Review: HP iPAQ9 10 Scores For Business

For the handful of users not interested in the iPhone (whether for business reasons or a vanilla preference for good old Windows Mobile), HP is now shipping the HP iPAQ 910 Business Messenger. This is the smartphone for the serious business user.

The Test Center has looked at other members of the iPAQ family before. The 910 follows the other iPAQs in look and feel -- sleek, high-gloss black, and easy to hold. The fit and finish is of high quality and the 910 doesn't get very hot to touch, a very important criterion for a handheld device.

Measuring 4.5 x 2.5 x 0.6-inches and weighing 5.4 oz, the 910 is average size. Much slimmer than the Palm Treo, slimmer but wider than the new Centro, a little thicker and about an ounce heavier than the BlackBerry Bold, it's slightly thicker than the iPhone 3G. more

Sponsorship for schooling

BIG business is being urged to contribute cash and expertise to Australia's public education system in an American-style corporate philanthropy plan being touted by Education Minister Julia Gillard.

Ms Gillard has returned from a trip to the US convinced that the business sector should play a bigger role in education, including mentoring students and teachers, offering scholarships for students from disadvantaged communities and investing in research.

"One of the things that really made an impact on me was the level of engagement of business in education," Ms Gillard said.

"Corporate America seemed to have a very real sense of the value of education and how important it is to their own success." She said Australia had started down a similar path.

"But there is certainly an opportunity, in my view, for those engaged in corporate Australia to play a role in the education of our young people."

Ms Gillard said local business leaders have raised concerns about the education system. more

I hired a household employee in 2009 and I need to provide the W2. I went ssa website's BSO (business service online) to enter the information and print the W2. However, when I entered the EIN and my name, it says that my employer information is not available. What are my other options to file W2 and provide to the employee? Can I do this at IRS site or do I need some kind of software? What is the deadline? I heard it is Jan 31st but what if I cannot provide by that time? Is there a form to file to extend the due date? more

Resolved Question: Getting paid Cash vs. with Check.. Need advice, Please Help!?

This is quite a story, but please, I need advice. No rude answers please. I work for a friend of the family at a small printing company. I get paid minimum, by the hour - cash, not check. So if it’s under the table, technically “I am not working.” I used to work as a graphic designer and be front desk assistant, now my boss wants to “expand his business” and have me be a sales associate. The job will entitle to go business to business to offer services they provide. I will no longer receive minimum pay and will no longer get paid by the hour; instead I will get paid by commission. Now, up to this point it sounds ok for me because I get to manage my work schedule. A week later he announced to me he will be giving me my own business cards, a new phone (company’s phone), and provide all the necessary equipment for the job. Later, he announced to me that he will need my social security number to have it on file. That’s when the tables turned for me. I am one of the many employees of his company who gets paid in cash. From what I assume, he does not report and or pay payroll taxes. So why would he want and ask for my SSN?? I asked a couple of questions and got the following answer: “You will be working under my name; therefore I need your SSN to make a contract stating everything we will be providing to you, your schedule, etc..” He said that in order for me not to give him my SSN, I would have to have a business license that allows me to sell products to other businesses and will pay me in check so he can deduct taxes. (but why would he offer to pay me by check if he does not pay any other employee by check?) With the contract made and signed, he states that he would continue to pay me cash unless I choose not to give him the information he requested. The contract will not be made by him, but by his lawyer. This is all a big issue. I would like to have some sort of income coming in, and it seems like this would be an ideal opportunity without all of the complications. What steps should I follow? Who can I speak to about this? I was thinking discussing this deal with a lawyer as well.. but I have not made that step. I do not know what he might be capable of if I do give him this info. A friend said that I might end up filling out a 1099 G form for taxes which means I would have to pay a certain percentage off the amount I earned for that year. What’s your opinion? In need of help asap more

Resolved Question: Please help Economics gurus! I need clarification of the definition of intermediate vs final goods?

Are products or services sold by one company or enterprise within an economy always intermediate, or only if the purchasing company then reprocesses and sells the same product again? I thought I understood the concept of intermediate demand, but now realise I'm wrong... Here's an example to explain where I got confused: Say I own a small company manufacturing paper. I sell 20% of my production direct to the public - so those sales would form part of my local economy's final demand for paper I sell another 30% of my production to a small publishing and printing company, which uses it to print books, fliers etc which they then sell. - that is clearly an intermediate sale I sell the remaining 50% of my output to a variety of other local businesses. None of these businesses produce any goods for sale which include paper, but they use my paper for the internal operations of their businesses, and for invoices etc. Does this 50% of my output represent final or intermediate demand for paper? I hope someone can help - I'm really confused.... Thanks in advance more

Resolved Question: I need help with my business coursework on my marketing campaign?

i have created an arcade business in alexandra palace and im a small business at the moment. it says i have to do these things Discuss the main ways in which a business can promote and advertise its products and services. Also discuss how legal constraints can affect how it does this. Use examples to illustrate your discussion. Select the sales and advertising promotion methods which you feel are most appropriate for your business. Explain how you plan to use them and why they are the most appropriate for your business. You can also use the findings from your target market and competitor research to justify your choice of promotions. Draft a couple of examples of the promotional materials you will use. For example, design a poster, newspaper advert or a business card promoting your business. Research the possible costs of promoting your business. For example, how much will it cost to place an advert on the side of a local bus, produce 5000 flyers, 200 business cards, or a radio advert? You should include some proof that you have carried out this research eg a table of costs or promotional information from a leaflet printing business. You can use www.trade-print.com to find information on the cost of printing leaflets. Create a budget table showing the cost of each of the individual forms promotion that you have chosen to use and the total cost of your marketing campaign. Evaluate the possible effects that the cost of your marketing campaign and its success would have upon the finances of your business. more

Resolved Question: Travelling to the US from the UK with a caution?

Hi Guys My first post on here, surely won't be my last! I am going to get straight to the point, I am planning a visit to the States in March whilst my girlfriend is on spring break. Now I understand that US immigration require anyone who has had *any* dealings with the police not to apply via the VWP, but by Visa instead. Let me fill you in. Almost 3 years ago (Jan, 2007) I was arrested and cautioned with theft from employer. A big naughty and only my first offence! At the time I was in a bad situation and had nobody to turn to, literally no one. My intention was to pay the money right back once my financial situation stabilised. Unfortunately I was caught before this could happen. I was duely dismissed and received a call from the police station asking me to make an appearance a few days later. I complied and attended said appointment. Was arrested once I passed through the foyer (without being cuffed), went through all the usual red tape in custody (prints, drug test, photos) and was then interviewed. During the interview I put my case forward and took whole acceptance of the situation, after a short wait they came back to inform me of the CPS' verdict. They issued me with a 'conditional caution', that said all monies were to be paid back and an apology letter was written by me to both the owners of the business and my fellow employees explaining my actions and apologising profusely for them. Otherwise face further prosecution. Both conditions I fufilled within the given time frame. My last dealings with them were in March of the same year, to reduce the 'conditional caution' down to a 'caution' at my last visit to the station. Lest to say I promised myself that'd be my only and last dealings with the police in that situation. Thankfully I can say this experience I have learned from and turned my life around in the time since. Now my predicament comes in the form of US immigration. Since booking my ticket I have completed the ETSA? travel document and received authorisation to travel under the VWP to the US for 2 years. Do they actually check peoples names and records when you fill out this application? Or is it a case of they accept you and then when you enter the US get pulled up for lieing on the original document. So do I chance it and answer 'No' on the I-94w form and try my luck at customs? Or do I apply through the correct routes and obtain a Visa. A good friend of mine who is a Constable imparted me with advice from his Sergeant that they *do not* have access to this kind of information, so theoretically should not be pulled up about it since it never resulted in a prosecution or gaol time. The only records available to them would be thier own, Interpols and i'd assume high profile criminals in the U.K that our own intelligence & immigration services are aware of. Can anyone verify that this may be the case? Another friend with about 3 cautions for various offences (including theft of a boat) recommended that I apply through the Visa route, he did and was accepted with no issues. What I am looking for is some solid advice on which to take action on. I have heard and seen so many conflicting stories that I really don't know what to do now! :-s I won't beat around the bush, the most hassle free approach would be the one i'm more inclined to take, although understand the severity of the situation that cutting corners may include, so would just like an impartial, informed and ultimately (first hand) experienced point of view. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Any comments / help much appriciated. Feel free to reply or mail me direct! Ta! more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my letter to President Obama?

Dear President Obama: I'm planning to move my family and extended family into Mexico for my health, and I would like to ask you to assist me. We're planning to simply walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico , and we'll need your help to make a few arrangements. We plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Calderon, that I'm on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following: 1. Free medical care for my entire family. 2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not. 3. Please print all Mexican government forms in English. 4. I want my grandkids to be taught Spanish by English-speaking (bi-lingual) teachers. 5. Tell their schools they need to include classes on American culture and history. 6. I want my grandkids to see the American flag on one of the flag poles at their school. 7. Please plan to feed my grandkids at school for both breakfast and lunch. 8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to government services. 9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico , but, I don't plan to purchase car insurance, and I probably won't make any special effort to learn local traffic laws. 10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has at least one English-speaking officer 11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put US. flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals. 12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start. 13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely nice and never say a critical things about me or my family, or about the strain we might place on their economy. 14. I want to receive free food stamps. 15. Naturally, I'll expect free rent subsidies. 16. I'll need Income tax credits so although I don't pay Mexican Taxes, I'll receive money from the government. 17. Please arrange it so that the Mexican Gov't pays $ 4,500 to help me buy a new car. 18. Oh yes, I almost forgot, please enroll me free into the Mexican Social Security program so that I'll get a monthly income in retirement. I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all his people who come to the U.S. from Mexico . I am sure that President Calderon won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely. Thank you so much for your kind help. You the man!!! Joe American Cincinnati, OH more

Resolved Question: H.R. 3962, the "Affordable Health Care for America Act?

http://www.atr.org/ So what say you! Like this deficit neutral bill? It will cost the people not the budget like Medicare etc... BREAKING: Comprehensive List of Taxes In House Democrat Health Bill From Ryan Ellis on Thursday, October 29, 2009 12:20 PM Add to Twitter H.R. 3962, the "Affordable Health Care for America Act" has been introduced--all 1990 pages of it. This gargantuan beast contains thirteen new tax hikes. Here they all are, with description and page number (PDF version): *** Employer Mandate Excise Tax (Page 275): If an employer does not pay 72.5 percent of a single employee’s health premium (65 percent of a family employee), the employer must pay an excise tax equal to 8 percent of average wages. Small employers (measured by payroll size) have smaller payroll tax rates of 0 percent (<$500,000), 2 percent ($500,000-$585,000), 4 percent ($585,000-$670,000), and 6 percent ($670,000-$750,000). Individual Mandate Surtax (Page 296): If an individual fails to obtain qualifying coverage, he must pay an income surtax equal to the lesser of 2.5 percent of modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) or the average premium. MAGI adds back in the foreign earned income exclusion and municipal bond interest. Medicine Cabinet Tax (Page 324): Non-prescription medications would no longer be able to be purchased from health savings accounts (HSAs), flexible spending accounts (FSAs), or health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs). Insulin excepted. Cap on FSAs (Page 325): FSAs would face an annual cap of $2500 (currently uncapped). Increased Additional Tax on Non-Qualified HSA Distributions (Page 326): Non-qualified distributions from HSAs would face an additional tax of 20 percent (current law is 10 percent). This disadvantages HSAs relative to other tax-free accounts (e.g. IRAs, 401(k)s, 529 plans, etc.) Denial of Tax Deduction for Employer Health Plans Coordinating with Medicare Part D (Page 327): This would further erode private sector participation in delivery of Medicare services. Surtax on Individuals and Small Businesses (Page 336): Imposes an income surtax of 5.4 percent on MAGI over $500,000 ($1 million married filing jointly). MAGI adds back in the itemized deduction for margin loan interest. This would raise the top marginal tax rate in 2011 from 39.6 percent under current law to 45 percent—a new effective top rate. Excise Tax on Medical Devices (Page 339): Imposes a new excise tax on medical device manufacturers equal to 2.5 percent of the wholesale price. It excludes retail sales and unspecified medical devices sold to the general public. Corporate 1099-MISC Information Reporting (Page 344): Requires that 1099-MISC forms be issued to corporations as well as persons for trade or business payments. Current law limits to just persons for small business compliance complexity reasons. Also expands reporting to exchanges of property. Delay in Worldwide Allocation of Interest (Page 345): Delays for nine years the worldwide allocation of interest, a corporate tax relief provision from the American Jobs Creation Act Limitation on Tax Treaty Benefits for Certain Payments (Page 346): Increases taxes on U.S. employers with overseas operations looking to avoid double taxation of earnings. Codification of the “Economic Substance Doctrine” (Page 349): Empowers the IRS to disallow a perfectly legal tax deduction or other tax relief merely because the IRS deems that the motive of the taxpayer was not primarily business-related. Application of “More Likely Than Not” Rule (Page 357): Publicly-traded partnerships and corporations with annual gross receipts in excess of $100 million have raised standards on penalties. If there is a tax underpayment by these taxpayers, they must be able to prove that the estimated tax paid would have more likely than not been sufficient to cover final tax liability. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not. 3. Please print all Mexican government forms in English. 4. I want my grand kids to be taught Spanish by English-speaking (bi-lingual) teachers. 5. Tell their schools they need to include classes on American culture and history. 6. I want my grand kids to see the American flag on one of the flag poles at their school. 7. Please plan to feed my grand kids at school for both breakfast and lunch. 8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to government services. 9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico , but, I don't plan to purchase car insurance, and I probably won't make any special effort to learn local traffic laws. 10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has at least one English-speaking officer. 11. I plan to fly the U.S. Flag from my house top, put U S. You're the man!!! more

Resolved Question: Apple Care Service I am done with iPod, iPhoe, iCrap, APPLE junk forever.?

June 11, 2009 Apple Care Service I’m very dissatisfied with the diagnostic evaluation that was performed on my iPod. There is no evidence of any external force, physical damage, of even a scratch. While listening to music the screen went white and then stopped. I find it easy for your company to simply pass this off as a damaged product to save money but let me make it clear I WILL NEVER AND ALL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANY OF YOUR PRODUCTS IF THIS IS NOT FIXED. I will give you one more chance to abide to the warranty that you so claim to guarantee. For the price of $150, and only one year warranty, I would expect your product to last longer than five months. Inside the return box that you sent back to my house was my original iPod and a copy of a mass printed APPLE CARE SERVICE FORM. The iPod was left to flop around inside the box unsecured with no support foam. Is this how all iPods are shipped??? The mass printed APPLE CARE SERVICE FORM looks to be a standard practice that your company just shipped back the customer. I think that my iPod was never inspected or troubelshooted to determine the problem. It probably never made it to a technician. In fact, I think someone is in place to receive, open the box, shove in a mass printed APPLE CARE SERVICE FORM, and send it back to the customer. Maybe he will pay more money to repair the problem. I will send this to all my E-mail accounts and to the consumer report business. Part # MB735LL/A Serial # YMB38B3A3QT 13 July 09 Called tech support spoke with TODD he stated that the plastic pin for the charger located at the bottom of the iPod was damaged. I looked at the pin and noticed that a small corner was in fact chipped away. This was done from plugging in the charger. So for that I was told the warranty will not cover this defect. Now for the price of 139.00 plus shipping and handling they would replace the iPod. I have to say that this is the biggest screw job, piece of crap and believe me I am done with iPod, iPhoe, iCrap, APPLE junk forever. JC (one pissed off) customer more

Resolved Question: Copyright issue for pictures taken at studio?

Last night,we ordered our daughter's photo to be printed. It was 9:32pm when somebody called us from the printing company stating that they can't print it because they need a release copy from a studio. We had paid more than a hundred bucks for that picture. We had a receipt and even the cd of that picture. And one more thing, that's not even a studio! It was just a booth in Tanforan! Before the cd and the picture were released to us,the lady from the photography even told us that we can reprint the picture anytime and anywhere we want that's why they gave us a copy of it because that will be deleted in their system after 2 days of purchase! My husband even researched the copyright law and he read that if you paid somebody to take your pictures, then the pictures are yours unless stipulated in your agreement/contract. That statement itself is saying that we have ALL the right to reprint OUR OWN picture! And besides, it is OUR picture,we paid the photographer to take OUR picture! Why would the management and the staff REFUSE to print it when in fact me and the third party had agreed that it is OK to recopy it. Why is that company going after their customers like they are the lawyers of all the photographers in the country. We even called them at 9:50 pm to reconfirm everything! As what their terms and conditions states,"We are solely responsible for any copyright violations we may incur as a result of our activities on the Service." We took the whole responsibility for it!We won't be making a business out of it!And as far as I know, you will still print the photo but there is a discretion form where customers will sign. But on our conversation last night (11:32pm),they didn't even offer that to us.They just argued and didn't even make an effort to resolve it. They were really making everything hard for us and at times were rude. What kind of management is that?We feel very offended here. Do we have the right to file a complaint in the FTC? more

Resolved Question: Is this a good argumentative speech?

I wrote this in about 7 hours and I need to know if this is a good speech or if there is anything I should change or fix. The Subject is Censorship, and I am arguing against censorship. So Please give me your honest opinion. (Sorry for my messy grammer/spelling it's 2:39.) Censorship effects us all, be it through race, religion, government party or income. Everyone in this room will be effected by censorship one way or another. There are so many types of censorship: Moral, Military, Religious, Political, Corporate and Creative just to name a few. Corporate Censorship is when media outlets intervene to stop the publishing of information that may depict their business or business associates in an adverse light. Privately owned corporations that report news also can refuse to share information that may cause loss of advertiser revenue or shareholder value which negative publicity may bring. The Telecommunications Act is a law that Canadian telecommunications common carriers like Telus, Bell Canada and Verizon are regulated. The Telecommunications act at the time was not favored by the media. Records show that there were only 12 major news stories about the Telecommunications act and a total of 19.5 minutes of air time accumulated over those stories. Much of the coverage of the new act was centered around the television content ratings and the V-chip while the considerable changes to the ownership rules of the media were almost completely ignored. Only bits and pieces of the opinions that the Critics of the legislations had were shown on air, because the legislations directly profited the media. Newspapers can actually refuse to run commentary they don’t agree with as well. Black Press owns over 95 newspapers in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and other places outside of Canada. If the owner of these newspapers disagreed with new laws that were passed that could change lives, they could not print it. That is complete corporate censorship. Religious Censorship has been an issue that has been occurring as far back as you can flip any text book. Far back in ancient times Sorcery books worth 50,000 silver were burnt by Paul’s converts at Ephesus. They have tried to completely eliminate an entire religion all together with the Holocaust! The Da Vinci Code was attacked by various religious groups, saying that Dan Brown was a Satanist and was going to hell. The movie was even banned in Samoa. Everyone knows who Harry Potter is, the FICTIONAL orphan boy that learns he is a wizard and goes to a school for wizards. Religious groups want to ban these books from being sold, and these movies from being seen. Some Catholic followers believe that Harry Potter glamorizes Wicca, a religion involving the thought that magic can be created by “Manipulating through the form of Witchcraft or Sorcery”, but at no time is the religion advertised during the books nor movies. If this is not evidence that censorship is occurring more than anyone would have thought, take a look at China. Though blocks to certain websites may not apply to different cities, and they have been lifted for certain occasions, they are still BLOCKING websites. Their most recent major website was access to The New York Times which was blocked on December 20, 2008. Most foreign websites are still available for mainland China, but a few websites such as the Chinese-language service of BBC continue to be blocked and unblocked. Regardless of the small number of blocked sites, the mere fact that the government is starting to block off sites that have no reason to disappear is enough to raise suspicion. The Golden Shield project ( Also referred too as The Great Firewall Of China ) was created and is owned by the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China. It was created in 1998 and was actually used In the beginning of 2003. The Golden Shield Project’s job is to block Content on the internet. It does this by stopping IP addresses from being routed through and is made up of standard firewalls and proxy servers at the Internet gateways. The system also selectively engages in DNS poisoning when particular sites are requested. The government does not appear to be methodically examining Internet content, because it is technically impractical. The Censored Content includes but is not limited too: *Websites that are about or are related to the Falun Gong spiritual practice, which is not only internet censorship but religious as well. *News Sources that cover topics such as: Police Brutality, Freedom of Speech or Democracy *The Chinese Wikipedia which has been recently unblocked *Any major Newspaper and television media that contain information on the Taiwanese Independence. *Sites that are linked with the Dalai Lama and his involvement with the International Tibet Independence Movement If you think that China’s internet problems could never get to Canada, Think again. Resolved Question: Misleading order form turned into 3 year contract?

Someone from our marketing department at the company I work for signed an order that stated it was for a free ad in an trade show exhibitors guide. The fine print at the bottom actually says that we have to pay $1500 a year for three years and is irrevocable. The company is in Mexico and states "applicable law is exclusively mexican. Company reserves the right to initiate legal proceedings at the contractor's place of business." This is obviously misleading as we did not want to purchase any services. On the top of the form it is stated this is for a free ad. While it is misleading, is it illegal? Will we be required to pay? It is misleading. When the top of the page tells you it's a free ad and then the bottom tells you you have to pay for it, what exactly would you call that? While the marketing person SHOULD (and I guarantee will now) always read the fine print, it is still misleading. I researched this company online and found that this has been happening to a lot of trade show exhibitors. more

Resolved Question: CAN SOMEONE PROOFREAD THIS!? It's a position essay. If i should add somethin to make it sound more position?

Traveling down a busy highway, a number of well constructed billboards linger near every overpass and exit. Listening to the radio, a song is bluntly disrupted by an irrelevant announcement. Watching television, a popular show is left on a cliff hanger until the 7 minute commercial break is over. Surfing the internet, a banner crosses the monitor disrupting a video or game. There are a number of ways in which advertising may try to persuade the public to buy their products. Advertisers are reaching consumers through everyday conveniences. Most would say advertisement is a way to promote information about services and products, but in most cases, it involves deception and manipulation. It may even trigger severe aggravation and irritation. Advertisers are using the manipulative approach instead of the clear, basic informative approach. Good advertising needs to convey the basic information about the product or service, but often, it takes advantage of the consumer by not including, or disguising some piece of relevant information that might make the consumer think twice about the product. An Advertiser’s objective is to try to make the consumer take the first step towards a specific company. This might make the consumer call an 800 number, go to a showroom, or be convinced that one product is better than another, by using any number of manipulating strategies and tactics. As consumers, people should beware of the media blitz of the advertising warlords. By watching almost any TV commercial, some might notice some fine print at the bottom of the screen. If read quick enough, the print explains that basically what is being advertised is not what the consumer is receiving. It might cost more, be a different color, different size, or not even be available at all. Media (TV, Radio, Internet. Etc.) is found to be the most effective approach for advertisers to reach the consumers. Companies pay anywhere from $10,000 to over $50,000 for actors or celebrities to expose their products in music, movies, television and their everyday lives. This kind of exposure is called product placement. This form of advertising originated in the late 1800’s during a film called Défilé du 8e Battalion. It featured a wheelbarrow with a sunlight soap logo on the side of it. Thus, the business of product placement had begun. Product placement is effective because consumes are more likely to be engaged during a show or movie than during the commercial breaks. The opposite of product placement is said to be called “reverse product placement.” "Reverse product placement" takes "faux product placement" a step further, by making products in real life to match those seen in a movie or TV show. For example, in 2007, 7-Eleven remodeled eleven of its American stores as "Kwik-E-Marts", selling some real-life versions of products seen in episodes of the Simpsons such as Buzz Cola, Duff Beer and Krusty-O's cereal. Although most advertising is manipulative, people rely on it to expose them to new products and services being offered. Informative advertisements provide clear facts and data. A commercial for a dishwashing soap shows how effective one brand works compared to another brand. That’s important for a consumer to see when deciding which brand to purchase. Informative advertising is almost the complete opposite of manipulative advertising. They are relevant to consumers’ interests, they try not to interrupt, and they are informative with clear facts and data. Although informative advertising seems useful, Advertisers often take the manipulative approach to promote their informative product or service. Informative advertisements aren’t well known and tend to be ignored. Advertisements are ruining our society. According to Capital City Weekly, the average household receives over thirty four pounds of advertisements by mail each year. That’s a total of 4.5 million tons of advertisements mailed each year. Unfortunately, studies find that children are the biggest target of all advertising. Kids represent an important part of population to marketers because they have their own purchasing power. They influence their parents' buying decisions and they're the adult consumers of the future. A recent study conducted by the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth found that the top 15 programs in 2003 had alcohol in their ads. That is a wrong example to be setting for our next generation of voters, politicians, doctors, and the future generation of America. Subliminal messaging and hidden product placement among others, are abusing the informative format of advertising. Advertising that could improve our society is not exposed enough. Issues like gun control and drunk driving are significant and superior to issues like toys being sold at McDonalds and what shows to watch on primetime TV. Advertisements need to be limited. They are hurting the future generation, spending America's money, and overwhelming our free country. Nobody but the publ more

Resolved Question: Homeless In Portland?

For reasons beyond my control, in less than three days time, I am about to find myself in Portland without a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out. We have a little money saved up, my husband and I, but not enough to afford housing. Just enough to cover food and transportation for about a month. This was very sudden for us all! The steps I have taken are: 1) I've called different shelters and I am on a couple of waiting lists. If it were just me, I would camp out at a park or something equally adventurous. But, we have a three year old with us that wouldn't do so well in Portland’s cold, so that is obviously out. I did look into cheap apartments and people needing roommates, in addition to extended stay hotels through Craig’s List and the Portland online newspaper. But without more money to start up with, I have just found it to be out of our income range at present moment. 2) I’ve also downloaded Health and Human Services forms for assistance with health care, food, and daycare needs. When I arrive, the first stop I plan on making is Portland’s downtown office to drop everything off and check out my options. I‘ve even located all necessary documentation into a very handy, extremely organized folder to make the interview process go as smoothly as possible. I’ve tried very hard to dot all of my i’s and cross all my t’s before we leave. (I am calling WIC tomorrow to set up an appoitment) 3) Still, I wasn’t able to give my job enough notice to transfer properly, so I am leaving without a job (although we‘re still on good terms). And my husbands job doesn’t even transfer at all (no matter how much they adore the man!). So, we have uploaded our resumes to Yahoo! Jobs, Monster.Com, and I’ve posted a couple of classifieds on MySpace. I’ve also been calling around to local businesses to see who is hiring and who is not. So, we are both looking for jobs right now. Okay, so my question is this. Does anyone have any legitimate, factual information about options open to a family in my situation or things we can do now to possibly make this huge transition more productive? I stress the hard-facts-end of things, because I really don't need to have someone lecture me on why going is a bad idea or how stupid I am for making this kind of move. I appreciate your opinions, but right now I really need something a little more concrete... What I am hoping to find out is perhaps a step I’ve missed or an avenue of action that I haven’t even considered. If anyone knows anything pertinent about Portland that they might want to pass on, I would appreciate that as well. I’ve printed every map and gotten every number to the Public Transportation that I can get my hands on, but there’s much more that needs to be done! more

Resolved Question: could you help me to make a short summary of the following text?

The most prosperous modern states have a multitude of functions that go far beyond the core functions of national defense and the maintenance of law and order discussed above. However even these minimum function require resources. In a market economy that means the state needs a money income to hire people and buy supplies. The state has two potential sources of income: a) selling goods and services in the manner of a business concern and b) direct levies and requisitioning of money, goods and labour from the population it controls. If the state has a minimal role control of the currency is only service it provides other than law and order. The income from the issue notes and coins this is known as ‘seniorage’. It is possible to simply print money or, in the case of specie, to debase the coinage by lowering purity of the metal. However if this is done on any scale it can only be a short term expedient, as continual increases in the supply of notes and coins will cause inflation and ultimately undermine trust in the currency. Arbitrary requisitioning of goods and labour, like debasement of the currency, is another short term expedient that produces popular opposition. The press gang (squads that kidnapping men off the street) for service in the navy, a practice common up in wartime up until the end of the Napoleonic War was particularly resented. Taxes are considered preferable as the former are predicable and people can budget for them. Adam Smith laid down following maxims for of taxation:the burden on individuals should be linked to their ability to pay; time due, manner of payment and quantity should be certain; the form of payment should be convenient for the tax payer in both time and manner and finaly the tax should be cheap to administer. Taxes can be levied on income, wealth or consumption. Taxes on income and wealth are direct: they unavoidable (at least by legal means) These can be fixed – poll tax – or progressive - income tax. Taxes on consumption are indirect: they can be (legally) avoided by not spending money. These can be general: value added tax (VAT), excise tax, receipts tax, purchase tax or on specific items: salt tax, road tax (on road vehicles), window tax, excise duty on tobacco, beer wines and spirits. more

I have just started my babysitting business, Leap Frog Babysitting Service! I have me and my friend in it. I have made flyers to give out, I have printed and copied forms and info cards. I'm all ready, armed with coloring pages and a love for children. I am 13 and have gone to the Red Cross for the Babysitting class and am saving up money for First Aid and CPR classes. But I am just starting out with little expirence (other than watching my parent's friend's 2 year old daugther for a few hours for free) and need tips. ~What games should I play with kids ~What do I charge per hour (none of that child per hour stuff) ~How do I get parents interested in me? Resolved Question: Are electronic signatures legal? (see details)?

Here's my situation. I work for a company that does document imaging-that is, we scan paperwork and help companies go paperless. My boss has suggested that the next natural step for us would be to help our current clients STAY paperless. In order to do this, we would need to start moving into the area of electronic signatures, like at doctors and dentists offices, where a patient can simply fill out a form electronically and then type out their electronic signature instead of having to print out a piece of paper and sign it, which would then create more paper, going against our goal! My question is this: In order to move our business into this realm, is there anything we would need to know from a legal standpoint? We obviously wouldn't want someone who went to a doctor we worked with and had a bad experience to take that person to court and claim that they never signed any paperwork, even if they used an electronic signature. Is there any sort of statute that says electronic signatures are a legal proof of signature? What would I need to know so we can comfortably offer this service? more

Voting Question: Do-it-yourself website design advice?

I have no experience with website design, but I am fairly intelligent and not too scared of the computer; so I think I can build one myself if I find the right user-friendly interface. Can you recommend a reputable website where I can easily incorporate the following? 1. Domain name registration and multiple e-mail addresses 2. Basic website with links to various pages of information 3. The ability to create a form/registration that can be either completed and submitted online, or printed, completed, and submitted via fax or U.S. Mail 4. The ability to make purchases online using Paypal. 5. Very low monthly fees. This business involves offering classes to home school students, and part of the mission is keeping prices low. Although I do plan to make a profit, it won't be enormous; so $40/month is not a good price for me. It seems that with most services, once you add forms to complete online and online payments, the prices go way up. Anyone know of a good alternative? more

Resolved Question: Is there any truth in this letter to the editor about illegals and E-Verify?

http://www.heraldextra.com/content/view/260751/58/ Can E-Verify help stem tide of illegal immigration? Print E-mail Daily Herald No! Database will be a regulatory nightmare Jim Harper With the failure of Congress to reform immigration laws, political leaders are searching for election-year achievements in this area. But the emerging consensus in favor of "electronic employment eligibility verification" will collapse when Americans learn the details of the technical and regulatory contraption being proposed. The New Employee Verification Act recently joined the "SAVE Act" and a dozen other bills in the House of Representatives that would require employers to submit every new employee to a federal government database system for a background check. The Immigration Reform and Control Act began all this in 1986. It conscripted U.S. employers into immigration law enforcement by requiring them to collect I-9 forms from new hires. Ten years later, the "Basic Pilot" program began. Renamed "E-Verify" last year, its 52,000 participants--less than 1 percent of all employers--submit worker information to a government Web site for comparison against Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security databases. When E-Verify cannot confirm a worker's eligibility, it issues the employer a "tentative nonconfirmation." If nonconfirmed workers do not present themselves at federal government offices within eight days for review of their papers, the government issues a "final nonconfirmation," barring them from working at their new jobs. If E-Verify goes national, get used to hearing that Orwellian term: "nonconfirmation." In December 2006, the SSA's Office of the Inspector General estimated that the agency's "Numident" file -- the data against which Basic Pilot checks worker information -- has an error rate of 4.1 percent. With 55 million new hires each year, that is about 11,000 tentative nonconfirmations per workday in the U.S. Illegal immigrants would respond dynamically, not passively. More would collude with employers to work under the table, avoiding E-Verify, other regulations and taxes all at the same time. Others would deepen the minor identity frauds they commit today. E-Verify can pick up multiple uses of given identities and "nonconfirm" those identities. This would make it more difficult for illegal immigrants to work, of course, but it would have the same effect on American citizens. Victims of identity fraud today encounter financial difficulties; under national E-Verify, they would be unemployable. Even if a national employment eligibility verification system were workable, it is not a system we should want. Once built, this government monitoring system would soon be extended to housing, financial services, and other essentials to try to get at illegal immigrants. It would also be converted to policy goals well beyond immigration control. Direct regulatory power over American citizens would flow to the federal government. Even more information about Americans' lives would flow into federal government databases. And sensitive personal data would be exposed to more security threats. Electronic employment eligibility verification would immerse America's workers and businesses in Kafkaesque bureaucracy and erode the freedoms of the American citizen, even as it failed to stem illegal immigration. Ultimately, there is no alternative but for Congress to repair the broken immigration system by aligning legal immigration with our nation's economic demand for labor. • Jim Harper is director of information policy studies at the Cato Institute in Washington. more

Resolved Question: Best tagline for a newly formed home based sole proprietor word processing business in the Caribbean.?

As a newly formed home based word processing service using Microsoft Office I need to develop a simple tagline that I can attach to my logo on any printed material that I may produce, i.e. letterheads, brochures, website, business cards etc. The tagline should not be more than 7 words and needs to be something that hopefully will be memorable to whoever sees it, you know, like Coke Cola's "Its the real thing" or yellow pages "let your fingers do the walking". Any ideas would be great. The business is in one of the small Caribbean islands. more

Resolved Question: Scammed by Verizon Yellow Pages.. help?

We opened up a small business in Sept 06. 2 months prior to the opening my wife was approached by 2 Verizon Yellow Pages salesmen and tried to sell us yellow pages advertisement. She informed them that she had no authority to make such decisions but would be more than happy to take any information back to those who had authority. The salesmen said that would be fine but told her that in order to make a proper estimate they would need her to sign workorder form to authorize the quote which she did. We never heard from them until a bill for $1500 came . We were shocked and checked the yellow pages and saw that they had printed an add for us. The only phone number they had was my wife's cell phone so they published that(the business had no phone yet). We tried to call the sales office but no one returned our calls untill we threatened to sue. They then hid behind customer service and said there was nothing they could do and now are threatening to sue us. What are my chances? more

Sandra Miller of Altoona is the mother of Stephen Heiss, who died Aug. 28, 2005. Miguel Padilla was convicted and received death sentences this month for killing Alfred Mignogna, owner of the United Veterans Association building; Fredrick Rickabaugh Sr., UVA doorman; and Heiss, a patron. The jury wasn’t told that Padilla is an illegal alien. The civil lawsuit notice, filed by attorney Art Cohen of Hollidaysburg, blames the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for allowing Padilla to remain in the United States. Padilla, 27, came to America as a young boy with his mother and brothers to escape an alcoholic father. He graduated from Penn Cambria High School but never became a U.S. citizen. He was involved in a stabbing incident in which the victim was his then-father-in-law. ICE never took Padilla into custody or attempted to deport him. U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, R-9th District, spoke of the case on the House floor, saying ICE did nothing about Padilla. Most of the money sought is for punitive damages because the government did not take any action that could have prevented the homicides. An attorney with ICE declined comment Wednesday. ICE has asked Cohen to provide it with more details concerning the Padilla case. more

Resolved Question: Verizon Wireless rebate scam????

Bought a VX8300 from Verizon, which after $50 rebate will be free. They gave me a photocopy of the rebate for with the entire top portion cut off, making it worthless. Tried to print form from Web site, that's was no possible. Called customer service, they said they would mail the forms, expect them in 10-15 business days. Verizon only gives a window of 15 days to send the rebate, so that wouldn't work. I called the store, they didn't care they had given me a bad form. Went to the store to get a new form, they then gave me a new form--the wrong one!!! I had to fight with them to give me the right form, which they finally did. I have sent everything in, but my UPC from the box was smudged (not by me) and the ECN was unreadable. The form says the ECN must be included, I assume this means it must be readable. Anyway, I will now wait to see if I get a check, but I doubt it. This whole thing has seemed like a big scam from the start.I bought it from an official Verizon store, they gave me a bad rebate form. When I spoke to them they said no problem, they would credit my account $50 if I came down (I tape recorded that conversation). When I came to the store 30 minutes later they said no credit, I had to wait until I got my rejection letter and then they would consider it. So why was I told to come to the store!!!!???? I asked to speak with the person who I talked to on the phone, Jose. The customer service girl was gone for 10 minutes then came back, typed something into her computer and said I would have a $50 credit on my next bill. I think Jose knew I recorded our conversation. Now I'll have to wait and see if I really get a credit. (I did a search for Verizon Rebate Scam on Google and it came back with like 350,000 results; if you do a Wikipedia search on Rebate, Verizon Wireless comes back as one of the companies with the most complaints.) more

Resolved Question: Fewer monthly bills - higher taxes.?

Is it time to make a change in our system of doing some kinds of business? Each month, every home owner and ever apartment dweller receives a bill for his use of electricity and water and for the cost of some type of heating fuel, ( natural gas, oil, coal, butane or any other form of heating fuel.) This amounts to a tremendous effort in accounting, metering, paper handling and printing, mailing, postage and so forth... it also often results in what I believe is the very pointless necessity on the part of our utility companies to shut off services for those people who are late payers or deadbeats. The bottom line is that our current system produces a great deal of possibly wasted effort and dollars. Suppose we made a change and demanded "FREE" utilities for individuals -- shifting the cost to taxes or onto the shoulders of business? Taxes would go up certainly & business would simply raise the price of their goods but wouldn't we little people gain something in the long run? more
