Strath tourism bucks the trend

Local businesses are much more cautious what the next 12 months has in store for them, however.

A total of 69 operators responded to the on-line tourism business barometer conducted by Aviemore and the Cairngorms Destination Management Ltd looking at the current situation and business confidence in the area's most important industry.

The poll, the only one of its kind in Scotland, saw wide-ranging responses covering the accommodation sector (46 per cent); self-catering operators (15 per cent); activity providers (18 per cent); food, drink, reatil and attractions (14 per cent) and others (seven per cent) from across Badenoch and Strathspey.

It revealed that the levels of turn-over and customers over the last year compared to the previous 12 months is much the same but April to June this year was up in the region of 10 per cent compared to the same period in 2007. more

Zimbabwe: Ministry Decentralises Farmers' Fuel Allocation

Agritex will then submit the information to the National Oil Company of Zimbabwe to enable the farmers to receive their allocation.

In a statement published in the media yesterday, the ministry said farmers' requests should include fuel requirements for harvesting the summer crop currently in the field and the wheat crop that they would be planting.

For the 2008/9-summer season and subsequent agricultural seasons, farmers already on Noczim's database will be required to provide their Agritex officers with full fuel requirements.

The ministry advised farmers not yet on the Noczim database to fill in forms for them to be authenticated by Agritex officers and officers commanding their nearest police station, who will then submit the forms to the ministry for approval.

Once the farmers are placed on Noczim's database, there would not be need for them to go through the ministry for subsequent fuel allocation. more

Businesses fined for not recycling

The Sacramento County Environmental Management District has levied its first two fines against businesses that are not complying with the Regional Waste Authority’s Business Recycling Ordinance.

The fines are less than the maximum $1,000 per day allowed under the ordinance.

The mandate requires businesses in the city of Sacramento and unincorporated Sacramento County that have garbage service for more than 4 cubic yards of waste per week to have a recycling program. It was adopted in April 2007.

The Environmental Management Department expects more enforcement in coming weeks.

UPDATE 1-Akzo buying chemicals businesses in China, Germany

AS: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Friday it is expanding its paper and polymer chemicals businesses by buying specialty chemical producers in Germany and China.

Akzo Nobel, the world's biggest paint company, said its pulp and paper chemicals business, Eka Chemicals, is acquiring Levasil, the silica sol coating business of Germany's H.C. Starck Group.

In a separate deal, Akzo Nobel's polymer chemicals unit has agreed to buy two organic peroxides product lines from Jiangsu QiangSheng of China.

Financial terms of the acquisitions were not disclosed.

Rob Frohn, who is in charge of specialty chemicals at Akzo Nobel, said the deals will "further improve our capability to serve customers in key markets where we already hold strong global positions."
