parents do. They should be ashamed." If any prominent liberals have criticized Marks' tactics, I haven't heard them. Have you? Lesson learned: Screaming "racist" pays. Copyright 2008 Creators Syndicate, Inc more

Resolved Question: Is anyone other than me about fed up with the USPS?

The U.S. Postal Service does not even try to be competitive, they just keep raising rates and service just keeps getting worse. They have their fingers in stationary, stuffed animals, pins, framed items, phone cards.... Like, YES, the next time I need a gift for someone, I'm going to the p.o. Right. NOT. Why don't they try to do really well the one thing they do best: deliver mail.I know mail delivery is mind boggling in concept, especially world-wide. But the USPS complains always and raises rates. Don't any of the management there have a business degree? Are post offices in other countries trying to sell toys and collectibles? The whole idea of a collectible is something that is saved. If something is produced JUST TO BE A COLLECTIBLE...how collectible is that? Duh.They complain they have to raise rates because of internet and email. How come they didn't have to raise rates because of telephone?O, I am po'd with the p.o. more

Resolved Question: Does anyone work in HR (Human Resources) My friend has been in for a big shock!:?

Does anyone work in hr, human resources?? It's just that my friend started 2 weeks ago, and she was sent on client site, the lady she works under, he rline mgr suggested that she dress in a certain way for the client meeting, so she ibliged, and has no issues with this. But when she got there the deal had already beend one, the type of business is IT support, services, I mean she was really confused, so she thought thats it. But later the cto, or ceo, or whom ever he was had drinks with her and her colleagues. And they ended up staying out for the eve up top 6.30, he then took her back to his office, and he made advabces on her. when she refused, he told her that your fresh of the shelf, I thought we understaood each other, or somthing.... Anyway, she was left with knwo choice, and spent the night with him. She later over heard her line mgr, and other mgrs using teh phrase sweetend the deal ove rthe phone. Now does this sort of thing happpen in every company?? in human resources?? I ask because she isn't happy, she is very attractive, she is mixed race. How can she stop this from happening again, and keep her job at the same time? Thanks in advance. Tovia more

Resolved Question: Helpful tips on networking at an after hours work function?

I have been asked to attend a real estate function in about a week where I will be networking with area realtors and trying to seek new business for my office. I have never been to an event like this and I am nervous. I get very anxious in crowded places where I don't know anyone. I'm planning on bringing plenty of business cards and I have lots of "talking points" about our real estate products/services. My problem is actually walking up to someone and initiating that conversation. I want to represent my company well, but I'm afraid I won't make as good an impression as my superiors would like. What are some helpful tips on casual networking/overcoming my anxiety? more

Resolved Question: Postal Service stopping Saturday delivery?

I'm all for this idea. The most important mail we get through the carriers are bills. Businesses are closed on weekends (thus do not send out or receive mail), so having no delivery on Saturdays is not going to affect our bills. The other most important mail we get is invitations for family evens, etc, & it won't hurt anyone to receive them 1 day late. I say if it saves money & it's not absolutely necessary, than lets cut back & end Saturday deliveries. Also, it seems like the post office raises their prices/stamps almost every year - that's a dumb move. With free online bill pay & email, etc, people are using that as their main delivery service to save money. The more the post office raises their prices, the more people will pay/send more bills/invitations will be sent via the web. I'm sure that's what caused them to raise their prices in the first place, but the more they raise the prices, the more they'll lose customers, not save money. more

Resolved Question: What is the deal with the NYPD background investigator?

Im going to try and make this short. I am currently going through the hiring process with the NYPD. So far, So far I passed my medical screening and this friday I will be taking the written psychological exam (800 questions long). I am suppose to be meeting with my assigned investigator (within 10 business days according to the instructions given to me). It took me a few days to get a hold of him. Once I did I told him that I had all the proper documents as requested and filled out all of my paper work. He then tells me that he hasnt recieved my medical record yet from the NYPD medical unit (Its been a 8 days since I took my medical exam). He then told me that once he recieves my record he will send me a letter with a report date stating when to go see him with all my documents. Now Im not sure, but is this common amongst the background investigators? I feel like they are taking their time. I am sure there are loads of applicants to go through, but if my instructions is to contact my investigator within a time period, isnt it kind of necessary for the medical unit to send my files to the investigator quickly? The next academy class starts in 2010. So it would be ideal for me due to the fact that I will be graduating college (after 4 years of service in the marines under my belt). So is this normal when it comes to dealing with the investigator? especially when they dont return my phone calls, and at one time I had to call his office number more than 4 times in a row to get someone on the phone. Any advice on this stressing matter would be appreciated. more

Voting Question: This project is due at school. I am confused on it. can any one help? I need a service and y?

While attending this class, you also work at DigiFast, a small company that creates and markets video games for educational and entertainment markets. DigiFast recently moved into River View Plaza, a four-story office building in Portland, Oregon. River View Plaza includes a lobby with a security desk and several suites on all four floors. DigiFast occupies a typical suite that includes offices for managers, full-sized cubicles for employee workstations, a conference room, and restrooms. There is a break room with a refrigerator and a microwave, but, unfortunately, the break room is on the first floor, and DigiFast is on the third floor. DigiFast is new and growing fast. The company needs more employees, but the operating budget will not allow for it presently. Meanwhile, the goal is to make the operations efficient while keeping the current employees happy. You think one way to achieve this goal is by attracting outside services to the building. The other businesses in the building are similar in size to DigiFast but focus on markets other than software: a dentist, a young lawyer, and an insurance company. The building also has several spaces not yet rented. At capacity, the building can accommodate approximately 1,300 people. The location of River View Plaza is ideal, and the size of the office is adequate. However, the owners of the building supply space but little else in the way of service. The entrepreneurial spirit in you views this as a golden opportunity to attract a new service for DigiFast and other companies in the building. Your task is to convince your colleagues, manager, the owner of DigiFast, and the building management company your service has great potential and would be useful for your company’s employees and others in the building. A committee of key individuals will make the decision to move forward . . . or not. The committee consists of the following: •Charlotte Alexander, the founder and owner of DigiFast. She has a master’s degree in computer engineering and has spent 20 years working in IT industries. Charlotte is interested in efficiency and company growth. •Mark Jackson, your manager: Mark was recently recruited from a major video marketing company. He has an MBA from a prestigious university and two years’ work experience. Mark cares about the bottom line—he favors creativity as long as profit does not suffer. •Stacie Matthews, computer programmer: Stacie is currently working on her undergraduate degree in computer programming. She has extensive experience in developing video games but wants to finish her education to advance in this industry. Stacie is practical and creative. •Dave Martinez, graphic designer: Dave is a self-taught graphic artist who has won numerous awards for his designs. He is imaginative and innovative. •Steve Taylor, facilities manager: Steve is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day maintenance of the building, as well as renting available space to companies compatible with the businesses in the building. Although he is friendly and easygoing, Steve expects a job to be done right. Task Your task is to choose a service you think would be useful for DigiFast and most employees in the building. Remember: The goal of the service is to increase efficiency of operations and/or keep the current employees happy. As you think about the argument you will ultimately present to the committee, consider the different needs and personalities of the five committee members you have to persuade. All of the committee members have to agree on your service. You also need to anticipate any objections they might have as well as ways you can overcome those objections. more

Resolved Question: Are you willing to go to jail to help illegal aliens?

There is a major crackdown on companies and individuals who hire illegal aliens. Are you willing to get locked up and fined so you can get cheap labor? Is it even worth it? Please answer I am curious? http://www.ice.gov/pi/news/newsreleases/articles/070618kansascity.htm Roofing companies indicted for money laundering, conspiring to hire illegal aliens KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Several area roofing companies here, along with their owners and several employees were indicted by a federal grand jury for using a workforce composed largely of illegal aliens. U.S. Attorney John F. Wood, Western District of Missouri; and Pete Baird, assistant special agent in charge for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Office of Investigations in Kansas City, announced these indictments today. ICE agents served arrest warrants this morning in an enforcement action that resulted in arresting six of the nine individuals charged in the indictment. In addition, 34 illegal aliens were arrested on administrative charges. "Today's indictment alleges that the roofing companies utilized a business model that relied upon hiring illegal aliens," Wood said. "In fact, the indictment alleges that when his workers were arrested and deported, the business owner helped pay to have them smuggled back into the country a few days later so he could put them right back to work." Tony Evans, 48, of Stilwell, Kan., and Luis Hernandez-Bautista, 33, aka Miguel Hernandez, of Kansas City, Mo., who is a U.S. permanent resident, were charged in a 15-count indictment returned under seal by a federal grand jury on May 29. Also charged were several roofing businesses with which they are associated: Mid-Continent Specialists Inc. (doing business as New Century Roofing), Metro Roofing Services Inc., LH Roofing LLP, and LHB Roofing Inc. Finally, the indictment also charged Mario Bautista-Ojendiz, 26, a Mexican national, of Grandview, Mo.; and the following six Mexican nationals with unknown addresses: Jose Juan Bello-Lazaro, 35, Dante Cardillo-Rendon, 25, Gaudencio Bautista, 32, Victor Manuel Castanon-Flores, 26, Armando Hernandez-Gonzalez, 31, and Abel Montiel-Angel, 38. The indictment was unsealed and made public today upon the arrests and initial court appearances of several defendants. more

Resolved Question: Company to print full color header cards for retail locations?

I am searching for a company that can print header cards that are used to hang products on peg board in a store. Something full color, 3x5", glossy, peg hole, and possibly on a roll so that I could load it onto a printer in the office to add the product details such as sku and barcode. I would think this would be all over the internet for companies offering this service but I can't find a darn thing, only 1 or 2 places. What printer would you suggest to print the details in house on them? I am a small business with about 200 products but trying to make this as effecient as possible. Any suggestions would be great, possibly even a small business forum where people discuss these things. more

Resolved Question: How many times has the Fed Govt passed "extensions" to the length of time people can collect unemployment?

I am really started to get upset at our govt - I believe Bush passed the first extension period just prior to when he left office & the economy started tanking - then Obama since he's been in office has passed atleast one more extension, maybe TWO now, I'm not sure - now on today's news I heard they are proposing ANOTHER xx month extension to people on unemployment ! I mean, give me a Break. First we have the Highest deficit in the history of our country, we are basically broke as a country financially - We, he (Obama), everyone "wants" to improve the economy, and get people Back to work, right? Good lord, look online or in the classifieds, or any job search tool - there are SO many jobs going unfilled right now. Many people seem like they do not WANT to work any more !! Do other people notice this lately? I mean, originally unemployment lasted what was it, 3 or 6 months total, right? Then Bush passed some XX month extension, not sure how many more months that was added to the original time. Then Obama gets in office and he starts adding More and More extensions to the total time a person can collect unemployment. Where is this going to END !! I mean, why don't they just start PAYING people to stay home for 4 or 5 years or longer, and not work at all ? (oh I forgot, they already have a good program that does that, Welfare) I lost my job like millions of others did, back in 2008. My company completely shut down and laid off over 100 people. Yes it was horrible. I know what its like to lose your security, your income, your job, your career, its AWFUL. But come ON folks, you cannot stay home and sit with your thumbs up your arse for months and years, living off our already bankrupt federal government !! Take a lower paying job !! Take one that you thought was "below" your ability or skills if you have to. I did !! I was a manager with a large construction firm that built new homes for KB, Ryan, Arthur Ruttenberg, Pulte, etc. We all know what happened to the housing industry & construction. But I got another job just a couple months after being laid off - working at Lowes home improvement store. Sure it pays less than what I made, and it might not be as "impressive" to people that make a big deal out of job titles & status - but the point is I am WORKING and not collecting charity sitting at home doing nothing - I am SO sick of these constant extensions to Unemployment the govt is going - Is anyone else ?? Another thing to consider if you are one of the people thats been collecting u/e for 6 months, a year, or longer - WHO is going to hire you after your resume shows you sat at home for a year, 2 years, 3 years, longer ?? No hiring manager in his right mind would want to touch a person who's been doing NOTHING but living off the government and sitting idle for the last xx years. Go out there and take a job - walk down Main St and tell each store manager or owner that you will work & do any job he/she needs for $xxx a week !! I know several people who pounded the pavement, offered their services to businesses, stores & restaurants who did not list any openings, and got hired by just offering their skills/services for a reasonable price. Look, I used to make $35/hour. I make just under $15/hr now. But I like my job, I am thankful for what I have, and you just have to make adjustments to your standard of living and your spending, that's all. Please folks, I know so many guys & gals right now who are just laughing and sitting home since 2008 or 2009, doing nothing, and collecting unemployment, and laughing every time the Fed passes another extension for them. Don't do this. Its not right, and its just taking advantage of the system. Our country needs people to WORK and contribute to the GNP, and earn/spend MONEY. Not take charity from the government for months and years, without even trying to get a job.Scott - thanks for the reply, glad you agree - I too have several friends, and "friends of friends" who actually been going around bragging this past year or 2, about how they just keep getting one extension after another, and they've been goofing off and even working side jobs for cash under table WHILE collecting the damn unemployment. That really ticks me off. The whole situation is just not working any more - but I do have much sympathy on your job plight - some areas are very very hard to find work, some towns and counties have SO much unemployment, and relatively few employers, every job has like 500 people applying for the one job ! I was lucky getting into Lowes. I did not use the "job search" engines and all that online mumbo-jumbot (hotjobs, careerbulder, monster) - I just walked into the Lowes in my area, dressed nicely, looked good, spoke well, and courteously asked to speak to the store manager - he said he has some part time work he could likely get me hired for. Lucky. more

Resolved Question: When will organized labor realize that democrats are taking their money and votes and running?

Instead of blaming republican obstructionists during a democratic majority in Washington DC? (AP) WASHINGTON - Labor’s high hopes for major gains under President Barack Obama and a Democratic Congress have dimmed, raising fresh doubts about union leverage even in the best of political times. Prospects for a health overhaul have faded. Even slimmer are the chances of achieving labor’s chief goal, passage of a bill making it easier for unions to organize workers. A bipartisan jobs bill passed this week by the Senate drew tepid praise from the AFL-CIO president, Richard Trumka, who called it a "Band-Aid on an amputated limb" _ far short of what unions wanted. This wasn’t what unions expected a year ago after spending more than $400 million to help elect Obama and increase the size of Democratic majorities in the Senate and House. Leaders of labor’s largest federation will try to figure out how to refocus their political agenda when they begin their annual meeting in Orlando, Fla., on Monday. Another setback came in January when two Senate Democrats joined Republicans in blocking the appointment of labor lawyer Craig Becker to the National Labor Relations Board. Becker has worked for the AFL-CIO and Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Republicans have said they fear Becker would push the board to require companies to recognize unions if they can get a simple majority of employees to sign union cards _ the same "card check" measure that’s stalled in Congress. Labor leaders were counting on Obama put Becker in the post when Congress was out of session. They were disappointed when Obama said he wouldn’t do it anytime soon. "Enough is enough," Trumka said in an e-mail to labor activists. He urged union members to call the White House and "demand that President Obama fight Republican obstructionism" on Becker’s nomination. Some labor experts say unions have come up flat in mounting an effective liberal response to "tea party" activists who helped Republican Scott Brown win the special Senate election in Washington to succeed Democrat Edward M. Kennedy, who died last year. An AFL-CIO poll showed that 49 percent of union households supported Brown. "There’s been no indication that there’s muscle behind their money," said Leon Fink, a labor historian at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "There was no equivalent mobilization for public works or for a progressive health care measure." Even more troubling for unions, their membership in the private sector fell 10 percent during Obama’s first year in office to a historic low of 7.2 percent. A poll this past week from the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found that 41 percent of those surveyed have a favorable view of unions, compared with 58 percent in a similar survey in 2007. http://kstp.com/business/stories/S1439269.shtml?cat=1 more

Resolved Question: help with finding this show from bbc?

okay a while back i watched two episodes of this show. it was on the bbc iplayer and now i cant find it no more. It was about about a group of people who were not the smartest people and they worked in a basement dealing with the postal services and admin work for an insurance claiming business. There were two guys who always pretend to be someone such as 'bruce lee' and would start play fighting. during one of the episodes, a woman who was waiting for a check from an insurance claim, the check went missing. her pictures were posted on the walls around the office. I think it was called something like 'monkey business' and is a comedy. its was definitely on the bbc iplayer and is not the show IT crowd. please help and thank you in advanced more

Resolved Question: Is it legal for a car insurance company to refuse cash as payment?

I recently bought a vehicle off my uncle and he had Geico insurance on it. Rather then spending time looking for another company I chose to stay with them and simply turn over the policy holder from him to I. I liked the low monthly payment but yesterday I went to the office to pay my insurance payment. Upon getting there I gave the associate 5 $20 bills in payment of $98.16. She gave them back and said we can't take cash due to the fact we are afraid of being robbed. It will have to be money order only. My question is, is this legal? Let me clarify that in the state of Tennessee you are required by law to have at least liability car insurance and if you don't you can be cited by ticket. I was quite upset as I had driven 50 miles to the nearest office to change it over and again yesterday to make payment. Should I have to pay a fee for a money order just for THEIR security purposes to obtain a service which is required by law? I know people debate the term "legal tender" and "public and private debts" but surely this applies to anything which requires money of you. Going to the store and buying a new TV is one thing as you dont have to have it and certainly can refuse to pay it without debt. However if you refuse to pay car insurance the coverage can be dropped and they can bill what you owed as a debt. Is it THEN that the tiny inscription printed on a dollar bill is valid? I know businesses can refuse to accept large amount of money in the form of pennies or say $100 in ones but surely 5 bills at $20 is not what the so called "penny law" had in mind. Is there a way around this or is the legality of it that they have the right to refuse any form of cash? more

Resolved Question: In,Tx would I charge sales tax for a service job like house cleaning?

I also want to add that I might be using my business to clean for business offices as well as residential. I also have a partner, so our business is listed as a partnership if that makes a difference. If I have to charge sales tax for businesses, could I still not charge for residential? If I just had residential would I have to charge sales tax. I've comsidered creating 2 seperate businesses. one for business and one for residential to keep from having to charge residential sales tax but I dont know if it makes any difference. I also emailed my question to the site where they answer tx tax question, but they have been slow in giving me a response. I need to know right away, I need to make money, I already doing advertising and giving quotes on houses. business is picking up fast. I need to make sure I have all my bases covered. more

Resolved Question: How to transfer a land line phone number out of the "area"?

I need major help and suggestions. I am moving from Down town St Louis to the west county which is part of St Louis but has a different area code. I office out of my home and have my home line as a business line, all my clients and all my marketing is done with this phone number listed as my contact numbers. When I contacted the phone company to inform them that I am moving and need my service switched to the new home, they informed me that even though its in St Louis, it is in a differen area code and will not allow me to transfer. Now I HAVE TO keep this number, my business and marketing depends on it. Is there any way I can get around this? Can I set up billing to a PO box in the city? Or does if have to be a real adress? Can I set up a "go phone" and have the numbers switched to that? I do not want to switch my cell phone number to that number, it is equally as bad. There has to be a way around it. Please HELP!!! more

Resolved Question: what career path is best for me?

At 40 I am making a caeer change but it is so hard to decide I have taken numerous career tests and they all come back to what I have done and burned out. my likes are travel, working by myself, My start time my dislikes are manual labor, being tied to the same spot all day everyday I am a restless person, I am likeable person.Office politics get on my nerves and the people are so fake. i can't do it anymore. In the manual labor field, people have no amition and try to one up everybody else and expect you to believe they slept with 10 girls the night before and smoked a pile of weed 3 feet high. You raise your hand to go to the restroom like a child. A buzzer rings when you stop and start work like robots. my history of employment includes- Air traffic controller (US Navy) after i got out I worked foundries and steel mills went to school for drafting all of these I did not like. Went back to school again for Computer science/technician did this for years working my way up the ranks doing field service repair to small to medium sized business networks. I moved on to Network Administrator to director of MIS. Career was going great I was the boss controlled 4 locations then September 11th happened the company I was at went out of business in the wake of this. A felony record of mine from years before for an assault popped only had probation never jail. This conviction never bothered me in the past, I had changed my ways and went to college in the mean time. Searching for employment I was turned down many times with my salary was to high I would never be happy at what they could give me, or the worst one my assault conviction. Seems I am blacklisted from working for anybody. So I decided to go get my CDL until things could change and I could support my family. I wrecked my semi and decided that wasnt the best career goal for me, so I decided to go back to information technology. no one was raising their hand to hire me so I started contracting and after about a year of this I found a good steady contract. I loved it!!! I did Field Service repair in Hospitals. The only downfall it was 24/7 work but I didnt mind I was paid extremely well. I got to travel some to take care of other territories for other workers. I did this job for a few years until the recession hit and my contract was cut. I went back to school again, this time for motorcycle repair. Year long school figured I could do it until the economy picked up. I didnt really like the motorcycle work and decided i would go back to IT again after graduation with an added skill of motorcycle repair so I could work on my own bike and maybe a few others for extra money. The day i graduated I had a heart attack, it was diagnosed as stress related so now I have to find something not hard work low stress and getting to travel some (field service fly somewhere fix a project fly home) preferrably a home office set my own schedule type of work. more

Voting Question: Why can't I find an entry-level job in my field?

I need help. I graduated from college last year, first I completed a Bachelor's Degree in Music Business/Management in 2007, and then I completed a Graduate Certificate in Public Relations/Communications, from which I graduated last year. I'm not sure if its the economy/recession or not, but I can't seem to find a job somewhat related to my field. All of the jobs that ARE in my field require at least 2-3 years of experience in the field. I've done a few internships for free in the past to gain experience, but I can't afford to work for free anymore. I'm currently working 2 part-time jobs in retail, and the only jobs that I seem to get interviews for are customer service and retail jobs. How am I ever supposed to get a job in Marketing/Communications/PR if I can't gain that entry-level experience? I wonder if I should try an employment agency? I'm even open to Administrative Office Work, anything to get my foot in the door. I'm almost 26 years old and I just want a chance to start my career. Help! more
