Red-tape reform a business bonanza
BUSINESSES are expected to save tens of millions of dollars a year under sweeping reforms to business regulation backed by the Council of Australian Governments yesterday.
The changes, described by Kevin Rudd as perhaps the most important since federation, will see laws affecting businesses across a range of areas standardised throughout the country, either through the harmonisation of laws in each state or through the states ceding power to the commonwealth to create a single layer of regulation.
The Prime Minister and state and territory leaders yesterday finalised national consistency on occupational health and safety, trade licensing, business name registration, business reporting requirements, mortgage broking, margin lending and consumer credit.
The commonwealth will also take responsibility for product safety laws and will put in place a new electronic conveyancing system from 2010. more
Why the Olympics are not necessarily good for business
While the Beijing Olympics may be a festival of sport, spectators may not be aware of the challenges that the Games have caused for businesses in China. These include restrictions in getting business visas for a number of big Chinese cities and the recent and summary announcement by Chinese authorities to shut down hundreds of businesses close to Beijing's Olympic site to improve air quality.
The second of these steps has reportedly led to a wave of claims by Western-invested businesses in the region and may result in knock-on worldwide legal actions as businesses are affected by the shutdowns.
These problems reflect the obstacles businesses face when working close to world events, and are only exacerbated by the difficulty in seeking effective and speedy judicial review of official decisions taken in distant jurisdictions with unfamiliar and still-developing legal systems. more
03-06-2008: Pelikan looks at M&A in China, India
Besides China, Pelikan is also looking at possibilities to expand its businesses to several other countries. Pelikan expanded into India, Turkey and France last year.
“India is a huge market. We formed our own Indian subsidiary and do the business ourselves. We are working to partner some major local distributors where they can take our products and distribute for us," Loo said.
The acquisition of Pelikan Hardcopy Holding (PHH) AG and German Hardcopy AG (GHAG) group was completed respectively in February and April 2007.
The finalised acquisition of Pelikan Argentina SA in July 2007 allows the group to expand into the neighbouring country, namely Brazil.
The reunification of Pelikan brand has doubled its turnover in FY07 to RM1.19 billion from RM659.57 million previously, with a net profit increment of 23.59% to RM93.08 million. more
