Ahead of the Bell: CIT Group

CIT Group shares rose in premarket trading, but an Oppenheimer analyst says the lender waited too long to consider new business strategies, and will be forced into a fire sale.

CIT tapped into its credit lines Friday, and said it plans to sell parts of its business and billions of dollars in loans to raise money. Shares rose 37 cents, or 3.8 percent, to $10 in premarket electronic trading Monday.

But analyst Meredith Whitney said the company moved too late. She downgraded the stock to "Perform" from "Outperform," and wrote that she hoped the "chronically mismanaged" company would be forced to sell itself earlier, when the stock was worth about $27 per share -- a move she said would have been beneficial to shareholders.

Shares of New York-based CIT Group Inc. finished at $9.63 on Thursday, the most recent day of trading. more

S&P downgrades National City: The credit rating service Standard & Poor's lowered its outlook for National City Corp. to negative from stable because of continued deterioration in housing markets. "The outlook revision reflects our concern regarding National City's exposure to the still-challenged housing and mortgage markets," S&P said.

It cited near-term risks from National City's activities in commercial and residential construction, high-risk home-equity loans, as well as loans retained from the 2006 sale of subprime mortgage lender First Franklin.

The downgrade ended a rough week for National City, which saw its stock lose 43 percent of its value early in the week before bouncing back slightly to end trading Thursday at $11 a share.

Dots to expand in new HQ location: Dots, a national seller of women's clothing, plans to leave its longtime headquarters in Solon and move its 200 office and distribution workers to a new, larger building a few miles away in Glenwillow's Emerald Valley Business Park. more

Old Town changes in final stretch

TEMECULA ---- Even after an extensive effort to determine how development will take place in Old Town, some property owners still have beefs with proposed code changes ---- mainly that there's no requirement for most new businesses to add parking spots.The Planning Commission voted unanimously Wednesday to recommend that the City Council pursue an amendment to the Old Town specific plan that will allow taller buildings and establish design standards to guide the overall development of the historical area.The council will consider the policy change to the historical district's development code at Tuesday's 7 p.m. meeting at City Hall, 43200 Business Park Drive.Of the 10 recommendations to be considered, there are no changes suggested on parking. Currently, a new building does not have to provide dedicated parking spaces for its tenants.While the city has touted the construction next year of a 480-space parking garage on Mercedes and Second streets as a way to provide future parking for the Old Town district, some argue that more creative ideas are needed.In 1999, the city eliminated parking requirements in Old Town in an effort to spur construction in the once-sleepy district. more

Scoring NFL Business

The 2001 Super Bowl did something for Chris Murnaghan's gift shop that years of hard work had not.

It gave her national exposure and a healthy jolt of cash in a few short weeks.

The National Football League allowed Murnaghan to make and sell a decorative ornament she created to depict the big game in Tampa.

In less than a year, the owner of Something Special in South Tampa went from a basic design, to NFL approval, to manufacturing and sale of the $45 keepsake. She gained immediate acclaim from trade publications and was written up in a feature story in the Florida Times-Union newspaper in Jacksonville.

"I felt like Cinderella going to the ball," Murnaghan said. "It was just a big, hairy deal."

Murnaghan was part of an NFL program designed to help businesses owned by women and minorities get their share of the contracts when the big game comes to town. more
